Election Update

The Dirty Little Secret of the 2024 Campaign

We all know what's going wrong for Biden: He's widely perceived as too old to be running again; Americans remain unhappy with the economy, deeply enraged over border policy and alarmed by the brush fires around the world. Biden came into office promising normalcy, and he has instead delivered chaos.

But there's something else going on, too.

Joe Biden is losing to Donald Trump because of a dirty little secret: Donald Trump is actually the moderate in this race.

On nearly every issue, Trump is closer to the median voter than Biden. Biden won the Democratic primaries over Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2020 because voters thought he would tack toward the center, away from the insanity of The Squad in Congress -- borderline psychotics like Reps. Cori Bush, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar. Instead, he entered office believing that he had a mandate for transformation, that he could become our age's FDR or LBJ.

And so Biden abandoned the middle.

Here's my take, and it's worth every cent you paid for it. Trump can win if can keep the election about Biden. Biden can win if Trump makes the election about Trump. Unfortunately, keeping the focus away from himself is not Trump's strong suit. That's assuming that the election is relatively fair. I have no doubt that the Commies have been refining and preparing their fraudulent vote machine for the past 4 years. Trump can beat the margin of error. I'm not sure anybody can beat the margin of fraud.

What Really Grinds Your Gears?

grinds my gears.jpg

That's tonight's question. I'll start. I really get annoyed when people ghost me. Look, say yes, say no, say you changed your mind, I don't care, but don't ask me to do something and then ignore me. This happened 3 times this week, all in Pa (so maybe it's Pennsylvanians who grind my gears).

Case one: A guy texts me saying he needs insurance, we scheduled a time to talk. We do, he picks a policy, we fill out the paperwork, but he doesn't have his payment info on him, he's at work. Asked me to call in the evening. I do, no answer. Next morning he calls me and apologises, says he'll call back with the info at lunch. He doesn't call, and doesn't respond to any of my texts or calls. Look, if you changed your mind, just tell me, I won't be mad, promise.

Case two: A lady asked me to get together all her options for a certain type of policy. I tell her it'll take me about half an hour. She says “great!”. I get the info together, but she never answers my call or responds to texts or emails.

Case three: A lady tells me what she needs. Part of it I can do, part of it I can't. I put her with another agent for the part I can't do and he takes good care of her, she's really happy. We schedule to take care of my part the next morning. Guess what happened the next morning? Poof! She's in the wind.

I know it's part of the business, but I really wish people would just answer when I do something that they've asked me to do. It's just so...rude!

So what grinds your gears?

The Poison That's Killing The West

We Are the Victims and Everything We Do is Justified

At the heart of everything from the debate over the Gaza War to DEI to toxic interpersonal relationships is a disastrous loop known as the “self-reinforcing victim/villain” cycle.

The self-reinforcing victim/villain cycle is a deceptively simple and incredibly destructive paradigm for any kind of relationship, national, communal or personal, in which one party constantly attacks the other while claiming that it is the victim fighting against oppression.

The paradigm is guided by the idea that there is a permanently fixed victim and villain, that the victim is constantly suffering attacks from the villain and that anything the victim does is justified because he or she has no agency except to resist the assaults of the villain.

While some Hamas supporters have lied or tried to cover up the atrocities of Oct 7, Ghazi Hammad, a Hamas official, initially denied them, but then burst out with, “the existence of Israel is what causes all that pain, blood, and tears. It is Israel, not us. We are the victims of the occupation. Period. Therefore, nobody should blame us for the things we do. On October 7, October 10, October 1,000,000 – everything we do is justified.”

“We are the victims”, “nobody should blame us” and “everything we do is justified” perfectly capture the cruel workings of the cycle. So many westerners have sided with Hamas because they accept, incorporate and make use of the same cycle in their own politics and lives.

If we can't bring back the idea of personal agency and responsibility for one's actions, along with a societal moral code of right and wrong, we are doomed.

Is This A Solution?

Four Lessons for a Fragile America

The United States’ sprawling geography has long encouraged the dispersion of people, but since World War II we have buoyantly pursued an American dream that has so disconnected us from each other that it is starting to look like an illusion. We’ve been allured by the siren songs of individual autonomy, national economic growth, and modernist utopian planning. These are fueled by consumption and carried out at a scale that discourages and distracts us from being persons in space and time. Today, physical landscapes are designed for vehicles rather than relationships, and many neighbors have nothing in common with each other besides geography. Our smartphones and other devices make us feel that we inhabit a digital space—a space that makes promises about belonging that it cannot keep.

The result of all these changes is predictable: We have endless choices, and yet feel alienated from our surroundings because we do not belong anywhere and feel powerless to do anything about our circumstances. Individuals experience growing anxiety, anomie, anger—and our society suffers from mistrust and polarization of our politics. The health of Americans has been declining relative to other developed countries for over four decades, a trajectory that significantly worsened in the 2010s (that is, pre-COVID). While we often talk about economic inequality, social inequality—differences in how much one is supported or held back by one’s family, neighbors, friends, and social network—is arguably a much larger problem.

The author offers the example of the Orthodox Jewish community as a solution, and he makes a lot of good points. He makes some bad ones too, but the biggest problem that I see is that the Orthodox Jewish community is separate and distinct from the larger society it exists in. The same is true of the other communities he points to: The Amish, Mormons and Catholics. All of them exits “in but not of” the larger society as a whole. Oh, and they're all religious groups as well. You could throw in Muslim communities centered on the local mosque as well. How do you make it work for a secular, multi-cultural America as a whole?

That's Just Plain Meme!

If Memes Are Illegal, All Speech Will Become Illegal

Mackey, the man behind the now-defunct Twitter persona Ricky Vaughn, was convicted on March 31 of this year of “conspiracy against rights” in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 241, a Reconstruction Era law designed to counteract the violent voter suppression tactics of the Ku Klux Klan. In October, Mackey was sentenced to seven months in federal prison.

Mackey’s alleged conspiracy? Posting a joke meme on Twitter.

Really. See for yourself.

The offending tweet features an image of a mock political flier, which, according to federal prosecutors, was aimed at deceiving Hillary Clinton voters with the text, “Avoid the line. Vote from home. Text ‘Hillary’ to 59925.” Another tweet, also named in the suit, instructs readers to cast their vote by posting the word “Hillary” to Facebook and Twitter alongside the hashtag #PresidentialElection.

The case really is the canary in the coal mine of the end of free speech.

The other night I mentioned what happened to my 93 yr old mother. I haven't posted in a night or two (hell, I don't know what day it is really). Miley and I both are exhausted, and I'm gonna hit the sack soon, but here's what happened:

My mother likely had a "slight" ischemic stroke. As Johnny Carson used to say, "I did not know that", but subdural brain bleeding can cause ischemic strokes due to pressure, and maybe some other mechanism.

The docs think that's what happened to Mama. They've transferred her to this place in Mauldin, SC, "Encompass Health Care", which does stroke/brain injury rehab. It's a fairly new place, and seems nice and clean. Staff seems to be pretty good.

He speech has been affected, and there appears to be some slight damage to the circuits that control her right hand and arm. She can move them, but there's some fine motor problems, for say holding a pen and writing....

At any rate, my mother appears to be in good hands. She can understand what you're saying apparently, but just can speak back too well. She can say short, simple things like "yes", "no", and so forth, but when she attempts to say a detailed, longer sentence, it's just a Biden-esque jumble of sounds.

Anyway, at this rehab place, they're going to do intensive speech therapy and some other things. Stay should be about 2 weeks, and depending on her status, they'll either discharge her back home with Miley and me, or a longer stay at skilled nursing.

She's comfortable, not upset or in distress, and I think she's in pretty good hands.

73 So what grinds your gears?

I have lately been involved in strategic planning and leadership meetings for a local org.

Other parties attending the meetings claim to be adults but how some folks will just go off topic and start to discuss their favorite sous vide recipe while someone else has the floor! is simply maddening.

I've taken to sarcasm and grade school level shaming.

The fact that "insurance" (of many and various kinds) is THE NUMBER ONE EXPENSE in our household!!!!!

It's not your fault that "insurance" is required to keep from going broke all at once due to some calamity or other.

Yes, because I'm a normal human being. It's also the opinion of Tucker, VDH and many others.

You keep insisting that this was a base speech and it was but that is not the purpose of a SOTU speech. Particularly not for a sitting president who is historically unpopular and even his base wants someone else.

The SOTU is a chance for the president to unite the country. It is a unique mix of pomp and politics and Joe blew it. He came across as divine and angry not presidential.

The left and media would cheer for him no matter what. They would cheer for a rabid dog. Irrelevant. He brought nobody new back to him. He slurred and stumbled his way through the speech but was not impressive or presidential. Any bump he gets will be fleeting. I have no idea what he set out to do but he didn't help himself at all no matter what your interpretation.

He was forged in a celestial cock smelter by the Lord, to plague everyone and remind them that no matter how nasty other people may be, they're not so bad. They're not made of .9999 fine, bullion grade dickonium like Dan is.

Anyway, a couple months back, this perambulating dong asked me for a big favor on short notice, and I pulled it off. Nice work, on a PITA job, too. After he approved the production art, he said - I'm not kidding - "I hope you're glad I gave you the opportunity to do this for me."

He aphasia seems to be "improved" if you can call it that. At first, her attempts at speech were just nonsense sounds. But now, she can form actual words, but they're the wrong words, in the wrong order, but actual words.

It's something to see. She understands things. She wants to say something, and knows it's not coming out right. You can see the frustration in her eyes and her facial expressions. "Why can't I talk right?!"

>>The SOTU is a chance for the president to unite the country. It is a unique mix of pomp and politics and Joe blew it. He came across as divine and angry not presidential.

As ever, you seem to be stuck pining for a world that simply no longer exists.

The purpose of the speech was not to unify, it was to divide, to create a boogeyman, to motivate and reassure his foot soldiers, to provide talking points to his apparatchiks in the MSM, etc.

And to that extent, it was successful.

What he did tonight has been the stock and trade of pretty much every Democrat President as far as can think back.

Ultimately, the speech will be forgotten in a week, but that was not the point of this speech, to be memorable.

But I paid the price with a very wet car interior when I realized my F-Up and ran across the parking lot to remedy that with lightning blasting all around. The hail was impressive as well.

From the establishment of mankind on earth,

He perishes forever like his refuse;

Connected to machines. Can't seem to live our lives without doing so.

Interesting comment on why kids are depressed today. They live on-line and see nfluencers having great life, not knowing how fake those videos are. For example, ther is a private aircraft cabin one can rent to shoot film. Influencers were found to be using that business service to create envy and to get clicks. But mostly to create envy. Kids see that and compare their lives to fantasy make-believe and no wonder they get depressed. The comment: 'Kids today are so invested in watching other people 'live' their lives on-line they don't bother living their own lives.'

Now we're hooked up good and proper to The Machine. Pretty soon, we'll have people 'working' on machinery about which they have no clue how it actually works. Things will break down, then more and faster. There'll be DEI physical casualties along with the inevitable societal breakdown, but those omelets, the eggs don't break themselves.

334 Before I go to bed, just wanted to share something off-topic.

Here in SoCal just south of the Nightwatch castle, in the forest on the shores of a place called "Big Bear Lake" sits a high Jeffery's Pine and atop that, a nest which is home to a pair of local Bald Eagles, "Jackie & Shadow." The Friend's of the Big Bear Valley" got together a few years back and were able to mount a camera during the off season and now affords us 24/7 viewing when the Eagles are actively nesting.

This year Jackie laid a historic 3 eggs and views of the feed have gone beyond 30,000 as we await the "pipping" or the new eagles busting out of their shells.

Alas, the 1st egg has gone past the usual cycle and has been deemed "unviable" at this point.

Hope holds out for the other 2 eggs over the weekend into early next week.

Well, I think I found something to distract me from my misery tonight. Found this YouTube channel a while ago, a plus-size couple and the wife makes cakes endlessly and the husband eats them. Right now I'm watching her make a pound cake and GOD I can taste that batter. I don't want to lick the bowl, I want to just grab a spoon and eat. She talks through it, of course. "Now, we're gonna scrape those eggs down, and use our seven-pound cake tin. I've got nothing but eeeggggs, suuugah, butteh, and flow-wer in there now." A pale lemon cloud of fluff in the pan. God help me.

394 He's supposed to have a nurse with him 24/7. When I'm there, she gets a bit of a break on watching him as closely, and Dad (as I call my FIL) has someone that he knows cares about him with him.
Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at March 08, 2024 01:43

Went thru this w/ Dad a few months ago. Afib and other conditions landed him in the hosp when I was visiting. At first he was so out of it that he kept trying to get out of the bed.

They had nurses watching him 24/7 but I was able to give them some relief and get thru to him a little bit of reassurance.

He's home now, doing fine at 87 with some assistance. I'm amzed, but he's a tough old bird.

395 Well, past midnight here, and kind of chilly tonight. Think I will put the electric blanket back on the bed. Night, Horde.

399 Joetato was amazing tonight. Really amazing. I figured he would stroke out from all the speed! And, damn, he was *lit* for the STFU...

I had actually 'bought the square' that had him checking out on Jan 21st, 2023, to pave the way for DeepThroat's 10 years' reign of terror.

Who knows what we'll get next?

405 Morning, insomaniacals! 'Tis Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished! A warm 69 F. here, cloudy, not much wind, with rain expected this p.m. We all hope it won't be the frog-drowner we had on Monday afternoon. I got two lovely flat tires out of it when I hit a water-shrouded pothole in my stunning and talented apartment dump.

Got a Zoom meeting about the budget software this a.m., and then I have to leave a little early, to visit the apt. office and sign the lease they finally delivered.

406 And I'm trying to talk myself into working out. Probably won't be able to with lingering rain tomorrow a.m. I got about enough sleep despite not locking the cats out. Stirling left me alone until he heard me stir about twenty minutes ago. Dagny the Silent Siberian sleeps with me on occasion, but she never tries to get me up.

407 How'd Grandpa Simpson work out on TV last night?

I'm sorry. That's really unfair. Grandpa Simpson was irritable and troublesome, but he was in touch with his reality. F. Joe is . . . not.

408 Hi, Wolfus!

Grampa demento was in fine form tonight-- started right off with the shouting. Lies, vote-buying, lies, excuse-making... more lies...

It was a sh!tshow, of course. More campaign speechifying than addressing the state of our country's affairs. Bleh. Zero stars.

Posted by: JQ at March 08, 2024 03:42 AM (njWTi)

409 I didn't watch the SOTU speech, I assume I'll hear it over and over until November anyway. I hate the ass kissing, and if only the congress would bring their little children to the chamber so the President could kiss and sniff each and everyone of them.
And Nancy wasn't sitting up there with her weird little clap and tearing up the speech after it was over. She would probably take Biden's speech home and have it framed to hang it in her home office, or bedroom, minus her 'husband'.

410 German does not have a word for everything. They arguably have far fewer words than we do. The two most unique features of German are

1. Unlike French (which is regulated by a prissy "Academy"), German is not only willing but extremely eager to adopt foreign words without modification. That is why they don't bother coming up with new words for things there are already good names for like 'taunting' and 'touchdown'.

2. The idea that German has "lots of words" comes from their love of compound words, where they take several everyday words and combine them into what (to a non-speaker) looks like a monstrously long new word. Let me give you three examples from World War 2:

-Tank = 'Panzerkampfwagen' [Literally 'Armored War Vehicle']

-Halftrack = 'Sonderkraftfahrzeug' [Literally 'Special Purpose Vehicle', though the name could be used for all manner of military vehicles in spite of though being remembered solely as a designation for halftracks]

-Submarine = 'Unterseeboot' [Literally 'Under Sea Boat']

I help a couple of German speaking YouTubers edit their English language scripts on military history topics, so I know a little about this topic.

Hi, JQ! I expected no less, but like all of us, I hoped he'd have a real crash on camera. (Did he say "Anyway . . ." at any point? I had that in the office pool.) (Just kidding; everybody at my office is prob. an F. Joe booster if not an outright Trump hater, so I don't engage with them on the topic.)

412 I gotta figure out how to get on *all* the gummint gravy trains...

Fk it, ya know? These asshoes are hellbent on trashing the country, breaking its bank... why shouldn't I get some filthy lucre out of the deal? Seriously.

Not striking any matches, but fully onboard with letting it burn. There's nothing left to save.

Gimme that black pill

Posted by: JQ at March 08, 2024 03:49 AM (njWTi)

413 Yeah, Wolfus, I was (like many others) hoping to see him stroke out on live teevee.

Alas...

But it would be better if he can hang on until after Selection Day. Much funnier then!

418 320 We used to have valid child care, it was called FAMILIES.
Husbands had jobs and the family made do on his salary so that mom could stay home and take care of the kids and the home. It was a solid, dangerous, functioning unit.
