Trump: Well Sure I'm Considering the Meatball for Vice President

People say he can't pick DeSantis, because DeSantis and Trump both live in Florida, and the Constitution say the VP and president must have different states as their abodes.

But Trump can just change his main legal address, if he likes. DeSantis can't because he's governor of Florida, but Trump could just claim that, say, Virginia is his new home. Buy a house, get mail delivered there, bing-bing-bong.

Obviously Trump could just make his second home his legal residence -- New York City-- but New York is such a toxic environment right now, I would not advise Trump to give that state of lunatics any more jurisdiction over him than they have now.

Democrats have routinely demonstrated that these residence requirements are paper requirements only. They routinely run for office in states while actually living in DC or the suburbs around DC.

Anyway, here's his shortlist:

Former President Trump indicated that at least a half a dozen contenders -- including three former rivals for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination -- are on his shortlist for running mate.

The commanding frontrunner for the GOP nomination had plenty of praise for one of those potential candidates who joined Trump at Fox News town hall on Tuesday in this upstate South Carolina city.

During the program, which ran on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle," Trump was asked about half a dozen potential running mate choices: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, multimillionaire biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida, and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, a Democrat turned independent.

"Are they all on your shortlist?" host Laura Ingraham asked the former president.

"They are," Trump answered. "Honestly, all of those people are good. They're all good, they're all solid."

Even DeSanctimonious?! The gay adulterer groomer who shut down Florida against Trump's demands?!

Let's just say I'm in favor of DeSantis having a major role in running the American government.

MAKE AMERICA FLORIDA AGAIN!

I do think there's a high-level job for DS in a Trump admin. AG or Sec'y of State or something like that. I think DS could do more good in that capacity than in the non-entity VP role.

27 Considering liberals have senators who represent states they don't live in, I think he should be able to get around that problem, but then again there are a lot of laws that only apply to Trump.

I like the pick of DeSantis, but how many more views does Ron Gerry him in important areas? There was talk of Zeldin, who i thought could be good because it may bring some different voters in. Even maybe Youngkin could work. But im not sure what other choices there are, could be some left field ones.

There's nothing that says the president and VP can't be from the same state. It's just the electors in a given state can't vote for both POTUS and VP from their own state.

It would mean in this case that Florida's electors couldn't cast ballots for both of them at the same time. This would not be the that bad for a small state, but Florida is a key state, and you could have some weird situation where say Trump won the EC, but DeSantis did not, and threw the VP election to the Senate.

Having a female and/or minority running mate would absolutely trigger the worst racist/misogynist impulses of the Democrats-- look at how they treated Palin.

If they're ready for it (as McCain/Palin absolutely was not), it could be fantastic. Could peel off a *lot* of fence-sitters or nominally (D)-voters. They don't even have to switch sides-- just staying home could tip the balance.

The only way to avoid that as a Trump surrogate is to take a job that he can't fire you from. And vice president is the only one.

There’s no law or regulation against a president and vice president of the United States being from the same state. The reason why some people mistakenly believe such a prohibition exists comes down to a particular aspect of the Electoral College system laid out in Article II of the U.S. Constitution.

Article II states: “The electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves.”

No, the Constitution says that a VP or POTUS must be from a different state than the state's electors. So, it would only actually effect one state if both VP and POTUS were from the same state and would only effect one office (either POTUS or VP).

In other words, FL electors can't vote for both Trump and DeSantis for Pres and VP - they'd have to chose to vote for one or the other, but not both.

VP usually requires some pretty deep vetting after several disasters. Dan Quayle was one back when Vietnam mattered and the Dems had Geraldine Ferraro whose hubbies real estate career intersected with mobsters. Palin had the star power to overshine hideous John McCain and was backstabbed but really was too green a pol and DC.

447 Note - this is not meant as a criticism of our host -

but too many people let these newsies set the agenda. Is DeSantis, or anyone, on Trump's shortlist? I don't know. He may or may not be at that point yet.

But the story is this - Ingraham named a bunch of people and asked Trump if they are all on the shortlist Trump said "they are" which I take to mean they may or may not be (not a political answer but rather a salesman's answer), and he also said they are all solid people.

Well, okay. What really is a short list anyway? Are there other people on this shortlist that Ingraham did NOT mention and if he picks them, does the world call him a big fat liar? What if they show up on the short list later - or one of these people drops off? What then? What if one or more of these people would never ever be his pick in a million years?

Eh. I can't get excited about this question or this answer. I don't think anyone expected Pence going into the 2016 convention, a lot of us applauded it (though those who were dubious of him after his action on the religious freedom restoration act were right!)

Posted by: blaster at February 21, 2024 03:40 PM (xhfG9)

448 First off - this would take serious discussion with the DeSantis team - which no one has heard about and surely would be leaked if it was ongoing.

Second, DeSantis would be expected or would have already campaigned for Trump and that hasn't happened.

Lastly, Trump has already indicated that he's picking Limp Dick Sen. Tim Scott, God help us all...I hope I am wrong but there it is.

I think DeSantis is the best choice on the merits, but from an election perspective I don't think he makes much sense. FL should go Trump anyhow, and I think the overlap of Trump/DeSantis voters is huge, which is why DeSantis had problems in the primary.

474 If the new Senate is controlled by Republicans (as expected), Trump having a Floridian running mate is not a problem. The Constitution doesn't say that the POTUS and VP can't both be from Florida, only that the Florida electors can't vote for two Floridians. So the Florida electors vote Trump for POTUS and a random non-Floridian Republican for VP. If Trump needs Florida to win then nobody has a majority for VP, and the Republican-controlled Senate chooses from the top two candidates.
