Ain't No ONTs In The Apocalypse

Hello Horde! Welcome to Thursday's ONT. I know we tend to focus on the issues facing us here in the US, but we are not the only country with a crime problem.

Scandal.png

Now I'll admit, that seems a bit excessive for a $.50 coffee hack. On the other hand, as a society, you get what you tolerate. It's one of the biggest problems we have here. So where's the line?

”Compassion”

Drugs 1 - Oregon 0

With the nightly riots in Portland entering their seventh month and the air ringing with chants of “DEFUND THE POLICE!,” citizens were asked that November to vote on Ballot Measure 110, the Drug Addiction Treatment and Recovery Act. Offering addicts a soft landing rather than jail time - those possessing and using hard drugs in public would face no penalty other than a possible $100 citation, waived should the user voluntarily enter drug treatment - was in step with the year's anti-carceral mood. Its passage would also give Oregonians the distinction of being the first state in the nation to fully decriminalize drugs.

Dozens of organizations supported Measure 110, from the editorial board of The Oregonian to the Oregon ACLU. Harm reduction advocates saw Measure 110 as a “humane, effective approach that will save lives” and a positive step toward granting bodily autonomy to those who chose to do drugs. Portland’s newly elected progressive district attorney Mike Schmidt said Measure 110 “sends a clear message of strong public support that drug use should be treated as a public health matter rather than a criminal justice matter.”

Measure 110 passed with 59 percent of the vote.

“For us, it's like this dream happened,” said the executive director of the New York-based nonprofit Drug Policy Alliance, which had pumped an estimated $5 million into getting Measure 110 passed.

Meanwhile those living the dream saw an effort meant to help addicts act instead as an accelerant. Fatal opioid overdoses skyrocketed, especially from fentanyl. The number of homeless in Portland swelled to 6300. Violent crime spiked before dipping in 2023. People stopped going downtown, both because of the perception of danger and because it was too sad, seeing hundreds of people dope-sick, smoking fentanyl under blankets, shooting up in the park, stepping over used syringes and the foil and straws distributed free by advocates of harm reduction. Oregonians started having second thoughts, started wondering if their impetus to help was making things worse.

Self inflicted wounds.

Sorry About That. Wanna Kill Yourself?

Canadian Doctors Admit Covid ‘Booster’ Shot Paralyzed Woman, Offer to Euthanize Her to ‘Make Up for It’

Canadian doctors have admitted that a Covid “booster” shot from Moderna is responsible for a young Ontario woman now being paralyzed for the rest of her life.
37-year-old mother Kayla Pollock is now paralyzed from the neck down after receiving the mRNA injection and says her life has become a “living hell.”
According to a report from The Liberty Daily, however, doctors have offered to “make up for it” by euthanizing the young mom.
The doctors suggested that Pollock should apply for Canada’s controversial Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program and said they would help her application get accepted.

One of my wife's friends lost her husband yesterday. He just up and died at 42. She administered CPR, but to no avail. Now here's a sad commentary on today's world: What do you think my first question was?

Answer: Was he vaccinated?

How?

Alabama station in disbelief after 200-foot radio tower stolen

A radio station in Alabama was forced to go silent after thieves stole its 200-foot radio tower and other equipment from a building.

The station, WJLX, sent a landscaping crew to the site Friday morning for spring cleaning, only to find the 200-foot radio tower gone. When a crew member called the station’s general manager to break the news, he was in disbelief.

“What do you mean the tower is gone? Are you sure you’re in the right place? I actually used more colorful words than that,” Brett Elmore recounted to NBC News. “He said there’s wires all over the ground and the tower is gone.”

How on Earth do you steal a 200 ft radio tower? I mean, I'm sure they chopped it up and carted it off, but still... Anyone have any idea what the scrap value of a tower like that would be?

Nessun dorma

Back story: Pavarotti was supposed to perform the aria at the 1998 Grammy Awards. As the time came for him to go on, he told the producers that he couldn't do it. He was sick and unable to sing. In stepped the Queen of Soul.

Something needed to be done to fill that time. With a full orchestra and choir on hand, ideally, someone should sing “Nessun dorma.” One version of the story alleges that Sting was suggested to take Pavarotti’s place. He vehemently declined. The next thought was to ask Aretha to perform “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” Then, someone remembered that Aretha performed the song just two days earlier, and Ehrlich decided to take a shot in the dark and ask Aretha to perform the aria.

Ken Ehrlich has said that he can count on one hand the number of times he left his post during his decades-long tenure producing the Grammys. This was one of those times. He has often recalled running up the stairs to Aretha’s dressing room and making the request. After agreeing to the task at hand, Aretha recalled sitting quietly while surrounded by bedlam. A boombox was located so she could sit and listen to the recording of the rehearsal and hear the score. She met with the conductor and exchanged notes. Before she knew it, Ken was holding her hand and escorting her down the stairs and to the stage. During a post-show interview on the Grammys red carpet, Aretha revealed that she received the request to perform “about eight minutes” before she took the stage. EIGHT.

When they arrived, Aretha marveled at the staging. Ken has said that it’s one of the largest groups of musicians he ever had on a Grammy stage at once. As she prepared to take the stage, she squeezed his hand and said “Oooo. This is gonna be fun.”

You can see the performance at the link. It's not perfect, but on eight minutes warning, with an orchestra and chorus she had never even practiced with? Astonishing.

They Want WWIII So Bad

With Friends Like the GOP Establishment, Ukraine Doesn’t Need Enemies

It's always nice to have the useless likes of dopey Thom Tillis, smarmy Mitt Romney, and lib-symp John Cornyn lecturing us about how we need to spend endless unaccountable money on Ukraine with no articulated strategic objective, as opposed to defending our own border, and how if we don't agree we must love Vladimir Putin and blah blah blah blah blah. These guys are totally hard-core opponents of the Russians, which is really butch. I and a lot of the people they are insulting actually served in the Cold War, but somehow we are expected to defer to these guys on Russia? They're taking a hard line against Vladimir Putin even as they take no line on the border, and they are surprised and offended that their party is rejecting them.

Another fine rant by Kurt Schlichter. And speaking of WWIII, I want to recommend the books Mongol Moon and A Dance of Devils. They were written by Mark Sibley, who is a friend of mine (who is remarkably good-natured about being teased because it took him 3 years to write the sequel), and it's the WWIII scenario that scares the juices out of me: EMP. Suddenly we're back in the 18th century with 330 million people and no food producing or distributing system in place. Hell, I could survive for a good long time on what I've got in my freezers, but after an EMP attack? No freezers. Ooops. Frighteningly good books, I recommend them highly, almost as good as what Clancy wrote, albeit a lot shorter. Remember, ain't no tacos in the Apocalypse.

16 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. No big battlefield news today. The Russians slowly push forward, and sometimes the Ukrainians can hold them back.
2. Macron announced that France would send "support" troops to Ukraine, whereupon Sholtz of Germany said "Big deal. The UK already has Special Forces on the ground there." This announcement caused much outrage, as it was supposed to be a secret.
3. The above, along with the tiny size of Germany's last arms shipment, hints that Germany might be considering changing sides.

38 I am thinking of ways to further widen the chasm between "blue" thinking and "red" thinking.

What would happen if you started an airline and ran commercials that said all of your cockpit crews were picked on the order they qualified in training. Explicitly state that we do not care at all about skin color, or any other innate characteristics. We only choose the best to fly you and your family.

I think the NYT, CNN, Maddow and the usual harpies would scream about your racism. Meanwhile, all of the normal people with at least a modicum of intelligence would book flights on that airline.

44 Apparently, the new re-designed Toyota Tacoma is a piece O shite.

The TFL off-road guys broke the FWD transfer case on their TRD Off-Road Tacoma by driving, get this, Off-Road over a patch of ice.

Toyota also "redesigned" the sub frame by making it lighter, ie, cheaper and simply welded a little additional steel to some of the higher stress points.

Also, the 4 cylinder turbo charged engine delivering a whopping 278 horsepower while delivering a grand total of 1MPG in gas savings over the previous 6 cylinder, is gutless and sounds like a cat being strangled and is overall, too high strung, which is going to lead to longevity issues.

Allegedly, the new 4 runner is going to be based on this platform, so it looks like Toyota reliability is being sacrificed to the EPA/CARB gods.

73 Do any Lefties understand simple economics, especially as it regards energy usage in a national economy?

Biden shut in Keystone Pipeline on day one, taking oil off of the market. He also blocked leasing on federal lands. All of Western Europe has essentially banned fracking.

Russia gets something like 60% of its hard currency from the sale of oil and gas. As the West strangles their own supplies, Putin makes bank.

Further, the West is raising their own internal energy costs making almost all manufacturing no longer near parity with international competitors.

DURING SANCTIONS, THE RUSSIAN ECONOMY HAS GROWN ENOUGH TO PASS THE ECONOMY OF GERMANY!

I suspect somewhere around 60 or so...everyone under that age faced more danger from the clot shot then COVID itself.

She's playing her cards *very* close to her chest, as she knows that if anyone actually knew her real plan, all of her allies would abandon her in an instant.

I was going to say the same thing, but searched to see if it was already discussed.

there is NO WAY the engineers did not check the over air signal daily. There are VU meters on every board showing the on air signals.

My guess was that the tower was in need of serious maintenance (they are inspected regularly by specialized companies) and the owner said F. it.
The FCC used to take you license if you did not use the band. Not sure they still do, but the the bandwidth is worth money so only an idiot would screw this up so bad.

190 I'm watching Williamson interview Dr Anna Machin on fatherhood - apparently she just wrote a book. Her findings mostly match what people have known about the importance of fathers - they help make children resilient and better able to integrate with the world.

And...it is good to see someone doing science that doesn't seem to just support the latest leftist dogma.

But one point amused me, she was asked about opposition she's run into with her work and she pointed out its mostly come from feminists who argue that even giving empathy to fathers, let alone arguing for the importance of their role in raising children, is taking something from women...as if empathy is a zero sum game.

I'd prefer that he act Presidential for 6 months... and win.

Here's where the Electrical Collage stands at the moment:

1) Takes 270 to win.

2) To get there, Orange needs 33 more votes than he got last time,

3) Trump leads well outside the MOE in 3 states which Biden carried last time: GA: AZ & NV. That's 27 votes.

4) According to the RCP avg of all polls, Biden leads by one point in PA. Trump leads by 1-2 points in WI, well within the MOE.

5) That leaves MI. RCP sez Trump leads in MI by 3 points. That lead is borderline MOE. MI would get Trump over 270.

6) When RFK, JR & the others are included, Trump runs better than he does in the H2H polls, by and large.

So. Don't call anybody scum, & go to MI a lot and talk about "Are you better off?" instead.

You can have refrigeration without electricity. There are refrigerators that run on propane and even kerosene. You should be able to find a kerosene fridge from a hardware dealer that caters to the Amish market. They have a continuously-burning kerosene lamp, the chimney of which is the "hot" side of an absorption cooling unit. With a little effort, you could make it work on gas generated from making charcoal, or even hot air made from a solar collector.

A wind turbine is a good choice for well pumping. Build a water tower, and have the wind fan run a pump to fill it. When the tower becomes full, a float device shuts off the wind fan ( by folding the tail vanes). Old, old tech, used on farms for a century or more.

A piston pump downhole, with a pumpjack on the surface, and sucker rods to connect the pumpjack to the pump. The pumpjack is counterweighted to balance the standing column of water in the casing, so the power source has to lift only the additional few feet of water column made by the pump's stroke. It's how oilfield pumps work.

Sounds like a smart move. Canola is bland. The canola plant is an efficient way of turning sunlight into an edible cooking oil. I have to say, sesame oil is not for stir-frying as it doesn't take high heat well. It is a condiment oil, for that sesame flavoring. I add it to my stir-fry sauces, but not in a great amount. About the only thing I cook in sesame oil is pea pods with garlic and ginger; that's not a long cook.

I've avoided drinking (other than the single glass of wine in my wife's honor when I took to the kids out with me for our anniversary). Certain songs and talking about it, well, still fresh. Not as intense and often as it was, but if I'm in the car or alone in my room, I let it happen. I miss my wife, and when I grieve, I grieve. It is what it is for now. Not working (on family leave), so one less stressor.

325 I was talking to a friend earlier tonight about travelling in Europe. I told him about the time I went to Madrid, and I got sick. I didn't know if it was the flu, or food poisoning, or what. So I called down to the desk and asked if there was a clinic or something nearby, and they told me they'd send up the in-house doc. 5 minutes later, there was a knock at my door. The doc came in and examined me, very professional, and gave me some medicine (it was from something I ate), and the next day I felt much better and was able to go out and enjoy my vacation. I asked how much and he refused payment. It may be the best doc visit I ever had.

He didn't believe me when I told him how good the care was over there, which isn't uncommon when I tell that story. Seems nobody expects the Spanish inn physician.

I'd guess those are *designed* to come apart into big sections, so they can be loaded on trucks for the next venue of the carnival or fair . . . but that always sounded like a big big job. I guess the copper in the tower would be the attraction to the thieves?

Hey, if it means the owner is offering an otherwise solid house at a low price because of that, it wouldn't bother me in the least. If you dig back far enough, probably every older home has seen some death.

A house with a poltergeist would put me off, I admit, but mainly because they're noisy and troublesome. A quiet ghost appearing at the top of the stairs now and then? Pffft. "A good morning to you, Sir Roderick. How was 1826?"
