Given that this dates from 1926 - a period of relative prosperity and when mechanization was in full swing - this town has no excuse for its egregious failure in street snow clearance.
The snowy sidewalks in the central business district are at least as bad. These shopkeepers obviously don't care about keeping their approaches clear. This place is going to become a slum the moment the great crash happens in a few years. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 15, 2024 09:37 AM (HnUIn) 43

Just took a peek at other Glenn O. Coleman painting - a lot of them have the same grayness. Born the same year as Edward Hopper:
an American artist born in the Midwest and relocated to New York City to pursue a career as an illustrator of urban modernity and, subsequently, as a modernist painter. He is best known for his anecdotal drawings of various enclaves of Lower Manhattan begun in 1905, which he later transcribed into lithographs in 1928. Today, Coleman's graphic renderings of the Bowery, the Lower East Side, and Chinatown stand as endearing documents of people and places of a bygone era. His mentor Robert Henri (1865-1929) declared: " (Coleman's work) is the record of a certain life drama going on about us here in New York ... (his) material is ... a page of life."$\sp1$ Indeed, Coleman is still cited for his expressive verism of New York City's urban genre, and such is his work that typifies the broader appeal of those artists known collectively as the Ashcan School--the second generation of New York Realists. " So New York-y!! Oh look - he has a painting from the Cape Ann area, too: "Rockport:" https://tinyurl.com/3mwc8btj Posted by: Lizzy at March 15, 2024 09:52 AM (6IDWi) 102

It's amazing how similar main streets in small Southwest towns look, in terms of architecture and arrangement. They're the same in a number of states whether the town is thriving or nearly dead, as long as the town was started circa 1900.

Snow improves the look of NYC for about an hour and a half. Then, the car and bus exhaust, along with the mix the Sanitation Department spreads on the streets, leads to a grimy grey, brown, slush that pools around every corner/sewer/ storm drain. Commuters have to stomp through/around it, ruining their expensive Italian shoes. And I forgot to mention the dog urine, though today that might be augmented by homeless, bum, urine. Not a good look.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 15, 2024 09:51 AM (J2vNu) ++++ I've long found Sherman amusing. A lot of his stuff is extremely Jewish and I find it hilarious. Lyft and Uber say they will leave Minneapolis after city council forces them to pay drivers more. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Lyft and Uber said they will cease operations in Minneapolis after the city’s council voted Thursday to override a mayoral veto and require that ride-hailing services increase driver wages to the equivalent of the local minimum wage of $15.57 an hour.
That's definitely a bad look for Uber and Lyft. Good riddance, and fuck 'em both. Predatory corporation sez wut? Some other outfit will take over or taxis will take up the slack. The fares are a little less than taxis because their drivers are paid slave wages and they have no regulations. Their presence also suppresses the use of mass transit. Uber and Lyft: "the people driving our cars are so unskilled, they don't deserve the basic wage of a human being". "Don't worry about safety - we don't!" On-demand door-to-door will always beat mass-transit, especially for those with mobility issues and limited minority community routes. US cities have a long way to go before mass transportation is as well-meshed with daily living as Europe. Kurt Schlichter: Republicans Should Consider the Innovative Strategy of Not Screwing This Up
- Hey! Let's try to keep this discussion in the realm of reality. Last week, he wrote a column bemoaning the lack of a coherent, proactive legal strategy. This week, the new people in charge of the RNC fired most of the existing "leaders", and cited a coherent, proactive legal strategy as their goal, as well as making sure that donors see that their money is well spent. (see the link below) It seems to me that things are moving in the right direction. Sure, we need to see if the results match the rhetoric, but recognition of the problems is a lot more than we ever got from the old crew. According to the Washington Post, former chair Ronna McDaniel was "blindsided by the speed of the changes." I'm sure she was. That's why she needed to go. https://tinyurl.com/4xpbfpdn Posted by: Archimedes at March 15, 2024 10:09 AM (CsUN+) 192

Use RideShare to destroy the established taxi service, then continue to increase regulatory and financial burdens on the RideShares until mass transit is finally the better option. Speaking of engineering drawings, during the War, there was a serious shortage of Merlin engines and Rolls-Royce didn't have the production capacity. They licensed production to Packard (the only company the thought had the manufacturing quality to make them successfully) and shipped the plans over.
Packard had to put most of its engineering team (and hire a bunch more skilled labor) to convert the plans from European-style "First Quadrant" projections into American-style "Third Quadrant" projections to ready them for manufacturing and assembly teams. Geometry was the only junior high or high school math class I actually liked. There was the challenge of the logic puzzle, the clues (the axioms, etc.), and it was fun to "see a path" to the proof. I liked it especially because there was no arithmetic, and before calculators, I did poorly at that. I knew my times tables and so forth, but under pressure of an exam I'd make a mistake in arithmetic, and I'd lose points.

Was trying to narrow down (East Side?) the location with the elevated rail in the background & a variety of shops below. I'd hang Glenn O. Coleman paintings of NYC primarily for their history. Thanks.
NY curbed dot com: History of NY City's Elevated Trains LONGFORM, The elevated era, The “el” was the city’s first real attempt to reclaim the street In part, New York needed a mass transit solution. The new “el,” as the train soon came to be known, was the city’s first real stab at reclaiming the street. For the next 80 years, the elevated railway would shape the city, spurring rival transit developments, pushing the city’s population outward, and changing the architectural fabric of the city. Today, New Yorkers who remember them are nostalgic for the elevated railways. But as New York struggles with an antiquated and seemingly unfixable subway system, snarled street traffic, and few viable alternatives, the story of the elevated railway seems a cautionary tale about how politics and greed are too often the motivating forces behind decisions that affect millions of New Yorkers." Interesting w/ the involvement of Boss Tweed & other characters, and still the same in many ways. Posted by: L - RINOs. Explaining the judges rulling in the Fani case:
Wade is a perjurer - so he is out. Fani who gave the same testimony as he did is truthful. The Cell phone data only counts in criminal trials, and only if the defendant is not a Democrat. The witnesses who said the relationship started earlier than Fani said it did, are delusional, since they didn't have a porn tape of the two of them. Bottom line Fani gets to decide if she goes or stays. Because she is the only person telling the truth. Posted by: An Observation sez China Joe not my president at March 15, 2024 10:55 AM (CecP5) 402

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at March 15, 2024 10:51 AM (0FoWg) Depends on how high you are considered to own above your property, which seems to vary. If someone flies a drone into your yard, is it legal to shoot it down?
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice Actually looked into that when my sister and her convict boyfriend were harrassing Dad before he died. Short answer. 'No'. They fall under FAA rule in Texas (where it happened) and it is a felony to shoot at it. Especially if you miss and it gets video of you doing it, AND is owned by a jackass that needs killing that will turn you in for the LOLs. Find out whom the pilot is. Then go assault the coon dog shit out of him. That charge is much lighter than the FAA felony. Put up some heavy clear fishing lines with lead sinkers to foul the props over your yard. If he crashes it in your yard, beat the shit out him when he tries to trespass and retrieve it. Ensure he falls on it in such a way that it is destroyed. The reason that the Bee headline is so crude is that it's making fun of another recent Canadian court case... a judge opined that it was inappropriate to refer to a rape victim as a "woman" and the documents should have called her a "person with a vagina".
