Daily Tech News 8 March 2024

Top Story

  • The worst person in the world just made a good point: EU Bookburner General Thierry Breton has confirmed his agency is investigating Apple over its decision to cancel Epic Games' developer account. (Tech Crunch)

Apple did this specifically to prevent Epic Games opening its own app store as is permitted under the new EU regulations.

Breton pointed out that the regulations that force Google and Apple to open up their platforms also forbid those companies from using pretexts to keep their platforms effectively closed.

As we've seen, the EU isn't shy about fining American companies billions of dollars, because for them it's free money.

And it's reached a point where I don't blame them. Watching one group of communist bleed another group of communists dry is better entertainment than you can find almost anywhere.

All Tech Companies Suck Rant of the Day

I just bought a Moto G54 because (a) Motorola phones run a pretty clean version of Android, (b) it has a headphone jack and a microSD slot, (c) it has pretty good specs, with 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, an FHD+ screen, dual A78 cores and six A55 cores, and a 50 megapixel main camera with image stabilisation, and (d) it was dirt cheap at under $130 including sales tax and delivery.

Turns out they make you jump through hoops and void your warranty if you want to unlock the bootloader and install a fully open source operating system but with all the other nonsense going on I'm finding it hard to get outraged. Yeah, it's sucky behaviour, but what am I going to do, pay four times as much for a three year old iPhone that is locked down harder than Motorola could ever dream of?

But Not as Much as a Certain Vtuber Company Video of the Day

Nijisanji's standard contract has leaked - the English language version, since it's a Japanese company - and though it's quite long it all boils down to two simple points:

1. We own you.
2. We owe you nothing.

There's a clause in there that if you are deemed to have "betrayed" the company, they can not only fire you without further notice but claw back everything they have paid you for the past twelve months.

There's another clause that they can force their vtubers to make appearances and issue press releases - which I suspect is what they used on Elira in the infamous hostage video - and another where they can force you to relocate at your own expense.

Oh, and there's another clause that they can change the contract at any time and the next time you stream you are automatically considered to have accepted the new terms. Of course, streaming is the only way you can make money, but see points 1 and 2 above.

People still sign up for this because big vtubers make good money - solid six figures after YouTube and the agency take their cuts - but that's limited to Hololive (which has forty talents with over a million subscribers each) and a handful of others. Smaller corporations and independent channels have a tough a hard time of it.

Secret Lives of Vegetables Video of the Day

Two of those handful of others are Filian - who hosted the annual vtuber awards recently - and Dokibird, who broke out of Nijisanji and kicked off much of the recent drama, both very successful independent vtubers.

Here Dokibird explains to Filian explain what is really going on.

Disclaimer: Nijisanji is basically a cat in corporate form.

Depends on the company.

Twitter said "yeah, whatever" and closed its European offices and laid everybody off. The EU told them they couldn't do that, but the offices remain closed and the staff remain unemployed.

Apple is in a tougher position because unlike a social media platform its products could be banned from sale in Europe.

This morning I'm taking my coffee in one of the blue enameled camping mugs I bought on eBay. Not sure I like it for everyday. I know I won't be able to microwave it to reheat my coffee as I do with china mugs; it's enameled metal. A nice change from the usual, though.

28 Good morning! Day two of the Generac installation will commence around 0900 and they say it'll take 6-8 hours to replace the electrical panel (1968 model) and bring it up to standards for todays code. And it's gonna rain again today. So I'm gonna figure 8-10 hours with no electricity.

And the plumber still needs to come and hook up the gas line to the generator. And they still need to run the new 50A service line to the back yard and install the disconnect out there.

If you're going to take a look at the devotional, consider another translation for the Ephesians passage, because that one is a mess. They translate it as "every ethnic group" instead of " whole family". You mean God created all ethnic groups? What a revelation!!/sarc . The KJV is better.

Then there is the one time monetary offer if Nijisanji thinks you need better equipment they will pay the VTuber roughly $1,333US for the equipment. And I am reading 1,333 as almost spelling 'leet.'

I guess one could park an LHD a few miles off the coast, and ferry supplies into a secure area set up on the beach in Gaza.

LHD's are already using vehicle mounted drone defense systems by chaining a Marine drone defense capable vehicle on the flight deck of the LHD.

Other than that, it's gone be a shit show.

And either way, it simply prolongs the war.

Sound theory.

I work professionally with protection dogs. I've been thinking about these GSDs and the reasons, and have been listening to other trainers speculate. One possibility (my preferred one) is that the dogs, by genetic draw, are somewhat insecure and inclined to fear bite as a coping mechanism to the chaos and lack of clear handler leadership in their lives (which these dogs generally require). Once a fearful dog bites and succeeds in seemingly "solving" its problem (driving the object away or inciting a fearful reaction of its own), the behavior is reinforced.

An experienced trainer I respect proposes that the dogs recognize their owner's (Joe Biden) feebleness and are overreacting to the "threats" around him as protection.

I think it's more a matter of the chaos around them and their total lack of leadership to help them deal with it compounded with poor guardian breed genetics. That is, I wonder how much actual time Biden has with them at all.

No kidding. Dogs are highly mimetic. That is a reason why many people "introduce" their dogs to strangers or the pet's owners will shake hands and talk calmly and friendly to someone to lower the dog's defenses.

A dog can sense the owner stiffening up when approaching some stranger who is unfamiliar to both of them.

So in Biden's case, I would wager that he is routinely humiliated by his family and staff - ergo the uncomfortable lies about Joe's aggressiveness to the staff. They lie about everything

Joe has to run on his record which has been financially devastating to the poor and middle class. People remember just four years ago when they had money to spend, and didn't have tapped out credit cards.

Personally, I was forced into paying off a second mortgage when interest rates took off, and another large expenditure which severely reduced any slight financial cushion I might have had. It is going to take years to rebuild in my case. I'm sure tens of millions are in a helluva lot worse shape then I am.

My neighbor's dead tree collapsed onto my yard about a month ago and they finally got around to having someone deal with the remains (I did all that I could do with a 14" chainsaw). I was getting to the point where I would rent a Bobcat to move it to my burn pile but his crew showed up. I asked them where they were going to dump the wood, they said in a landfill, I volunteered my burn pile which was Right Near There, they figured it would save time and money.

An hour later, the neighbor comes storming up to my door screaming and yelling that it isn't my business about the tree and that since they were paying for the removal I had absolutely no say on how they should deal with it.

I'm now going to wait for the winds to be in the right direction where the smoke envelopes their house. It was a big tree, lots to burn.

have to empty the dishwasher
make my bed (just kidding. I'm a grown ass man- I don't have to make my bed if I don't want to.)
So yeah- pretty busy.

180 115 So how do we square the circle on the confirmation of Da Joos being raped, both alive and dead, and the insistence on proportional response?

I'm not entirely clear why people who have no skin in the game are somehow the sole authority on how those with the most to lose should defend themselves against further danger.
Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at March 08, 2024 07:03 AM (TfEvu)

Once you rape, torture, and kill kids, there's no such this as proportional response b/c any response you make will not be enough...so all of the playbook is open.

There's some infestation killing off the ash (I think) in this area. Trees dropping even under windless conditions. Massive 70 to 100 foot tall trees. Lost power last week, twice already this year due to trees. I never thought of it until I saw a map recently but I actually live inside of the Appalachian mountain range. Twenty miles outside of Philadelphia.
