87 Oh: 'Not On View' means some 'collector' (cough money launderer) bought the thing and rather than stash it at their house they 'loan' it to a 'museum' that then doesn't even display it. So it's in secure storage for free.
Also theoretically 'Art' isn't depreciated unless it is a permanent gift but there are ways around that. So this piece is very likely in some 'museum' both in secure storage and depreciating for tax purposes until it's sold at private auction to some Chinese collector (money launderer).

89 I'm not crazy about all of Sloan's paintings but I like the energy and festive feel of this one. The adults quietly watching the animals and kids in their whirlwind activity, perhaps with nostalgia for their own youth, is very effective. DDG is not great. Never has been.

For an alternative to domestic Big Tech, try Qwant (France) or Yandex (Russia). Yandex has similar problems to Google when it comes to Russian politics, but outside of that it produces decent results and its image search is fairly sophisticated.

until they turned into Migas!

And they ate Breakfast Tacos until their bellies were fat and full.

149  In many ways, the opening of the solar system for exploration and settlement will do the same for human civilization as the opening of the New World did for the Old World, beginning after Columbus. For the next five hundred years the human race saw a burst of creativity and development unparalleled in history. The standard of living for all humans went from general poverty to grand wealth, and it did so in only a few generations.
---
I've long put forth the theory there are 3 things that increase the freedom and wealth of the populace: 1) more land, 2) better weapons, 3) better transportation.
I've not added technology, especially the internet, to that because the fundamental advantages of those 3-- they either allowed you to escape oppressive government or fight back against them.

Government is the destroyer of freedom and wealth.

165 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Americans 65 and older should get another dose of the updated COVID vaccine that became available in September — if at least four months has passed since their last shot.

“Most COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations last year were among people 65 years and older. An additional vaccine dose can provide added protection ... for those at highest risk,” CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen said in a statement.

I had my last Covid shot around Halloween. I thought I WAS getting the updated vaccine. I'm confused.

This is just to "boost" the latest (updated) vaccine as older adults (along with some having certain medical conditions) need "extra" to keep the protection going. (i.e., the shots are still not at an "annual only" stage yet for certain populations)

I expect it is the same as the current shot, so it's a matter of just getting another dose!

Had all the shots and then I caught it. Very mild case. Was in bed for 2 days, but not real sick. Did test positive for it. I’ll get the shot this week if anyway.

Biden physical surprise findings:

- He arrived with his stool sample already in his pants: The doctor appreciated the president's initiative.
- The suspicious mole on his arm turned out to just be melted chocolate ice cream: This was discovered when he licked it off mid-exam.
- There was a crayon up his nose that's been pressing on the frontal lobe of his brain this whole time: Well, that explains a lot!
- There's a tapeworm living in Biden's intestines that he nicknamed "Barack": Sounds about right.
- His lungs are half-filled with hair from young girls: Stop sniffing so hard, Joe!
- He's under the impression that his wife is a doctor: Poor guy.
- His carotid arteries are 98% blocked with chocolate chip ice cream: Two percent of blood reaching the brain - not bad.
- His cognitive ability is the best of any president in history: Wait a minute...
- There are currently three different types of dementia warring for supremacy in his brain: It's anybody's ball game!

231 It would have been very nice to live in Santa Fe in 1924. It would have been hard to get there; take a train to Albuquerque, I guess, and a car up to SF; or a train stop in Lamy, near SF, and a cab to town. (Oddly, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad line did not actually stop in SF.) But it would have been dry, and not crowded or expensive.

Of course, in the summers, you'd have had to deal with meeting Georgia O'Keeffe. Nothing I've read about her life suggests she was a beloved person, or even pleasant much of the time.

246 Threshing Floor, Santa Fe
John French Sloan

This is so lovely. Living in and having photographed all over New Mexico I have more than a passing interest in art that depicts the state. From my reading, mostly about photography, New Mexico, became something of a place of pilgrimage for artists in the 1920s to the 1940s with Santa Fe being the epicenter of their interest. The reasons for their interest are many but a significant part of it comes from the elevation, over 7,000 feet, and the clarity and color of the light that comes from that and the latitude. Then there is land, I often call it church and I mean it; there is a certain tangible spirituality to it. And finally the culture in this painting is still here even thought it has been transformed by a century of change. Mr Solan got right over the bulls eye of the spirit of my adopted home in this painting, especially those three elements I noted.

If you ever find yourself in Santa Fe I cannot encourage you enough to visit the State's art museum and the Georgia O'Keefe museum down the street.

Most certainly, I would hang this one.

256 Goats are pretty crappy animals to own. I never got attacked too much, because I was quick to beat them when they got uppity. But their quarrelsome nature is the least of it. They sharpen their horns on trees and kill them. They're too smart and good at escaping. When they do, they climb. Instinctively. On anything. Like cars, for instance. Cars you have to pay to repair. Plus, they crap nearly as much as cows and horses, but it's way stinkier, and they tend to do it in one place, so you end up with a cesspit you have to clear.

Goats sorta suck. I like 'em, but they're asshoe.

In '28 or '29, I think, Taos farther up in the mountains had a mysterious and still-unsolved murder case. A wheeler-dealer businessman was found dead in the house he was renting from a local socialite (who, oddly, was a friend of O'Keeffe's). The body had been beheaded, and the head was found in the next room, having been savaged by the dead man's dog. I can't recall if the authorities only guessed at his identity because the face had been chewed beyond recognition -- or if the face was clearly his.

278 n '28 or '29, I think, Taos farther up in the mountains had a mysterious and still-unsolved murder case.

281 . . . New Mexico, became something of a place of pilgrimage for artists in the 1920s to the 1940s with Santa Fe being the epicenter of their interest. The reasons for their interest are many but a significant part of it comes from the elevation, over 7,000 feet, and the clarity and color of the light that comes from that and the latitude. Then there is land, I often call it church and I mean it; there is a certain tangible spirituality to it. . . .
If you ever find yourself in Santa Fe I cannot encourage you enough to visit the State's art museum and the Georgia O'Keefe museum down the street.

The current state of New Mexican Native American art is there is wampum stuff and then there is the great stuff. Santa Fe has multi day art festival for their work and I must say it a lot of fun and kind of tedious at the same time. The really great work is found by going the various Pueblos when they have a public celebrations. The pottery, jewelry, and weaving work has a set style - you don't expect to see Andy Warhol - and it is pretty great when done by a master. There are a lot of masters here. You really need to know what your buying. The historical pieces, well, those are long gone, and if you find one you are going to pay dearly for one. I own 3 small paintings done by an Acoma pueblo member of his Grandfather who was a Shaman in the 1920s. This painter only discovered that history by talking to some guy from the Smithsonian who knew the work the Grandfather had done at the time.

It's folklore, part of the area.

++++
All about the network, and out-of-network coverage.

Generally - though as you say, research it carefully and talk to people - the more "extras" there are, the worse the network and availability. "We pay for your sneakers" usually means, "there's one doctor fifty miles away" or similar.

If the network is good where you live and out-of-network emergencies are okay, it can increase access. Doctors who don't want a Medicare patient may well be just fine with a UHC patient. From what I can tell, the *real* advantage to Advantage is access to doctors who might not want new Medicare patients.

"tour" - dour, your, tour
"tower" - flour, hour, our (although I say it like "Are Father" when praying), sour
"ore" - four, pour

I'm sure it mostly has to do with which language we borrowed the word from.

What is "faxed"?

Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at February 29, 2024 10:56 AM (bo7UB)

399 Ha! No, this was Mabel Dodge Luhan (or Lujan). I think that last name survives to this day in NM. She knew all sorts of famous artists like Gertrude Stein, Picasso, D.H. Lawrence, Willa Cather, and Aldous Huxley. Also Margaret Sanger, Walter Lippman, and John Reed, so I guess we have a pretty good idea about her political bent.

Yes, but could she arch one eyebrow like a pro?

401 I read up on that once! Most famous unsolved murder in Santa Fe history. As I recall, the biggest problem wasn't that they didn't have suspects, but rather that EVEYRONE who knew him was a suspect, because they all hated him. Including local law enforcement officials.

404 Can you imagine anyone daring to say, back in the 1950's, "ok if you take this new polio vaccine you'll still get polio, but it won't be as bad a case of polio as you might have gotten."

The thing is back in the 50's no one talked about getting polio from the vaccine. I got polio from the vaccine but no one would admit it. I finally got my Mom to tell me when I was in college when I had finally gotten over the physical problems and she was glad and finally spilled the beans.

I had already figured it out but neither of my parents would acknowledge it.

Ehh. The government told tens of thousands of soldiers "lay down in this ditch and then when you see a bright light stand up and walk toward it."

There was a leak from the DoD in 2021 that said the clot shot doesn't do anything positive.

So...the government has basically known from the beginning that there was no reason for anyone to take it.

And keep in mind the whole idea behind the mandates was NOT that if you take the shots you get a lesser COVID experience...it was that you can neither get nor spread COVID.

431 I don't know what the fascination is with gel pens. They leak and stain clothing, and they smear no matter how long it's been since you wrote.

I use fancy pens these days, with a hard cap. Cheaper in the long run than throwing out pants with the stain of the sins of Cain on them.

Gel pens require a lot less effort to write with, and the old ball points can blob and stain your pocket, too.
