Home brand and budget soft drinks (as in soda/pop) and mineral water have disappeared from supermarket shelves in Australia due to - I am not making this up - a shortage of carbon dioxide.

I don’t understand how Pennsylvania remains the state. Carville said Pennsylvania was Pittsburgh and Philadelphia on both coasts and Alabama in the middle. He’s a jag off, but that was the one line he said that was completely true.
Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are corrupt and they will definitely cheat. There’s no question there that’s what they do particularly Philadelphia. The rest of the state is made up of normals. Since the Trump victory 2016, they have taken a tremendous beat down. I am surprised they put up with it as well. And I’m not saying that’s a good thing. I know everyone says their state is red if you take out the cities but I’ve been to a lot of states and a lot of cities in the Pennsylvania situation is different. Sure Virginia is red if you take out the swamp. But Pennsylvania is deep red and 1/10 of their state controls everything. Something has to give there. I hope it is a Republican victory, but I have reasons for requesting that. Posted by: Quint at March 02, 2024 05:33 AM (LX56V) 54

55, I hear you Virginia is weird as well, it is also commonwealth. A read the other day that there are something like 19or maybe 29 independent cities in this country, and either 17 or 27 are in Virginia. Yes I had there and yes I could’ve booked it up but I hate looking things up when chatting, I would rather be wrong than be accused of looking things up. But basically all the independent cities are in Virginia, except for one or two

Hi y'all!
Yes, VA has a lot of independent cities Many are coextensive with old counties: VA Beach was Princess Anne; Suffolk was Nanesmond. Poquoson seceded from York County to be whiter after integration. What I don't get are the NYC counties. Why is there a New York County (Manhattan), a Richmond County (Staten Island), etc., when there is already a borough government and the city government on top of that? Seems redundant and wasteful. So I looked it up just for argument sake. Of the 41 independent cities in the United States 38 are in Virginia. as a libertarian conservative, I don’t give a damn about the meaning of various authorities, certainly not the nuances. But in my understanding, it basically means the city is on its own and is not part of a county or Parish. The irony is in most cases the county government buildings courthouse is etc. are located in those cities, often right next to the city court, buildings, etc.

69, there are people in California and other lefty states asking for 20 or 30 bucks. I know full well why minimum wages don’t work, but I also see on a daily basis how poorly low income people often work. As a philosophical argument, I think minimum wages are stupid, on the other hand, a $15 minimum wage might make some business owners start being a bit more particular about whom they hire. Again, I’m not for government enforced mandates. They are always wrong, and they always fail.

76, in my area we have sheets at Wawa. People fight about the differences, but to be honest, they’re basically the same. They are offering people $18 an hour to work for them. The reason is simple and unfortunately, this is true in red states as well, but people are nuts.
Sure is not everywhere and we all hope there’s a place we can go where people are good. But the reality is people that work in places like Wawa have to deal with a lot of crap on a daily basis. There are much easier jobs out there basically jobs where you don’t have to deal with people. Posted by: Quint at March 02, 2024 06:08 AM (LX56V) 79

The Wawa employees have to be top-notch, willing to keep their nose to the grindstone all day long. They're worth the money. Some people simply do not have the brain capacity or the ability to stay focused through an eight hour shift. That's why you need to have a minimum wage that's pretty pathetic. Employers will pay good employees more to retain them if they're making a profit. I'd hate to have to employ a graduate of the Philadelphia public school system at $15.00 an hour - much less a dropout. Posted by: Divide by Zero at March 02, 2024 06:18 AM (RKVpM) 87

93, there was a restaurant in London called the Texas Embassy in the 90s. My buddy and I went there and it was a lot of fun. Sure the TexMex food sucked but what can you expect, it sucks in most locals in the US and the people there have no idea.
The cool thing about that restaurant is, it was located about a block from the actual Texas Embassy that was established after Texas became a nation well before it became part of the United States. Texas had an embassy in Paris as well. I went to the best Tex-Mex restaurant in Paris one time and it was pretty good. One thing Americans don’t understand about the French is they love trying food from mother places. Neither tex max place was that good though the French one was probably better but the London one has a crazy good locale. I heard the Texas Embassy London closed a few years back and that’s a shame. It was a really cool place. Posted by: Quint at March 02, 2024 06:33 AM (LX56V) 100

100, I went to London, 7 or eight times in the 90s. Hell I lived there at one point. It was a diversity then, but somehow it worked.
I would’ve guessed they would go the other way then will America just to differentiate themselves. I guess not. They are just as bad, if not worse, but I will not say they’re worse because we are in real trouble. I am happy I traveled Europe when I did in the 90s because I legitimately have no interest in it today. They are just as messed up as we are and we have to fix what we have going on here today. Good customer service via treating your good employees humanely? Say it ain't so!
I've done doordash and I can see the difference between a well run store and one that's not. Only twice have I had a serious delay at Chick-fil-A: one was waiting for a new batch of the minis (apparently very popular), and the other because of changeover from breakfast. Wawa is efficient as well even at high volume. Trivium: Wawa is from a local Indian (to Pa) for 🦢, hence the logo. Posted by: logprof at March 02, 2024 06:42 AM (xrGQs) 109

108, logprof, we should chat sometime as I am one of the top door Dashers and Uber eats drivers. I never delivered a pizza or anything else before my 54th birthday, it is all new for me. But I am one of the best drivers they have, and somebody life at that but I don’t.
I’ve done 3500 deliveries in the last year and by far the restaurant that does it the best is McDonald’s. I would’ve never guessed that. we don’t have Wawa here but we have sheets. It is hit and miss. There is so much theft going on with drivers and other people that the system doesn’t work very well. I moved to the country and thought it would be better and it is better, but it is not good enough. Thievery is rampant here and that is a damn shame. 113, I am not opposing you just to oppose you far from it. I have traveled all of Western Europe and my intention was to think London was the best. I spent a lot of time in London at least six or seven months, I still love that town at least the town that existed in the 90s and early 2000s.
I also love Italy. I studied the place in college, and I love the cities in small towns I’ve been to. But I’m gonna tell you by far Paris is my favorite city in Europe, and it really isn’t close. Of course it’s not a perfect city as there are no perfect cities, but it is a beautiful city. Washington DC is a beautiful city at least that is how it was designed, it was based on Paris. London and Rome are ugly cities, although there are amazing things there. Paris is a beautiful city even though I know it has tons of problems. I’ve gone back there a few times just to check to see if I was right in my original opinion and I was in my opinion. Posted by: Quint at March 02, 2024 06:51 AM (LX56V) 119

We should talk sometime I would gladly chat with you and that’s not my normal mode as I’ve been here for countless years and pretty much no one knows me lol. But what I like about McDonald’s is they seem to do it quickly and they put the drinks along with the food and the bag they just seem to have the online ordering thing down unlike other places. If you wanna make good tips, go with Chinese places and go with Uber eats and not DoorDash. Both apps have their problems but with Uber Eats at least you have a good chance of having an increased tip and that is something that happens a lot. Increase tips with DoorDash are rare and they’re usually a buck or two at most. I’ve had increased tips with Uber eats that are 20 bucks or more countless times, buon cast Mercy Give crepe Then Give a crap. Posted by: Quint at March 02, 2024 07:13 AM (LX56V) 145

New York's attorney general sent a cease-and-desist letter on Friday slamming a Long Island lawmaker for issuing a "discriminatory and transphobic" executive order designed to keep transgender athletes from playing sports.
Attorney General Letitia James ordered Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman to "immediately rescind" his order on the basis it discriminates against people based sex, gender, identity of expression -- a violation of New York law. Posted by: rhennigantx at March 02, 2024 07:42 AM (ENQN6) 184
We got a kid who is actually pretty great. You set him off to do something and he'll do it exactly as you say... unless there's one minor slip up in his comprehension of what you asked for, and then he'll do that one minor slip up thirty dang times exactly the same every time.
He's got the fastidiousness. He's definitely got the work ethic. He just needs a bit of patience and experience. Posted by: Warai-otoko at March 02, 2024 07:42 AM (9UlRk) 185

176, I always love Steve Garvey. I’m a Texan and proud of it but as a military Brat we moved around. I remember the LA Dodgers of the late 70s and guys like Steve Garvey or heroes. I could name off 10 of them though I am Mastros fan. We should all get behind Garvey and I hope his popularity in the state helps because that is one screwed up state and anyone who tells you it was better back in the day they were wrong. It is always been a basket case.

All the history months are lefty crap. The vast majority of Young and old don’t know American history or western civilization. When I went to college, we took western civilization, one and two. My guess is today even saying those words is some type of hate crime.
I love that in my college if you were an English major, you had to take the history of England one and two. I doubt many colleges do that today and this was back in the 90s. It wasn’t that long ago people were normal. Posted by: Quint at March 02, 2024 07:46 AM (LX56V) 193

Beware the Ides of March. I know that because that was my mother‘s birthday. But I think it is women’s history, which somehow is different than regular history. Not sure why but hey. They don’t teach any history so they continue to not teach any history with women or anyone else. When people talk about people these days, you have to wonder who were their parents? That makes the generational issue a bit more complicated.

201, my parents had every volume of that work so they never pushed it on me. They never pushed anything on me.
I grew up in northern Virginia and what they call the swamp today and back in the 80s even the liberals then cared about America and away for sure their own kind did not today. I fell in love with history with fourth grade Virginia history and you might think it’s funny because it was fourth grade but they took it very seriously and I made a A and I was very proud of that. I had one teacher that told me he had a confederate flag on his wall, again this was the 80s and I’m not sure exactly what he meant by that but just saying, I love Virginia history and no one‘s going to put me down. In high school, we were supposed to write a story with a lot of adjectives, describing various things, but there were no other rules. I wrote about the assassination of Daniel Ortega. I got an a on that report, and that was again in the deep swamp of Northern Virginia. Daniel Ortega is still in charge of Nicaragua which is crazy to me but I only wrote it because it was something in the news in the 80s. I probably shouldn’t mention it but who gives a damn who cares what I write. Posted by: Quint at March 02, 2024 07:56 AM (LX56V) 208

But that was in the deep state of Northern Virginia, and I got an A. It just shows how far we have fallen. It just shows how far things have gone. What I just mentioned was a tiny slice of life in a Democrat run area of this country. I am sure people would go off and think what I did was weird and attack me but back then it was just a guy, a student expressing himself. I look back at it and think what has become of us. What do we know allow as normal?
Posted by: Quint at March 02, 2024 07:58 AM (LX56V) 210
By the way, I’m not pro confederate, this is not the 1980s or 90s. But we have people destroying history, and destroying the received history of an entire region of the country. The reality is they won on that point we as in regular people they want to keep our history known, we just gave up. let’s be honest we just gave up.

over the past 80 years, as a far greater proportion of North Americans attended college, the average IQ of college undergraduates dropped from around 120 to 102, just slightly above the average of 100.
But the paper which states that was rejected because people on Reddit and X didn't like the tone. You have to keep telling middling intelligence college students that they are is college because they are super smart and good at everything. Then you have to give them positions of power, especially if they meet DEI goals, because they are super smart and good at everything. And when it all goes to shit, we are to blame, not them, because they are in charge. Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at March 02, 2024 08:01 AM (N3GIM) 212

I am not sure English majors even study the English language anymore.
The English major was created in the 1870's to pick up the leftovers of Classics, Philology, Grammar and Rhetoric after the great shift to the new Great Books ("in translation") program. There's a good chance we'd understand this process better if we actually paid attention to the history of education while we are spitting. You're in for a shock when you take Business Administration.
