23 Evening and morning to all the satellites in space and beyond! How's the weather at Titan Station tonight?

Went for my walk/run, and cut it short when I spied what looked like a drug deal going down about three blocks from my back gate. I don't *know* it was a drug deal, but why else would two Nissan Altimas with 20" chrome rims be sitting at a street corner at 3:15 am, with the drivers standing in conversation and looking furtively over their shoulders . . .?

Obilgatory: I need to get out of here.

That story about the tiny, pea-sized frog, which is called a "flea toad" got me interested in the proper distinction between "frog" and "toad".

Apparently there is no real distinction between a frog and toad according the The Science (TM), other than you can say that a toad is type of frog. All toads are frogs, but not all frogs are toads. The toad thing is more a "folk taxonomy" as opposed to a proper "The Science" taxonomy.

My late father used to call such a thing a "toad frog". He was right, then. A toad is a sub-type of frog. So "toad frog" would not be incorrect.

This migration shit is insane. I'm in Aldi's yesterday and some guy who looks like the spitting image of the 70's Unibomber is in the store on his cellphone. Talking in arabic to someone while he continuously circles the store with his cart which only contains a single package of hamburger. Pants hanging down, barely covering the crack of his ass. Round and round he goes never stopping. Finally I check out after about 15 minutes of watching him, waiting for him to go a la snackbar.

Returning the cart for my .25 he finally departs the store with his single package of hamburger, no bag. But diversity is our strength they told me, so shut up.

Posted by: Skip at February 16, 2024 05:39 AM (fwDg9)

That is how they have framed it. That's intentional.

Remember back in the 90s how those foolish people said that 'Hey, if someone lies cheats and steals, it informs everything they do- not just their 'personal life'? And we were told that someone could be a truly despicable person but because they were in the right party, it meant they were a sterling example of political rectitude? The two things were said to be completely separate and it was accepted.

So, how has that worked out?

52 On the Good Side Dept.: My apartment "management" actually came and replaced the fiberboard ceiling tile in my bathroom that has been missing for months. And the leak from upstairs has not recurred. Small steps, I guess.

From what I hear, the most recent possibility of a sale of the complex fell through -- because the current owners misrepresented the property. Something tells me that, much like our so-called leadership in DC, the owners here would be incapable of the intellectual effort required to earn Cs in eighth grade.

That is just...sad. Note they have the giant Valentine card, presumably from Joe to Jill. Note how Jill briskly walks out, turns for a second with a smile for the clicking of the picture, then briskly walks off, leaving Joe behind clueless.

He doesn't realize they'd already taken the picture and asks Jill if she wants to take a picture. "We already did..." Okay, and Joe then picks up his shuffling pace after her.

That's brutal, when you think about it.

When my daughter lived in Cherry Hill, NJ I was visiting her one time and strolled down the street to the 7-11. As I approached some swarthy dude came out and pulled out his cell phone and got in an angry conversation in arabic with someone. He was obviously employed there. I got back to my daughters and told her my radar went off and avoid the place.

I later found out from newspaper reporting that said employee was a member of the 'Fort Dix Six' who (then) AG Chris Christie put in jail for a conspiracy to attack Fort Dix. An angry arab is not a good thing.

SCOOP: Netanyahu told Secretary of State Blinken that a direct or indirect U.S. recognition of a Palestinian state "would be a prize for those who planned and orchestrated the Oct. 7 massacre."

Japan and the UK slipped into recession in Q4, says CNBC, and they expect Germany and France to do so this quarter. Kudlow said last night that the US might follow midyear. Unexpected!

I've been following a Twit/X account that tracks credit card data and it's all really bad. People have maxed out their credit cards and are only covering minimum payment and delinquent are beginning to soar.

Bidenomics be berry berry bad for a lot of people.

107 "SCOOP: Netanyahu told Secretary of State Blinken that a direct or indirect U.S. recognition of a Palestinian state "would be a prize for those who planned and orchestrated the Oct. 7 massacre."

And in a surprise development, Hamas has issued a statement in full support of the Israeli leaders statement.

110 Google suggests that owners of older Windows laptops should migrate to ChromeOS. (Tom's Hardware)

This would be a great idea - ChromeOS will run fine on hardware that Windows 11 would leave dead in a ditch - if it were not for the fact that Google is no more trustworthy than Microsoft and would have far more control over your data.

--

Did they address the part where the OS is fairly crappy and restrictive and feels like you're just using an oversized phone OS because you're mostly using an oversized phone OS, and anyone that needs a system to function beyond checking instagram and watching youtube ads ill be screwed?

I tried a chromebook once. I can see the appeal for consumption and selling ads to eyeballs. The very first thing that I attempted that was even vaguely PC-like was to print a document, and it - a new chromebook by a major manufacturer - told me it wasn't compatible with my newish laser printer. Comically, my android phone can print from that printer.

I couldn't accomplish anything of note with the chromebook beyond consumption of media and collaboration with other Google users (yay). I know they can't say Linux, but that's the real answer.

I saw Blinken's name on some chart which identified him as Jewish.

Wiki: Blinken was born on April 16, 1962, in Yonkers, New York, to Jewish parents.

Gotta run that through AI to figure that out.

116 Only three of the 17 agencies that form our intelligence community agreed with the CIA’s conclusion that Russia initiated operations to ensure a Trump win.

In Russiagate, the bugging and spying was done with approval of whole institutions, including the CIA, FBI, and the intelligence services of numerous foreign allies, most notably Britain’s GCHQ. In fact, the worst activity was only pulled off when senior officials in bureaucracies like the Department of Justice overrode objections of rule-following subordinates.

I too tried a chromebook, a total waste of money as I couldn't *do* anything with it (have worked with/on computers since 197.

119 Hi! This is kind of off topic but I need some guidance from an established blog.
Is it hard to set up your own blog? I'm not very techincal
but I can figure things out pretty fast. I'm thinking about setting
up my own but I'm not sure where to start. Do you have any ideas or
suggestions? Cheers
