Biden Checks Into Walter Reed for a Physical as Obama's Aides Publicly Panic About His Age and "Mumbly" Speech

Former aides who worked directly with then-Vice President Joe Biden in the Obama administration have called current fears over his age "a very real issue" -- with some alarmed at how he has become more "frail" and "mumbly." "If you watch Joe Biden speak, oftentimes he sounds frail and he sounds more frail than he used to, even in 2019 and 2020," Jon Favreau, the chief speechwriter for Obama when Biden was vice president, said in a recent episode of the "Pod Save America" podcast. "The voice sounds frail, and he shuffles more because of the arthritis in his back," Favreau said, adding that the oldest-ever president also appears "mumbly."
He noted polls showing as many as 80% of Americans have expressed concern about the president being 81 -- saying it needs to be tackled head-on because voters can see his clear decline. Even though the president has made an ever-growing series of gaffes and verbal stumbles, he needs to appear on camera even more if he's to assuage voters' concerns about his age -- with his absence even worse, Favreau warned.
"When world events seem like they are overtaking him and he's not out there enough forcefully, that's what's getting people concerned," Favreau argued. Podcast co-host Jon Lovett, another ex-Obama speechwriter, agreed and argued that the Biden campaign should get the president out in public to demonstrate his mental and physical abilities -- even if they are concerned that he will make more gaffes.
Meanwhile, former Obama senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer expressed his own concerns in a separate interview. "It is a very real issue," he told Courier.
"If Biden can't assuage, particularly among his voters from 2020, then I don't think he can win the election -- so in some ways, it's the crux for his campaign."
Biden went to Walter Reed this morning.
President Joe Biden departed the White House Wednesday morning for Walter Reed where he will undergo his annual physical as voters raise concerns about the 81-year-old's fitness for a second term. The White House has faced constant questions over when Biden, the oldest president in history, would receive his exam ahead of the November 2024 presidential election. 'I'm going to Walter Reed to get my physical', Biden told reporters as he walked across the South Lawn to Marine One. The White House said results will be released later Wednesday. For months, polls have showed that a majority of Americans are doubtful that Biden can be effective through a second term, which would finish when he is 86 years of age.

Baseball is notorious for having "old school" guys who play players based on their "gut," rather than any kind of objective analysis.
Probably more common in the good ol' days, but still.
There were players who did things like strike out a lot, were physically slow, but could mash the ball when they got hold of it, and generally had good plate discipline.
But managers would play the flashy guy who swings at everything, and occasionally steals bases.

The problem was even the best takes they did were awful, and you can see Joe staring off screen trying to read the cue cards, and even then he can't get the answers right. They tried to have him play it off by putting his aviators on, so you can't see him struggling to read, but it didn't help and he so awkwardly is answering questions in to the abyss, instead of to the host.

It was panic because Bernie was easily going to win against the whole field. The establishment tried to back Kamala then Beto then Warren then Buttigieg (who won Iowa, remember) until it became obvious that none of them could last at 15% in the polls for more than a week. Biden just lasted, in the second tier under Bernie, until everyone else dropped out and he consolidated the not-Bernie vote.

He was an unhappy compromise.
Kalorama is the post powerful faction, but their preferred candidate (Harris) was a disaster. Left without their first choice, they had to scramble to find *someone* to put into the slot. Importantly, Kalorama, having failed to steamroll the other factions (most notably the Clinton/Gangster faction with Warren and the radicals with Sanders) with their choice, had to settle on someone they owned but that they could sell to the others to build out a weak coalition within the Party.
Biden ended up the guy. A stupid, controllable known quantity who was Kalorama's boy but knew the game and could at least make an effort at juggling the factional minefield.
Too bad his dementia was well on its way to acceleration and the plans haven't worked out. The factions and sub-factions are running wild.

Biden wasn't going to drop out.
Since becoming Obama's VP, Biden hasn't backed down from anything.
Besides, Biden was regularly polling above them throughout the primary. I don't think anyone in politics would agree to drop out in favor of someone regularly polling under them.
It was either coalesce around Biden, or continue to split the not-Bernie vote. If all but Biden and Warren (or any other combination) had dropped, Bernie would have won the primary. The idea that the establishment was happy having to settle with Joe is ludicrous considering the vast effort they put into trying to take him down for the previous year.

That is a very useful skill-- for a PARTY WHIP-- but not for a PARTY LEADER who sets the agenda.
McConnell could have been a very useful cog in a machine led by a strong majority leader who would have set the ideological tone for the party in alignment with our voters and then relied on someone like McConnell to twist the arms to get the votes to execute that vision. But we never had that.

He is missing the point of McConnell, the point of the Party and the point of politics.
The point of the Party is to divorce politics (the accumulation of power and unearned wealth) from the will of the people through the means of deceit when possible, rejection when needed and main force in the event of emergency.
That's it. That's the game. Failing to inspire the base, or to do what the base wants or whatever is *not* a failure of politics or of a Party leader. The political leader is there to ensure that politics *never* bends to or depends on the will of the people, except in such cases where the will of the people is also the will of the Party.
McConnell is, in fact, a very good politician. He has accumulated much unearned wealth and power while strengthening the Party and opposing the people.

I find that likely. But I think Carl's point stands either way. McConnell was good as a backroom pol who could count votes, twist arms, make deals, etc. He was NOT good at reading the voters, creating a vision, inspiring followers, etc. Whether he was not good at those things because he was a kept man or because he just didn't have those skills, the result is the same.

Other factions don't mind too much because Jill's faction isn't strong enough to replace them like a more active and dynamic president might. Even Kamala might be able to pull it off. History has many examples where a weak king or emperor threw off the domination of one group for another, or even his own people.
