Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | French President Macron: We Must Do "Whatever It Takes" to Rescue Ukraine's Failing Effort Against Russia, and "Nothing Is Ruled Out"Via Jazz Shaw-- what a great idea! Macron didn't actually say "send troops to Urkaine." But "whatever it takes" and "nothing is ruled out" means, well, he's not ruling out sending NATO troops to fight Russia directly. Via Politico, which is Axios for YA readers. (Axios is Politico for Kidz.)French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday night said "nothing is ruled out" when it comes to sending Western troops to help Ukraine. He warned the situation on the ground was so critical, and the stakes for Europe were so high, that much more effort was needed to fight back Russia's invasion. "Whatever it takes": "We're at a critical point in the conflict where we need to take the initiative," Macron said after hosting European leaders at the Elysée Palace for a summit on Ukraine. "We're determined to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes."Macron more like Crackron amirite Jazz Shaw's article discusses what would happen if France, unilaterally, sends troops to Ukraine. That seems to be a highly fantastical scenario, but if France did go to war with Russia, and Russia attacked France, that would invoke NATO's Article V and compel the US to come to France's defense. Or, more likely: It would result in Article V being officially repudiated. From the foul, corrupt AP: Germany and Poland immediately said "Count us out." BRUSSELS (AP) -- European military heavyweights Germany and Poland affirmed Tuesday that they would not be sending troops to Ukraine, after reports that some Western countries may be considering doing so as the war with Russia enters its third year. The head of NATO also said the U.S.-led military alliance has no plans to send troops to Ukraine, after other central European leaders confirmed that they too would not be providing soldiers. The Kremlin, meanwhile, warned that a direct conflict between NATO and Russia would be inevitable if the alliance sends combat troops. "In this case, we need to talk not about probability, but about the inevitability (of conflict)," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. The New York Times reported Sunday that the CIA built 12 secret spy bases in Ukraine. On Sunday The New York Times published an explosive and very belated full admission that US intelligence has not only been instrumental in Ukraine wartime decision-making, but has established and financed high tech command-and-control spy centers, and was doing so long prior to the Feb. 24 Russian invasion of two years ago. Among the biggest revelations is that the program was established a decade ago and spans three different American presidents. The Times says the CIA program to modernize Ukraine's intelligence services has "transformed" the former Soviet state and its capabilities into "Washington's most important intelligence partners against the Kremlin today." This has included the agency having secretly trained and equipped Ukrainian intelligence officers spanning back to just after the 2014 Maidan coup events, as well constructing a network of 12 secret bases along the Russian border--work which began eight years ago. These intelligence bases, from which Russian commanders' communications can be swept up and Russian spy satellites monitored, are being used launch and track cross-border drone and missile attacks on Russian territory. The full NYT article is here, through an archive. French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday night said "nothing is ruled out" when it comes to sending Western troops to help Ukraine.
++++ France does not speak for the West. Neither does the United Kingdom. Neither does Germany. Neither, anymore, does the United States. But let's be real about what Macron is saying: he is saying that United States will invade Ukraine. That's what "The West" means. In a way, there was a time when that would be justifiable, as there was a time when we were the imperial hegemon. We are still that hegemon, but we are no longer rich, productive or competent enough to sustain the position. There is a real chance that the position formally - insofar as this kind of thing is *ever* "formal" - ends over Ukraine. We either overrule our imperial provinces in Europe and refuse to engage (in which case, Ukraine will fall) or we agree with them, engage directly, and lose due to incompetence on the front and unrestricted attack at home, largely cyber but not exclusively (in which case, Ukraine will fall). The third option - that we engage and win - is possible but not very likely. We've already drained both the treasury and the armory. The CIA worked with 5 Eyes and Ukraine to run the Russia collusion hoax. The dirty secrets of a lot of western countries are buried in Ukraine. Ukraine was a perfect spot to do all sorts of things they couldn’t do at home. Posted by: JackStraw at February 27, 2024 02:39 PM (x8HvX) 181

Posted by: Thomas Paine at February 27, 2024 02:37 PM (lTGtQ) ++++ That's all icing on the cake. Germany is finished anyway. German industry has been scrambling to move the hell out of Germany since the war began. The German automakers are doubling down in foreign countries. The German chemical manufacturers are building vast industrial complexes in foreign countries. They know the risks, and are moving at breakneck speed to get the hell out of Germany while there's still a chance to have a going concern on the other side of this. They aren't evacuating Germany, but they're building out enormous external capacity and diversifying as quickly as possible and at tremendous expense. The US has been a *huge* beneficiary of this. Ukraine is important to Russia because
- They are competitor in energy supply to Europe. Russia wants dominance - They are competitor in grain supply to Europe. - Industry/business. They have (had) a lot and oligarchs were making bank. Russian oligarchs wanted control and wanted to keep EU and US oligarchs from eating their lunch. - They are integral to Russian empire. (glory, etc.) - They are very close culturally and it does not help to show Russians that there is another way. Moscow is doing great, but outside the ring roads they have been living off glory and honor. You don't want those people seeing how badly they are doing compared to other "russians" who broke off. Because of the close ties there are a lot of family and business contacts. Ukraine is important to NATO because - corruption. It feeds the blob. It justifies the blob. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at February 27, 2024 02:40 PM (P9kBh) ++++ There was a decent chance of that plan working and it nearly did work as the Ruble began to collapse along with Russian exports. Two things queered the deal: the demand for energy at all costs, particularly from China and South Asia, and Anton Siluanov. Anton Siluanov is the Russian finance minister, and it's possible that he actually saved Russia in the first month or two of the war. He arrested the collapse of the Ruble and staved off hyperinflation by essentially laundering the currency through gold, limited to Russian citizens. This caused massive repatriation of Rubles, quelled the panic among the masses, and halted the collapse. It took a huge amount of Russian gold to do it - and it's the kind of bold, ultra-high-risk gamble that can only work once - but it did work. Germany was always on the fence since Germany struck a grand bargain with Russia where Germany would broker Russian gas. That meant that what was good for Russia was good for Germany. They did not want this war, and they did not want Ukraine undercutting their market in Russian gas. IMHO, Germany also understood that Ukraine had (had) an impressive industrial *potential* that could undermine German industry. (Poland too, but Poland was cut out of the gas loop. The purpose of Nordstream was to leave Poland high and dry.) I think Germany got made a pig by events. They wanted Ukraine under Russian boot, but their bullshit upended everything and they had no gas, a public fearful of Russian aggression, and Europe figuring out the game. I believe (IMHO) that the USA was behind the propaganda for the war, in part to undermine (fuck) Germany and make them pay for siding with the Russian in the gas/grain war against Europe. Several EU and NATO members are considering military deployments to Ukraine, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico claimed on Monday.
Doubtful... or you'd see a million Chinese and North Korean troops there, too. China most certainly is acutely aware of a destabilized Western neighbor. And all those new "security agreements". If EU nations actually sent troops... China would go nuts. If it's AFU soldiers, give them what they need. The US has given an outsized portion already, including cash grants to keep their economy afloat. I support sending US gear to Ukraine... let the EU pay the bill. In reality, the US should be picking up 15% ish of the war bill. MAX. It's called NATO, not the USATO. If that had been the attitude 80 years ago, we'd all be speaking German now. There was no NATO in WW2. NATO exists NOW as an alliance of nations pooling resources for defense. EU nations have become complacent allowing the US to pick up most of the military costs of readying a defense. Looks like that's changing now. That's a good thing. But according to local officials, “it’s an environmental disaster.” “I’ve been around natural disasters all of my life, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Siskiyou County Supervisor Ray Haupt recently told the Globe. “The river is essentially dead, as is everything in it.” Posted by: SMOD at February 27, 2024 03:08 PM (RHGPo) 386

Hacker: Ah, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I'm not that unilateralist! Anyway, the Americans will always protect us from the Russians, won't they?
Sir Humphrey: Russians? Who's talking about the Russians? Hacker: Well, the independent deterrent. Sir Humphrey: It's to protect us against the French! Hacker: The French?! But that's astounding! Sir Humphrey: Why? Hacker: Well they're our allies, our partners. Sir Humphrey: Well, they are now, but they've been our enemies for the most of the past 900 years. If they've got the bomb, we must have the bomb! Hacker: If it's for the French, of course, that's different. Makes a lot of sense. Sir Humphrey: Yes. Can't trust the Frogs. AlJazerra live > Zelenskyy in Saudi Arabia to push for peace, POW deal with Russia
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has sought to position himself as a potential mediator to end war between Ukraine and Russia. In parts, "The head of state (Zelenskyy) noted in particular Saudi Arabia's strivings to help in restoring a just peace in Ukraine," the statement said. Saudi Arabia's leadership can help find a just solution." The state-run Saudi Press Agency said that MBS had "affirmed the Kingdom's keenness and support for all international endeavors and efforts aimed at resolving the Ukrainian-Russian crisis." "Zelenskyy's trip on Tuesday came as Kyiv's forces are slowly being pushed back in eastern Ukraine." --- Like the book, 1984, a different war scenario every other day. Personally, I wish as much interest & involvement was shown giving Sinwar over to the Israelis, exactly where that gutless wonder belongs. Posted by: L - We're done for now. 24k fewer soldiers but still the same budget. It’s neat how that works with government.

The New York Times reported Sunday that the CIA built 12 secret spy bases in Ukraine. Spy bases and covert bioweapons research through the good graces of Fookball Fauci. Boy, Ukraine was a regular gubmint shitbirds' paradise, wasn't it? And did not #FJB basically just invite Russia to come on over and snap up some Ukraine territory? from Ace:
Jazz Shaw's article discusses what would happen if France, unilaterally, sends troops to Ukraine. That seems to be a highly fantastical scenario, but if France did go to war with Russia, and Russia attacked France, that would invoke NATO's Article V and compel the US to come to France's defense. Or, more likely: It would result in Article V being officially repudiated. --------------------------- Actually, just like many NATO nations France already has sent troops to Ukraine. Russia has made it a practice to send some high value missiles or drones to blow up places where they hang out -- France was miffed when a cluster of them was in a hotel and Russia blasted a hole in their suites for them. But these are unofficial troops and hush hush so we can pretend they aren't there. Posted by: Oldcat at February 27, 2024 03:50 PM (eoQWY) 445
Only military in the EU that is worth a damn is the UK. Oops. No longer in the EU.
Posted by: Montec at February 27, 2024 02:22 PM (YofvK) Also no longer worth a damn. They have send so many tanks to Ukraine they no longer have enough to train all the men, they have to rotate troops. All their artillery and ammo has already been shipped out. Their special forces are good, but they aren't much better sitting in a trench catching shells and drones than their Ukrainian recruits. Posted by: Oldcat at February 27, 2024 03:55 PM (eoQWY) 446

I think this fear is why Russia declared those four oblasts as inviolably part of Russia.
They understand that proxy wars have happened in past, even with Russians fighting USA directly, but never on US or Russian soil. By making it "Russia" they intended to scare off NATO troops from getting too directly involved. Posted by: PFC Obvious at February 27, 2024 02:27 PM (XxqJv) Several EU statemen have publicly stated that the West, guarantors that Ukraine would discuss the status of Donbas areas in 2014 as part of the Minsk accords and preserve ethnic Russian rights said that they had no intention of doing so and were just buying time to rearm Ukraine for conflict with these states and Russia. Therefore the incorporation of these districts has reset the status, these states will be inevitably lost to Ukraine in any peace deal. Likely other Russian areas like the cities of Kharkov and Odessa will also be delivered to Russia, ending threats of NATO bases on the Black Sea.
