The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I’ll keep my promise to veto any bill making Wisconsin less safe, less inclusive, and less welcoming for LGBTQ people and kids—including this one. And I’ll be damn proud to do it.” WI Gov. Tony Evers
And if your real daughter sustains injuries from a mentally ill male, tough fucking titties.

Quote II

“By removing me from the court, my share of the decision that would support patents or other areas of intellectual property, trade secrets or copyright or trademarks, whatever comes before us, is eliminated,” The nation’s oldest federal judge, Pauline Newman

Quote III

“My decision comes as other music services, Apple, Amazon, Qobuz, Tidal, all high res, have started serving the same disinformation podcast I had opposed at Spotify. “Because I cannot leave all those services like I did Spotify, because my music would have no streaming outlet to music lovers at all, I have returned.” Neil Young.
Well, I'm happy he is going back to Spotify. Hopefully Nils Lofgren follows Young's lead.

Quote IV

“...like any enterprise, we reserve the right to make decisions about our business partnerships, and after careful consideration, X decided not to enter into a commercial partnership with the show.” Elon Musk
The black hole obtains another black hole.

Some good news for President Trump.

CNN senior legal analyst Elie Honig said Wednesday on CNN’s “Newsroom” that Fulton County, GA Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee dismissing multiple charges in former President Donald Trump’s Georgia election racketeering case is “embarrassing” for Fulton County, GA District Attorney Fani Willis and her team.

Honig said, “I don’t think this ruling changes the type of evidence that the DA’s going to be able to introduce, but it does knock out some of the charges and look, it’s embarrassing for prosecutors. It’s a screwup by prosecutors when you bring a charge and then a judge throws it out before it even goes to trial.

It looks like Jason Beck, Associate Director, Total Force Requirements and Sourcing Policy office of the Secretary of Defense will be a Commandant at a new Stalag camp for Morons.

Clown World Pentagon
James O’Keefe went undercover and spoke with Jason Beck, Associate Director, Total Force Requirements and Sourcing Policy office of the Secretary of Defense. Beck told O’Keefe that the only ones who should have guns are government employees. He wants the Supreme Court packed so they can’t stop legislation he wants to see as a policy maker, such as abolishing the Second Amendment, abolishing the Senate, and instituting universal health care.

He wants to use a politicized judicial system to take all of our freedoms away

HSHS and Prevea Health, a physician network that offers primary and specialty care, said they’ve begun a thorough and organized process to safely wind down services and shift patient care to other providers.

But Chippewa Falls resident Rick Flynn said he’s concerned that the remaining hospitals in Eau Claire are going to be overwhelmed trying to absorb all of the Chippewa Valley’s emergency services and day-to-day medical needs.

You can now go to the United States Military Academy West Point and let your freak flag fly.

West Point Changes Mission Statement, Removing Values 'Duty, Honor, Country'

In a move sure to worry many that the venerable two-century-old West Point is going woke, Superintendent Lt. Gen. Steve Gilland announced Monday a change in the institution’s mission statement.

The phrase “duty, honor, country” is out — exchanged for the more amorphous “Army values.”

The United States Military Academy’s previous mission statement was: “To educate, train and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the nation as an officer in the United States Army.”

Are you purchasing a commercially made smoker? No says tonight's Genius Award Winner.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - The Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office said Thatcher Skolout was critically injured in a explosion Monday.

It happened at 5:15 p.m. about three to four miles south of McCook on Highway 83 near a home.

Sheriff Kevin Darling said neighbors in the area reported the explosion, but couldn’t determine the exact source. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a propane tank exploded. Skolout was in the process of converting the tank into a smoker. Law enforcement said it appeared he took the precautions to use water inside the tank to displace the vapor but was apparently insufficient to displace all vapors. While attempting to cut the tank with a cutter torch, the vapors were ignited causing the explosion. He was wearing a respirator at the time and had taken other precautions as well.

18 Scott Adams @ScottAdamsSays
If you think TikTok should be allowed in the US because of "free speech," you are engaged in what I call "word-thinking" instead of the real kind of thinking.

Word-thinking is when you try to snap-to-grid to an existing definition (such as "free speech") instead of thinking about a question more usefully.

A more useful way to think about TikTok is to realize it is about free speech, yes, but it is also a weapon. If your analysis ends at saying TikTok is only one or the other -- free speech or a weapon -- you have not considered the whole.

If you see TikTok as both a free speech issue and also a tool China can (and probably does) use to decay the fabric of American society, the decision on how to act becomes trivially easy.

Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at March 13, 2024 10:08 PM (2yu8s)

19 Scott Adams @ScottAdamsSays [cont.]
Word-thinking: Keep TikTok because it is "free speech"

Useful thinking: Ban TikTok because it is a dangerous brainwashing tool and an existential threat to America that also has a free speech element.

We don't tolerate Nazi protests and speech in America because of free speech. That's just the fairy tale we tell ourselves to feel good. We allow it because it is too small to be a threat.

TikTok is NOT too small to be a threat. It is becoming the operating system of young people's brains. And China controls the user interface.

40 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. After yesterday's cross-border raids, which resulted in having the troops and machinery involved wiped out, the Ukrainians decided to double down with some long range drone strikes into Russia. Most of the drones were shot down, the ones that got through did a limited amount of damage, and I'm sure the Russians weren't annoyed at all by these strikes on the sacred soil of the holy motherland.
2. One of the drone strikes was aimed towards a nuclear power plant. Uncool, man. Uncool.
3. Otherwise, the Ukrainians seem to have stabilized the front lines for the time being, by shoving men and equipment, that they can't afford to lose, into the grinder.

It's interesting how this ties to the Ben Shapiro rap stuff.

No one was paying for his music because hardly anyone buys music any more. He's relying on income entirely as filler music in between stuff people want to hear.

I basically agree with this. We don't have to allow foreign owned businesses to operate in our country for any reason. That there is a speech component is irrelevant. The fact that it's a foreign owned company that is effectively controlled by the CCP is more than enough reason to ban it.

The current compromise at least allows Americans to invest in, control and benefit from it.

178 128...I basically agree with this. We don't have to allow foreign owned businesses to operate in our country for any reason. That there is a speech component is irrelevant. The fact that it's a foreign owned company that is effectively controlled by the CCP is more than enough reason to ban it.

The current compromise at least allows Americans to invest in, control and benefit from it.

then: parts of the US: The U.S. at the start of March gave government agencies 30 days to delete TikTok from federal devices and systems over data security concerns. The ban applies only to government devices, though some U.S. lawmakers are advocating an outright ban. China lashed out at the U.S. for banning TikTok, describing the ban as an abuse of state power and suppressing firms from other countries. More than half of the 50 U.S. states also have banned the app from official devices, as have Congress and the U.S. armed forces.

Nex collapsed in the family's living room. Sue called 911, saying that Nex's eyes had rolled back and they were struggling to breathe.[30] Nex had stopped breathing by the time emergency medical technicians arrived, and was declared dead at the hospital that evening.[7]

On March 13, a medical examiner's summary report was released, citing suicide as Benedict's cause of death, and including a finding of a "combined toxicity" of diphenhydramine and fluoxetine.[4][31] A full autopsy report is expected to be released on March 27, 2024.[5]

Could be, there was a case before the Oregon Supreme court over whether the business name 88 Cent Store could be trademarked or not, it was noted in the brief that the name was actually descriptive and that mere terms out of the English language cannot be trademarked, though this decision appears to have been reversed.
Anyhow, the business has been closed so long there are no traces of "88 cent store" in the Oregon Secretary of State online records, that I can find. They were all franchised, though, so there may have been other names used.

I learned a little bit of the intense speech therapy they're doing with my mother today.

Imagine a drill instructor making you say the names of objects around you and in pictures. And doing that over and over again.

Also, the send her on "treasure hunts". Ok, find the "name of object". That object will be hidden somewhere in the room. She has to find it. IOW, say the name of thing verbally. She has to then understand that, then find the physical object.

When we got to her room this afternoon, she was sitting in her chair eating supper on her own. Using her right hand. It's still not 100%, but this is amazing.

Thank Gaia, no, but I still laughed. How many up and coming, or even already there, artistes have musical talent? It seems as if all concerts are Broadway shows now, with prices to match. Some of the famous bands I saw just stood there, didn't prance around the stage, people like Jerry Garcia, Robin Trower, Focus and some others. Musicians who knew their way around any instrument, not autotune.

315 For worst song, I nominate the album side 'In-A-Godda-Da-Vida' (or however the hell you spell it). There are album side songs that annoy me, and quite a few I love, especially from Yes, but there is no album side song that I hate more than that psychedelic dreck.

Yep. Everybody remembers the great opening riff which so ultimately disappoints thanks to an ending everybody somehow forgets due to some mass psychosis voodoo. I hated all the songs I've mentioned when they came out, not just later. I took flak for daring to criticize Eric the Great. So many people didn't like 'Angie' I guess it only became popular because of the band. Holy Gaia, I hope that's the reason. Anyway, 'Hey, Jude' has the same problem as 'Layla', just without the cool opening riff. For me, popular only because of the band, not the song itself.

Because all became popular and heard far too often for civilized ears, I hate them.

364 Lunch counters at Woolworth's and Ben Franklin reminds me of a delicacy greatly enjoyed by the people of Northeast Mississippi up to this very day: the slug burger.

It is a DELIGHT! You'll never quite look at any other burgers the same way again, and that's meant in a good way. Some of you may have heard of them, but if not, google Corinth MS Slug Burger Festival. By way of dispelling fears, rest assured that the "slug" in question does not belong to the land molluscs, cousins of the snail and they play zero part in the cooking or comsumption of Slug Burger enjoyers.

374 Farmer - absolutely no slugs, whether of the ammunition or animal world. There's a dispute over where the term came from, but the one I always heard from the oldest locals swore that the patty was built up around a slug of beef, a round cut of hamburger meat that resembled the careflly milled metal slug that folks would use to get a soft drink can out of a machine, because the slug was the same diameter as the receptacles into which legitimate coins were dropped.

As for the burger itself, it actually debuted in the 1904 World's Fair, and members of NE Mississippi's Weeks family managed to work out the recipe and were able to use it to create a unique local dish that remains celebrated every day,

379 Or, if you're an au natural guy or gal, there's always the appealing Southern delicacy of the Honeysuckle. If you spot one in bloom down here, you can pinch off one of its blossoms and gently suck it - that will bring out a sweet nectar whose taste instantly reveals how Honeysuckle got its name. Looking for a snack? Locate one of our numerous Sweet Gum Trees and chop an axe into its trunk. Not like you're trying to cut the poor thing down, just gentle, firm chops. Two or three would be the most needed, Later that evening you can return (sometimes it takes another day for the process), and there's a sweet-smelling aromatic substance that's collected. It's instant chewing gum!

Old Santa Anna liked it so much that he dragged boxes of it with him to New York and everywhere else he lived during his time in exile from Mexican politics. Bonus! You can break a twig off the Sweet Gum tree and scrape the pith until it resembles a slight cosmetics brush - you've just made your self a sweetgum toothbrush. Mixed with baking soda and water, you can make sure that smile of yours looks as good as you want it.

I was going from my frame of reference growing up in the hill country of the rural South, back when "rural" meant something, as opposed to today's "We're outside the suburbs and there's some greenery" take on rural. Honeysuckle was abundant everywhere, just like figs, crab apple trees, persimmons, and muscadines, and numerous others. But for snapdragon or columbine, you'd have to make a pilgrimage to the great metropolis that was Tupelo, or to the confusing high-rise wonder that was Memphis. And that didn't happen very often.

I live 'north' now. Honeysuckle doesn't grow happily here, nor persimmon...

We 'make do' LOL

Rural? In the true sense of the word-- yes. Cows & horses, gravel roads, wild blackberries by the roadsides.

389 Irongrampa - the Honeydew melon is a work of art. I wish I'd had the opportunity to taste it earlier on in life; as it was, I didn't encounter any until my freshman year at college. NE Mississippi is the hill country of the state, serving effectively as the foothills of the Appalachians, and a lot of their culture and ways of thinking influenced the world I grew up in - a culture that was rather different from that of our Southern neighbors not so situated.

390 Morning, early risers and late toilers! Howzit today?

For some reason this week I've managed six hours' generally uninterrupted sleep each night, which is a good hour more than just a week or two ago. Dunno why, but I shan't question it.

391 387 Aaaaarrrrggghh! Still working on tax papers. Jeez, what a mess.

I think our medical expenses exceed our income for 2023, or close to it. I've been hitting my savings to make up the shortages...

This sucks.

392 JQ - where you live fits my definition of "rural." My only quibble would be gravel roads - where I grew up we had dirt roads. The county supervisors would sometimes make an effort to cast some gravel around, but never to any great effect. Couple that with one lane bridges that required both vehicles to stop and work out who's going to cross first.

Dad used DG (decomposed granite). When it would rain, still had issues though.

396 LOL, Jim in Kali! Hahaha, triple indeed...

I have an appt w/tax prep tomorrow evening. Fine, I'll have it all sorted by then. (Yes, I'm a procrastinator, so need that kick in the ass to git 'r done)

Dad's estate is still open as well... not so difficult, as there's only a bit of income. Loose ends to tie up. And gotta get his house emptied & sold. Ugh.

Posted by: JQ at March 14, 2024 03:43 AM (njWTi)

397 Jim, decomposed granite sounds like a brilliant idea. Our politicos never got around to trying that. As a kid, it did have the benefit that almost any snow or ice storm would render the roads impassable, and so there were a host of Snow Days. And yes, it does snow down in the 'Sip, especially in the more elevated regions that are part of the Appalachian System.

399 Love the guy with the sign about getting Biden's dad a condom. If I really saw such a sign, I'd give the guy money for creativity (and honesty).

In Venice, CA, in 2014, I saw a aging hippie on a street corner with a sign, "SPACESHIP BROKEN, PLEASE HELP." If he'd been on my side of the street, and if I could have pulled over safely (man, what traffic!), I'd have given him some dough.

Dollar Tree has already become Dollar Twenty-Five Tree, and they sell a few $3, $4, and $5 items like Red Baron pizzas. It's no longer true that everything is the same price. Even so, it's my go-to for paper towels and toilet tissue, cleaning products, certain toothpastes and drug things like aspirin, etc. I'd hate if some of the stores in my area shuttered.

400 Most of the gravel has been provided by residents around here. County won't spend any $...

Beats slopping around in mud!

Residents also plow the snow, while county wanks sloughs off in the winter.

401 It snows, but the summer gets its revenge. I still think Dante's real inspiration for the vision of Hell that he presents in the Divine Comedy was from spending the three months of July, August, and September in Mississippi.

Hello, JQ,

Well, it is with the help of melatonin, magnesium, chamomile, and valerian root. The big assist, I think, is that "hydraulic pressure," as one of our commenters puts it, is no longer quite as much of an issue. And if I don't stir, get up and come back to bed, big black Stirling does not try to keep me awake, either. I like him to sleep with me; I don't want him leaping on me, poking with a paw at my face, etc.

403 My sis-in-law works at a Family Dollar store. They haven't released a list of closures yet, so don't know if she'll still have a job by summer.

Thanks to the USAF, I spent the summers of '88 and '90 in Biloxi, MS. It's a bit warm there. Kind of like living inside a humidifier, inside an oven. Had fun though. I dealt with the heat and humid ok. I was younger and more fit, even for a damn yankee!

409 When I bought the place it was a dust road. Didn't know it because the weather was still cool and damp. Come summer it was dust city.
About two years later they paved the road than goodness.

Not as dusty as before, though. I'll take it!

This is a universal problem, IMO.

Can't get relevant results from most search engines anymore. Pfft.

418 Yeah, I don't want any crawlers to give them any credit. I do business there because he's got the business but I have no respect for him other than he did put that selling part together. He's basically an anti-American slut. I resent doing business there but he's got the venue and no competition.

Big South American river is good it's just that I'm too lazy to type that many letters.

What a useless term. It means nothing except what those in charge decides it means.
