Decrepit, Corrupt Corporatist and Enforcer of the Deep State Mitch McConnell Will Finally Step Down From Senate Leadership... In November
Update: He Claims He "Plans" to Serve Out His Term Until 2027

The retirement of a Chinese agent.

Seung Min Kim
@seungminkim

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Mitch McConnell will step down as the Senate's Republican leader in November, ending a record run in the powerful post.

This means McConnell will also leave the Senate. This controlling cocksucker narcissist will not serve as merely "1 of 100." He will ragequit like Kevin McCarthy did.

He is too exalted a being to serve in any capacity except king.

Before you celebrate, note that McConnell's term is incomplete. And the governor of Kentucky is a liberal Democrat, Andy Bashear.

Bashear will appoint a Democrat to fill the seat until a special election is held, and he will have every incentive to delay this special election as long as the law permits. (I don't know how long -- maybe three months or six months at most, I'd guess.)

Now, Kentucky's legislature passed a law, anticipating that Mitch the Bitch might die or quit, that says that the governor can only choose a replacement from a list of nominees the legislature selects. And the Republican legislature will of course nominate a list of Republicans.

However, Bashear says that law violates the state constitution, which gives the governor this power and does not mention a role for the legislature. Generally, a mere law cannot deviate from or change a constitution. The constitution sits on a higher plane and can only be modified by amendment.

I don't want it to be true, but I think Bashear i right here.

So... Mitch McConnell is going to do exactly what I feared he would do when he insisted on running again despite his advanced age (and massive unpopularity) and give this seat to the Democrats.

These old powerhungry monsters just will not think of anything except their own desperate need to control. It is control that sustains them, like blood sustains an ancient vampire.

And they will not give up control until they have one foot in the grave, or more.

Update: lost in space tells me that McConnell claims he'll still serve the last two years of his term:

Brietbart is reporting "McConnell said he plans to serve out his Senate term, which ends in January 2027, 'albeit from a different seat in the chamber.'"

We'll see. Obama "planned" to not do that thing in your (male) mouth.

9 Willowed: This resulted in Leda bearing two eggs from which hatched Helen; later to become the cause of the Trojan Wars and a boy; Pollux, who were the immortal offspring of Zeus. The second egg revealed another girl and boy; Clytemnestra (who later became the wife of Agamemnon, the leader of the Greeks in the Trojan Wars) and Castor; who were the mortal children of king Tyndareus; the husband of Leda. . . .

Makes Leda sound like a cat, whose kittens can each have a different father. I guess the answer is that Zeus's seed was divine, so anything went.

You have to wonder if young Helen and Pollux knew they were immortal and that Clytemnestra and Castor were not . . . and if the latter two also knew of the difference growing up. By adulthood they must have known. Yet Castor and Pollux were supposedly inseparable.

And did Tyndareus know the immortal two were not his?

43 Damn, I never had a chance to ask Google what came first, the chicken or the egg.
Posted by: Colin at February 28, 2024 12:40 PM (/z/eU)
_______

I always thought the answer to this was obvious: the egg. Given that evolution occurs between generations -- at the biological, genetic level -- at some point there was a bird who was not quite a chicken who laid an egg that contained an embryo with enough genetic variation (evolution) to be classified as the first chicken.

Put another way, an animal can't spontaneously evolve itself. So any pre-chicken was was already born -- ie, before it was able to lay an egg -- was always gonna be a pre-chicken and not a chicken. It was the egg that contained the first chicken. So there you have it: the egg came first.

88 Accept the positive news and hope for the best. It would have been great if McConnell had used his mastery of the Senate for our benefit rather than his own, but he wasn't. His leaving - however it happened - is a necessary for change. So this is good news. Will see who will be able to step up and fill his role. Suspect whoever takes the helm will have a short tenure.

I always thought the answer to this was obvious: the egg.
Posted by: Elric Blade

Well, the egg came first since there were egg-laying animals long before there were birds.

If you try to answer using the unspoken assumption that it's a "chicken egg" and not just any old egg, now it becomes a matter of semantics.

Is a "chicken egg" an egg which contains a chicken, or an egg laid by a chicken?

The answer of which came first changes with that definition.

The president is expected to be seen by his physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, who has previously issued a report on the president’s health following physicals. Biden will appear before reporters at 1:30 p.m. ET. when he delivers remarks on community safety and actions to fight crime.

========

There are heavy indications that small dollar donations to the GOP, at pretty much every level, have fallen off a cliff.

Big dollar donors drive policy, but the millions that small dollar donors provide still present a hole need filling.

Thune endorsing Trump...after it's obvious that the extended multi-year effort to replace him with pretty much anyone else failed miserably and are limping along pathetically on the husk that was Nikki Haley's promising career, is just an effort-free and low-cost way to try and get on the base's good side.

My advice continues, though: never donate to politicians.

I have found that getting on the mailing list of local places that secure barrels of specific brands that have something unique to that specific maker/bottle is the way to go. $40-$70 and you get what is very likely a once in a lifetime bottle, and some of them are extremely good. And they're all very reasonably priced.

255 DU is down for maintenance, so let's see the Daily Kos comments:

he leaves his lethal legacy as a knife slash to the face of Lady Liberty. He has done every possible thing he could to neuter our democracy and turn it into a theocratic oligarchy. I will dance when he simmers in Hell.

So a Trump sycophant, John Thune, now stands to run the Senate if we can’t overcome a horrible senate map. his replacement is going to make us all think of the expression “going from the frying pan into the fire...”

If Dobbs and IVF “can’t overcome a horrible senate map,” we deserve everything we’re going to get. This cycle is custom-made for us winning some historic upsets. We’ve got to start taking advantage of this fact.

WV is gone. That puts us at 50-50. There are Dem seats up in MI, MT, OH, AZ, NV, and WI. The Republican seats really aren’t likely pickups for us. We have to run the table to even keep a 50-50...and that assumes we win the WH again.

McConnell is THE WORST. NOW he quits. Right when he could stand up to MAGA and actually do some good. Pathetic.

Yea, and I'm 90% convinced that PVW is literally just some barrels the distillery had sitting around for no specific purpose, and somebody came up with this marketing plan. If you look closely at how the company describes the origin and how they make it, it seems to me like they're embellishing my "just lying around" theory.

I'm a scotch drinker so while I like bourbon, I'm not an expert at it. So maybe PVW has some special complexity or subtlety that I missed. But the guy I was drinking it with -- the guy who bought the bottle -- is a serious bourbon drinker. He had the same reaction as I did.

There's a complicated back story on Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle and William Larue Weller -- the namesakes of the current wheated bourbons made by B Trace. The products used to be made a now-defunct distillery called Stitzel-Weller, where both of those guys were distillers back in the day. The Van Winkle line is very good bourbon, for sure. But the scarcity is driven by hype and a lot of idiots who have more money than brains.

141 My husband works part time at the liquor store (state controlled.)
I just asked him, he recommends Evan Williams Black Label.

x2 on EW Black - My goto for bourbon cocktails, but still good sipper with an ice cube. Anytime I try anything else at that price point for the same purpose, I always end up disappointed.

322 The writing is on the wall. Trump will be our next President and he will be bringing hell with him. All those within the "Republican" party who colluded with democrats and the deep state to fuck with the man are trying to get out of the line of fire. The "old guard" of the party just wanted it to be 1987 forever. They loved the cold war and the graft, the prospect of the Islamic terrorist and the graft they could get from that.
Now it's different. Those awful voters think they should have a say. "Trump did this. He kept his promises or tried to keep them. Those people think they have the right to expect results? This is Trump fault! We must end the threat of Trump! ". Now he's coming back to finish the work and they are afraid of being exposed completely.

McConnell’s health has been part of the larger conversation lawmakers have had about the need for a new generation of leadership, amid concerns about the health and mental fitness of lawmakers in their 80s and 90s.

My thing is that we are in the middle of a generation-long and concentrated effort to change the GOP, starting with the rise of the Tea Party.

Yes, the establishment and the base have been at war for decades (especially the late 40s/early 50s when it was essentially Taft vs. Rockefeller), but this fight is public, sustained, and seems material.

That being said, it was always going to be very slow. It feels like enough has happened at the federal level to affect how the House works, for now, but the slow-moving, slow-changing Senate was always going to take longer. Will Thune be a material change over McConnell? I doubt it, but as I said in a previous thread, I could imagine him being like McCarthy after Ryan.

Still, the change is happening, morphing the GOP, slowly, into a populist and working class party at the same time that the Democrats have fully embraced being the class of the activist and wealthy.

The version I saw was they are laying there, the egg is smirking and smoking a cigarette, and the chicken is looking confused and sad.
The caption said: And now we know.

390 374 The only way to get Schumer to leave will be when he has a toe tag

Not necessarily, NY is going hard left and old, pale, stale, white men are going to be challenged by the left. Schumer relies upon Wall Street billionaires for his funding but that won't necessarily stop the increasing anti Semitic left from controlling the votes he needs to stay in office.

395 362 How would Donald Trump or Ron DeSantis be able to implement anything like dismantling the Deep State with a hostile anti-conservative Republican Party?

DeSantis supporters NEVER gave us an answer or explanation. Not tryin to regurgitate the Trump/DeSantis wars but I am genuinely curious. DeSantis people said Trump can't do it......ok, how was DeSantis going to pull off everything Trump didn't do.

I look at this old scumbag McConnell and it just reminds how this party is and has been for decades.
Posted by: JROD at February 28, 2024 01:50 PM (IlL6s)

Ok I'll bite on this one. The logic was that DeSantis actually has people. Loyal people, that have been working with him and for him in Florida, that he can use to staff these positions. The knock on Trump was that he had four years to do it and didn't. I don't think it's because he didn't want to, for what its worth. He was like the dog that caught the car.

The counter from Trump is that he now should have more people this time around, and I think Project 2025 reflects an understanding of this issue.

Anyway, a moot point, but there's your answer

412 Probably already discussed, I assume the legal beagles are all over this.

My belief is a Senatron can be replaced at any time during their term, but a "special election" is only held every two years.

In other words, if Mitch "retires" after this November, the appointed replacement has a full two years to sit there, whereas if Mitch retired now, there would be a "special" election held this November, then that winner would sit until the schedule replacement election, in Nov. 2026.

So just like Mrs. Luntz, Mitch is calculating to keep the seat out of the hands of someone the voters might want.

I'll give McConnell one bit of credit: he stuck to his guns on Supreme Court nominations. I really thought he was going to cave on Garland, but to his credit, he didn't. And he didn't cave to Democrats' demands that he wait a similar period after RBG's death. Pretty much the only times he didn't play RINO games, thank God. Ace has argued that someone else could have done equally well, and he's not wrong. McConnell may have been motivated more by revenge (remember when McConnell told Harry Reid that he'd "rue the day" he nuked the filibuster for judicial noms?), but a win is a win. He may not have ever come through for us at any other time, but he did when the Supreme Court was on the line, and I will always appreciate him for that.

465 @399 you may be correct. I live in NY and the Dem party has an ongoing internal war between the old traditional left and the hardcore. My county which was split Rep/Dem has gone hard left but the rest of upstate counties are mostly R, but the Dems are traditional. NYC and it's leftist population is the problem.

467 @395 Milquetoast Mortage-"Loyal people" you mean loyal within the Republican Party establishment? Leave any mention of Trump out of it.
This is what always got me with the whole DeSantis thing. Explain and sell me on how he has these "loyal people" that are going to re-jigger the GOP to be cooperative to his Super Conservative policies?

Loyal people? Who? Why are they hiding?

470 LOL. Gavin Newsom put a carve out into the new minimum wage rule for his buddies at Panera. You don't have to pay the $20 min wage if you operate an on premises bakery and sell bread as a stand alone item.

How long until EVERY restaurant adds a couple of bread maker machines to their kitchen? Put it on the menu like some places do with Prime Rib with notice it may sell out. Then make four or five loaves per day.

In that context I just meant loyal to DeSantis. Trump being able to find people loyal to Trump was obviously a huge issue - which is why his extended family had to be such a big part of the equation.

485 Little comfort that McConnell says he's stepping down, when really he isn't until 3 years from now. So there's still hope that son of a bitch will end up in jail for his vast tally of crimes or perhaps meet an equally just end, cosmically. Whatever his fate, it can't be severe enough.

487 " n spite of widespread bipartisan support, the COFA agreements [(Compacts of Free Association – with three strategically important Central Pacific nations: Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands] were in fact opaquely removed from consideration the other day. . . .the bill it was in wouldn’t even have required an offset. Now a large group of other Senators, led by Senator Risch and Senator Hirono, are fighting against the clock and to try to convince their leadership to put it back in."

"Lose the Central Pacific and we’ll be defending from Hawaii and Southern California while all the countries that were counting on us – Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Australia and others – start to hedge their bets.

"China will love it. The PRC already has strong commercial and political presence in the COFA states (and just about every other Pacific island nation) and is aiming to pry them away from the United States."

"Opaquely removed." By four Senators. McConnell, Schumer, Patty Murray, and Susan Collins.
