English children delight in sweetmeats and sugar-candy, while those of Africa prefer rock salt. A Frenchman likes frogs and snails, and some may eat eels, oysters, and whelks. To the Esquimaux, train oil is your only delicacy. 39 [WILLOWED, natch: O/T -- Speaking of movies --]

Today is the release date for the film Cabrini -- another Angel Studios production from Sound of Freedom director Alejandro Monteverde.

It's apparently a visually-stunning black-and-white biopic of the uplifting (boy can we use more of that) & true story of 5-foot tall and eventual Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini (AKA Mother Cabrini), an Italian-American Catholic nun who established the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus during the late 1800s -- founding the Columbus Hospital in 1892 (the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage).

She was the first U.S. citizen (naturalized in 1909) to be canonized a saint by the Catholic Church. She made 24 trans-Atlantic crossings and established 67 institutions: schools, hospitals, and orphanages.

Anywho, it's out in limited release -- and a big opening weekend will help keep it in -- and expand to more -- theaters; we rarely see movies in theaters anymore, but am looking forward to seeing this one this weekend.

I suspect very heavy glaciation through the end of the lower Dryas period, about 10,000 years ago, which is nearly no time at all for a mountain.

Ice and glaciation was so extensive they think that the Falklands were connected to the mainland via sea ice.

There's a subduction zone off the coast where one plate is getting crushed under the South American plate, causing uplift. So there relatively new formations. Lots of volcanic activity up and down the coast of SoAm.

91 This total solar eclipse stuff next month is turning into madness here in NE Texas. Our county just put out word they are expecting over 100,000 visitors for that weekend. Every hotel room in town is already booked and all of the spaces at both campgrounds are reserved. There are still a few day passes available at the State Park but those will go quickly in the next few days.

All of this for 3 minutes and a few seconds of eclipse. Granted it hasn't happened here since 1878 and there wont be another until 2044, but the madness is getting out of hand.

Those sharp, horn-like peaks (e.g. Matterhorn) are the results of intersecting cirques of mountain glaciers. Definitely erosion. Why so high? The uplift continues. And pre-erosion, the uplift would just be a long, broad ridge, like a wave at sea. Mountains are what's left after erosion has eaten away the in-between.

There is a little directly-precipitated dolomite rock, but it seems the greater part of it is formed by magnesium-rich waters percolating through porous limestones (calcium carbonate). When calcium carbonate is altered to dolomite, there is a volume increase, and fractures and intercrystalline porosity can result, amking a high-quality reservoir rock for the oilfield.

157 I haven't heard anyone call what we're going through a Depression, but it reminds me of biographies I've read from that time. Family expanded to include all ages and generations because that was the only way to survive. I know I help my kids more than my parents ever would have reached out to any of their kids, because they need my help to get through this. And I read this story often here.

I'm convinced that we suffered through a depression under DogEater, and now one under F. Joe Mugabe.

They clearly overtly flat-out lie in their "official" feral gubmint statistics and #FakeEconomists ... unexpectedly ... when a D is POTUS.

172 My little town opened up the parks for people to camp the night before the eclipse to avoid some of the huge amount of traffic we got the morning of.

If you're going to drive in the day of the eclipse, why would you drive into town? Wouldn't it make more sense to drive somewhere away from town?

Posted by: Oddbob at March 08, 2024 08:36 PM

My point exactly. Out VFW is talking about charging $10 to park in our parking lot that morning. I pointed out that if anyone was wanting to come to town to watch the eclipse they could just park on the side of the friggin road and not pay anyone. It's not like the Sheriff is going to go around and ticket people.

Why not offer to sell them hotdogs and beers. I think we would make more money that way. We will see. This thing is causing people to get crazy trying to think up ways to make money.

Clocks don't change here, and I'm really liking that better. Right now when I wake up, the sun is lightening the sky, but has to rise over the mountains (hills, really, this is Arizona, not Colorado), and isn't yet able to do that too early.

I expect St. Peter will kick his ass straight to hell, with no opportunity to meet the real Big Guy.

241 I've watched that too many times as I think it's "a rudimentary lathe" but I will stand corrected if necessary.

Yeah, that don't work, it just smears the sin around, like a few raindrops onto a dusty car on a hot summer day.

You gotta be dunked clear under water to really wash the sin away.

245 I have an electronic copy of the script for Galaxy Quest. I don't remember how I got it but it's a fun read with the movie scenes in mind.

246 Always think I've got every scene & word of Galaxy Quest memorized; always get something new out of it.

I have a Nissan Quest. Keep meaning to put this "Galaxy" bumper sticker over the logo.

250 Justin Long was really good in Galaxy Quest too.

He’s in one of my favorite RomComs. Going the Distance with Drew Barrymore.

252 No, families did not "expand" during the Depression and then contract to their normal function. Extended families are part of the history of clans and tribes and the rest of social history. They were always big. It was only in the last century, when outside factors like the need to staff new industrial plants and farm open country pulled them apart, that we contracted them to the easily portable Mom and Pop and Bud and Sis. Because we are very much men of our age and no other, we swim in the water without knowing it is wet. Hard enough times could return us to normal.

You are not going to like it.
