Report: The State Department Is Investigating Israel for "War Crimes"

The Biden Administration is reportedly investigating potential war crimes committed by Israel in Gaza, despite public claims to the contrary.

White House spokesman John Kirby told reporters on January 4th, "I'm not aware of any kind of formal assessment being done by the United States government to analyze the compliance with international law by our partner Israel."
Despite Kirby's statement, sources told the Huffington Post that the State Department is probing Israeli actions in Gaza that may have violated international law.
The revelation of these investigations highlights yet another disconnect between the Biden administration's public support for Israel's Gaza campaign and the awareness among foreign policy officials that the policy could be illegal and implicate U.S. officials in war crimes.

Indeed, Biden dispatched a "top advisor" to Michigan to tell Arabs in Michigan that Biden had "made missteps" in supporting our longtime ally Israel in its retributive war against the terrorist group Hamas.

One of President Biden's top advisers told fuming Arab and Muslim American community leaders in Michigan this week that the administration has made "missteps" in its support for Israel's war against Hamas terrorists in Gaza.
"We are very well aware that we have missteps in the course of responding to this crisis since Oct. 7," Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer said during a Thursday meeting in Dearborn, Mich., with Muslim and Arab Americans, including state and local Democratic elected officials, according to the New York Times.
"We have left a very damaging impression based on what has been a wholly inadequate public accounting for how much the president, the administration and the country values the lives of Palestinians," Finer added.
"And that began, frankly, pretty early in the conflict."
Finer was part of a White House delegation dispatched to Michigan ahead of the state's Feb. 27 Democratic presidential primary, in response to growing hostility toward Biden from Muslim and Arab Americans -- a sizable voting bloc in the Great Lake State -- over his support of Israel's war effort in the aftermath of last October's massacre of 1,200 people in the Jewish state.

An example of that is Chester Nimitz ordering unrestricted submarine warfare against Japan immediately after Pearl Harbor - Japan had attacked without warning, in defiance of international law, so unrestricted submarine warfare was allowed, despite the fact that it was normally prohibited.

When Germany declared war on the US, Germany was already waging unrestricted submarine warfare, so obviously it was appropriate for the US to respond in kind.

This has become somehow transmuted into the idea that "Western" states are utterly obliged to obey every nuance of international law, while non-Western states and quasi-states can completely ignore international law without consequence.

What isn't appreciated much outside of Israel is that the people in the southern Kibbutzim, and the young people at the ill fated Peace concert, were generally all of the group that strongly favored peaceful coexistence and reconciliation with the Palestinians. Many of the murdered were people who had worked with Palestinians for years.

Hamas didn't care, and probably didn't even realize, that with that attack they completely destroyed the political side in Israel that was most in favor of accomadating them. Those that weren't killed have now spat on those ideas forever.

I was in Israel near Jaffa in the early 2000s when there was some missile fire coming from the North. Gaza was about 30 miles to the south. I've had daily commutes shorter than both of them. And that is the "long" dimension of the country.

They can't coexist with Gaza anymore, there's too many Gazans and they can't be governed and produce little to nothing. Even separating out Hamas, they have to go somewhere else to learn to be human again.

I have talked a bit with some ordinary people on X who live in Israel and post there. As to how everyone is affected - he posted a video of he and a friend hiking in a beautiful spot in north central Israel a few days ago, and posted a video saying "this was kinda cool, here you can see the missile barrage coming in from Lebanon, and you can see all the Iron Dome interceptors coming up to engage them." Just an everyday ordinary thing now.

there was a video on X a few weeks back (and there have been many like this, but this one was particularly notable) where this man was holding this baby all wrapped in what looked like burial clothes, and he was wailing and moaning and howling and so were people around him, and then the cloth slipped off the face and it was hilariously obvious that he was holding a full sized plastic baby doll.

Forever is a long time. Israel was founded in the 40s to not forget what happened to them, but most of even the Israelis pretty much forgot before that day. As did the IDF who got humiliated and failed in their duty.

But yes, Hamas did care, because they wanted to get back to a day when they were feared instead of marginalized. Maybe they overdid it and will be wiped out as a result. But the PLO got a generations worth of do-overs fed by "international opinion"
