There's an interesting clash of images happening here. The house is very modest, not upper-class or well-off. The man looks like he just came home and is warming himself over a meager fire. Why the hell didn't I know about this artist before? He is superb. His subtle, appropriate use of color, the poses of the figures, his use of realistic-ish detail in the objects and facial expressions are impressive. Then he combines them to create an emotional response in the viewer. In this painting it is the delight of the woman in her new hat (the white veil really stands out in the dark room) while the man is just waiting, probably endlessly to him, trying to get warm by the inadequate hearth fire. Any guy who has sat for what feels like an eternity, holding madam's purse, while she looks at the nine hundredth outfit, can appreciate the man's attitude. Interesting how that hasn't changed in over 150 years.
The humor is delightful. A very effective painting. BTW, look up some of Johnson's other works on Wiki. They are varied for subjects and mediums put manage to always convey what the artist wants. And not just the oil paintings. His chalk and pastel portraits are wonderful. Posted by: JTB at March 01, 2024 09:46 AM (zudum) 102

Meanwhile, the woman is showing off her pretty, new hat. The man looks sad and tired. The woman looks happy, almost oblivious. He works, she spends? That's what I'm seeing.

Apparently, the new re-designed Toyota Tacoma is a piece O shite.
The TFL off-road guys broke the FWD transfer case on their TRD Off-Road Tacoma by driving, get this, Off-Road over a patch of ice. Toyota also "redesigned" the sub frame by making it lighter, ie, cheaper and simply welded a little additional steel to some of the higher stress points. So that's going to break. Also, the 4 cylinder turbo charged engine delivering a whopping 278 horsepower while delivering a grand total of 1MPG in gas savings over the previous 6 cylinder, is gutless and sounds like a cat being strangled and is overall, too high strung, which is going to lead to longevity issues. Allegedly, the new 4 runner is going to be based on this platform, so it looks like Toyota reliability is being sacrificed to the EPA/CARB gods. Democrats' 'Shrinkflation' Bill Would Crack Down On Practice At Grocery Stores. Lawmakers want to make it an unfair trade practice when companies shrink food and household products but keep the price the same.
Sen. Bob Casey (Pa.) and other lawmakers say they now want to target the practice through the Federal Trade Commission, the independent agency that enforces civil antitrust law. The legislation would direct the FTC to develop regulations classifying shrinkflation as an unfair or deceptive trade practice. It would also give the FTC and state attorneys general the green light to pursue civil actions and fines against companies that engage in it. “Corporations are trying to pull the wool over our eyes by shrinking their products without reducing their prices — anyone on a tight budget sees it every time they go to the grocery store,” Casey said. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a co-sponsor of the bill, said the legislation would ensure shoppers “get every ounce they pay for.” The initial packaging should be required to have a period of time where it boldly says NEW PACKAGING WITH 5 OUNCES LESS PRODUCT.

The idea that Mitch is super concerned about the makeup of the courts is completely overridden by the fact that he has directed absolutely no opposition to Biden's picks, managed no serious opposition to Obama's picks, and Republicans have regularly passed more Democrat nominees onto the courts at higher rates than Democrats ever did.
Joe Mannix did a post about this last year. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, raging against the bourgeois with Pasolini at March 01, 2024 10:32 AM (GBKbO) Seems to me the life of a Senatron goes through several phases. He/she starts out full of vim and vigor, wants to make a difference. Then starts to get power, and works on making the connections that allow him/her to move up the chain. Then starts taking out rivals to that power chain, to move up, and prevent being moved down. Mitch is in the phase, where his brain is jelly, and he only exists as a puppet, a shell, and his staff keeps the corpse moving, while trying to hold onto the power that is slipping through their grips.
