2 Hi, Pixy! Looks like everyone else went away...

3 Thanks for the techie stuff!

6 I have Roku teevee and a couple of sticks for the others. Don't see the problem with them.

We don't *need* tv so much. Well, hubby does...

7 I put a preset amount on a reloadable debit card, then turn it loose on Roku. Hubby can order whatever he wants until the $ run out.

Winning!

40 I plan to call in sick today (and maybe tomorrow, to make it look more serious), because . . . the car has to go to the tire shop.

In yesterday's heavy rain, coming home, I hit a pothole in the east driveway of my dump-plex. I couldn't see it for the water. Well, BANG! and BANG! as I dropped the right wheels into it. Two flat tires. One of them was the tire I just bought because I banged into a sharp curb I could not see two weeks ago!

Got to call AAA for a tow to the tire shop, and then buy two more tires. They prob. don't have Continentals in stock; didn't two weeks back. But the car can't move without a second spare, and so I can't afford to wait. It'll be far simpler to tell my boss I'm sick than to explain all this. And I need some sleep!

For me, that began in 1993; and although these were commercials first aired in 1989, I've never forgotten them (and they seem generally applicable here in response to your comment):

45 [Cut #1:] It seemed like a different era
Diner's were popular, Rock 'n Roll was in
The air was charged with the power of positive thinking
Style was in style

[Cut #2:] It was a simpler time
A time of hope, and faith, and future
Blue jeans and white tee-shirts were in

And Mazda introduced the Miata
A ragtop, a two-seater, a true roadster
Everyone seemed to be feeling pretty good

The new Mazda Miata
It not only gives you a glimpse of 1990
It takes you back as well

47 Vic, hubby is more easily entertained than some of us, LOL.

He's been watching cooking shows lately. This makes my life more difficult, due to his requests for more... exotic... meals.

Otherwise, it's fine. Keeps him out of my hair, so to speak.

He isn't confined to wheelchair, just has trouble walking sometimes. Has little stamina, uses a cane or walker depending on how far he has to go. Walker has detachable footrests that I can add when he's really tired (like if we go to big-box store) and then he can sit down while I push him along.

Got maintenance people and a plumber showing up, again, at my leaky condo to fix an issue affecting the condo below mine. Thankfully, I don't have to pay for this on. I think. I won't be getting much sleep today either.

Thanks, JQ. Yes, it's a matter of inconvenience and of money, not life-threatening or life-changing. It didn't happen in traffic or far from home, for example.

Odd, but tires (and two batteries) have been the only big expenses on the Buick since I bought it in '19. A set of tires in late '20, and then four flats (= replacements) since then. What amounts to two sets of tires in five years.

64 That Macbook Air with only 6GB in 2024 isn't quite as useless as the original 128K Mac but it raises some bad memories. 128Kat first seemed like a lot to people coming off of 8-bit systems but the GUI ate so much memory that you didn't have much more workspace than you did with an 8-bit with 64K, never mind the same system with bank switching and apps that knew how to use it.

Almost as annoying was the Tandy radio Shack answer to the Mac on some of their PCs. (Trivia: Their first MS-DOS machine, the Tandy 1000, was originally developed for Atari to be sold as the Atari 1600. It was essentially a PC Jr. in that it had the same graphics and sound hardware but a proper keyboard.) It was this awful character mapped thing called DeskMate. It had a significant memory footprint that meant games (I was at a company called Cinemaware) that really needed the full 640K wouldn't work. The 16-color mode on the Tandy 1000 made that especially probable. DESKMATE WOULD NOT GO AWAY. You could turn it off in the BIOS but not really. It only meant you booted into MS-DOS without the shell but the memory it stole was still lost. Which had a solution but a really bad one for a consumer product.

67 There were two empty sockets on the board to add 128K of RAM for a 768K system. Tandy knew this was needed because of DeskMate but it took a lot of phone calls to Ft. worth to get them to admit this. I wanted to get on a plane and find someone there to strangle. Why not just be up front about this and tout this as a feature?

To watch TV, of course. It was the best choice for enabling streaming on the cheap a few years ago for my mother and sister's rooms. The first 4K TV I bought had it built-in. The current TV is an LG with their own WebOS, which is actually a descendant of the PalmOS. It has advantages and disadvantages. Like there doesn't seem to be any way to keep the TV from defaulting to antenna input. I live in a place where OTA is a non-starter and there is never going to be an antenna connected. Just take me to the home screen for the apps.

Posted by: m at March 05, 2024 05:55 AM (o3SCB)

77 Roku is a nice alternative to "cable tv"-- plenty of free choices, then pick and choose any pay-services. It's uncomplicated (which is great for not-savvy hubby) and relatively inexpensive. Depending on channel selections, of course.

Posted by: JQ at March 05, 2024 05:57 AM (njWTi)

78 >>For that price you get 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD, neither of which can be upgraded. Apple would pay less than $10 for each of those components.

8GB on this platform is eminently usable.

The SSD is a tad small but manageable and can be augmented with an external ssd.

And being that the life expectancy of the laptop will be around a decade, you're going to get your money's worth out of it.

Almost as annoying was the Tandy radio Shack answer to the Mac on some of their PCs.

My skinflint former FiL, may God rest his soul, used Radio Shack decals to try to bluff others that his car was protected by a security system. He had used a razor blade to remove the phrase "Radio Shack" from between the top half phrase, "This Car Protected By A", and the bottom phrase, "Security System", and then brought the two halves together when he installed them on his car's windows. You could see the line between the two parts if you gave the warning labels more than a perfunctory glance. It was to laugh.

The man had issues, and no doubt about it. He passed them on to his daughter, unfortunately.

82 On the other hand . . . I made it clear to Miss Linda last night that I am *done* with this dump, and brought up the topic of relocating once I retire, possibly to Indiana. I showed her a lot of the modest houses in Evansville I've been perusing on Realtor. She had a queasy look on her face at some of them ("There are no trees!"). But! She was willing to go along with the idea of having a look at the area. She even suggested that, if I take a week off around spring break time, we could drive up together. This is 1000% better than I'd hoped.

She wants to bring the cats instead of putting them in a kennel. I dunno about that. We'd have to find hotels in B'ham and Evansville that accept pets, and it would be a strain on them. We'll see.

Try to work a bollard into your campaign's visuals. Voters just love seeing a political candidate standing tall with a substantial bollard at her side.

91 80 My skinflint former FiL, may God rest his soul, used Radio Shack decals to try to bluff others that his car was protected by a security system. He had used a razor blade to remove the phrase "Radio Shack" from between the top half phrase, "This Car Protected By A", and the bottom phrase, "Security System", and then brought the two halves together when he installed them on his car's windows.

WinTels are cheap and they are made as cheaply as possible and so consequently last half as long respectively.

My wife has gone through 5 WinTel laptops in the last decade.

I've had two MacBook Pros since 2009, the 2009 still works flawlessly but could no longer handle running VM Windows 7 and AutoCad 13, nor could I upgrade the version of Autocad on the VM nor the Windows version.

So I have a 2015 MBP that's still chugging along nicely.

188 I have a 75” 4K TV and was watching some hi resolution time lapse video of the Milky Way. I watched it for a good hour or more. After awhile the imagery popped out of me like one of the prints that turns 3D after looking at it. My brain was able to determine depth of field even those it was only a 2D image. That was confirmed when I was able to distinguish constellations among the thousands and thousands of stars I was witnessing.

There was one particular blob of light that I was interested in which at first I thought was a globular cluster. Atmospheric distortion would blur it but sometimes it would get more defined. I paused the video at one of those times and could clearly tell it was a butterfly nebula!

I went up to the TV to get a better look and sure enough that was exactly what it was. Then I started looking around the screen and to my amazement I found multiple nebulas.

Then I got to thinking, with all those stars on the screen that effectively it was like looking through a window with 100x to 1000x better eyesight.

Problem: No engagement on the Constitution. Solution: Scholarships based on the Constitution.
Our local TEA Party group incorporated as a 501 (C) 3 group, raised money for the prized money, and had an annual Constitution Bee for high school students. Over 9 years we passed out $46,000 in scholarships (for colleges and trade schools) for the top three winners at the Bee.

Our group became a holding bank for pragmatic candidates for local offices.

Today, I would aver that having a Constitution 2.0 thinking group would concentrate local thinkers. Acting for good can make a difference.

230 15. The whole spirit of the federal constitution is against ex post facto laws, or bills of attainder in form of trials by jury, and denies to the legislature power to deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.
16. A provision which at once without trial deprives a whole class of persons of offices held by them, for cause, however grave, is inconsistent with this spirit and general purpose, and therefore no such construction can be given the third clause of the fourteenth amendment.

So the 14th is not a quote unquote law.
