Daily Tech News 33 February 2023

Top Story

  • A tale of two tales: Elon Musk sues OpenAI and Sam Altman over "betrayal" of nonprofit AI mission. (Tech Crunch)

OpenAI was founded specifically as a nonprofit, chartered with a mission to produce AI for the public good.

This was the source of the drama last year when Sam Altman was removed by the board - the board was trying to return OpenAI to something closer to its original mission. But money talked, and Altman was soon restored as chief bullshitter.

Musk's suit hinges on how much of the nonprofit's charter and statements made at the time can be held as legally binding - since he provided much of the original funding.

  • Speaking of chief bullshitters here's The Verge's terrible take on the story. (The Verge)

    That's not reporting, it's propaganda.

Tech News

  • This takes major talent. (MSN)

Home brand and budget soft drinks (as in soda/pop) and mineral water have disappeared from supermarket shelves in Australia due to - I am not making this up - a shortage of carbon dioxide.

Supplies are expected to resume by the end of the year, maybe.

  • Apropos of nothing, I just bought a SodaStream.

  • Apple is un-killing persistent web apps in the EU. (Apple Insider)

"This has nothing to do with the EU investigation," said an Apple spokesman on conditions of anonymity. "We listened to our users. Lol. Don't print that."

  • Here's an 8.8" tablet with a 2560x1600 screen, a fast CPU, 16GB of RAM, and upgradeable storage. (Hot Hardware)

Only problem is it's a chunky monkey and runs Windows and costs about three times as much as Lenovo's Android-based Legion Y700.

Only problem with the Y700 is you can't officially buy it outside China.

  • JPEG XL and the Pareto Front. (Cloudinary)

A very, very, very detailed look at recent improvements to the JPEG XL library, showing off performance improvements, resource reductions, and quality advantages over JPEG.

When you over-compress JPEG it gets blocky and ugly, but JPEG XL just gets overly smooth.

Not At All Tech News

  • Vtuber agency Prism Project is ending. (Twitter)

I've been watching Prism since 2021; it's been my second favourite agency, though it has never made huge numbers. Sony Music acquired the company in 2022, and launched three new generations of talents last year, but it looks like it's fallen victim to cost-cutting by the corporate parent.

But in a masterclass of how to do things right, Sony is transferring all rights to the character models, existing content, and online accounts to the individual talents, so they can all continue as independent channels.

It's a stark contrast to Nijisanji, which bullied Selen Tatsuki into a suicide attempt, seized control of her online accounts while she was hospitalised, fired her, defamed her, and deleted three years of content.

That usually happens in Communist countries like Chicago and California. I figured Austraila would be a little better.

When watching the older movies, I would marvel at the (usually) guy walking into the room and making a drink with one of those and the ice bucket always had ice in it.

Didn't matter if it was a rich person with staff, or the private dick with his office in the seedy part of town.

39 From the 20 Tweets from Bad Blue, the WSJ article comparing Covid to the flu is--unnecessarily-- pretty confusing:

It’s Official: We Can Pretty Much Treat Covid Like the Flu Now. Here’s a Guide.

However, public health officials cautioned that Covid still isn’t the same as the flu or other respiratory viruses. “Let’s be clear. Covid-19 is not the flu,”

53 I don’t understand how Pennsylvania remains the state. Carville said Pennsylvania was Pittsburgh and Philadelphia on both coasts and Alabama in the middle. He’s a jag off, but that was the one line he said that was completely true.

Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are corrupt and they will definitely cheat. There’s no question there that’s what they do particularly Philadelphia. The rest of the state is made up of normals. Since the Trump victory 2016, they have taken a tremendous beat down. I am surprised they put up with it as well. And I’m not saying that’s a good thing.

I know everyone says their state is red if you take out the cities but I’ve been to a lot of states and a lot of cities in the Pennsylvania situation is different. Sure Virginia is red if you take out the swamp. But Pennsylvania is deep red and 1/10 of their state controls everything. Something has to give there. I hope it is a Republican victory, but I have reasons for requesting that.

56 55, I hear you Virginia is weird as well, it is also commonwealth. A read the other day that there are something like 19or maybe 29 independent cities in this country, and either 17 or 27 are in Virginia. Yes I had there and yes I could’ve booked it up but I hate looking things up when chatting, I would rather be wrong than be accused of looking things up. But basically all the independent cities are in Virginia, except for one or two

I know one of the cities outside of Virginia is Carson City, Nevada.

67 Hi y'all!

Yes, VA has a lot of independent cities Many are coextensive with old counties: VA Beach was Princess Anne; Suffolk was Nanesmond. Poquoson seceded from York County to be whiter after integration.

What I don't get are the NYC counties. Why is there a New York County (Manhattan), a Richmond County (Staten Island), etc., when there is already a borough government and the city government on top of that? Seems redundant and wasteful.

71 So I looked it up just for argument sake. Of the 41 independent cities in the United States 38 are in Virginia. as a libertarian conservative, I don’t give a damn about the meaning of various authorities, certainly not the nuances. But in my understanding, it basically means the city is on its own and is not part of a county or Parish. The irony is in most cases the county government buildings courthouse is etc. are located in those cities, often right next to the city court, buildings, etc.

73 69, there are people in California and other lefty states asking for 20 or 30 bucks. I know full well why minimum wages don’t work, but I also see on a daily basis how poorly low income people often work. As a philosophical argument, I think minimum wages are stupid, on the other hand, a $15 minimum wage might make some business owners start being a bit more particular about whom they hire. Again, I’m not for government enforced mandates. They are always wrong, and they always fail.

In my corner of Pennsylvania, we have Wawa stores which are a combination of fast food, gasoline, and now some re-charging stations for battery powered cars. Very active, high traffic locations. Their minimum wage appears to already be above $15.00 an hour.

Posted by: Divide by Zero at March 02, 2024 06:05 AM (RKVpM)

77 When I was a freshman in college I lived across the street from a WaWa and consumed many of their 50 cent roller dogs.

Posted by: San Franpsycho at March 02, 2024 06:08 AM (RIvkX)

78 76, in my area we have sheets at Wawa. People fight about the differences, but to be honest, they’re basically the same. They are offering people $18 an hour to work for them. The reason is simple and unfortunately, this is true in red states as well, but people are nuts.

Sure is not everywhere and we all hope there’s a place we can go where people are good. But the reality is people that work in places like Wawa have to deal with a lot of crap on a daily basis. There are much easier jobs out there basically jobs where you don’t have to deal with people.

Posted by: Quint at March 02, 2024 06:08 AM (LX56V)

79 Just anecdotally, Wawa seems to have good employee retention. I'm on the road a lot for service work, and all the usual ones i go to its actually noticeable when they get a new employee in. Very little churn. They must pay their people well and treat them well.

C02 makes water acidic, you're making carbonic acid when you inject CO2 into water (knowledge from years brewing beer).
If you want to 'sweeten' beer you let the CO2 outgas. I used to pour beer between 2 glasses if a place had their CO2 psi set to high in their beer serving lines. Yeah, the looks I got were quite strange...

83 The first day I moved to the country I met this girl and she said to me that she wish she still lived in Texas, where people were nice. In my head I went. “Oh shit”, because I thought I just moved to where people were nice.

The reality is, I did move to a better place, you have a much higher percentage of kind people. But the crappy people are here and they are not a small percentage. That sucks. The Wawa employees have to be top-notch, willing to keep their nose to the grindstone all day long. They're worth the money. Some people simply do not have the brain capacity or the ability to stay focused through an eight hour shift. That's why you need to have a minimum wage that's pretty pathetic.

Employers will pay good employees more to retain them if they're making a profit. I'd hate to have to employ a graduate of the Philadelphia public school system at $15.00 an hour - much less a dropout.

Doing that "look around at the people in line trying to garner sympathy" thing as he rants and cusses, but we all just shook our heads at him in contempt. He finally flounces, second guy is up, his little rewards bar code thing on his phone won't scan first try. I say "Hey, try being a dick about it, I've heard that works."

Everybody laughs.

90 Evening and morning to all the folken on a Saturday morning (as it is here)! 'Tis foggy, 58 F., almost no wind (or there would be no fog, right?). Prob. too damp to wash the car until later today.

99 93, there was a restaurant in London called the Texas Embassy in the 90s. My buddy and I went there and it was a lot of fun. Sure the TexMex food sucked but what can you expect, it sucks in most locals in the US and the people there have no idea.

The cool thing about that restaurant is, it was located about a block from the actual Texas Embassy that was established after Texas became a nation well before it became part of the United States. Texas had an embassy in Paris as well.

I went to the best Tex-Mex restaurant in Paris one time and it was pretty good. One thing Americans don’t understand about the French is they love trying food from mother places. Neither tex max place was that good though the French one was probably better but the London one has a crazy good locale. I heard the Texas Embassy London closed a few years back and that’s a shame. It was a really cool place.

107 100, I went to London, 7 or eight times in the 90s. Hell I lived there at one point. It was a diversity then, but somehow it worked.

I would’ve guessed they would go the other way then will America just to differentiate themselves. I guess not. They are just as bad, if not worse, but I will not say they’re worse because we are in real trouble.

I am happy I traveled Europe when I did in the 90s because I legitimately have no interest in it today. They are just as messed up as we are and we have to fix what we have going on here today.

Wawa is efficient as well even at high volume.

I’ve done 3500 deliveries in the last year and by far the restaurant that does it the best is McDonald’s. I would’ve never guessed that. we don’t have Wawa here but we have sheets. It is hit and miss. There is so much theft going on with drivers and other people that the system doesn’t work very well.

I moved to the country and thought it would be better and it is better, but it is not good enough. Thievery is rampant here and that is a damn shame.

Pennsylvania is filled with bizarre and inexplicable people and while control of Philly, Pittsburgh and other high population, high density areas explains the control in statewide offices, it does not fully explain how the GOP only has a bare majority in the 50 seat senate and are in the minority in the 203 seat house.

Morning, Ben Had,

For a liquid wax, the kind you have to scrub off and buff to a gloss, I've been using Collinite No. 845 once or twice a year. That I do after a claying and maybe a polish. For every week, after I've rinsed off the car, the Wax-as-U-Dry spray stuff? Either Meguiar's, Turtle Wax (though everybody seems to have gone to the ceramic $$$ stuff now), or currently Griot's Garage Spray-On Wax.

I also love Italy. I studied the place in college, and I love the cities in small towns I’ve been to. But I’m gonna tell you by far Paris is my favorite city in Europe, and it really isn’t close. Of course it’s not a perfect city as there are no perfect cities, but it is a beautiful city. Washington DC is a beautiful city at least that is how it was designed, it was based on Paris. London and Rome are ugly cities, although there are amazing things there. Paris is a beautiful city even though I know it has tons of problems. I’ve gone back there a few times just to check to see if I was right in my original opinion and I was in my opinion.

144 Log Prof I think sometimes they forget that we are on the same team. Same with Uber Eats and DoorDash customer service which we both know is somewhere in Indo China.. although that customer service hit and miss because I’ve had some really good ones many a time.

We should talk sometime I would gladly chat with you and that’s not my normal mode as I’ve been here for countless years and pretty much no one knows me lol. But what I like about McDonald’s is they seem to do it quickly and they put the drinks along with the food and the bag they just seem to have the online ordering thing down unlike other places.

If you wanna make good tips, go with Chinese places and go with Uber eats and not DoorDash. Both apps have their problems but with Uber Eats at least you have a good chance of having an increased tip and that is something that happens a lot. Increase tips with DoorDash are rare and they’re usually a buck or two at most. I’ve had increased tips with Uber eats that are 20 bucks or more countless times, buon cast Mercy Give crepe Then Give a crap.

165 140, I hear you for sure is a divided state that was my point. I am telling in the parts of central Pennsylvania I have been I have never seen any place that is so pro Trump and has been since 2016. They just do it differently. I wish I took pictures, but I can’t tell you how many signs I saw that were put up with heavy wood and hard nail steel nails. These people were not joking around..

Can offset Philly, Pittsburgh and College towns? Maybe not but I do know these people were not meant to live together. That was my point.

There is a reason Trump has always made a special plea to Pennsylvania. He wants that state more than anyone. He also thinks he can win Virginia, which is probably probably not likely, he recalls of Virginia, that no longer exists, but to be honest with you he wants Virginia and PA more than any other two states and he said that so many times since the first go around anyone should notice it.

They don’t teach any history so they continue to not teach any history with women or anyone else. When people talk about people these days, you have to wonder who were their parents? That makes the generational issue a bit more complicated.

207 201, my parents had every volume of that work so they never pushed it on me. They never pushed anything on me.

I grew up in northern Virginia and what they call the swamp today and back in the 80s even the liberals then cared about America and away for sure their own kind did not today. I fell in love with history with fourth grade Virginia history and you might think it’s funny because it was fourth grade but they took it very seriously and I made a A and I was very proud of that.

I had one teacher that told me he had a confederate flag on his wall, again this was the 80s and I’m not sure exactly what he meant by that but just saying, I love Virginia history and no one‘s going to put me down.

In high school, we were supposed to write a story with a lot of adjectives, describing various things, but there were no other rules. I wrote about the assassination of Daniel Ortega. I got an a on that report, and that was again in the deep swamp of Northern Virginia. Daniel Ortega is still in charge of Nicaragua which is crazy to me but I only wrote it because it was something in the news in the 80s. I probably shouldn’t mention it but who gives a damn who cares what I write.

209 But that was in the deep state of Northern Virginia, and I got an A. It just shows how far we have fallen. It just shows how far things have gone. What I just mentioned was a tiny slice of life in a Democrat run area of this country. I am sure people would go off and think what I did was weird and attack me but back then it was just a guy, a student expressing himself. I look back at it and think what has become of us. What do we know allow as normal?

Posted by: Quint at March 02, 2024 07:58 AM (LX56V)

210 By the way, I’m not pro confederate, this is not the 1980s or 90s. But we have people destroying history, and destroying the received history of an entire region of the country. The reality is they won on that point we as in regular people they want to keep our history known, we just gave up. let’s be honest we just gave up.

Posted by: Quint at March 02, 2024 08:00 AM (LX56V)

211 over the past 80 years, as a far greater proportion of North Americans attended college, the average IQ of college undergraduates dropped from around 120 to 102, just slightly above the average of 100.

But the paper which states that was rejected because people on Reddit and X didn't like the tone.

You have to keep telling middling intelligence college students that they are is college because they are super smart and good at everything. Then you have to give them positions of power, especially if they meet DEI goals, because they are super smart and good at everything. And when it all goes to shit, we are to blame, not them, because they are in charge.

The English major was created in the 1870's to pick up the leftovers of Classics, Philology, Grammar and Rhetoric after the great shift to the new Great Books ("in translation") program. There's a good chance we'd understand this process better if we actually paid attention to the history of education while we are spitting.
