Those pods look like the ones for a Nespresso machine, a complete abomination of the process of making coffee. A hotel we stayed at has these "devices" instead of a Keurig or the other type of hotel coffeepots. The discharge from it tastes like the most vile instant coffee you can imagine. I made fried peppers and sausage a new way last night. Basically, you make fried peppers and sausage like always, since time immemorial, but before you add the cheese, when you stir in the fresh basil to wilt, you also add a quart of chicken stock and a couple cups orzo, and wait til the orzo sucks up all the stock, and *then* do the cheese.
It rocks. It kicks ass. But it's such a different product than the original that I'm just not sure I'm comfortable with it. Posted by: United's DEI Department at February 18, 2024 02:39 PM (0FoWg) 84

I forgot the details but I recall that decaf was """invented""" by an industrial shipping accident that somehow leeched out the caffeine in the beans, and rather than throw out the ruined cargo, the coffee company just palmed it off as "decaf" to the sallow, supine half-men who would later form the product's loyal but disreputable customer base.

Not only is this an admission that the state was targeting Trump specifically, which is illegal, but Hochul is saying that SHE determines which cases will be brought. Funny, I thought that was the job of the DA and judiciary. Posted by: Archimedes at February 18, 2024 02:53 PM (CsUN+) 109

My FWP:
Yesterday picked up my brand new pipe and stuffed it full of tobacco. When I tried to light it I found the airway was totally blocked. Upon inspection I found the drunken bog-trotter who had made it had left the section between the bowl and the stem blocked with glue and sawdust. Some vigorous application of the spike on my pipe knife (doesn't everyone have a pipe knife?) and I got the blockage cleared. May the Mick who made it be plagued with never-ending excessive foam in his pints of Guiness. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at February 18, 2024 02:54 PM (YRK4R) 111

I don't drink coffee at home. I didn't used to drink it at all. But then Hubbymayhem happened and I would, on rare occasions, drink a cup if we were out for breakfast.
Lately, Hubbymayhem and I have been having a weekly "date" of going out for breakfast and then doing our grocery shopping. I know, we're exciting. But for the last month or so I have had coffee every time. I add cream and sugar DON'T JUDGE ME and enjoy drinking it with the meal. Unrelated, my son turns the teevee on, and just leaves it on, whether he's watching or not. Lately he's been putting it on Freevee, which has ads.
Have I mentioned he's got a 37 IQ? Anyhoo, one of the ads is a woman's torso, covered in a girdle type thing, and they zoom in on the crotch. It's about the most cameltoed cameltoe I've ever seen on teevee. Good grief, I didn't realize until now that I want a girdle. Nay, need. Posted by: BurtTC at February 18, 2024 03:29 PM (GtZ7X) 195

I have a FWB. I've discovered The Kid (female) has been using the hot water in an incorrect way. It's an instant-on gas unit; but the kitchen faucet is a long run, and takes a while to warm up. So she's been leaving the faucet (single-handle) on Hot all the time and basically using the piping as a 'tank'. This means each time she runs water the unit fires up. But she only turns it on for a few seconds, as in her mind 'it uses less hot water'. I've demonstrated and explained this is not good for the unit, these 'micro-starts' of the flame, multiple times per day. This is not sinking in. I'm thinking the only real answer to this is either a serious brawl or installing a 2-1/2 gallon tank single-point tank electric for the kitchen faucet, which isn't a bad idea anyway...

Some things are not suited to some people. Instant-on hot water heaters are one of them. They are tricky to install, and require a re-think of how one uses hot water.
There is no tank! So many people cannot wrap their heads around this and it creates all kinds of problems. Posted by: LenNeal at February 18, 2024 03:45 PM (9yXr+) 217

Posted by: m' Nice Freudian slip, there, LenNeal. Run the unit as its designed." "But it uses more water!" "The water is not the issue, the unit is the issue, it costs wayyy more than the water." "But then the water is always cold and turning it on uses more gas!" "The UNIT IS CRAZY EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE. Use it sensibly." "But the water is always cold then!" "%$&(@#$!!!" I have a big electric hot water heater. It is apparently well insulated as the water is still very warm to hot if I turn it off for a couple of days.

I've seen multiple reviews of instant-on tankless hot water heaters and some people simply cannot have them. They must have a tank. They'll get The Green Ideas and put one in at great expense only to discover they absolutely hate it with the heat of a thousand suns and spend another fortune to rip it out and replace it with a tank.
It's not at all uncommon to find 'slightly used' tankless units for sale on eBay and Craigslist. Posted by: LenNeal at February 18, 2024 03:56 PM (9yXr+) 225

Posted by: G'rump928(c) fears the South Wind' The element in that tank will also heat the water in the pipes to a certain extent. A tankless does not. As soon as that flame goes off the water reverts to inflow temp. Some people flatly cannot deal with the delay, especially with a long run. I'm thinking a single-point tank in the kitchen. An electric goes about $150 and can hang right on the fucking wall. Which is where it will go as they require yearly service (anode replacement, cleaning) and no way am I burying it under the counter. Posted by: LenNeal at February 18, 2024 03:59 PM (9yXr+) 227

With the hot water thing, it's one thing to disagree with a family member or spouse about something subjective, like the color of the curtains or some shit, quite another to have some non-meeting-of-the-minds about something that is physics- and reality-based.
It's the reason my ex-wife blew up three cars. Posted by: LenNeal at February 18, 2024 04:04 PM (9yXr+) 238
A 2 1/2 gallon under sink heater is a good option - if - you have electric nearby. They come with a very short cord. But with such a short run hot water is almost instantaneous. At 1500 watts it might be problematic with a even a short duration load from a 1500 watt toaster running at the same time. Depends on how circuits are wired. My kitchen they unfortunately put everything on one branch. Was running 1500 watt toaster and 1500 watt grill/panini press recently and not so good. Down to the service panel for breaker reset. FWP.
