I *almost* like it, but I just don't. It's getting a little bit too close to the pseudo-realism stuff of the 20s and 30s.
And sure enough, 1928. It hadn't yet accelerated because of the Depression and the commies everywhere, but it's a subtle preview of things to come. It isn't there yet, though, and so I almost like it. I like it for what it could have been. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 04, 2024 09:38 AM (HnUIn) 68

Talk about paranoid conspiracy theorists! On MSNBC's The Weekend on Sunday morning, leftist historian Michael Beschloss claimed the "chances are very large" that in October 2024, i.e., just before the election, Putin, China, Erdogan, etc. are "going to make a big effort to make trouble and chaos to make Joe Biden look bad."
Beschloss imagined the proverbial "independent women in the Philadelphia suburbs" saying that despite Trump making their "skin crawl," they would vote for him anyhow since Biden "has lost control." Hilariously, Beschloss blamed people's support for Trump on . . . schools! He declared that schools have stopped teaching civics, or much of history or social studies, so people haven't learned the difference between democracy and dictatorship! "Section 5 The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article." Section 3 of the Amendment likewise restricts state au-
tonomy, but through different means. It was designed to help ensure an enduring Union by preventing former Con- federates from returning to power in the aftermath of the Civil War. See, e.g., Cong. Globe, 39th Cong., 1st Sess., 2544 (1866) (statement of Rep. Stevens, warning that with- out appropriate constitutional reforms “yelling secession- ists and hissing copperheads” would take seats in the House); id., at 2768 (statement of Sen. Howard, lamenting prospect of a “State Legislature . . . made up entirely of dis- loyal elements” absent a disqualification provision). Sec- tion 3 aimed to prevent such a resurgence by barring from office “those who, having once taken an oath to support the Constitution of the United States, afterward went into re- bellion against the Government of the United States.” Cong. Globe, 41st Cong., 1st Sess., 626 (1869) (statement of Sen. Trumbull). Posted by: SMOD at March 04, 2024 10:20 AM (RHGPo) 291

Which is a stupid argument because simply put, the 14th's explicit language grants only Congress the power to punish by removal from the ballot for insurrection and the power to remove that punishment. Not courts. It was never otherwise including Scotus having the right to rule on whether candidates can be on the ballot--no such power is given to Scotus or other courts and furthermore, it has nothing to do with the time, place, and manner, reservation for states to conduct federal elections for offices. It was never otherwise including Scotus having the right to rule on whether candidates can be on the ballot--no such power is given to Scotus or other courts and furthermore, it has nothing to do with the time, place, and manner, reservation for states to conduct federal elections for offices. Posted by: RedMindBlueState Nope, the 14th is out of play for their justification and the Supremacy Clause prevents a state from deciding de facto itself that it can ban a candidate from state ballots. BTW, Lincoln's 1860 election was the last time that happened and arguably, states are now bound by both the 14th and 15th amendments protecting a candidate's right to run as long as they comply with ordinary filing dates, petitions, etc. within the meaning of time, place, and manner restrictions left to the states for federal elections. The White Factory
Katherine Schmidt Holy smokes, this caused my brain cells to buzz. I am a sucker for American painters who embrace American scenes. This bias comes from years of looking at America through a camera lens. The saturated colors, the distortions, the 20th century cues (telephone poles) all conspire to tell something about an energetic forward looking people that wear their bucolic "American corn" (Schmidt's phrase) in the same moment. I looked at some of her other works. What I saw of her work from the early 1920s was nothing to get riled up over and then *boom* she paints the White Factory. How does that happen? It just does. Would hang. Posted by: lost in space at March 04, 2024 10:35 AM (DbPG1) 391

I don't see it as a win for "Trump". I see it as a win for the Constitution and the people. In the end this is about power and Democrats blatant attempt to corrupt our rights and indefinitely hold tyrannical power over the citizens. They cannot win fairly at the ballot box, ergo they've decided to subvert the system and weaponize government against the people. This is precisely what the anti federalists feared, and why our constitution was written and amended in the manner it was. Today "we the people" took back a little bit of that power.

In part, I think one of the things that got the leftists on the court upset for their concurrence is that by a majority declaring that the presidency was not an 'office' under the terms of the 14th, it undercuts any attempt to raise the emolument clause and several other Lawfare expeditions used to go after Trump in his first term. Congratulations to Seth Tillmand and Josh Blackman for persuading a majority of the court to their definition.

The SC, taken as a whole has *one* overriding goal: preservation and extension of its own power, by virtue of preserving and extending the power of its parent organization, the federal government. Forget the Constitution, forget the people, forget the country. That has always been the source of their harebrained reasoning on virtually every issue, for hundreds of years, with a paltry few exceptions.
I'll buy that Thomas voted this way on principle. For the other 8 to go along (including even the repulsive John Roberts) means they perceive the threat to federal power from squashing Trump is greater than the threat of letting him run unimpeded by the Court. That's all there is to it. If they perceived advantage in upholding the decision, it would have been 8-1 in the other direction. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at March 04, 2024 10:38 AM (0FoWg) 404

Currently there is no statute allowing such and Congress would have to pass a new one. Due process is probably coming up at bat in the NY travesty cases of seizing Trump's assets and his joke of a libel trial. BTW, a Canadian government minister defending the new precrime bill they’re trying to pass said it’s important to defend democracy from people who’ve learned things online.

The White Factory, Katherine Schmidt. It's ok but:
Wikipedia, in part: The White Factory (Polish: Biała Fabryka) is the classicist building in Łódź, Poland, constructed in 1835–1839 to host a textile factory which belonged to Ludwik Geyer. It currently hosts the Central Museum of Textiles and Folk Dance Ensemble "HARNAM". It is considered a fine example of early industrial architecture in Łódź.[1] The building is located at the southern end of Piotrkowska Street, south of the city center. UK Guardian, Sept. '23 - The White Factory review – Holocaust drama raises troubling questions about today’s tyrants, Marylebone theatre, London Set in a Polish ghetto, Dmitry Glukhovsky’s superb play explores the terrible choices made by people under occupation. Wouldn't hang but it did make me do some research that led to finding very interesting info. Thanks. Posted by: L - We're done for now. I am now looking forward to seeing how the Communists running New Mexico handle their pending version of the Colorado case. Being Communists, I would not be surprised to seem them conclude, because the ruling didn't specifically state, "and the case also bars New Mexico's pending law suit," to proceed as if this ruling doesn't apply to them.

Dr. François Gigot de la Peyronie (1678-1747) trained at Montpellier Medical school and at the Hospital du Charite in Paris under Dr. Mareschal and helped to reorganize surgery schools and banned barbers from doing surgery. He was the personal doc for King Louis XV. He also contributed to the medical school back in Montpellier where he lectured before going back to Paris. I have no idea how surgeons were able to do anything without the "modern" luxuries of anesthesia and antibiotics and radiology. Had to be very brave and not squeamish and give your ideas of pathophysiology your best guess.
