Old Harry Rocks, UK
by Mads Peter Iversen/madspeteriversen_photography

So your wife, squier. She gets around, doesn't she?

-She's well-traveled.

I'll bet she is, I'll bet she is! Has she ever been to... Old Harry's Rocks, if you grasp my meaning?!

-Matter of fact, she has an aunt there.

An aunt! OOOOOH! Bet she does! Wink-wink nudge nudge, Squier. An aunt! Oooh, aren't you the lucky one?

Visiting hours at the animal hospital.

Kitten boops a full-grown dog, who isn't sure what this means.

Rescuing a sickly, skin-and-bones stray puppy.

I'm not sure this dumpling preparation area is up to code. They probably have the mice under control, though.

Smart dog realizes that discretion is the better part of valor.

To the Cat-Poles!

Horseplay at the beach.

Galloping horses. I think they might be paso finos.

25 Sea otters! They are so sweet.

Did you know they are the keepers of the kelp forest? Without the sea otters, the sea urchins eat all the kelp and the beaches turn in to food deserts for the fish and other wildlife.

The coastline of northern Cali is starting to recover due to the voracious appetites of the otters.

77 I saw / heard two news items of interest in the past hour: (1) we're apparently spending a bunch of money on a multi-national force and humanitarian aid for Haiti (i.e. grift for the Democrats in general and the Clintons specifically); and (2) a Boeing whistleblower who didn't show up for a subsequent day of depositions was found dead of a "self-inflicted" GSW. All I could think of was the old Blackadder line about the person who "accidentally, brutally cut off his own head while combing his hair."

79 A surge in the last century in the sea otter population, however,
killed off the commercial abalone industry along the central and
southern California coast and made it hard for sport divers to find
any abalones, let alone large, 12-inch ones. Many divers,
fishermen and even wildlife biologists worry that the otter is driving the abalone to extinction.

Years ago I worked for a roofing company that had their office in their home. This was in Florida. They had the most annoying Jack Russell ever. He would get under the deck and get stuck. I would call owner and tell her. She told me I had to crawl under the deck and get him out. I told her she could fuck off with that. Where we lived there were alot of snakes and gators. I quit that job, lol.

82 10,000 troops? That's malarkey! You might as well send a Ma Barker football team to the World Cup.

When I ordered the D-Day landings, I sent more than 150,000 of those Pillsbury Doughboys, and January 6th was way worse than June 6th, jack! There were 10,000 casualties on that day alone, and all of 'em were my sainted son Bo. Named him after my best friend's dog, because he was so loyal.

Anyway, the blood of both those days is on your hands, America. Word as a Brandon.

120 The sea otter is chiefly distinguishable from the common species by its hind feet being hairy, and the tail being only one fourth part as long as the body.

A considerable trade in sea-otters' skins is carried on betwixt Russia and other nations. The Kamtschadales barter them with the Cossacks, and they with the Russian merchants. The Chinese are the principal purchasers of them from the Russians; and they pay for them at the rate of from seventy to a hundred rubles each.

I've heard Brit actors do impeccable Southern accents. One such actress I remember was on Jay Leno I think. He asked her to do a Southern accent.

She asked "Which one?" indicating she knew what she was about. She did three or four different ones, and schooled Leno on the differences.

Personally, I think most British humor is shite.

It's not more sophisticated, especially standups. British men are like American women who try to do standup. We think it's funny cuz they're being crude, and it sounds funny when crude things come out of THAT mouth.

214 sock_rat_eez, Pablo D.

Y'all know *way* more than I do about the world of Ham.

Because I know, damn near zero. But, I'm heading in that direction. Oddly prompted, because Herself New Dawn wants to cut Comcast out, as much as possible. But, my I.T. guru told me the OTR antenna (here in Galveston), needs a 20 ft. elevation, in order to see over the horizon to the Sugarland, TX area transmitters.

So, I've built the mast. Near the top, it has three 15", radial arms, spaced 120 degrees apart. One for the OTR TV (aimable) antenna. One for a full function weather station. One, vacant, maybe for a CB Base Station? And the top of the Main Pole, available for a HAM aerial of one kind or another.

I'm aiming for Technician and General, out of the gate.

So, given the frequencies available/forbidden at that level, is there an antenna design or type which might "best fit" those parameters? Omnidirectional, please. And, I'm *not* wanting to log contacts from all around the world. I'm just wanting functional comms, after hurricanes or such.

My email is in my nic. Replying here is fine too, of course. Thanks in advance for y'all's help!

Decatur Alabama shares an accent with French Lick Ohio?
Posted by: G'rump928(c) at March 11, 2024 08:45 PM (aD39U)

It's a fascinating map, but it's clear that the makers knew a whole lot more about northern accents than about Southern. What they have is not wrong; but if you spend some time traveling, you realize that each state has it's own unique accent. (roughly speaking, of course) The Carolina's have a very distinct accent, different than Georgia, which is different from Alabama.
I could go on, but I've made the point.

He could pin-point where you were born, or at least learned to talk to within 20 miles. Well, out East. Out west the granularity gets coarser.

And you couldn't fool him either. Someone would try to fake a different accent, and he'd spot it right away and most of the time get their real accent even through their put-on.

277 He could pin-point where you were born, or at least learned to talk to within 20 miles. Well, out East. Out west the granularity gets coarser.

I've enjoyed messing around with that sort of thing myself since college. I'm nowhere near the "within 20 miles" category, but I can usually place someone fairly close. It's fun and I enjoy it, and I rarely if ever will disclose that I'm trying to figure something out. I just like to know.

278 I was born and raised in southern Michigan, lived several years in California, and have been in Northern Virginia for almost thirty. I wonder if that linguist could tell that from whatever mongrel accent I have now.

279 Also that mapping website is very interesting and it would be neat to get down to the county level. At a quick glance I notice that there is nothing in between Shelby and Asheville, and things change quickly from there into the mountains.

Weren'ts and you'uns and such.

280 Also the subject from Shelby is a college student and daughter of an artist of lawyer. She's got a pretty voice, but she's very refined.

I probably have a mix of Western PA and NoVA, whatever that is.

283 It's funny that people from up north would probably think that Shelby, NC lady

dialectsarchive.com/north-carolina-17

is as Southern as can be and I think she's refined and borderline watered down and has lost a lot of the area. I'm guessing it's the Charlotte influence.

People from all regions think everyone in other regions talk the same. Travel around New England you will hear a multitude of accents.
