The Morning Report — 2/13/24

Good morning, kids. Went to bed early feeling very out of sorts and woke up with little improvement, so I'm going to shine the editorial and just leave you with links. Apologies in advance.

Hasta mañana.

    ABOVE THE FOLD, BREAKING, NOTEWORTHY

  • "In it he discusses his 8-year-old lawsuit in Texas challenging the constitutionality of taxpayer funds being used to pay the salaries of union officials who represent public employees unions. It's not even union dues paying the union leaders' salaries, it's taxpayer money. Not only has the lawsuit drug out for 8 years, but left wing judges in blue Texas counties have fined the plaintiffs for filing the suit!' (Hat tip to Buck Throckmoron-jjs0

  • "Indigenous knowledge" posits that native peoples possess hidden wisdom about the workings of the universe and has been widely dismissed by experts as pseudoscience. The proposed guidelines point to other "non-traditional modes of science," including "citizen science, community-engaged research, participatory science, and crowdsourcing." Including these methods is part of the agency's "support" for "equity, justice, and trust," the document states.

9 People argue that French is the language of the future. The reason they argue this is the population of Africa is exploding and so many people in Africa have is at least a second language. They say in a decade to French will be spoken by over 500 million people.

I like French I like studying French. As a hard-core conservative, right of Attila, the Hun, I enjoy that many on my side think Fritch is wimpy or uppity, or whatever. I would counter with the French foreign Legion, but also many other writers who say is the most militant of languages.

So many say, French is the language of the future because of the exploding African Baby boom.

I would counter with the fact that Africans hate the French more than they hate us. They are stupid in this, but that is the case even as we speak they are overthrowing French supported leaders. At most is the second or third language in Africa, it is, but how long will that last?

Everyone knows English is the language you need to know, the French themselves teach their students to an English level even on our side would dream of. Francis large but it’s not growing the French language is growing only in Africa.

13 But one of the worst things for Biden and funniest at the same time is how the second folder in a box with marked classified documents had Joe Biden's distinctive misspelling of Afghanistan, "Afganastan."

FUN FACT: Joe Biden doesn't know how to spell Afghanistan.

"Mr. Foreign Policy Expert" has been spelling it "Afganastan" since at least 1980.

22 I think in Africa, it will be English that grows more than French, justice, English is growing as the international language all over the globe. Not denying that fridge is huge in Africa, but it is clear the Africans hate the French more than us. I love the French language language I love studying it, But since the French themselves speak English way better than the average American will ever speak French, and Africans are turning against the French as a language, and a polity, My view is the French language will become an affectation and not a required way of speaking. This is not a good thing, but it is what I actually see.

Every other American says what you should learn in Spanish, but all those Americans never do it. There are some use for Spanish, but from what I have seen heads on right now, the average Spanish-speaking American has no interest in speaking, Spanish to a gringo.

Not sure what all this means but I think about languages a lot. We should spend the time improving our own English, reading our poems, and getting the last nth from our mother tongue.

I won’t follow my own advice. I will continue to study Spanish in French, but I do question the usefulness

And I do have strong positive feelings about Spanish. in some cases, Spanish makes sense is the one language you should learn in America outside of English. But in the real world what is it actually gonna do for you and is it better than studying in the other endeavor? All these are questions I’d love to hear someone else chime in on the subject.

30 The opinion of the Third Court of Appeal rubber-stamped the trial court’s rulings in all respects. The case will be argued before the Texas Supreme Court on February 21. Local 975 is asking the Texas Supreme Court to not only ignore—or negate—the no-gift clause of the state constitution, but also to uphold a plainly nonsensical ruling under the participation-friendly TCPA that unionized government employees in Texas have legal rights that trump those of taxpayers seeking to vindicate the Texas Constitution.

55 34, for sure, it is tired that every American high school students said Spanish with the language to take. How many of them learn the language to appoint where they could speak it?

There is a site on the web where you can look up what was the most spoken foreign language in the US the year you were born. Said another way which language was spoken natively in the US the year you’re born outside of English. I was born in 1970, and for that year the language was Italian. So much is changed so quickly I would guess we would all assume it was Spanish, but that was not the case.

There are arguments for Spanish for sure, as Biden has made clear that he will make Spanish native speakers 30 or 40% of the country. But if the language is useful to a native English speaker, that is another thing, for certain jobs for sure it is important. Medical jobs at the top maybe tree trimming also.

I’m not trying to be I think Spanish is valuable, and I actually appreciate the language and the culture of Spain and Mexico in someways. But it does seem that Spanish has been forced upon so many many young people who never learned it anyways, it all seems a bit of a waste. They say the Italian

76 One reason for the sharp decline is that China is running short of women of childbearing age, with "more than three million fewer than a year earlier," according to the WSJ.
    ____

One way to solve the problem would be through conquering neighbors and taking their women. Chinese are notoriously racist though, would a Chinese man have a child with a foreigner? I suspect the natural drive will overcome any ickyness factor and the probable second class status of their offspring.

79 Speaking about elderly incompetent POTUS's

    https://youtu.be/b5wfPlgKFh8

On SNL, Phil Hartmann portrayed Reagan as a buffoon in public, but an evil mastermind in private. Ronnie was actually a closet intellectual (a fan of Hayek ... not that Hayek, the other one).

Reagan dealt with Iran/Iraq by selling arms to both and then getting them into a shooting war with each other. He then used the profits from the Iran sales to fund anti-Communist rebels in Nicaragua which got him in trouble with Congress over Irangate.

Marine Colonel Oliver North ran the operation but in the Irangate Congressional hearings he said it was totally his own idea, thus shielding Reagan.

So Congress subpoenaed Fawn Hall, Ollie's secretary, to try to undermine Ollie's testimony. Draws dropped when this unknown walked into the Congressional hearings. She covered for her boss.

113 41, I believe you I’m sure what you said is exactly, correct. And I recall when people said our young people should learn Mandarin. no one mentioned it. A lot of educators realized that the Chinese would never let us in, no matter how we spoke, the language itself is very difficult, but the culture is 10 times worse, no matter what we do they will never let us in.

The same could be said about Japanese, what is actually achieved by studying so hard for so long to learn that language? Everyone has to do who they are not to use modern terms I’m not telling anyone what to care about.

And our own forefather studied foreign languages like Latin in French. There is something to be redeemed, simply about studying something. But if you look hard at languages, to me, it Hass to come down to French or Spanish. Both have value, but both can also be questioned particularly French. at least with Spanish you can speak to people who simply don’t know English and people who may be speaking around you depending on where you work. Is that a great reason to learn a foreign language? I don’t think so. You have to really love the language and really be all in for many many years. Most people

But the more I study these languages the more I question the thousands of hours spit doing so. Sure there are jobs where someone might hire me because I speak Spanish in addition to English. But in this country, you’re not gonna see that with French very often..

It’s a subject I think a lot about and I would be interested in other opinions. Because our language is not only the most dominant language in the world it is also the most beautiful the language of poetry and some of the greatest texts ever written. That is not excuse to not try to learn other languages, But at the same time, can we not improve our own and even if you’ve done that on a regular basis are there better pursuits for wealth and happiness than studying another language?

I just thought about this recently, but even if you studied for many years, would you not be at the level of sixth grader from the country? If they are studying English from the earliest stages, what exactly are you accomplishing other than standing out as a traveler?

I assume you're kidding. There has been a news blackout mostly. Most residents received $750 from the government and are still prevented from returning to their homes. And if their home is destroyed, their insurance company isn't allowed in to view in order to make the loss estimates to pay claims. And as far as I can tell, there hasn't been a full account of the missing, many of them children. Some of this is from reporting on X, so I don't know how much is verified true. Maybe it's nothing.

There are no human cashiers in the main (non commercial, non garden) exit any longer. Eight to ten humans no longer needed. Jobs gone.

I asked the customer service desk where the human was because I wanted to check out there and they told me and checked me out there. They said I'm not the only one, and that eventually it was going to be such an inconvenience to customer service that they'd be prohibited from doing it.

173 Nepal asks Russia to send back Nepalis recruited to fight in Ukraine and the bodies of those killed
BY BINAJ GURUBACHARYA; Updated 6:17 AM EST, January 25, 2024
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Nepal has asked Russia to send back hundreds of Nepali nationals who were recruited to fight against Ukraine and repatriate the bodies of those who died in the conflict, Nepal’s top diplomat said Thursday.

The Russian army is estimated to have recruited more than 200 Nepali nationals to fight in Ukraine and at least 14 of them have died there, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud said in an interview with The Associated Press.

“We have asked Russia to immediately stop the recruitment of Nepali nationals in their army, immediately return those who are already serving in the army, repatriate the bodies of those killed, and treat and return those who were wounded in the fighting,” Saud said.

Nepal is also seeking monetary compensation from Russia for the families of those Nepali nationals who were killed in the fighting, Saud said.

Now I just want to be away from crowds and traffic and refuse to pay for parking. Okay, if I lived within a couple blocks of a parade route, I might go. But I'm not going to battle for a parking space.

The last times I enjoyed going to an outdoor event were in my Colorado years, when I attended the Highlands Street Fair in NW Denver. Early June there is hot but pleasant in the shade, it was possible to find parking without a struggle, and the crowds were manageable. I suspect, from what YD, Joe Mannix, and others have said, once-beautiful Denver is now a hellhole.

In fairness, we've spent it over a couple of years so we've probably only dumped a third to a half of Ukraine's GDP into the country. Much less than that in cash. "His personal physician wrote a letter last year giving results oh his physical exam. The doctor wrote the President is fully capable of doing his job!"

But never a word about Joe's mental state behind closed doors and how many hours a day he ACTUALLY does work. No reporter has been invited to follow along with Joe for a day in the WH. Usually a POTUS SOP.

It is. Local newscasts vary by market, but all suck. I try to tune in once or twice per week in the morning just to keep abreast of the lies of the week. It's an exercise in head-shaking. My local affiliate is meh. It isn't based and it isn't totally in the tank for the hard-left (just mostly in the tank). I'm in a small market that is pretty conservative.

Once the local newscast finishes and it swaps over to the national morning show, it's like a train jumping off the tracks and smashing into your living room. It goes from a bunch of libs pretending to play it approximately straight to a bunch of Maoists beating you about the face and neck with the blunt end of the prog narrative. I refuse to watch the national morning show. The local news has some minimal value (traffic, weather, local stories with discernible biases that can be adjusted, etc.). The national morning show has zero value at best.

399 If you are going to do an indices based on the election, go with oil prices. Wall Street is dominated by hard-core leftists, that wasn’t the case back in the day, but it is the case now.

Wall Street used to be blue collar, Italians, and Irish men doing the actual trading and hard-core conservatives like Rick Santelli, and Larry Kudlow. Today it is hard left. They mocked the crap out of the guy who predicted 36,000 but now it’s at 38,000. I don’t expect any help from the stock market going into the election.

As a patriotic, American and consumer, I hope oil prices fall, but if one figure doom the Biden reelection, it has got to be oil not the stock market.

400 *Overall* prices are up 17.9 percent. If you leave out food and energy, that is "core inflation," you might be able to spin it to around 4-5 percent, which is still twice the Fed's goal of so-called "stable prices."

If you look at food and energy, which are the two things everyone buys, they have nearly doubled. Inflation is worst in the sectors that hit the poor the hardest.

Rail is getting dangerous. It used to take a crew of five with a caboose, and someone constantly monitoring for hot boxes from the rear cupola.

As far as I can tell, no one's been held to account for that debacle yet, probably because it would be a tacit admission of how badly federal government oversight has failed the rail industry.

477 The original Frasier had some of the wittiest scripts in TV history, that was what made it so great.

One of my favorite episodes, one I use as an example of great writing, is called "My breakfast with Niles" and has Niles and Frasier go to a coffee shop and have breakfast while they sit and talk. A couple other people stop by, but that's it - that's all that happens in this one. And it is one of the best episodes I've seen because the writing for that conversation is so incredibly good; something that most modern productions have completely forgotten.

    485 Should Biden Step Aside?
Plus: Trump sneers at NATO in South Carolina and serious Republicans keep retiring from the House.
    WILLIAM KRISTOL AND ANDREW EGGER

I’d prefer to get to it by denouncing Trump or by lambasting Republicans. But today I feel an obligation instead to grasp an unpleasant nettle: Joe Biden’s age.

President Biden is old. He seems frail. He’s running for another four-year term. Let’s be honest: It’s not obvious he’s up to that.

I’ve believed a vigorous primary competition would have presented risks, but also showcased an impressive next generation of Democrats...All it takes is for President Biden to choose not to run again. I still think Joe Biden should make this choice.

Power brokers would emerge, and to the extent that this gave the Democratic party establishment some influence over the nomination, that, too, might be to the good. As we have seen for the last three years, the Democratic establishment is fairly close to the center of American politics right now. In sum it would, I suspect, be an exciting and invigorating race that would culminate in an open, and perhaps multi-ballot, Democratic convention.

    And then came the Assumptions.
And the Assumptions were without form.
And the Plan was without substance.
And darkness was upon the face of the Workers.

And they spoke amongst themselves, saying:
"It is a crock of shit, and it stinketh."

And the workers went unto their Supervisors and said:
"It is a pail of dung, and none may abide the odor thereof."

And the Supervisors went unto their Managers, saying:
"It is a container of excrement, and it is very strong,
such that none may abide by it."

And the Managers went unto their Directors, saying:

This is correct. Taxes now are a system of punishment and reward. Child tax credits, etc. allow lottery winnings each year for people who don't pay anything, and people who do waste time and effort and worry to cross every t and dot every i in hopes of not being audited.

And now people transferring rent to roommates using online exchange systems like paypal are getting 1099s for things that have nothing to do with business, just any transactions over $600 total for the year.

Punitive to discourage activity. And it has worked.

555 It's a little disturbing how every single "cops and robbers" show revolves around the same arc: This guy's a criminal.

My favorite is how they're constantly breaking laws and hacking systems and such with nary a consequence and they arrest the bad guy using data they obtained illegally via hacking.

567 Every indigenous culture has some amount of knowledge that is indeed of benefit.

But that doesn't make the entire collection of 'The old ways' better than parts of another culture.

For example, the native way of driving thousands of head of buffalo over a cliff in order to gather maybe five days of good meat for the tribe, before spoilage set in was replaced by refrigeration and gunpowder.

569 What had George done when he asked that?
    --------
He banged a Portuguese cleaning-lady on his work desk.

George couldn't have sex for a time because his girlfriend had herpes or the like. Without being distracted by sex and his performance, his brain power was increasing, including learning Portuguese. He went stupid again after banging the cleaning-lady because smart-George calculated the odds of ever having that happen again, so he did her.

BTW, Elaine got stupider when she had to give up sex for the same time frame as George.

    >>Eh, with the way things are going nowadays, the plan is a late in the campaign switch like they did with Toricelli.

Perhaps, but unlike a corrupt state like NJ allowing the Torricelli Option, the constitution proscribes the succession process for President.

So unless the plan also includes kicking Kamala to the curb, she's got to be the Donk Presidential Candidate and someone else is the VP candidate.

A lot of movies are like that in a way.... you'll never see a laugh track in a movie, but they still have to be crafted in such a way that it's like the movie is screaming "LAUGH NOW" at you.

Ok, i say "craft", but.... you know.

579 I am not gonna totally trash left tracks because people want to laugh. But they say the actors have to see their lines and away where they space them for the left so the actual language they speak is extremely unnatural.

But if you want to go to deep, acting itself is a weird thing, but it’s something people have always appreciated. We could be going through a war, and all the worst atrocities imaginable, but we’ll still show up to a show about wars and atrocities. It is a human thing it’s just what we do.

582 566, it happens in pretty much every sitcom that lasts quite a few years. I guess that is a good thing. It’s a heartening thing that people go on with their lives. But there are a few sitcoms of the modern area that lasted many years where you didn’t have an actress who had that they were pregnant.

Not really. Joe could "decline" to run for another term and the DNC could put their favorite candidate on the ticket. Harris being VP for this term does not mean she is automatically the choice for 2024.
