Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

Congratulations Are in Order

For all of the criticism Nikki Haley has accrued thanks to her firm opposition to the base, pro-establishment positions and Party dealings, her achievements cannot be understated. Throughout her presidential campaign, she remained committed to her promise to deliver what the people don't want, but what the Party insiders very much do. Her efforts have been blessed with great success - even historic success. Haley can confidently wrap up her campaign, confident in the knowledge that she has done something that has never been done before.

As the talking heads this morning proclaimed while barely holding back their disappointment over the "Super Tuesday" results, Nikki Haley achieved an historic "First" (and not of the Sponge variety)! She is the first Republican woman to win a presidential primary. And not just one, she smashed the old record by winning two primaries! She won her native homeland of Washington, DC as well as a staggering 6.7% of the Super Tuesday states. Truly, an accomplishment for the ages.

Hats off to Nikki Haley. Between her campaign and the Nikki-boosting PACs, she managed to suck north of $130 million out of the Republican establishment per OpenSecrets. In keeping with Haley's political philosophy, over three quarters of her fundraising came from large donors. Her campaign and PACs have torched at least $115 million. It takes talent and hard work to burn through that much Establishment money in a matter of months and have nothing to show for it. Quite an achievement.

Nikki Haley also deserves significant credit for learning a lesson that countless others have learned before. Like Michael Bloomberg before her, she has demonstrated that flushing away large sums of money and flooding the airwaves with the message won't deliver victory for a hated candidate and platform. Time and again, US presidential hopefuls try this strategy and time and again they finally bow out of the contest, assured of their defeat. This is not new, but it was apparently new to Haley. She has now gained a valuable piece of experience, so chalk up another accomplishment.

Nikki Haley also managed to accomplish something fairly few well-known and Party-backed candidates have managed before. Haley was a "real" candidate, with real backing and decent name recognition. Despite this, she achieved the unusual state of total non-consideration. There have been many passionate and even vicious arguments over the Republican candidates. Trump and DeSantis both raised everything from unwavering enthusiasm to unhinged ire among their supporters and detractors. Nikki Haley managed to raise nothing but contempt from the base and nothing but a weary sense of duty from the check-writing establishment. The only passion for Haley was the low-rent public passion-for-hire of washed-up and irrelevant ConInc pundits desperately trying to maintain their own alms from the establishment check-writers.

Despite all of her accomplishments, she has now suspended her campaign. It's over, though surely some operations will continue for a bit, as her campaign still has a few million dollars to incinerate. Haley's accomplishments represent a lesson learned by many before her and that will surely be learned by many that follow in the increasingly expensive and irrelevant presidential campaign pageantry: that no amount of money, shrieking, laudatory press or think-pieces can make people want you.

36 Karl Rove issues dire warning for Trump as GOP fractures on Super Tuesday. "There's still some work to be done to unify the Republican Party," Rove said. "That's going to depend a lot on his tone tonight and whether or not he stops doing things like calling her birdbrained and threatening that if you give money to her campaign you're going to be permanently banned."

Rove noted Haley drew more than 20 percent of the vote in many states such as Virginia, Massachusetts and Maine...Rove has previously warned the GOP is heading for self-destruction if they give the former president another nomination.

Haley is at 237,000 in VA right now. If even 1% of of those voters don't vote for drumpf that's 2370 votes lost. doesn't sound like much but in this swing states the margins are razor thin and things like that add up.

Joe and the Dem team are earning many more absolute votes vs the magats.

Rove is one of the principal architects of the modern (make that medieval) Republican Party. This was inevitable, even without Trump. I hope Rove gets to see the monster he fed (and that fed him) for so long collapse in a smoldering heap.

I think most if not all of the former GOP hopefuls like Vivek and Ron also suspended not ended their campaigns. It has to do with arcane campaign finance rules more than anything and not so that they can jump back in the race at a later date.

They want to exert control over the presidential primary like they do in machine states and their statewide races in places like Kentucky again.

Before 2016, they did exert that control. Look at 2012 and how Scott Walker went from conservative promise to nothing once the donors got hold of him and made him squishy on immigration.

The idea that they won't be able to do that again after Trump is gone is silly. They will do it again. Whether they can succeed is more a matter of degree than a pass/fail question.

Trump is the nominee and it's quite likely America First types will be taking over leadership of the RNC. Johnson is making some good first steps in the House and Mitch is finally leaving.

Trump has changed the GOP from a country club/business aligned party to a blue collar working man's party that is bringing in new voters all the time including minorities and younger voters who are seeing they have no future with Democrats.

Maybe for some NBA teams. I watch the Cavs and they move the ball around a lot. They'll have nights where 6-7 players score in double figures. Many of their opponents in the East play the same way. This is very entertaining to watch with all the player movement and passing.

While I appreciate LeBron for carrying the team to an NBA championship (along with Kyrie), it was ugly to watch when LeBron would go to isolation mode. It appears a lot of teams have moved on past this style of basketball.

True.

But when it "goes back" post-Trump, it will go back to a hollowed-out party with a fraction of its prior support. Yes, it will go back on policy, practice and everything else, but it will not go back to its pre-Trump level of support. When the GOP retrenches in the post-Trump era - and it absolutely will - it will be a shadow of its former self. That suits the GOP perfectly well, and they'll be happy with it as it's their ideal position. They'll grift until the end, and deliver nothing. Every year it will get smaller, but that won't bother them at all.

I was just watching the State's attorney in front of the Judge arguing basically that the Defense only wanted to embarrass and harass Willis and Wade. Willis's father was a well respected member of the community, that Bradley's text answers to Merchant were only speculative, and on and on.

Basketball was originally a very white and often very Catholic game. IIRC, many of the indoor basketball courts were in churches. The original basketball stars were white and many were Irish. It wasn't until much later did blacks enter the sport and soon after dominate it.

164 154 But when it "goes back" post-Trump, it will go back to a hollowed-out party with a fraction of its prior support.

168 Russia’s Daily Casualties in Ukraine the Highest Yet, With Almost 1,000 Men Lost Per Day

One of the more darkly hilarious parts of independent Ukraine is the Ukrainians' attempt to rewrite history - elevating Nazi collaborators to the status of national heroes and whatnot.

Up until ten minutes ago, it was universally acknowledged that "Ukraine" meant "borderland" - "krai" in Russian means edge or border, and a number of Russian provinces are called "krai" because they are on the edge of Russia.

This, of course, reflects the fact that Ukraine is on the border of Russia.

Nope, nope, nope - a Ukrainian/American professor is now explaining on X that everyone is wrong - that

""Ukraine" in Ukrainian is "Україна" [Ukrajina], which means "our country." The word actually consists of two parts: "Krajina" meaning country, and "U a preposition similar to "In"."

Nothing to do with "borderland".

Americans are voting for Trump because they are voting for what they need and think he can deliver that - and unity, kissing GOPe butt, making kissy face, blah blah blah, just isn't part of that equation.

well the way I understand it, in bowling, the guy with the most points wins

basketball is the same, but in basketball you're supposed to try to keep the other team from scoring

that's not allowed in bowling
it would pretty easy, though- as soon as your opponent rolls the ball, you run over into his lane and stop the ball with your foot

bowling matches would end in 0-0 ties

There are lots of dumb lawyers. Always have been. It's not the profession of smarties everyone thinks. (Trust me on this; I'm a lawyer who's been practicing a little more than 20 years now.)

But like a lot of institutions, law has taken a turn for the worse in the recent past. Lots of low tier law schools pumping out near-unemployable morons is part of it, along with the corruption of elite institutions, which favor many things like race over merit. There's an unquenchable hunger in the profession for black and brown and female faces, and the game is being rigged in many ways to ensure they make the grade even if they don't.

TL;DR: Things are less honest now and merit is valued less. But law has always had a fair number morons of the not-the-good-kind variety.

If you poll only Democrats, you can't get 92% approval of Biden's administration. So, Haley got the most activist of Dem voters--if they actually voted for Haley and weren't screwing around with the exit polls.

Those aren't Republicans, those very likely aren't Independents, those are activist Dems.

273 In Idaho we had to do a presidential caucus because the legislature eliminated the presidential primary for reasons I'm not entirely clear on.

It was a republican only caucus, a "party" if you will.

I checked in voters with their id, as well as counted ballots. It's a small precinct, so I either knew the voters or I knew their name.

Idaho allows party switching with 30 days notice, I believe.

I can tell you that the ballots that went for Haley came from noted democrats who posed as republicans. I know this because they all asked if they could use their own pen . They were black ink, and the voter booth had blue pens. I think they did it as a sort of passive aggressive fuck you move.

All the Haley ballots were marked with black pen. Trump won 87% to13%, which was remarkably consistent throughout the state.

312 Trump didn't do anything brilliant. He simply didn't play ball, and he walked to the front of the line. Without focus or discipline, but he walked to the front all the same.

Trump beat the prophesied one, Hillzebub, which was the Democrat equivalent of the destruction of the Temple and Babylonian exile (psychologically). They went mad, before Trump did anything.

Trump showed up and had the temerity to think that being elected President entitled him to be president and made him the leader of his party. Virtually no GOP pol was on board with that. They went mad almost as soon as the Dems did.

I'm not sure Trump really did much to expose anyone. That's not a knock on him. His existence appears to have triggered elites in both parties almost immediately. They exposed themselves.

324 Didn't like Haley & wouldn't vote for her because she hadn't finished anything to which she had been elected or appointed, and appears to support the seizing of Russian assets without precedent. And Ukraine. (We don't need another WW originating in Eastern Europe & I can't see how it's not largely a regional conflict that will last for ages, at least until the families driving it die off or other productive 'work' in lieu of war is found.)

On her behalf, she was many times better than Harris, a woman who also has Indian heritage though she shoved that aside for politics as Obama shoved his White heritage aside. Good or bad, Haley has administrative experience in an executive branch of government, as does DeSantis. Going in cold at the top of any agency or branch of government makes it almost impossible to act with purpose. It takes years of learning, or constant movement, becoming a moving target that can seldom be hit. (O)

She suspended her campaign, as did DeSantis & others, not perish.

Be careful, darlings. Think like opponents, progressives.

Russians and Ukrainians are genetically identical, and Kiev is a lot older than Moscow, so it is quite possible.

Kievan Rus was founded by Swedes who worked their way into modern Russia.

Their first capital was in the northwest - Holmgard/Novogord, but soon their capital became Kiev. This lasted from about 900 to 1200-something.

The Mongols invaded and conquered most of them and hundreds of year later Muscovy, later Russia, because the center of their civilization. Muscovy/Russia then spent hundreds of years fighting with Mongols/Poles/Lithuanians, and Turks to reclaim those old Rus lands, including most of modern Ukraine.

I think, in a way, that the biggest mistake the Democrats made when Trump was elected, was not "working" with him, and by that, I mean co-opting him.
If Schumer would have come out and decided to work and compromise with DJT in 2017, I honestly doubt that Trump would have remained as popular with his populist base.
Because they would have eventually co-opted with DJT on all the important issues.
But instead, the Democrats and in part, the GOPe went ballistic in opposing DJT, and actually pushed him to the more polarizing populist positions that he took that have actually endeared him to much of the country.

And in retrospect, they would have done even worse to Ross Perot, if he had been elected in 1992. The actual idea that Perot could fix things without any partisan loyalty was actually pretty mind-boggling. Perot was an odd duck, and I don't think he was stupid or bad, just sometimes very odd.

Besides sounding like Putin, that argument is nonsense. "Arizona was part of Mexico, so it should be part of Mexico now." Sounds dumb, doesn't it?
Talk to Ukrainians. I knew immigrant Ukraine families in the 50's who got out in the post-WW2 confusion, and they were vehement about being not Russian. I worked with Ukrainian immigrants 10 years ago, and they got pissed if you called the Russian. There is a Ukraine national identity. Look up Holodomor.
Ukraine is necessary as a buffer. If Russia takes it over, there will be Russian troops facing Polish troops. The Poles viscerally hate the Russians. There WILL be "border incidents". All the jokes upstream about Fort Sumpter and Archduke Ferdinand? Poland is a NATO member. Article 5.
Give Russia Crimea officially, as well as de facto, along with a corridor through the Donbas. Keep Ukraine a buffer, agree they stay out of NATO, but let them in the EU. Keep bleeding Russia until they agree.
