Debby Doberman Schultz asked how my cats are. About the same, healthy and difficult. Little Dagny the Siberian continues to be kind of standoffish (though she slept with me during my Tuesday nap). Stirling the big black is affectionate as usual and curls up with me for a part of each night.

16 You back in your house, out of the hotel, Bruce?

Posted by: m at February 15, 2024 04:40 AM (KpWJP)

17 Yay! I may have really expensive plumbing problem to fix. The condo unit below me has water leaking into their bathroom from a vent in the ceiling. If it's coming from my unit (highly likely), I'll be on the hook to pay for it. Complicated to explain. I've had this happen several times over the 20+ years I've lived here so I know what to expect and what is my responsibility.

Grumble grumble...

19 I worked in a condo conversion job years ago. The unit below had valuable art. Our unit had its bathrooms inside a lead pan with a drain. The kitchen sink area was set up the same way. Cheaper to do that than carry insurance.

79 Hi, have a question for The Horde:

We're looking to get a computer that will run windows. We will use it for Word, Adobe Acrobat Pro, some kind of graphics program to create files for laser cutters and CNC machines.

We will NOT use it for movies, streaming, games, etc. It'll be for our workshop tasks.

23 There's probably some gold to be mined in the train of thought that it's the commodification of labor, and the propensity for the "educated" to sneer at physical labor of any kind, that leads to the backwards and degenerate thinking they push out of their faces with respect to wages, labor, fairness, etc etc etc.

To them, flipping a burger or digging a trench is just dumb, fungible busy-work that any cretin or cripple or robot could do.

In reality, the uptalking Zoom-borne dunces with their Masters of Current Thing Studies would fail miserably at either of those jobs and flame out in a week or two. Every job takes skill of some kind. Every job one can learn to do better, and get paid better to do it.

Posted by: m at February 15, 2024 04:51 AM (KpWJP)

27 Also consider that flipping a burger or digging a trench are jobs governed by literal rafts of red tape and regulation. Safety rules. Environmental restrictions. Gotta monitor all your temperatures lest someone catch an illness. Gotta watch your sidewall profile lest some excess silt accumulates down grade and threatens the habitat of the lesser greater spotted marsh skink.

But what regulations and restrictions are there for the credentialed class who straddle the world like colossi of erudition, creating all the regulations and restrictions everyone else must live by?

Why? Well, an E. European colleague asked me the other day about the 'odd cultural practice' in America of people loving bad music or bad art or bad movies, solely for it being 'BAD'. That the overwhelming majority of Americans will happily watch reruns of 'The A-Team' before they'll sit still for '2001'. And, notably, Jack Benny's gag was of him being a terrible classical violinist (which he wasn't at all!) and not a terrible banjo player.

I had not realized this kind of musical/artistic 'satire' doesn't really exist in Eastern Europe or mostly Europe in general.

I had a pair of needle-nosed that had squared-off flats behind the joint, right where you put your second finger. I pinched myself with those fucking things every single time I used them. I kept them for years because 'throwing away tools is morally wrong', and considered grinding that section away; but looked them over ane the design didn't allow that. Finally after probably 10 years I was near a river on a job and threw them in.

Posted by: pawn'

Actually, yes! There is a tradition of satirical polka, and the accordion is kind of a go-to for perceived satirical music. And I've known several serious audiophiles who avidly collected regional polka bands, and played them all the time for the camp value.
Weird Al Yankovic has been invited, specifically, to tour Europe several times and every time his concerts are poorly received: Euros stand around in bafflement at his 'bad music'. He does tour 'Europe' but it's the UK and a few places in Scandinavia, that's it.
The accordion is a legitimate cultural icon in most of Southern/Eastern Europe and The Balkans, so when someone pulls one out it's assumed to be a serious instrument and has no value as automatic satire as in USA. Here it's an automatic 'immigrant joke'.

91 I have several Polish-American polka bands on LP, local outfits that played Chicago halls and bowling alleys. And, now Wisconsin, so lots of polka here. I've known more than a few real 'music enthusiast snobs', like the horrible guys in High Fidelity, who loved local polka bands and would go see them all the time for the camp value; or so they said!

Still to this day one of the funniest things I have ever seen on TV was a Lawrence Welk show performance. It was 'Leavin' On a Jet Plane', performed by one of his perfect 'couples'... dressed in 1920s fashions and sitting in a prop biplane. Then the fog machine fired up to make fake 'clouds' but it was turned too high and for half the song the screen was entirely whited out, totally blank.
I cannot find this clip anywhere, and I have searched for years. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt for an hour.

102 Created by House investigators in 2019-2020, the Russian collusion binder included the many ways in which the intelligence community allegedly violated the law in surveilling Trump associates during the events of Russiagate. We know this was a partisan political attack—the latest nugget is that the CIA got the foreign intelligence services of the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand—The Five Eyes—involved in the collusion plot, which started well before the FBI’s July 2016 counterintelligence probe which was seen as the start of this circus.
