First-World Problems...

gascan5.jpg

I have several five-gallon gas cans, because I learned my lesson that fuel supplies are not exactly robust when the entire power grid is down. "Super-Storm Sandy" (what a stupid name!) was bad enough, but an unnamed Nor'easter many years ago knocked out power for 10 days, and fuel for my generator was problematic.

But our brilliant government, in its infinite wisdom, mandated those stupid valves on new gas cans that do nothing but guarantee a huge amount of spilled fuel. So I took a pair of pliers and went to town...ripping out the valves and leaving the solid nozzles...which also sucked, but such is life.

But I got sick of spilling even a little bit of fuel, so I replaced the solid nozzles with cheapo flexible ones that work great!

gascan6.jpg

Oh...do you see the tire valve that I installed? That's because the government doesn't think that these cans needed an air vent other than the useless one in the complicated valve, which is now gone!

Maybe this isn't exactly a First-World Problem. Maybe this is an expression of my growing disgust with government and its inability to do anything correctly.

Yeah...I'm going to make another cup of coffee.

Guess I could get rid of a lot the junk taking up storage space, but that stuff is there, theoretically, to furnish the house that will be coming.

The second reason is... I'm not sure I want to survive the coming apocalypse. Let the reavers and their victims fight it out.

The common denominator with low flush toilets and high efficient washers is the chemicals we use.

Think about it, you have to clean your toilets with chemicals more often, and the detergents we put in our washers, both clothes and dishes, are more complex substances than just soap.

So... let's introduce the Big Chemical Cleaner Industrial Complex into the family of conspiracy theories. More chemicals in our waste water, more chemicals on our bodies and dishes...

Leading to... what.

Remember Al Gore's 1999 canoe trip? He was there to give a $100,000 grant to the Connecticut River Commission. He needs a photo op in a canoe on the river! But the river is too low to canoe on because of a drought. So they release four billion gallons from a reservoir to get the river up to canoeing depth. Just for the day.

In 1999, toilets were limited to 1.6 gallons per flush, because of a 1992 Clinton/Gore law. "Gore wasted 2.5 billion toilet flushes worth, or 2,110 flushes for each of New Hampshire's 1.19 million residents," for that photo op.

And that was $7,100,000 worth of water at the time, so the $100,000 "federal grant" left the Commission 7 million dollars in the hole.

hypocrisy /hĭ-pŏk′rĭ-sē/
noun
1. The practice of professing beliefs, feelings, or virtues that one does not hold or possess; falseness.
2. An act or instance of such falseness.
3. The act or practice of a hypocrite; a feigning to be what one is not, or to feel what one does not feel; a dissimulation, or a concealment of one's real character, disposition, or motives; especially, the assuming of false appearance of virtue or religion; a simulation of goodness.

100 Pro tip from someone with hundreds of gallons worth of gas containers who uses them regularly:

The "water spouts" for Rotopax offroad fuel containers are actually non-CARB self venting gas spouts sold outside the US. They fit on most Scepter brand products and work like the old-school metal NATO gas can spouts.

You can be cheap and get Scepter branded regular suburban-lawnmower style gas cans and install these spouts on them. The only caveat here is that Rotopax and NATO cans are designed to handle temp swings fully sealed; the consumer cans may not handle it quite as gracefully.

For serious use, I highly recommend Wavian steel gas cans. They have a self-healing epoxy lining and will last a lonnnnng time as long as you aren't storing them on damp concrete and letting them get lots of exterior rust. If you get them, get the larger metal pour nozzle, not the BS that comes with them. The 2.5 gallon size is great for everyday use, and the 5 gal/20L ones are great for rotating through gas. I have kept gas for automotive and generator use for 3+ years with Pri-G or Sta-bil just fine. If you go this route, by extra seals for later on down the line.

Orwell characterized it perfectly, with the 2+2=5 equation.

It's not about what is true, it's not even about what you do or don't believe is true. It's about making you SAY you believe it's true, because the consequence of not going along was too painful. They control your mind, by making sure you are only ever able to say/do what they tell you to. What you actually believe is entirely irrelevant.

My First World Problem was I went to a Pennsylvania State Park today and watched as a person with their family in a brand new car and brand new kayak ignored all the signs in English advising them to wear life preservers when out on the water this time of year. They also ignored the plate securely installed on the kayak advising them of the capacity of that kayak in pounds English - which they definitely overloaded with five people. They did not end up killing anyone but came close. It's time we did something about not advising people in every language under the sun about everything.

Truth be told; I don't know if they were Korean (North or South), or Japanese (doubtful), or Chinese. But nothing remotely close to English. Gettin' so fvckin' tired of this shit.

So, somehow I have to remove that also and replace it without tearing up the drywall or cabinets. There must have been a sale on drywall screws when the original installer put it in as there are about a dozen of them connecting the elbow to the rectangular duct. Hopefully, my oscillating tool can cut them off without too much trouble.

205 "Jerry" cans were originally designed to be water cans.
The Brits had trouble getting them, too -- because they were made by The Jerries. They had to capture them.

Mine are all WWII or Korea vintage. I have never seen one that does not dribble a little when you tip it up. There is a little vent hole drilled right in the spout ferrule, so, guaranteed. For the tractor, whose 'new' plastic hood would probably discolor after years of diesel spills on it, I use what was once a transmission drain funnel and can hold a gallon of drippage. Before you malcontent sons of bitches spent your whole day bitching about your washing machine and toilet, you bitched about jerry cans dribbling. You just can't remember.
