The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Today, I am announcing that I will depart Congress at the end of next week. I look forward to staying involved in our political process, as well as spending more time in Colorado with my family.” Rep. Ken Buck (RINO-CO

Quote II

"And I’m so proud of all the women in the outdoors now who are making that more cool or popular. So proud of us, I think we’re doing great." Hannah Barron

Quote III

“Congressman, I have no such aspirations, I can assure you. And I can tell you that partisan politics had no such part what-so-ever in my work. It had no place in the investigative steps that I took. It had no place in the decision that I made. And it had no place in a single word of my report,” Special counsel Robert Hur

Quote IV

"A lot of times, a jury will nullify the law while thinking they followed it.... At the end of the day, the jury has to decide: Is this guy a criminal, or is he a good neighbor? I could see the jury saying, 'This guy is a good neighbor.' Clay Conrad, a partner at Looney, Smith & Conrad

Cops: Man Beat Victim After Trans Discovery
Defendant thought his wrestling opponent "was a girl," police say

MARCH 11--A violent assault this morning occurred after an Iowa man--thinking that he was horsing around with a girl--learned that the individual was “a transgender person,” according to cops who say the victim was left covered in blood and required hospital treatment.

Investigators say that after Justin Farrior Lewis, 35, spent time last night at an American Legion hall in an Iowa City suburb, he invited people he met there to his home.

Based on Facebook postings, Lewis (seen above) appears to be a U.S. Army veteran.

While inside the residence, Lewis “engaged in a physical wrestling match” with an opponent “the defendant thought...was a girl,” according to criminal complaints which detail the 2:30 AM incident.

48 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. The Ukrainians conducted some raids across the border in the northeast, presumably for propaganda purposes and to pull Russian forces away from the current front lines. It did not go well for them.
2. In response to Macron's threats of sending troops into Ukraine, the French Army leaked reports which say the Ukrainians have already lost, and there isn't anything that can be done about it.
3. The Ukrainians continue to telegraph that they will try an amphibious assault at the mouth of the Dneiper River, perhaps in hopes that NATO will come to their rescue by occupying Odessa. See #2 above.

81 73 The LifeVac vid that convinced me to buy it was of a child who got a rubber-tipped dart in his throat, pointing end down, rubber end up. A perfect, round seal between throat wall and rubber and nothing to grab. No other rescue technique would have worked in time. Another item that Heimlich is mostly ineffective with is swallowing balloons. Lifevac can suck them out. BTW, one of the most common items for choking children is pancakes. Kids tend to eat big chunks and the syrup is like glue. Don't tell CBD!

It's hysterical to think, as someone pointed out, that the GOP has put themselves into a position whereby if every member is not on the floor or present, the Donks could have a majority and have a snap vote, vacate the chair and install Jeffries as SOH, they could also ram through legislation, change rules.

If it all wasn't so scary it would be gut busting funny.

Speaking of accents, per the discussion that came up in a thread yesterday, where I mentioned this cunning linguist who could pinpoint where you were born (or learned to talk) to about 20 miles.

I remembered something from when I was in elementary school in the '70s. There a kid, friend of mine and the gang there, and this was a bout 4th or 5th grade. The kids parents were Brits, but he was born here in the Greenville area.

He talked just like we did. Except when he talked to his parents. He would then switch to a perfect, proper British accent of his parents. There is a word for this, "bidialeticalism".

We have a heavily fascist/corporatist economy run by a relative handful of oligarchs who stomp on actual free market dynamics at every turn, and work hand in glove with government to pick winners and losers, as pull the ladder up with them in once they've ascended so the plebs can't get anywhere. Go here and plug in your exact coordinates:
https://tinyurl.com/4z87j8

That will (attempt) to generate exact timings for your coordinates.

I'd be interested to see how accurate this it. Eclipse timings are very tricky, and that's because of the "stochastic" wig-woggling of the Erf's rotational axis, and the Chandler wobble.

Just a wee bit of error there can make for large differences in exact timings for a given location. The main thing is "delta-t", the difference between ephemeris time, and UT1 (mean solar time), but the directional changes of the Erf's axis and Chandler wobble affect it as well.

They tried to green up downtown but it’s still a dump because of these ‘do gooders’ who aren’t doing anybody any good.

I was walking downtown Houston today There aren't nearly as many homeless as pre-Covid. Don't know where they went exactly, but central downtown has half or less of what it once did. The ones I did see were not malnourished exactly. Feeding them is a mistake. Making it easier to be a derelict is a mistake. The couple I passed who were camped out next to the Catholic cathedral had two really nice looking dogs. They were well fed too. Summer is going to be hard on them. You can see the elements already are hard on them. But it is pretty obvious drugs are the big factor.

Timings were off by tens of seconds, and most of that was due to the difference in location. I'd love to see just how accurate this could be for an exact location.

First day we got there, my mother and I ate at some joint there. We were talking. When we talked, I noticed a silence would descend over the whole damned place. We were being stared at.

The waitress kept coming over and asking if we needed anything. She finally said, "I just love to hear you talk!"

See "Nightfall" by Asimov. It was a short story about a society on a planet in a multi-star system that never saw night.

Except one about every 2000 years, when cycles would conspire that there was only one sun in the sky over one hemisphere, and then a total eclipse of the star by their moon.

Society broke down experiencing night for the first time.

Part of the plot was there were some scientists that figured it out. There was going to be darkness, and the historical record showed signs that civilization would rise and then collapse in this 2000 year cycle.

So, they prepared for it, and set up something with artificial light to preserver islands of sanity (on a planet without night, there was no need for much artificial light).

Night came. But then they saw starts, millions and billions of stars. The scientists were not prepared for that. Their theories had their universe being very small. The stars pulled their rug out from under them, and the scientists went even more bat-shit crazy than everyone else.

The difference between Stalin and Hitler is so negligible as to be nonexistent. A few turn of the 20th Century muckrakers were socialists, including Upton Sinclair and his exposé on the meat-packing industry.

Capitalism was being abused back then, with corporate trusts ruling the economic roost, not unlike the America of the early 21st Century. Socialists had good fodder for anti-capitalist books at that time. Today, we see the love of socialism in our youth, idiots though they are, thanks to capitalism today being corrupted and rigged by our elites.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Look up the "Lyapunov time" of the solar system. This is related to the long term stability of the solar system.

The solar system is chaotic. At some point, no matter how well you know the initial conditions, the evolution will become unpredictable (total loss of significance for any finite calculation).

The Lyapunov time is a measure of this. After that time, things become increasingly unpredictable. Best estimate of that for the solar system is about 5 million years (but could be in the hundreds of millions of years).

Anyway, for these reasons, I'm a bit skeptical about claims of cycles and resonances on millions of years time scales.

It might be true, don't get me wrong, but at this time, such is just guess work and maybe pattern recognition. Past behavior is no guarantee of future results past Lyapunov times.

Again, chaos, stochasticity, Lyapunov and all that. In that list you'll see a probability that the resonance is real, and not just a random artifact.

A magnetic pole reversal will go something like this. The Erf dynamo has a strong dipole moment, the dominant component of the Erf's magnetic field.

During a pole reversal, that dipole moment goes to zero, the but magnetic field does not. Dominant term will be quadrupole, and it will be crazy. There will be two "north poles" and two "south poles" slipping and sliding over the planet. Then, it will recover, the dipole moment will come back, but with the opposite polarity.

COmpasses will point south, not north.

Modelling of the "dynamo" that generates a planet's magnetic field is a complex mess. But I remember some model they came up with was able to reproduce this pole shifting behavior pretty well with the historical record.

The duration of the pole shift transition is "about 1000 years" or maybe a bit longer. IOW, there will be a 1000 year period of the crazy quadrupole magnetic field.

The low bar estimate for that duration is about 100 years.

I remember seeing a good simulation of the pole flip. All I could find now is this:
https://tinyurl.com/27wfmygy

That is sort of a mess. It's about 40,000 yr time span. Wait till close to the end, and stop and start single framing advancing. You'll see the quadrupole phase. You'll see two north and south poles coming of the planet there, briefly.

The great seafloor tape recorder does not seem to record any periods of null or "confused" magnetic orientation. Leastwise, not on a scale we can see. If there were any thousand-year periods of confused magnetics, we should find at least some one to two meter bands of lava rock with erratic paleomag.

475 >> Where do they point then?

Along the direction of the local field. You will have two norths and two souths during the transition. But they will be moving all around.

So, during that transition, a local compass will point God knows where, but it will point somewhere, and move around with time.

The term "moments" and all that is a bit of physics jargon. Look it up, if interested. There are lot of "moments". Like moments of inertia. YOu can do an "expansion" of a general field in terms of the "multipole moments", which are powers of two, monopole, dipole, quadrupole, octopole, 16-pole, 32-pole, etc.

For your basic quadrupole field, take four bar magnets, and arrange them in a 90 degree cross configuration. Two north poles at top and bottom, and two south poles to the left and right.

That's taking four dipoles to cancel just right right and make a pure quadrupole. You can take four monopoles, as you can with electric charges and make a much simple pure quadrupole.

Four charges in square configuration, alternating + and - at each vertice.

You know, this pending pole reversal would be a fine opportunity for "citizen science". Design a simple little 3-axis magnetometer, using fluxgates, or maybe proton precession. Whatever works for cellphones and the windshield compasses in cars. Set it on a shelf, and plug it into your computer's USB port, and install logging software made to flange up to the magnetometer. Set it to record a reading on 3 axes once a minute as long as the computer runs. If any axis shows a large delta between readings, switch to once per second until it stabilizes again. Periodically upload the logs to a central database.

With millions of these rigs located all over the industrialized world, you could obtain some really fine granular data as the reversal progresses ( or doesn't).

And this was effective for Hitler to get to power. He managed to get support from private business owners that feared even the SPD getting into power because he would at least permit private ownership to continue. Stalin would just shoot you.

Hence this thing about their being little difference between Hitler and Stalin is nonsense. BUT they do occupy the two sides of the coin of EVIL.
