Tech News

  • Self-service gas pumps failed across New Zealand because, uh, it was February 29. (Ars Technica)

This has never happened before in the history of last week.

At least we have New Zealand to give engineers in the rest of the world a couple of hours' notice that they've written some really stupid code.

  • Intel has rebranded Altera as Altera. (Serve the Home)

Intel bought FPGA maker Altera in 2015, renamed it the Intel Programmable Solutions Group, and then basically forgot it existed.

Which is what you tend to do when you spend nearly $17 billion on something.

    I guess.

  • No HDMI 2.1 for you. (Tom's Hardware)

AMD offered an open-source HDMI driver for Linux, supporting all the advanced features of HDMI 2.1, for free.

    The HDMI Forum said no.

AMD said, well everyone should just use DisplayPort then.

  • Rockstar Games has told workers to return to work. (Bloomberg)

This is a real article on a real website.

  • Socialism is bad. (The Verge)

I'm not sure The Verge intended to write a 2000-word diatribe against socialism, but it did.

  • 112 falsehoods programmers believe about time. (GitHub)

Some of these are obvious. Some of them are obvious when you think about it a bit.

And some of them are not at all obvious, and if you look up the details behind them you find some epic tale about the war between King Walter IV of Karelia and the Ruthenian Orthodox Church that led to the calendar being changed five times in four years, or the time zone in Siberia that has no permanent residents but goes in and out of daylight savings time every three and a half weeks.

Handling real-world time is like handling Unicode: It's much easier for everyone if you just pretend it doesn't exist.

  • Reddit "should" IPO at a valuation of $5 billion LOL. (Tech Crunch)

I received an invitation to buy shares in Reddit before the IPO, since I've been on every social network in the world basically forever except for Twitter which kept banning my account when it was being held hostage by commies. (YouTube only banned me once, the day they first turned the ContentID system on. Thanks very much, Sony Music.)

    Anyway: Yeah, nah.

Disclaimer: Double plus nah, in fact.

8 Evening and morning to all the satellites in space and reporting back from the orbit of Neptune! (Oh, yeah, that would mean quite the light-speed lag, more than 8 hours for a message to go out and be answered.) 'Tis raining here, but on the other hand, it's Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished!

The Killer Kittens From Outer Space are here and doing their difficult job of napping and being good-looking simultaneously. Both are curled in different favorite spots on the floor not far from me.

Time for me to stretch and do my calisthenics, since I can't go out.

As I anticipated wind storm Wednesday night caused massive tree to tumble and took out power for 14 hours. No matter how often the tree people work in this area it always happens.

Some tree rot that originated in China seems to be the culprit. The tree can look perfectly healthy but the roots rot until :: BANG :: over it goes.

23 I passed through Onion Square Tuesday to go to 450 Sutter (dentist appt). Lots of empty store fronts, not much vehicle or foot traffic, didn't see any homeless, and the only drugs i saw were at Stiiizy (pot). (Well, the asiago cheese pretzel i had could be called a drug it was so good.) If you venture a bit west then you're in the TL which is bad.

24 I have and older Epson 400 which has lasted for a long time like 8 years, and has been trouble free. I order ink from Amazon (Amazon brand?). The printer of course objects to using an ink that they don't sell, but you can overcome that. The ink from Amazon doesn't dry out like some off brands do. (for a reasonable time) and lasts for a long time.

Sad! One of my fondest memories was scoring an interview at HP headquarters in Palo Alto during my senior year at Stanford in '85 (before earning a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

[Wasn't hired, but was extremely impressed that their policy at the time was that -- among those in the chain of numerous interviews conducted by increasingly higher-positioned managerial staff -- EVERY interviewee (at least from Stanford) ended their day with a 10-minute interview with Bill Hewlitt. To say that I was in awe ...]

Anywho, HP printers back then were the standard against which all other printers were measured -- and before pesky "standards," "measurements," and "excellence" became social construct tools of the racist white cisheteropatriarchal oppressor ...

32 Had to reset my ancient (1971 vintage) Rolex Date watch ahead last night to 31 and have it read 1 today. My other everyday watch is a Steinhart GMT with the quickset date feature. But the same position of the stem governs both the GMT hand and the date -- GMT when you turn it clockwise, date when you go counterclockwise. I can never remember which is which and invariably reset the GMT hand when I don't want to.

Ah, fond memories of stumping fellow programmers after having learned the correct algorithm to determine a leap year back in high school some 45 years ago (where "%" is the MODULUS operator):

IF (year%4 = 0 AND year%100 != 0) OR year%400 = 0
THEN “Leap Year”

IOW, Leap Years are:
. any year that can be exactly divided by 4 (such as 2020, 2024, 2028, etc.);
. EXCEPT if it can be exactly divided by 100, then it isn't (such as 2100, 2200, etc);
. EXCEPT if it can be exactly divided by 400, then it is (such as 2000, 2400).

[I was told there'd be no algorithms or math ... but mostly math!]

41 Yesterday I got through to Social Security. They apparently never got my application for Medicare Part B, mailed in late Dec. -- though they did get my request to stop withholding. I faxed them the forms. So it looks like my retirement has got to hold off for a while. It depresses me no end to think I've got to hang on here in this prison (albeit a somewhat comfortable one, I admit) for at least a couple of months more.

Damn.

I'll call them in a week or so and make sure the application got in.

I used to hang out with a "true communist", meaning an avowed Marxist-Leninist, who was a hoot to get drunk and talk politics with. He hated all the same people i hated, because in his estimation everyone that i would call a communist was, to him, the Fascists. He thought McCarthy was basically a hero. And the people who were generally called "the right wing" were all just useless posers not worth even thinking about. He was anti Uniparty back when i was still cheering for the Patriot Act like an idiot.

But then it would veer into "Everything you know about Iran and North Korea is a lie". Not sure i could follow him down that road very far. But hey. Fuck Fascists, anyway.

Social Security's staff is not *completely* useless. Yesterday I emailed them through their website to ask how often your benefits get recalculated to see if your top 35 earning year list has changed. Wonder upon wonders, they answered that it's done in October and late March, with the changes if any reflected in the December and May benefit payments.

If I can just get that Med B deal done, I'll be ready.

Glad you are making progress. My autistic son (19) has been approved for SSI disability and it took a whole year. The website tells you the approval process and it sat at 90% from October until I called them in February. I didn’t reach a case worker but the phone person said they will send a message. Two weeks later he was fully approved.

In an interesting twist, because he lives with us they cut his disability amount by 33%. Also he was automatically put in Medicaid.

Don't believe your lying eyes and brain.
We'll tell you what to believe.

As Philips mentions, leftism. of any sort is simply a herd/herding belief. So-

What happens when Good Little Sheep are suddenly thrust outside their herd, as Jews/Israelis are now, and wolves welcomed instead into the Good Little Sheep beloved herd?

We're seeing the answer in real time.

Amazing how many Good Little Sheep are still trying to be eaten last, instead of facing and discarding the deadly fantasy of their herd beliefs.

225 I'm glad I got an HP 2025dn laserjet ~15 years ago. It was expensive and weighs a ton, but it still works fine, even if the drivers do mean I have to unplug it and plug it back into the computer whenever I need to print something :/

226 When I worked at HP 51U in 1995=98 HP was going full woke.

Posted by: Fisht at March 01, 2024 09:55 AM (BHEHK)

227 Way back in the day, I bought an HP printer when personal ink jets were new. Great printer, great price. When the next version of Windows came out, I think it was XP, the printer drivers were in the OS, which cut the printer function by almost half. I was told I needed to replace the perfectly functional printer to get back the functions they disabled in software. I swore I’d never buy another HP printer.

For years and years I used Canon and Epson, but they kept dying. When I needed an all in one for a scanner and copier function, I wound up buying an HP deskjet pro. The online reviews were glowing. It was excellent, and so was the software. Then I had to update my out of support Win 7 PC to a Win 11. The drivers that worked so well were now incompatible, and I needed to get the “HP Smart” app. It sucked.

The diagnostics are poor, the scan function was sliced, I needed an HP account via a registered email address to use the printer functions.. The app score from users is strangely nearly perfect, despite the terrible comments. So basically here I am again with an excellent HP printer that they essentially abandoned with dreadful software support.

229 @26, The fires up on the Plains are huge because they get driven by strong winds associated with the cold fronts that sweep along at this time of year. The conditions were perfect this time round, so it was very, very bad. When the front went through, it rained/snowed, and then the wind shifted to blow the fires back over previously burned territory. So, as I understand it, they are now able to get a handle on what fires remain.

Oh, and HP is a foul nest of vipers, obsessed with new ways to squeeze money out of their remaining foolish customers. My last one went out to the end of the range, where it is far more useful and I never have to purchase more toner cartridges. So there.
