Smell You Later Cafe

icelandfondation.jpg
Iceland
by Manfred Teh
The building is a lighthouse.
It can be seen in daylight here.

Dog can't believe how TOTALLY COOL his owner is being right now.

Another waving bear.

Another entry from David French's Dreamjournal.

Look at me! I can do it, I can do it!

Rescuing a puppy abandoned in the woods and healing him until he's a pretty boy.

How a camel climbs a steep sand dune.

A gathering of hounds.

What a sexy, seductive bird.

Whales playing bumper cars. It's the fourth video, in case the link doesn't bring you straight there.

Breaching whales.

Sound on:

30 Much as Iceland is named after it most prodigious product, Ice, Auckland in the same way takes it's name from it's most common animal, the mighty Auck.

Feared and revered, the Auck is much sought for and esteemed by the Hottentots as an article of food, and is frequently presented as a great delicacy to the young ‘gins.’ By the settlers it is not often eaten, owing to the natural feeling of dislike which is created by its form and habits. Those, however, who do not entertain these feelings, or are able to overcome them, find the flesh of the creature really excellent. It is not unlike that of a chicken, to which, in flavor, it is fully equal, and eats best when stewed or curried.

59 In Dongola the crocodile is caught for the sake of its flesh, which is regarded as a delicacy. The flesh and fat are eaten by the Berbers, who consider them excellent. Both parts, however, have a smell of musk so strong that few strangers can eat crocodiles’ flesh without violent sickness following. Death usually follows, after which the poor sufferer is revived and then, quite sadly, dies again.

Once you rule embryos as life, you place the people doing the service in a position of possible being charged for involuntary manslaughter.

I believe all the IVF clinics had to close to figure out the legal ramifications of the ruling and what happens if they lose embryos.

91 >>Not sure why we don't end crocodiles.

One of the coolest trips I ever took was a visit to this hotel.

http://tinyurl.com/y9pasc9r

It's closed now but it was an incredible place. One night a couple guides took us on a crocodile hunt. We cruised up the Amazon in this skinny boat with a 50 hp outboard and one of the guides standing in the front with a spotlight driven by a car battery. He scanned the water for eyeballs and when he spotted one he dove in the water and grabbed a croc and brought it to the boat for those of us who wanted to hold it. I shit you not, he dove into the Amazon in the middle of the night trying to catch a crocodile.

The show was a Trip-Shoe-Gazer band calling themselves The Shiver Effect, and I gotta say, it was amazing. I've never found anything about them after. 107 The swift night of the high Himalayas was now almost upon them. Fortunately, the road was very good, as roads went in that region, and they were both carrying torches. There was not the slightest danger, only a certain discomfort from the bitter cold. The sky overhead was perfectly clear, and ablaze with the familiar, friendly stars. At least there would be no risk, thought George, of the pilot being unable to take off because of weather conditions. That had been his only remaining worry.
He began to sing, but gave it up after a while. This vast arena of mountains, gleaming like whitely hooded ghosts on every side, did not encourage such ebullience. Presently George glanced at his watch.
“Should be there in an hour,” he called back over his shoulder to Chuck. Then he added, in an afterthought, “Wonder if the computer’s finished its run. It was due about now.”
Chuck didn’t reply, so George swung round in his saddle. He could just see Chuck’s face, a white oval turned toward the sky.
“Look,” whispered Chuck, and George lifted his eyes to heaven. (There is always a last time for everything.)
Overhead, without any fuss, the stars were going out.

121 I think the AL ruling sprung from a couple who froze embryos years ago, then found out it was only a 5 year deal to freeze them, and the frozen ones were either sold or destroyed per the contract.

When my wife and I decided to do IVF we talked about the remaining embryos and what to do with them. We ultimately decided that the remainder are not viable life since they are not implanted in a uterus. But also, elected not to freeze them as that might be acknowledging the embryos ARE life.

On the other hand, we have friends who had an un-needed frozen donor embryo implanted and now have a happy little girl.

Wiki doesn't say but it does say...

In 2004, "The Nine Billion Names of God" won the retrospective Hugo Award for Best Short Story for the year 1954.[1] Kirkus Reviews called it "quietly remarkable",[2] and The Guardian considered it to be a "wonderful apocalyptic rib-tickler".[3] Stating that the story "introduced many Western readers to an intriguing speculation in Oriental religions", Carl Sagan in 1978 listed "The Nine Billion Names of God" as among the "rare few science‐fiction [stories that] combine a standard science‐fiction theme with a deep human sensitivity".[4] In 1986 it was included in the anthology Isaac Asimov Presents The Great SF Stories 15 as one of the best science fiction short stories of 1953.

Posted by: Jen the original at February 26, 2024 08:04 PM (WPtjo)

As I understand it, some embryos were accidentally destroyed and the couple sued. (I have now heard conflicting accounts of how they were destroyed)

Their lawyer went for greater damages by saying that their negligently children were killed and the Alabama SC agreed that Alabama law says that fertilized embryos are children.

149 My squirrel 'hunting' practice is actually due to the early 1980s and the sky-high interest rates. My family got stuck with a house which was impossible to sell at 17%. It had been rented out, ghetto, long story but multiple generations of squirrels had been living in this house for years.
To rid the house of squirrels it developed I had to eradicate the memory of the local squirrels that they lived there. I shot 3-6 squirrels every goddam day for over about 2 months. A Benjamin, a little .22 short pistol, I shot squirrels until I was sick of it. I ate squirrel grilled, boiled, and cooked.

Ever skinned a squirrel? They're basically a rat. You need the hair off, there are various ways to do that, I just burned it off on a grill usually, then peeled the skin with a straight razor. Yu can boil the skin off, or, if you are all Hoity-Toity and your Old Lady is down, you can 'cook', which is some alchemy involving water, etc. I never bothered with it.

One of us had to cut off all their hair and couldn’t do the sideburn thing and they said he was going to get $200 million, because they were going to pay him $20 million a movie to do 10 movies and that’s how the conversation happened. 200 The thing about exclusive, expensive country clubs is that a lot of business gets done there so members can see it as a sort of investment. One of the things about the American system is you get decently high up the leadership ranks and it's very feudalistic, it's all potentates and their vassals making mutually beneficial deals and messing around with their rivals. In this environment, such social enclaves perform a necessary function in the same way that His Majesty's feasts and hunting trips did in ye olde medieval times.

Fun Fact for the terminally bored: Beretta set up a handgun production line in Brazil to improve the 1951 into the 92. Beretta then sold the idea of the gun to the cash-strapped Italian Government as the '92' but made most of the guns in Brazil and imported them into Italy. Italy then demanded a few changes before an investment happened: hence the 92S. Almost all the original 92 Berettas were made in Brazil and sent to Italy. The 92S is in fact the first Italian 92 which later became the M9; but then the Brazilian 92 became the Taurus 92/99, which can interchange kind-of with the Beretta but not because it's a copy. but because it's the original.

There's a point about scale and empty space. There are far more molecules of water in a glass of water than the stars in the observable universe. One mole of water is about 18 mL.

At the scale of stars and galaxies space in much, much sparser.

Yes, even for the glass of water, that volume is still mostly empty space.

But you seem to think the people taking the punishment for living under what is essentially a dictatorship are the people who voted for Lula. On the whole, the people who voted for Lula are the people who are profiting from it.

the people who have been demonstrating are not Lula voters suddenly realizing their error, they are people who saw the fraud and are getting mad over it again. You might as well blame the Brazilian military for getting involved in a coup since the last three times turned them into an armed gang and who's leaders would most likely be convicted of war crimes in the future when they lose again due to lack of popular support, you know, like the last three times.

Do you think the Brazilians should have voted harder?

Anyhow, the protests are part of the Lula impeachment.

I hope they aren't expecting Arizona amounts of Sun. I'm still a little sore about that. Wonderful golf course situated in Western PA farmland in a pretty area of the county. On top of a high plateau, you got some wonderful views up there. Such is life, I guess.
