  • Are datacenters drinking all of Arizona's water? No. (MSN)

Takes a lot of scrolling, but one of Microsoft's massive datacenters uses as much water as, uh, 670 families. Say 2500 people.

Based on that, all the datacenters in the world might use 0.25% of what is used domestically, which in turn is a small fraction of what is used in agriculture and industry, or, in California, flushed straight out to sea because planning is bad.

  • Researchers have created the first AI worms. (Ars Technica)

These use "prompt engineering" to trick LLMs into violating their own rules and generate emails that can, in turn, infect other LLMs.

Everything old is new again. We went through a whole decade of this with buffer overflows; this is the same thing except a thousand times more expensive.

47 It isn't like he was testifying before congress or anything....

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told Congress on Thursday that more than 25,000 women and children had been killed by Israel in Gaza since October 7, but the Pentagon later clarified that estimate, saying the figure came from the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, not U.S. intelligence.

During a congressional hearing, Austin was asked how many Palestinian women and children had been killed by Israel and Austin replied: “It is over 25,000.”

A few hours later, Sabrina Singh, a Pentagon spokesperson, said that Austin was citing an estimate from the Gaza health ministry and was referring to total Palestinians killed, not just women and children.

“We cannot independently verify these Gaza casualty figures,” Singh said in a statement.

Oh, my back was still a little sore or cramped. Not anywhere near as much. The regular stretch session usually clears up even the worst of it.

The heck of it is, with few exceptions, I've always gone to sleep on my left side. As a kid at home, I found the light from downstairs would keep me awake if I "slept right," and it's become a habit.

Many people I know have become tired of all the tech interfaces - websites, apps, online "help" and VRUs that allow the company to never actually talk to you - they long for the days when people interacted directly. Simpler and a lot less frustrating.

I was at a Pennsylvania state park for a little recreation yesterday. The structure for men and women to relieve themselves and wash their hands has been closed down since 2020, with a 'Closed for Season' sign on it. There was a single porta potty, but it was knocked over and on its side, unusable. There were road signs pulled from the ground and tossed into the water next to the boat ramp. The parking lot was nearly unnavigable because of neglect.

An asian couple with three children arrived in a new car with a new kayak, I could not recognize the language they spoke. There is no way they all should have been in that kayak but they all fit. No lifejackets, despite them being required to be worn on the water until May iirc. Third world country stuff and I'm sick of it.

94 Whatever mechanical breaks
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Whatever mechanical fails on my 47 year old daily driver is easily repairable by the owner who has made a career of fixing these vehicles right the FIRST time.

There's a transportation module (read that wife's car) available for her driving pleasure. I simply ride in it, wanting nothing whatever to do with repair, having done enough on them as my career dictated.

If you can't find people to maintain this Pennsylvania state park then just shut it down. Put a chain across the entrance. Dynamite the dam, sell off the land.

People don't need recreation, they have cell phones and Tik-Tok to keep them amused.

98 Looks like another mass shooting in California.

4 dead, three wounded.

Perhaps the root cause can be traced back to California's lax gun laws, and strict immigration enforcement.

I figure illegals commit hundreds of crimes per year. The Fair Tx would at least bring them in as payors but more importantly keep them from getting the monthly prebate.

>>2,035 people voted in the DC primary where Haley triumphed over Trump.

Just checked DC voter registration stats

529k registered voters, 404k registered donks, 29,970k registered Reps, weirdly enough, exactly 7pct of registered Republicans voted in the primary, like exactly 7pct, which is sad and improbable.

So there is obviously some rounding going on somewhere, or the voting, even in pointless GOP races in Donk Controlled shit holes are, "fortified."

Just perusing Kia forums, it looks like there is a known issue with Kia's Throttle Position Sensor, in many of it's engines.

Looking around, the sensor ranges from 15 - 150 dollars depending on the make and model and year.

Changing the sensor is not very hard, and being the average labor cost is around 90 bucks an hour, it should cost around 125-300 price range.

That is assuming this is the problem.

122 89 The District Attorney of Maine’s most populous county will no longer charge individuals, including illegal aliens, who are caught driving without a license, driving with a suspended registration, or driving an unregistered motor vehicle.

The new policy change, which will take effect on March 1, was announced in a memo distributed this week by Cumberland County District Attorney Jacqueline A. Sartoris.

I remember the first time a 'Check Engine' light came on the dash of my Chevrolet. I pulled over, turned the car off, raised the hood and discovered the engine was still there. Got back in, started it up and drove away - having fulfilled the requirement.

128 Back in the day, Microsoft in its wisdom, worked on expanding its Office product to allow coding and automation, mostly by its VBA script but also being able to reach out from other programs using COM.

They improved upon this by extending it to their web browser. They changed the naming of this web-based COM to "ActiveX", allowing complex apps that could be embedded in a web page before HTML5 existed.

Monsters, on the other hand, decided to use them for evil and malice. Viruses, worms, trojans; Most of them weren't even to make money like the current crypto-lockers; they were just to destroy data and even hardware.

It'll be interesting to see if the likes of ChatGPT and Gemini end up dying out, simply due to digital influenza.
