The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Members have a right to political beliefs but you don’t have a right to make a job-related ceremony political in nature. We want the members to come forward. They will come to headquarters to be educated why their behavior is unacceptable.” FDNY Chief of Department John Hodges

Good luck reeducating people who despise your guts, Chief.

Quote II

“Each one hopes that if he feeds the crocodile enough, the crocodile will eat him last.” Sir Winston Churchill

Quote III

“If you’re reading the tea leaves and looking at what may happen with our politics in the next year or so, things are pretty good right now – the markets are up,” Finance firm consultant Alan Johnson

Do you hear me bitch about The Fabulous not making me a sammich? No, I don't think so. So why do people go online to discuss their spouse/significant other's faults?

The Top 10 cities I won't live inThe Top 10 most expensive cities to live in.

Each year, the Economist Intelligence Unit, an offshoot of news magazine The Economist, releases a ranking of the most expensive cities in the world. Researchers dive into the everyday expenses associated with living in each place — groceries, household supplies, personal care, alcohol, tobacco, clothing, domestic help, recreation, transportation, and utilities — to look beyond the basics of international economies. Notably, they leave housing off the list.

With most of these cities, you’re paying a premium for cultural prestige, but it’s not the only factor at work. These cities are centers of high-paying industries or major players on the international stage, and sometimes even have unique problems with international trade that affect everyday expenses. Here are the 10 cities The Economist ranks as the most expensive in the world as of 2023.

And it won't be long before Pittsburgh will be on that list. Pittsburgh? Well when the police are off a good chunk of the post midnight hour, criminals will run and that is an economic disaster waiting to happen. Not to mention injury and loss of life to those folks.

Maybe the changes being made to the Pittsburgh Police Department's rules and hours aren't quite that extreme. But from my vantage point, it looks like city officials saw how organized crime rings had taken shoplifting to entirely new levels in under-policed cities like San Francisco and said, "Hold my donut!"

Under the new rules that went into effect at the end of February and were just given nationwide attention by End Wokeness on Twitter/X, there will be no Pittsburgh police at the city's six police stations between the hours of 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. More ominously, police will no longer respond to calls "that aren't considered in-progress emergencies," according to WPXI-11 News. "That means calls like criminal mischief, theft, harassment, and most burglary alarms will all be handled by an 'enhanced' telephone reporting unit."

When it comes to Aliens (and not the illegal ones) we really are being served by the best.

Interstellar signal linked to aliens was actually just a truck
Reports and Proceedings

Sound waves thought to be from a 2014 meteor fireball north of Papua New Guinea were almost certainly vibrations from a truck rumbling along a nearby road, new Johns Hopkins University–led research shows. The findings raise doubts that materials pulled last year from the ocean are alien materials from that meteor, as was widely reported.

“The signal changed directions over time, exactly matching a road that runs past the seismometer,” said Benjamin Fernando, a planetary seismologist at Johns Hopkins who led the research. “It’s really difficult to take a signal and confirm it is not from something. But what we can do is show that there are lots of signals like this, and show they have all the characteristics we’d expect from a truck and none of the characteristics we'd expect from a meteor.”

Today's good news story comes from Canyon, Texas.

In a heartwarming tale of resilience and determination, 22-year-old Faith Snapp has defied the odds by securing a coveted spot at the Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine despite being legally blind. With less than 10% field vision and only the ability to detect movement in her right eye, Snapp's indomitable spirit and love for animals have propelled her towards her dream of becoming a mixed-animal veterinarian.

36 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. The Russians continue their slow grind forward. Minefields and drones are taking a toll on them. The Ukrainians are fighting fiercely to hang on to the small salient they carved out, at great cost, during last summer's counter-offensive.
2. The Ukrainians gathered a half dozen tanks and associated forces in the northeast, perhaps for a cross-border raid into Russia. They were spotted and dealt with.
3. There is some interesting activity at the mouth of the Dneiper River. It looks like the Ukrainians are setting up for another amphibious attack across the river, hoping to break the blockade of their ports. This will probably not go well for them.

Golden Eagle is a brand of syrup out of a little place north of Tuscaloosa. If you ever see it on a shelf you should buy a jar. And it is just a mason jar with a label. It's 100 years old or so and a combination of honey, molasses, and corn syrup. It's got a unique flavor that is really great on biscuits and such as well as making pies.

IIRC every jar that leaves the plant is tightened by hand just because that's what the family thinks is appropriate. I kind of love that.

The Costco membership has the most weight to me. If they're not on the "$100 off and free installation" or whatever sale call and ask when they will be and try to wait the month or so.

210 I let the grease in the pan get pretty cool, not congealed.

Through a funnel and into an empty, plastic water bottle, it goes. Never melts the bottle, either.

Wipe the pan out with a paper towel, which of course, goes with the grease bottle, into the trash.

The pan can then be cleaned in the sink, with the very minimum of grease or oil being dissolved by the soap.

You might see if you've got an NTB nearby. I saw where they were bought out by Mavis recently and they're matching and beating prices of competitors. IIRC all new tires come with lifetime balance and alignment, but call and be sure about that. That's a big cost savings over the life of the tires.

I've had some Mavis house brand tires on a large SUV before and they were pretty impressive. I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again if I found a good deal on them.

Which makes no sense since runflats are heavier tires. Lose some weight in the trunk but gain weight on all four corners. I guess it nets out to less weight overall but for a 3000 lb car does 20 or 30 lbs make that much of a difference?

274 eparts wants $361.00 for the carb kit of the Kohler. Another place wants $4.61 for a wing nut. I can buy the whole thing with the fuel cut off for ~$30.00 at YouGuessedIt. Haven't found one with adequate reviews yet.

I'm taking Bender's advice and buying a $3.00 manual fuel cut off valve until a satisfactory alternative is found. The cut off solenoids are pretty cheap ~$10.00. My concern is the distance of the throw.

When I get the cut off installed then I will pull the solenoid and try to find a part number. I'd like to find a good cheap carb just for backup. Mine is 23 years old and they don't last forever.

Seems kind of like Pete Rose betting on Reds' baseball games while sitting in the dugout, & managing the team. Also, fwiw, the linked article had a lot of gold bug-y flavor to it, I thought. "Insiders selling stock! Buy gold now!"

It's easy to check the outstanding short interest in any stock. Several online financial newsletters publish a list of the most-shorted companies every business day.

(touches nose, points at Cicero)

It's an excuse for environmental claims. Manufacturers can leave out the spare tire, which adds weight to a vehicle, and then adjust their fleet MPG ratings accordingly.

They couldn't care less about you being stranded without mature technology that has existed for as long as people have used wheels or the additional cost of the run-flats. Matter of fact, they'll often use them as a selling point.

All they're worried about is not getting gigged by the federal government.

Short version, if you violate this law you are subject to a 250K fine on a first offense and a 500K if you happen to have subsequent offense. Worse, for me, is a complete importation ban on property I acquired legally and under the plain terms of the US Constitution.

Effectively, the Leftist controled states, with such laws, have codified into law in a state by state basis the balkanization of the United States (*snort*).

Bottom line: I will never move to Montrose, CO which is my birthright as an American citizen, because the State of Colorado has nullified my rights as a US Citizen.

We cannot continue as a nation under such violations.

Purpose is to offset the "nature hates a vacuum" syndrome, but have a zero-moisture gas IN that space, that won't result in fogged up windows.

Which, will happen, as soon as the seal on those things fail. Which also, is why you don't buy the cheap, Make in Chinee white vinyl windows from the glib, smooth, oily sales lizard.

What a tragic life & death (at 31) -- who'd apparently been described as "THE pre-eminent British folk rock singer."

Perhaps best known for her duet with Robert Plant on "The Battle of Evermore" -- which I would have sworn was Joni Mitchell.

It was helium leaking into the "MEMS" devices (microelectromechanical sensors and oscillators). They were supposed to have a vacuum inside the tiny little things. The seals would keep air out, but couldn't keep helium out.

That changed the resonant frequencies and tuning of varous shit.

The Dems are telegraphing their 2024 playbook. The illegals are going to riot (because they haven't been given enough free shit) and/or the homies in the 'hoods get pissed off enough for some vigilantism/good old gang retaliation or even normies making problems disappear. The blue state National Guards are integral to this plan; if anything, red state national guards are being sent to Texas's border. This isn't Bloody Kansas -- yet. But with just a little political and media massaging, they'll get their 'FBI called into action' black swan event moment, with all the necessary curfews and martial law where required. Martial law is one damn fine reason to suspend the election OR make mail-in voting mandatory. If they can't legally get Trump, and their game plan on that is falling apart thanks to massive corruption, martial law and the suspension of the election is their last gambit to retain power. Besides Trump's assassination.

That klaxon's still blaring really loud.

What dove? There is pink mist, and feathers.

I once caught an ascending dove, flushing from a brush. Range? Maybe 12 yards. 12 ga., No. 8 shot, 2-3/4", low-brass shell.

The shot string hollowed out the bird from everything from the spine, down.

I retrieved an intact back, wings, head and most of the tail. Guts and breast? GONE.

That one, wasn't in the Dove Skillet, that night.

Cromwell was terrible to the Irish, but his speech was one of the classics of history, Neither awful Biden nor his speechwriters could ever come up with this. For one thing, they aren't that intelligent, and it is unlikely they'd mention God. Everybody feels this way about most politicians, I think.

I see factory surplus dust covers can be had for not much $$. One probably could drill a new dust cover and rivet a mounting plate for the red dot to it. but that would obscure the iron sights. The dust cover is not absolutely flat on top, though.

I have been going by Outside of life for a long while now. before that I wore the "Somewhere South of I-80" Moniker.

It is rare that I post this much. Normally I dont do more than 3 post a week.

I do not shitpost on anybody. That I know of.

497 AOP.

Walther also made fully forged and milled slides for the P-38.

Might be worth a search for one such?

And then just list and re-sell the stampie you got in this misbegotten acquisition.

Somewhere South of I-80. At least that's not an "unknown".

Your "unknown" (outside of life), well... I don't keep a registry of 'hashes'. You want us to know you, you post under your known nic.

Or, as such responses go your way, you endure the flames and arrows, as might be your want.

But, you've shed whatever armor you might've had, by posting under your unknown and naked sock.

That's on you. I'll not apologize, thus.

No, no. The new slide is milled, from a forging or billet. It is solid steel. It came bare, with no parts in it. The dust cover is the rib atop the rear half of the slide, which cover the channel in which the firing pin, loaded chamber indicator, and various springs and pins reside. This part was always stamped of spring steel, AFAIK.

Must read more about Cromwell. I only know the unimportant things -- rose from humble origins, became the No 1 man for Henry VIII and then fell from grace, and that's about it, and I've probably gotten half of it wrong. Anyway, must read more about him.

Now would be a good time! Except that I'm falling asleep to the television and Botched is on. My God, they just pulled the old implants out of some woman with mondo breasts and it looked like extracting giant, bulbous parasites. I hope I'm not offending anyone's choices here. But this woman would have looked fine with a fit, natural body.

501 The New Mexico Communist enacted a law the other day that mandated a 7 day waiting period for picking up a firearm purchase because, evidence free, empirical or otherwise, it is proven "this save lives." *Snort*.

All this did is cause me to buy a Mossberg 500A for quail hunting this coming fall and a SW MP 15/22 22LR because it was fuck a you to the NM Communists.

In other news the 15/22 has cost me a small fortune in aftermarket crap because it is so much fun to shoot. Plink, plink, plink, plink....I haven't had this much fun since I was 12 yo with my Remington Black and Chrome Nylon 66 and its 4X fixed scope. The scope this time around is much better. Plink, plink, plink plink.

505 I hope you have gone to restful sleep now, Blonde Mortician. Thomas Cromwell of the 1500's was only distantly related to the Roundhead of the 1600's. There are some good English novels about Oliver Cromwell by Hilary Mantel and there is an excellent biography of Oliver Cromwell by Antonia Fraser.

Big screen TV time plus a nice local IPA with a Bushmills on the side. I would prefer Colkegan, a "Scotch" distilled in Santa Fe, New Mexico but $25.00 vs. $65.00 has its charms.

520 Nina Hagen.
I can't count how many times I've had to listen to people who grew up in Socialist/Communist countries go on about how she's a genius. Punk/New Wave was hugely popular with 'the kids' in East Bloc places, and after the Wall fell they still held on to the nostalgia. The Clash, The Stranglers, Ramones, on and on.
It's my basis for understanding people from Commie countries objecting to it on the basis it wasn't Communist... ENOUGH, confirming Eric Hoffer's theses.
All those people are mad about the evils of Capitalism and rant with nostalgia about the personal little 'protests' they made in their awful, grey countries.
Lot of really. really confused people generated by Communist regimes.

522 I think my exasperating favorite is Yugoslavians (yes, there is a contingent of people who cling to that identity) insisting the free-market surrenders Yugo made to stay even partly afloat represented an advanced form of Socialism.
I'm not making this up: they insist that the introduction of (limited) private property rights, (limited) free enterprise, and (limited) freedom of expression represented the True Victory of an advanced form of Socialism.

Can't make this shit up.

525 For what it is worth I find Beethoven's last four piano sonatas, 29-32, to be some of the finest compositions in all of the 1000+ years of Western Music. Beethoven was near deaf for all of them; the music was totally in his mind. Given that they were written at the end of his life and free of physically hearing them I find them less music and more free sound bouncing around. Of course this is not really true as they are some of his most rigorous and complex compositions. Such is the poetic greatness of the human mind at times.

526 SOme of the grocery stores here experimented with 24/7. That didn't last. Only 24 hr stores around here now are a couple of pharmacies. Which makes sense.
Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley'

My workplace (supermarket) is now the only 24/7 place open in the entire area with the exception of the truck stops out by the highway, 10 miles away. So if anything is out crawling around in the middle of the night, it comes in the store. To my knowledge there are no more 24/7 Walmarts. Rona casualty.
