Still.

Meanwhile my Synology NAS, over the last 8 years, has only woken me up once in the middle of the night when I lost two 8 year old hard drives remarkably on the same day. Security issues: Zero.

In other news I am replacing all the hard drives as I can afford to do so. 8 year old hard drives? What the hell was I thinking? Such is the consequences of a supremely reliable platform.

In fact, something I didn't know is that it's already sold in Japan by NEC as the Lavie Tab 9.

Anyway: I'll buy two. There is literally no competition right now.

But it lacks the 4 essential keys. What a sell out.

14 But right now a high-end China-only card gets stomped by even the cheapest previous-generation card from AMD.

Reminds me of the Hogan's Heroes ep where they're trying to help a downed Russian pilot and Hogan says he'll have his men fix the Russian's plane:

Igor: You are going to fix? What they know about my plane? Is newest, most adwanced Russian model.

Hogan: Yeah, I know, Iggy. It's the same model we had two years ago.

Thank you, Pixy! The notion of buying a Google phone in order to de-Google it strikes me as rather ironic in a not-good way. I like the Qwerty keyboard on the Titan, and the fact that it has really good battery life. And I like being on the blunt edge of the technology curve; at least it works.

18 That Unihertz looks interesting, I kind of like it.

But I've run Tracfone for 20+ years now, and have never paid more than USD$80 for a phone...
I've given up worrying about spyware for a number of reasons, not least international travel, foreign contacts, and various stunts that have without doubt put me on any number of 'lists', so there really isn't any way for me to hide, personally.

Google is Evil, no doubt about it, but on a phone that doesn't contain my whole life like some people, the Samsung Tracfones do Maps and basic geographic searches, and are quite reliable, which is all I need a mobile phone to do. Too bad, that little Unihertz looks kind of handy.

It fits in a shirt pocket. I have all the google apps turned off, but the phone constantly bleats reminders "install Google Play so your apps will work". Fuck off, google, I don't need your apps. I want to be able to do outgoing and incoming phone calls, keep a call log and a contacts list, and be able to send and receive texts. Pics and video are a very low priority. No e-mail on my phone, nope. Basic browser to surf web when wifi is available. I have used the calculator and the flashlight.

25 My latest Samsung Tracfone comes preloaded with Facebook, from which I am banned (never bothered trying to unban myself), which is 'disabled'. Due to other people I run an Instagram, which is Meta but I only use it as a private message app. With the outage the other day, though, when I restarted the phone Meta detected the restart as an attempted sign-in on Facebook and blocked me from Instagram.
I said, "Oh well, Fuck you forever, Meta," and left it.
But then today I restarted the phone again, and Instagram is back up and running as if nothing ever happened.
I'd delete everything Meta but for other people who just cannot get it through their empty heads Meta is Fucking Evil and can't stop using Facebook.

It's a complex calculation involving factors like 2x daily scoopings, complete replacement of all litter plus box cleaning 12-14x a year, and replenishment of the materiel approximately 27x a year, compounded by the requirements of 2 cats @ 24 months of age . . .

Now I'm tired. Need more coffee.

I have a Pixel 8 Pro (I know, I know, WTH was I thinking) I can't imagine trying to degoogle a phone. 32 One contact I have to stay in contact with has a Microsoft office suite for his work, and WhatsApp (Meta) and when I've pointed out the obvious fact both Microsoft and Meta are Evil Personified he defends them.
I've had people I had respect for reflexively defend Google!
I'm simply blown away at how even people who seem to have some level of sense otherwise, will defend obviously malevolent tech companies that they use in their daily lives.
The dependency is deeply disturbing.
When I caught both Yahoo and Google red-handed censoring my email, I had the majority of people I mentioned it to, flatly deny even the possibility. It was 'an accident, a glitch, it wasn't deliberate' and flat-out refused to believe my email was being monitored and censored.

35 but the phone warns me 'if you delete this thing, other things might not work'
is this true
Posted by: Don Black'

Short answer, 'No'.
Long answer, 'For some things'.

In my experience deleting Samsung apps can lead to other Samsung apps not working right or not working at all; I suspect because it's a Samsung phone, so the apps are linked together. If you disable location settings, some features on say, Google Maps, won't work. If you delete Google Maps you probably won't get searchable maps when you do an internet search for, say, a restaurant.
It depends on what you're deleting. Take a moment and think as to whether one app might depend on information input from another app, and it's pretty straightforward as to what you can safely permanently delete.

Posted by: LenNeal at March 12, 2024 04:52 AM (9yXr+)

36 Also in my experience Samsung apps are interlinked and really intrusive between apps. I've told this tale before, but this was proven when I stayed at a flat, had to reboot the wifi, and when I got internet back and restarted my phone discovered the Samsung 'Smart Refrigerator' in the kitchen had automatically downloaded its control app onto my Samsung phone.

45 My mobile tech needs are not at all complicated anymore, now that I am "retired" or as I like to call it on "extended unemployment." I want to get phone calls, voice messages, text messages, emails, watch TV, listen to music, web surf, do some financial crap, and Google Maps. That is about 100%. I know this is not being de-googled but why do I care? I am probably going to be dead 10 years - let The Google monetize that. Meanwhile when I am traveling I can, from my phone, book a hotel room and then find a bar. What else do you want in life I ask? Your mileage will vary here but for me I have spent years honing how I model my digital life. I perfectly understand that issues here, the risks, and the benefits and I am good with my choices. That is how I roll.

60 Biden, 81, floated some of his budget proposals during Thursday night’s State of the Union address, including raising the income tax rate for corporations to 28% and bringing the minimum corporate tax rate from 15% up to 21%.

He also called for more than $400 monthly in mortgage rate tax credits and a 25% tax on billionaires — defined as those with a net worth of $100 million or greater.

If this happens the number will be at 5 million within 10 years.

80 70 It is unacceptable that matters can't be resolved on line on the first try. Every year in Arkansas, you have to assess personal property. This amounts to declaring what you have that is taxable, usually the same as the previous year. I did my yearly assessment on the car Saturday and had a confirmation e mail from the county treasurer yesterday. I can now wait until the first of June, take a couple minutes, no more, and renew my tags, July expiration. I get the stickers within a week. The feds, on the other hand are terrible, although the VA has improved considerably.

In it, he told Cheney and her investigators that he overheard White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows push Washington D.C. He also testified President Trump had suggested 10,000 would be needed to keep the peace at the public rallies and protests scheduled for January 6, 2021. Ornato also described White House frustration with Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller’s slow deployment of assistance on the afternoon of January 6, 2021.

GEN. RYDER: Well, it's a combat zone, right? And you've got active combat operations going on with Hamas near. I mean, to your point, we've seen reports in the past about Hamas taking aid as well as criminal elements that are attempting to hoard. But this mission is about getting aid to Gaza, and then working with others for the delivery and distribution.

Q: Does the DoD anticipate that Hamas will try to fire on them, on the operation (inaudible)?

GEN. RYDER: Look, I mean, that's certainly a risk, again, but if Hamas truly does care about the Palestinian people, then again, one would hope that this international mission to deliver aid to people who need it would be able to happen unhindered.

Or Mr Smith

The value of [a country’s] annual produce is certainly more or less diminished when it is thus turned away from producing commodities evidently of more value than the commodity which it is directed to produce [by trade policies].
The industry of the country, therefore, is thus turned away from a more to a less advantageous employment, and the exchangeable value of its annual produce, instead of being increased, according to the intention of the lawgiver, must necessarily be diminished by every such regulation.

I suspect Trump is in a weird place with that, but I know for a fact that the release of it was purposely delayed until he was out of office so that he wouldn't receive credit for it and Biden would. And remember, it saved 18 trillion people, so delaying it had to have killed a bunch of people, on purpose, for political reasons and under the guidance of the (D)s / government.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to discover this is a rope-a-dope for that discussion.
