Tucker Carlson: America's 21st Century "America First Committee"

Tucker Carlson stuck his thumb in the mainstream media's eye, and we loved it! He is unafraid to say uncomfortable things, and he is certainly not a fan of the regulatory state or its cousin, the heavy-handed authoritarian state that we are rapidly approaching.

Except...his credulousness about Russia after experiencing a no-doubt carefully curated slice of Moscow life is simply embarrassing. 20% of Russians don't have indoor plumbing, but Carlson is gushing like a schoolgirl about the superiority of Russian grocery stores, and by extension their standard of living. He is "radicalized" now!

Hey Tucker! Those groceries were 25% what they cost in America? Okay, but Russians make less than 20% of what Americans make, so if you had done your elementary homework you would have suggested something quite different...that it is MORE expensive! But good old Tucker is on a "America Is Sh*t" kick, and relishes beating us about the head with that message. America is evil for supporting Israel (however tepidly) and not demanding a cease fire? Yes, America has lost its way with respect to our foreign policy. The quagmire of Ukraine is a perfect example. And our involvement in every dirty little war on the planet is extraordinarily expensive...in both treasure and blood...and we get very little in return. Well, the elites get their graft, but that's about it.

But supporting Israel is a good thing. They are the tip of the spear against militant Islam, and they are doing the work and spilling the blood that the West is unwilling to spend. Tarring every foreign involvement with the same brush is reflexive isolationism that is not productive in any way. America cannot withdraw completely from the world, lest we cede our trade routes to the Russians and the Chinese and the Indians. Is that in our long-term best interest?

A wiser analysis of our government's follies would find that we do have legitimate global interests that must be nurtured and protected. That does not mean having boots on the ground in 150 countries, many of which are our enemies who simply love our financial largesse. It does mean evaluating everything on its merits, rather than simply declaring that "America is evil! Emerson was correct when he said that "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines."

But Tucker seems to have lost sight of our global interests, having been subsumed in his increasingly paranoid view of America as the ultimate evil. Perhaps he should cast his gaze at the perpetrators of our mistakes, rather than praising Russia for its imaginary superiority.

News flash: Your government lies.

As for Israel, I think people miss the point by a mile, when they criticize Tucker for his position. The tipping point of that discussion, WHICH NEVER GETS DISCUSSED, is how much the U.S. should be funding the thing.

I think the number of dollars sent to Israel should be zero.

Others don't. But you get called all kinds of names when you hold my position, and Tucker's, which is tiresome and dishonest.

22 For the record, I'm not all in for Tucker. His lavish praise for Trump gets old fast. But I don't really understand why Tucker is getting so much hate for this. Also with the vending machine shopping carts that dominate Europe but not the US.

I understand the point he's making on food costs is sort of dumb, things are simply cheaper in poorer countries. You go down to Mexico and you can get a nice dinner for way less than it costs to the US. That doesn't mean their system is superior to ours.

I think he's crudely making the point that despite all the sanctions and global pressure to break Russia, they still enjoy a way lower cost of living that we do.

37 I am not saying Israel funding should be zero. I'm not saying anyone's funding should be zero. I think every country needs to be evaluated (including Israel) on a case by case basis. Does the country need help? Yes or No. Is the aid we give them just allow them to spend their money on other things of questionable value? (and remember this is a question we can ask if you are expecting us to write you a big fat check.)

I think Israel is one of those things that generates an emotional response. People disengage their reasoning when questions arise in light of things like 10/7 (or the past 30 years of fuckery we have done regarding their statehood and relations with their neighbors.)

Hell, the Israelis might be better off without us stirring their pot and hall monitoring them at every turn.

Given that it is now the explicit position of the U.S. government, that our funding this war is to bleed Russia dry, Tucker is letting people know... it's not working. It's not going to work.

Russia is a self-sustaining nation, unlike the U.S. They can keep this up forever, if they want to. And they'll just wait for us to lose interest, give up, and walk away. Which we will.

And for the past 8 years, they've used Putin/RussiaRussiaRussia as a scapegoat and justification for absolutely everything. Everything. So Tucker is actually putting a camera on it. And adding his own commentary, which you are free to agree or disagree with. My position is, the answer is always no.

Whether it's Israel, or every one of Israel's enemies, who we are also funding, every other nation on the planet, except this one.

We're a nation on the brink of collapse, and the "money" we send everywhere is another dollar not spent here, trying to keep this country from falling apart. And it's not the government's money, of course. It's ours, and our children's, and our children's children, and their children, and so on and so forth, for generations yet to come.. if we make it that far as a species.

55 Tucker is not a deep thinker. He is willing to voice a contrarian view, but typically from a common-sense perspective. When things are complex or nuanced, he force reduces the complexity into something simple that fits his worldview. He believes the military-industrial complex promotes wars that are not in America's best interests, so is susceptible to Russia's marketing of itself as civilized and reasonable.

I was thinking about this when I got up today. Heinlein was a numbers and logistics guy, and was pretty competent at it. I think that was part of his navy training, as well as engineering. The one thing he didn't know was the amount of food and goods that moved on the black market, which he couldn't see and was hidden on purpose.
Gorbachev had the fairly opaque joke "what is long and green and smells like sausage?" that no Americans could understand, and the answer was the trains. Moscovites traveled out of town to get black market meat they couldn't buy in the stores in Moscow because the prices were fixed and the supply was never good. The black market is a more open market and matches price to available quantities.
without that understanding, Heinlein was never going to get a good estimate to match the population with consumption.

72 Tucker is not a deep thinker.
Posted by: iandeal at February 18, 2024 12:17 PM (w0PR/)

Or, some things really aren't complex, or nuanced.

When he says he objects to foreign wars, because our government is stumbling its way into situations that pose an existential threat to himself and his family, that's not very complex or nuanced.

Seems pretty basic and clear to me. And those who want to make it complex or nuanced, he happens to think there's evil behind that. And I find that hard to argue with.

The point is that it was a centrally controlled economy with even more inefficiencies baked into the mix. Part of that was intentional because shortages hid the inflation that the Ruble was suffering, and part of that was because a centrally planned or command economy is always screwed up because there is little or no feedback through pricing and availability.

"wasted time" is pretty callous way of saying "the only way I can have meat for my kid and husband is to get gristle at the state store after standing in line for an hour, or going to buy in the country.
Black markets spring up because of screwed up markets due to government.

His "schtick," which is what really bothers the powers that be, is to put things out there, let people see for themselves.

It's the antithesis of the misinformation/malinformation game, and it isn't necessary to agree with everything said by anyone who is willing to do that.

95 As for Israel, I think people miss the point by a mile, when they criticize Tucker for his position. The tipping point of that discussion, WHICH NEVER GETS DISCUSSED, is how much the U.S. should be funding the thing.

Others don't. But you get called all kinds of names when you hold my position, and Tucker's, which is tiresome and dishonest.

I think it should be zero, but not for the typical reasons. We've discovered over the last 50 years or so that anything that takes money from the Feds inevitably comes under the control of the Feds. And DC as a whole does *not* have Israel's best interests at heart. Even when the President does, the State Department certainly doesn't, and the CIA doesn't, and a million other things don't.

When someone you approved of says something that disagrees with your opinion, the stupid thing is to shout that he has betrayed you and claim it was always a scam and nothing he ever says in the future will mean anything.

The smart thing to do is to figure out what he is actually saying, or at least identify what he said causes you to disagree. Is it factual? if so you can find a lot of supporting information and decide what is best fit for reality. Is it what it implies about you and what you hold important? Then you might reassess what your principles are and consider if they are holding up against contrary facts.

Just saying "he's a skank because he is wrong" is not a good look. Tautologies are always suspect, and very, very pre-enlightenment logic.

East Germany had the Konsum stores which were run by the state, essentially hard currency for western products. They were a legal black market, and run because East Germany desperately needed western currencies to buy needed stuff overseas. It encouraged East Germans to get remittances from their relatives in West Germany so they could buy stuff they needed.

137 Hey Tucker! Those groceries were 25% what they cost in America? Okay, but Russians make less than 20% of what Americans make, so if you had done your elementary homework you would have suggested something quite different...that it is MORE expensive!

That's not...exactly...how that works.

But I think the larger point here is that from comparative point of the US v Russia in 1991, or the media image of Russia in 2024, these vague comparisons should be impossible.

Taking the two parts of it:

When communism fell it fell in large measure because the American capitalist system was better in just about every way then the Soviet socialist system. So the argument the US is 5% better off now or even *only* 500% better off would astound an American of 1991 - how did we lose so much ground they would ask?!?!

And then in regards to the media in 2024 there are endless stories on how Russia is on its last legs with this war and will soon collapse and...that's just not true.

The marquee over the entrance to symphony hall, which usually is illuminated advertising the night's program, was dark.

Normally, the ticket takers merely scan your ticket and you walk in, but last night you had to go through metal detectors, and pass through a security checkpoint. We weren't stopped by the security people, but they were closely scrutinizing everyone coming in.

Why? The prominent internationally-known violinist is Israeli.

I believe our having tethered ourselves to this thing for as long as we have, has contributed to prolonging it. I don't think there's any real evidence to the contrary.

But I get that this is personal for a lot of people, in ways it's not personal to me. So when I say I'm for zero funding for Israel, I'm also for zero funding of everywhere else on the globe. I expect if we did that, Israel would be much better off, in the long run.

New development in the last few hours: *Everyone* has given up on any more negotiations with Hamas; even Egypt has said they see no point in talking to Hamas directly anymore. Breaking point appears to have been yesterday when Netanyahu offered to spare Rafah from a direct assault in exchange for all the hostages and a cease fire, and Hamas demanded that Israel turn ALL of Gaza back over to them. And with that, negotiations are finally over for good, and Israel has said they will attempt to relocate the civilians, but they are going into Rafah very soon now.

Which, for those who listened to Tucker's brief comments the same day, he readily admitted. He said every time he tried to interject, Pootin went right back to it, and wouldn't let Tucker turn the subject.

He said it was frustrating, but ultimately he didn't think he could do anything about it.

207 I think Tucker saw how corrupt and antagonistic the GOPe is and overcorrected. There is a middle ground between putting troops in every hotspot and isolationism.
We should concentrate on protecting sea lanes and long term friends (Israel, Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan even Europe). Of course, they should contribute more to their own defense (Europe).
We should neither advance (add Ukraine to NATO) nor retreat (kick out anyone out except Turkey).
Posted by: Dr. Claw at February 18, 2024 01:09 PM (roH4R)

That's an opinion. I'm of the opinion we should have no military presence anywhere else on the globe, other than at our own borders. Is that an overcorrection? Sure, but I believe an overcorrection is absolutely necessary.

215 Here is the problem. HOW MUCH IS BUILT INTO our pricing because of artificial higher costs of energy (when we can be self sufficient, and we have government initiated Inflation because of out of CONTROL Spending)? How about theft? I heard one talking head, said of course it's clean and the market is filled with great products because it was Moscow, and that's where the richer people live. WELL I live in a rich town also. Its called NYC. I will not travel on the subways, I rarely use ANY public transport. Besides the smell of piss and shit, its the possibility I will be assaulted or killed doing so. Did Putin CREATE a Potemkin village in the middle of Moscow? I don't think so... ALSO why is our cost of LIVING so high in the country, its self inflicted. I would rather have an outhouse than walk through one in the middle of NYC. I am NO Putin lover, my family ESCAPED the USSR to come to America. The thought of Putin being in power until 2036 is just as disgusting a THOUGHT as Brandon having one more term. It WASN'T the America first people overheard telling Medvedev he needs 'space' on missile defense, Obama: This is my last election…After my election I have more flexibility.

You want to get bent about TC interviewing Putin and asking him polite questions (like he had any choice?), okay. Hes in a foreign land. The peer-reviewed study, published in the JESEE journal on Feb. 15, looked at urine samples from American citizens to determine their exposure to chlormequat chloride—a plant growth chemical. Exposure to the chemical can result in lower fertility and harm developing fetuses even at doses below acceptable levels set by regulators. Researchers detected chlormequat in 80 percent of urine samples collected between 2017 and 2023, with “a significant increase in concentrations for samples from 2023.”

278 The chemical was detected in “92 percent of oat-based foods purchased in May 2023, including Quaker Oats and Cheerios,” said the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which conducted the study.
Out of 25 conventional oat products tested, 23 had “detectable levels” of chlormequat. One in eight organic oat products had the chemical, while two in nine wheat products had low concentrations of chlormequat.

280 When Obama first got into office we were told Russia was the tits and we should build more bridges to them. Then they somehow morphed into the enemy and now Putin is worse than Hitler. What changed?

The narrative changed and that's all. I thought Tucker's interview of Putin was great. I got to hear what Putin thinks. I don't need Tucker or anyone else to interpret his words and tell me what to think.

Similarly, I support Israel. Doesn't mean I have to agree with everything they do or that they are above criticism and supporting them doesn't mean an endless flow of our tax dollars either. If I can criticize my own government and hold them accountable for spending I can sure as hell hold accountable a foreign government spending our tax dollars.

292 According to a recent study, four in five Americans tested positive for an agricultural chemical found in several wheat and oat products, including brands like Cheerios and Quaker Oats.

The media has been telling us since the start of the war that Russia was on the verge of financial ruin. It was always a lie. Russia has been extremely well during the war selling their oil at record prices.

I saw some minor journalist do a walkthrough of a grocery store in Russia about a year ago and the video was very similar. The only striking thing about the videos is nothing is striking. They average person is not in financial distress anymore than they were before the war and the stores are not running out of food as the rest of the media would have us believe.

323 Embrace the power of "and".
Back when Jon Stewart mocked Carlson for turning Crossfire into a shouting match, he was absolutely right. I had been watching the show for years, and that is exactly what it had degenerated into.
Sure, Stewart was "clown face on, clown face off" with no credibility himself - except in identifying a fellow clown.
But for too many, Carlson was their clown, so how dare the other guy's clown call him out? Worse, how dare he make it clear that they were trained seals clapping for their own clown, ala Hoffer's "The True Believer".
When Carlson started on Fox, he played the same game of talking over his "guests", but again, they supported the wrong things so everybody cheered when Carlson did it.
Carlson's version of the Funny Faces Game was on full display in the Putin interview, with him constantly mugging for the camera in astonishment like typical Stewart on The Daily Show.
Both of them are nothing but entertainers, playing a role for money.
It is not the Carlson has jumped any shark; it is that people are starting to recognize how they fell for his shtick, much the way they realized what Conservative, Inc. was when Trump showed up.

Our GDP numbers are fake. Russia has massively out produced the US and NATO in artillery shells to the point that Ukraine is losing badly. Real wealth is in what finished goods you can produce and Russia real economy is obviously larger than ours when it comes to things that mater like the ability to build weapons of war. 334 Saw an old interview with Richard Nixon (the ultimate in political pragmatism/realism) where he noted that Israel itself was not essential to American security concerns but that the American people would support them regardless because of a sentimental attachment.

There is some truth to that depending on where you place radical Islam in the hierarchy of foreign threats. The interview was obvious pre 9/11/01 so Dick obviously didn't have that to add to his assessment.

Israel is important as America's eyes, ears and whip hand in that part of the world but beyond that less so. I'm inclined to support them regardless of where they fall in terms of usefulness.

As for Tucker I'd say one of the great things about him is that he isn't telling anyone what to think. He's about opening up the conversation and letting it go from there.

342 I had no respect for Tucker in his previous incarnations on MSNBC and CNN, and neither did Rush Limbaugh, who often referred to him as Chatsworth Osborne III (a rich kid doofus from the old Dobie Gillis TV show).

It was a different story when Carlson came to Fox. Hard-core lefties, probably expecting the same milquetoast Tucker from his previous shows, readily agreed to appear on his program. Carlson engaged them in debate, ripping then into shreds with his intellect and wit. It was electrifying TV, and Tucker finally became a media sensation.

After a few months, though, the supply of meaty targets dried up because the lefties caught on to Tucker's gambit. He had won his chops, though, and continued to put on a good show.

But eventually Russia and Putin became recfurring topics, and Tucker took an inexplicably soft approach to both. It bothered me greatly, especially since he was so insightful on most other subjects.

Tucker's was one of the very few shows I DVR'ed, and it got to the point where I would fast-forward through segments when he would begin praising Putin or have an Russian apologist as a guest. I just couldn't understand Tucker's affection or respect for the thug.

Posted by: outside adjitator at February 18, 2024 10:33 PM (Qoa6L)

343 (Cont. from 342)
Anyway, I respected Tucker's isolationism at first because I feared America was spreading itself too thin. Hell, I though invading Iraq was a terrible idea before it took place, and the occupation was a mismanaged nightmare.

Still, I think he has taken his America First attitude way too far. Of course, America's well-being is my top priority, but we're a global power. As a result, events and people beyond our borders often have important national consequences.

Support for Israel at this time is essential for obvious reasons. But while many conservatives have turned against aid for Ukraine, I'm all in for arming the Ukes. While I have no fear a triumphant Putin would set his sights on NATO if he took Kiev, abandoning yet another ally would only embolden Xi, the ayatollahs and other bad actors. Don't send any U.S. troops there, but give Ukraine the weapons it needs. (Just, for God's sake, keep close tabs on the aid so it goes to the people and the war effort, not into some corrupt a-hole's pocket.)

347 @ 15 Agree 100%.

Sure CBD, you’ve been a fool supporting the Biden Administration’s proxy war in Ukraine since the beginning.

These people who claim that Reagan would have supported the Ukrainians the way Biden has are off their meds. They are more demented by Biden.

In the meantime, CBD; you and Ace can take your ridiculous hardon for the Florida Meatball on stilts and jo each other.

348 America is on a horrible path lately. The mere fact that Tucker is pointing it out is not a crime. We need people with balls unlike yourself. Go ahead vote for biden. Why not? We're screwed anyway.

349 Our elites don't understand Russia or Putin, nor do they want ordinary Americans to understand either. I have been there and speak Russian, so I have seen the local conditions and don't have to wait for voiceover translation (and I have seen other videos of Putin speeches and comments -- whatever you think of him, he is adept at thinking and speaking on his feet).

Putin is a Machiavellian ruler who would be absolutely typical in most any era of European history. It is only since WWI that Europeans stopped unashamedly defending their own nation, culture, and traditions above other nations', and promoting imperial expansion of same. Putin says the same basic things in the same basic language as British, French, and German governments did from e.g. the 12th century all through the 19th. He is Russian, so long-winded historical digressions and explanations are culturally normal. The point of his history lesson is to justify nationalist paternalism which was a part of the Russian mindset since long before Putin.

Tucker obviously was unprepared for this and couldn't turn it back around to a conventional MSM 'gotcha' interview. But it's a better interview because he didn't.

350 Postscript to the above:

While WWI marked the sea-change wherein European nations lost faith in their culture, WWII put a stake through it (as the ensuing independence movements proved). But then Americans themselves picked up the habit from 1945 to about 1968. Reagan's 'we win, they lose' and 'evil empire' talk was scandalous to all the 1980s goodthinkers because it was anachronistic even then.

Sometime between 1991 and 2008, America turned away from promoting our culture and our elites started pumping globohomo propaganda to the whole world. This is stirring up worldwide animosity against us and leading us into failure and disaster. But it the new religion of our elites and so they do it anyway.
