Gun Thread: Second March Edition!

031024 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the second Gun Thread of March, and who went to the range this week and practiced their fundamentals?

note: insert super funny joke here about Daylight Savings Time and wacky hijinks are certain to ensue in the comments

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

Range Time!
Who has been to the range? Why the intrepid shooters of the Moron Gun Club! Our pal blaster shares the details.

DMV MGC used these Battle At Sea Splattering Targets in an all Kimber match at a recent range day. We set the targets out at 5 yards. Those are 1 inch grid squares. We took turns firing 5 rounds at a time, trying to knock out all the dots.

031024 blaster 1 scaled.jpg
Hrothgar(red) v sharon(willow's apprentice)(green) with Kimber Aegis Elites (Optic Installed) in .45 and 9mm respectively.

and...

031024 blaster 2 scaled.jpg
blaster(green) v sra blaster(red) with Kimber Raptor IIs in .45 with iron sights.

First takeaway is that Hrothgar is the clear winner - he didn't get all of the dots but got more than any of the rest of us.

Second is that sra blaster was a close second.

Third is this burns up a LOT of ammo - it's hard!

Fourth - this was fun!

Man, I can see fundamentals being practiced all over the place! Thanks blaster, and great shooting from the Moron Gun Club!

Cigar of the Week

031024 rhomboid Epernay scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Illusione Epernay

Illusione is a cigar company started by a guy in Reno, NV, which has carved out a distinctive profile for itself. Among the unusual offerings are cigars with little or no ligero leaf, the tobacco leaf from high on the plant which typically has the most flavor and strength. The Illusione Epernay (in this case, the Le Ferme, 5.2 X 4 is a medium-bodied and very smooth cigar, with excellent construction (easy draw, even burn). A Nicaraguan puro (only Nicaraguan leaf used) made in Honduras, it has an attractive medium brown Corojo 99 rosado wrapper, with corojo and criollo leaves inside. Some reviews of this highly-rated cigar pick up everything from floral to fruit to spice notes, my neanderthal palate on the other hand can only attest to cedar and earth, in a smooth and medium overall experience. Definitely one worth trying for palates of all levels. Available online for $6 and up.

Excellent as always, rhomboid! Thank you and Happy Smoking!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com
Nicks Cigar World

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

12 Hi all.
Would have been here even sooner but Eric Clapton always catches my attention.
That game was fun but difficult. Imagine having to hit the very center of the target every time. Even with a red dot, it was hard as you had to keep moving along the line. I was also convinced that shooting horizontal was easier than shooting vertical lines. Why do you think that is?

37 I did go to the range this week!

Following the advice Ed L gave me during the trip back from TX, I tested a few rounds of defense ammo (which I had never tried before) in the 1911 and P365.

I also started practicing double action with my .38 revolver (S&W model 14). I always bring a revolver so I think this will become part of the routine.

Had a decent outing with the P365. Contrary to all advice, I usually shoot it better when I speed up and stop thinking.

I agree with this. Last outing, I announced that I was just going to pick up and shoot and not only shot well, but cleared a jam on the fly. It is confidence building. It seems so much easier to do this outdoors though which is why the scoot and shoot at the MoMe is so much fun.

54 You Sunk My Battleship! Nice shooting Y'all!

Took my PTR 91 with the newly acquired Franklin Armory Binary III trigger pack out for a test run at 50 and 100 yards on Friday. Passed all the safety tests and checked the zero on semi only, looked fine. Then switched to binary and it worked but is a little strange at first. Pull trigger, bam! Release trigger bam! Rinse and repeat. The usual semi only trigger pack for this rifle was around 2 pounds while the binary trigger is right on at 4-4.5 pounds in all modes which I really like. Gonna run her next week from 100-600 yards for double taps then do rapid fire drills at 100-200 yards and a few mag dumps at 25 yards for shits and grins.

Since my cataract surgery about 5 years ago, I have been using +1.75 for reading and +1.25 for shooting. Now I'm using 1.25 for reading and need to get something else for shooting. What I really need are progressives with safety lenses.

64 I think my range trips are helping with my pistol shooting. I am starting to refine down to "good shots" and "bad shots but I know why." I have some seriously bad habits from time to time.

Focusing on my trigger pull really helps get past a flinching bad habit. I'm trying to just think about the smooth trigger pull and let my subconscious worry about aiming right, and trying for complete indifference to the coming boom. When it works, it works really well. One 15 yd target has 17 shots in a three-inch group, plus three "bad shots but I know why." By my current standards, this is good.

Starting to clear away the flinch bad habit has exposed a much older bad habit I'd completely forgotten about. Decades ago, firing a .22 bolt action rifle with a sling, I somehow became convinced that, as my sights bobbed around slightly, and my finger tightened on the trigger, if I happened to be getting really near the boom point of the pull, and my bobbing is not just where I'd like it to be, I try to yank it in the right direction before the shot happens.

That made for a lot of the bad shots today. So it's my next thing to work on.

76 I really miss cigars. I had to give up smoking years ago, but I genuinely enjoyed good cigars; used to smoke 7 or 8 a day. My preference was for the Hoyo De Monterrey Excaliber (Churchill).

In what I now call the "golden age" of my adult working life (I am retired), I worked for Florida National Bank in Miami for several years during the 1980s. My department was located in the Dupont Building, an art deco skyscraper that had been completed in 1938. My boss and a co-worker had been given offices that had originally belonged, respectively, to the chairman and the CEO. The old boardroom was my office. It had a massive marble table with bronze legs that had been installed in the building before the exterior wall had been put in. I could open the windows and puff away to my heart's content.

SiD, I hope everything worked out OK on your runs w/ defense ammo. For that P365, standard pressure ammo should be enough for your requirements. 9mm +P is probably overkill. The short barrel and light weight will likely make +P an unpleasant load to shoot, with more energy and recoil getting transferred to your hand and wrists. But it should make for a pretty decent imitation of a flash bang grenade for someone at close range on the receiving end.

Did all of your 1911 magazines feed defense ammo properly? GI and cheap magazines aren't always the best choice for defense ammo.

94 Yesterday sra blaster and I went to the range to PRACTICE OUR FUNDAMENTALS so that we will be better at the steel shoot. Competition seems like it would be a way to improve skills.

Having a well defined objective for range practice made it really focused. sra blaster is getting sharper with the P226 and I am really surprised how well the PSA Dagger is working out (I recall MAE saying that it works for him.) Oh, because you have to have rizz in competition I got a flared magwell for it.

BUT - had a bad red dot experience. The one on the Dagger went wonky. I had it aligned with bore laser but under fire it went out of spec - could not be adjusted to alignment. Has suppressor height sights so I was able to use those to great effect. This dot is now in the trash.

Definitely. This is where I have to defer to guys built like the one in the video, who are content to drive around on tires with giant cracks in them. I would never do that, and I would never have thought to mount a GoPro inside a vehicle tire, and then drive with it that way. Tires and wheels need to be symmetrical and balanced, you just can't do that.

But he did. So he has the awesome video and I don't.

I need to restock .45 ACP range ammo and a bit of .38 Special as I cannot shoot my stock of reloads at this range. After that I will pick up a few more defense rounds so that I can practice occasionally (with more rounds in the mag).

113 OK, one thing that range first aid left out. And I think it was left out because it's not usually as immediate a threat as something like a gunshot.

But what was left was burns.
As the ladies can attest, and some of the guys, freshly fired brass is HOT and it can go some really sensitive places. So, I have some burn salve in my range kit.

Also, eye care. I think most ranges (the indoor, bougie kind with water fountains and indoor plumbing) have eye wash stations. But some might not, and I'm betting a lot of outdoor ones don't. And, again, brass can get anywhere. And bits of powder and dust and maybe a tiny sliver of a ricochet. So I now carry eye wash in my kit. You can get a box of 25 small plastic vials from places like Amazon. You can also use the purified, pre-packaged water packets for survival drinking - snip a small hole across a corner and you can squirt that water on a wound or across an eye to wash it.

The Israelis (and US Army) have as their standard doctrine for the tank commanders to fight their tanks with open hatches if at all possible. That's because tanks are big, clumsy beasts that have difficulty seeing where they're going and knowing what's going on outside the tank. Yes, it makes tank commanders more exposed to the hazards of the battlefield. But tank warfare from WWII to the present has proven over and over that seeing the threat is critical to battlefield survival and victory. In 1991, M1's, equipped w/ the best sensor suites ever seen in tanks, still saw tank commanders fighting them w/ open commander's hatches in order to see (and to a lesser extent, hear) what's going on around them.

I mostly agree with this. But it was a Wilson Combat one that suddenly stopped going all the way to the top one day at the range. First 7 rounds shot fine, then I got an empty chamber. I looked, and the 8th round was just not high enough to feed. And there was no push from the magazine spring to do so. It just up and quit.

So, I'm the guy with the 1 in a million Wilson Combat mag that went fzzt. All the rest of y'all can thank me for being that guy.

It's a matter of choice. For some, the standard ammo may be enough for the p365. But there are many loads such as the one I use, Speer 124 Luger +P, specifically designed for the shorter barrel. It produces less felt recoil, has more reliable penetration and expansion. It is about 1150 FPS at the barrel which is more than enough to punch through at average engagement distances. It also feeds very reliably. YMMV

I'm trying to keep my range bag FAK down to a minimum. Things that will allow continued shooting, as opposed to the trauma kit I know the range has on the back wall (or the one I carry in my car if I'm going somewhere not that Gucci).

So, those burn dressings are for little spot burns. I'm putting thin moleskin in there for slide rash. Gauze and tape.

The TRAUMA KIT has a tourniquet, clot-making bandages, big burn gel gauze, etc. It also has, as per that article, the standard emergency "blanket". The car also has a wool blanket (even in the summer) for multiple uses.

And everywhere has a flashlight. Because wounds are seldom in a spot you can just say "Hold that up to the light, would you?"

For me, it was the Versailles Restaurant in Little Havana, and El Tropico, somewhere not far from the airport, I believe. Mrs. Paco and I plan to return for a visit this year or next, mostly to dive once again into that fabulous Cuban cuisine.

I remember seeing that Royal Castle, but I never managed to drop in for a meal. Mrs. Paco became a naturalized citizen at a monster ceremony in the Orange Bowl in 1984 (VP Bush officiated). What a year! Reagan was reelected president and my beloved Detroit Tigers won the Series!

About ten years ago, I had to go visit Quantico for work. I ran into a sergeant in the USMC Weapons Training Battalion, who were receiving new deliveries of Colt M45A1s at that time. I asked him why the USMC selected 7 round magazines (Wilson Combat 47CBs) for the M45A1 when they could have gone w/ 8 round magazines. He told me that the USMC (i.e. the USMC Weapons Training Battalion) considered the 7 round magazine more reliable than the 8 round magazine. I don't remember why, though.

153 This is semi-gun related:
My quiet and quaint little burg in northern NH had a home invasion last week. Two black cars with darkened windows and NY plates. Hit a wealthy restaurant owner’s home during the day when she was working. Tore up the inside including the chimney.
The police think they had scoped out the area beforehand, and may have had inside info.
It may be a cartel gang that is bringing “newcomers” in from Canada.
Gun related? I came home and dredged the pond to make sure the ARs were prepared, and instructed the female inhabitants on perimeter security.

159 Don't recall the model, but a few years back dashed to the local 5.11 store when they had a sale, and the belt I bought is my standard one for shootin' activities now. So I think their gun belts are good.

Handles holsters and pouches well. And since 5.11 pants have long been my standard for shootin' activities, it's nice that they've added two small belt loops (at 90 and 270) to support holsters. Doesn't work/fit for all, but very nice extra support for some.

The 9mm +P ammo I shot was a batch I picked up at my LGS when the first big ammo crunch hit in 2020. It was the only defense load they had left in the store at the time. I tested a few it out of my Beretta 92FS and it was definitely a handful. Since then, I've set it aside for use out of my H&K SP5. The SP5's longer barrel means that the +P load will go more to moving the bullet faster rather than the muzzle flash. The roller delayed blowback action dampens the recoil from a +P load to almost nothing.

163 Also had this happy little happenstance - sra blaster sent her son to the range and so she went in the laager and she asked how many ARs do we have? This is a question which previously had been...ambiguous. Actually, the known number was three, and actual number was 4.

So I said, we have three or four - oh, four, I guess. She said "good." So now all of the guns are present and accounted for. Well, except they are in the bottom of the creek. But otherwise - all good!

Tavors with sufficient service life will be put into larger emergency stocks now planned*. Sorry for no details, but the basic news is M4geryk is the future. More imports of Colt rifles also planned for near future.

Yes for the M1A1 and M1A2. Not so on the older M60 and M48 tanks, nor the WWII M4 Sherman. The Israelis were the first to use this hatch design. They heavily modified their tanks, including WWII Shermans, to include the latest modifications based on hard won combat experience. Heavily up-gunned 105mm armed versions of the Sherman remained in Israeli service into the 1980s.

Man, I could tell you some stories; not enough room here. Very briefly, it was, indeed, the era of the Cocaine Cowboys, when bodies were getting dumped on the side of I-95 about once per week. I read a story in the newspaper one time that employees at the local Federal Reserve branch were getting headaches, and it turned out that it was because so much of the money flowing through there was tainted with cocaine. Purchased our first house in Kendall in Dade County in 1985. Found out after the fact that the house next door had been rented out to two drug dealers in succession - both of them were murdered in the house, one of them with a chain saw (don't know if that was life imitating art or the reverse)

193 I rise to revise and extend my remarks. Looking for the IDF/Tavor article, found a debunking thereof instead. Well, at least partially. Article at The Firearm Blog

https://tinyurl.com/y6yuzh4w

has statement by IDF that additional Tavors (and MicroTavors, X95s) will in fact be procured.

But the earlier article had extensive detail on move towards an M4-type platform, and retirement of Tavor as standard service rifle. I think taken together these two articles leave many questions. Possible a little bit of both is correct. In any case we'll see fairly soon, or whenever the IDF's current busy work schedule clears up (cough cough, Lebanon next).

194 Posted by: rhomboid at March 10, 2024 08:26 PM (GcNJ2)

Possibly because they're getting unsat reports about the Tavor's performance in combat from the infantry? Bullpup rifles have drawbacks that may be a problem in intense urban ground combat (like what you'd expect in Gaza). They're not as instinctive to reload w/o taking your eyes off the target downrange. They can be difficult to shoot around corners due to the ejection port coming up against the wall/corner. The compact size of the bullpup also offers less space to add attachments such as vertical grips, red dot sights, lights, night/thermal vision, and other devices to 1913 rail sections relative to a rifle w/ a more conventional layout like an M4.

Posted by: G'rump928(c) at March 10, 2024 08:42 PM (aD39U)

If you care about "muzzling" or "sweeping" people, then the horizontal is right out. Though they make ones that are tilted a bit, so, at least when you put a hand on it, it isn't aimed exactly at the person behind you.

If your gun is largish (say, a full-size GI 1911), then vertical becomes necessary just to prevent the barrel from sticking the back of your jacket and printing. Unless you're a big guy with lots of horizontal acreage.

I think the vertical ones require a little training to get the disengagement (from the holster) nice and smooth. But horizontals often require a thumb break just to hold the gun in.

Also, tie it to your belt to keep it from getting dangly and visible when you bend over.

221 Apology for the off-topic comment (well, it's a sub-comment, in response to another), but "Godzilla, Minus One" was a fairly interesting movie (I have not seen 20 feature films in 15 years, so adjust accordingly). An actual movie, not just a sci-fi CGI cheesy thriller. Especially interesting were the early post-war Japan social and political elements (accurate), they even illustrated the actual origin of the new Japanese navy (Naval Self-Defense Force, Kaijo Jie-etai).

Part of Greg Ellifritz's Tactical First Aid class is using sutures on a chicken thigh to close up a slit. Then he passed out the surgical stapler, which is so much easier to use, and the class all laughed at the (avoidable) time we'd wasted using the suture needle.
