ABC "News"/Ipsos Poll: 86% of Americans Say Biden is "Too Old" to be President

That's as much agreement on a political issue as you'll ever have.

Quick Hit:

A recent ABC News/Ipsos poll reveals that 86%--nearly all Americans--believe President Joe Biden, at 81, is too old for another term.

Key Details:

86% of Americans consider Biden too old for another term, with 62% expressing the same about Trump.

There is a notable partisan divide, with 73% of Democrats seeing Biden as too old, while only 35% of Republicans think the same about Trump.

The release of Special Counsel Robert Hur's report, which did not recommend charges against Biden but commented on his mental fitness, has intensified calls for invoking the 25th Amendment.

Americans show more trust in Trump over Biden on issues like immigration, the economy, and crime, but Biden leads on healthcare and climate change.

There are just some things that I don't get, like asking which presidential candidate would be better at handling healthcare.

I mean...what? Are people imagining presidents doing surgery? Is it really just, who will keep the existing healthcare system (which everyone seems to hate) going? I thought the healthcare system was fixed with the ACA?

The counter is that China is now exporting deflation as their internal economy and demand is flatlining---real estate was a much bigger part of their gdp growth than ours.

Posted by: Austin in TX at February 12, 2024 01:00 PM (l00bX)

It's a general indicator of how well informed the respondent is. For example, are they aware that the President has the absolute authority to declassify anything? Are they aware that the President has the authority to retain papers related to his Presidency after the end of that Presidency. Are they aware that Senators and Vice Presidents have neither if those.

Basically, it says that 41% of respondents are either stupid, uninformed, or have an utter disregard of the truth. A further 26% may have fallen into those categories or may have been unwilling to confirm their standings.

Betting many interviewed were too young to have experienced and paid for the healthcare insurance system pre-Obama. Either that or they are employed by Govt or Big Corp that covers most of the expense and offers a better coverage package.

Interview people over 45 (that's about the age one starts using said insurance) and that number reverses.

LA Times: Column: Biden’s memory is failing. So is Trump’s. The question is whose flaws are more dangerous. During the 2020 campaign, Trump publicly charged that Biden, then only 77, was suffering from “dementia.” The insult didn’t stick...

Trump, too, often appears to suffer from memory lapses.

He confused Nikki Haley, with Nancy Pelosi, the former Democratic speaker of the House. He referred to the president of Hungary as the president of Turkey.

Trump has glaring flaws beyond his memory problems. He is the undisputed king of presidential mendacity; the Washington Post has estimated that he made more than 30,000 false or misleading claims during his four years in the White House.

Several years ago, I asked Biden what strategy he relied on to bounce back from a gaffe.

“Own it,” he said. The question isn’t whose aging memory is sharper. It’s whose flaws are more dangerous.

The ACA accelerated the current dumpster fire that is US healthcare financing. Please note that I specify *financing*. ACA added a huge # of people to Medicaid, and added huge burdens on private medical practices, which in turn drove many MDs into the arms of big hospital systems. And it jacked up the cost of private medical insurance. It was a dream law for making Americans even more pissed off with their health coverage, costs, and desirous of the Big Government option for healthcare.

China is already HUGELY in debt (as are we) but they also have no SS system, so any investments they make are with funny money. Their lmoney supply is far higher than anything our Fed would countenance. That's why all those people invested in the RE bubble; they had nowhere else to go to prepare for retirement. 235 Trump has glaring flaws beyond his memory problems. He is the undisputed king of presidential mendacity; the Washington Post has estimated that he made more than 30,000 false or misleading claims during his four years in the White House.

Last time I looked into the "false" claims generally feel into the following categories

1) Jokes
2) Exaggerations
3) Statements where the FNM are the ones actually lying

The left will often pretend jokes are delivered seriously...remember the speech where Trump called on Putin to release Hillary's illegally scrubbed emails?

I guess #2 could be "lies" but...Trump is the only one that ever gets hit with that.

And frankly the FNM lies constantly so #3 is a large category...

236 LA Times: Column: Biden’s memory is failing. So is Trump’s. The question is whose flaws are more dangerous. During the 2020 campaign, Trump publicly charged that Biden, then only 77, was suffering from “dementia.” The insult didn’t stick...

But the dementia did.

241 I think the tell right now is that the Dems are somewhat conceding the White House. They began "kidproofing" it just last month by instilling legislation to make it nearly impossible to pull out of NATO....and just yesterday McConnell had proposed legislation passed that provided hard cash to Ukraine and pulling it in the next term would result in automatic Impeachment.

The strategy seems to be to make it impossible to accomplish anything of merit without triggering repercussions both legally and institutionally.

Too old? Yes. I am worried about age for both of them, as I am worried about age for more or less everyone in that age group when they have serious responsibilities.

But age can be offset - at least to a point - by two things:
1. Competence
2. Succession planning

Biden has neither. Trump has the first (though I think it isn't as good as his first time 'round, but objectively I think Trump still has "it") and we'll see about the second.

Once upon a time, probably.

The contemporary problem is that Beau's death has become all things in all scenarios for political purposes. War? Beau's death. Environmental issues? Beau's death. Automobile safety? Beau's death. Economy? Beau's death.

Biden has been flogging his son's death for so long and in so many contexts that the persistent use of the example, combined with Biden's increasing dementia, probably means that Biden no longer knows the reality at all. He isn't lying anymore. He literally no longer knows and cannot know.

And before you poopoo the slippery slope argument, consider gay marriage and the fact that Democrats have already passed abortion until birth and, I believe, in one case saying that a mother cannot be prosecuted for a baby under six weeks dying of neglect.

311 246 So looking at those poll preferences what I'm seeing is that every single thing most voters really care about...
Immigration
Crime
Economy
Inflation
Wars
Trump has a huge margin.

Stuff that only idiots and democrats care about...
Abortion
Climate change
Are all biden.
Posted by: Madamemayhem
-------
There is something called issue salience (aka importance) to voters. Single issue voters like on firearms and abortion are a relatively small proportion of voters. Most voters weigh the variety of issues and war (UKR and HamAss)/economy have historically been right up there. Immigration is probably replacing Covid in 2024 as the most important temporal issue.

I think Gallup runs a poll annually about what are the top ten? problems viewed by the public since the 50's. That allows respondents to rank the problems and has been pretty good tell about what the public wants fixed.

313 Last time I looked into the "false" claims generally feel into the following categories

1) Jokes
2) Exaggerations
3) Statements where the FNM are the ones actually lying
---
They also count each time he says what they claim is false as another lie.
Thus, each time he says in a campaign speech, "the Russian collusion hoax" that is counted as another lie.
"Fake new" that's another lie.
"Sleepy Joe" counted as a lie.
"Crooked Hillary" is another lie.
Etc., etc.

314 You forgot a *big* category that I found in various allegations of "lying".

-> Things without proof (or that the press could find an expert to differ with).

I was generally including them under the category of "the FNM are the ones lying".

For example I bet you that claiming COVID came out of the Wuhan lab is still counted as a lie...

Dunno, going through the dementia thing with a close relative and that relative has good days and bad days. Plus, vascular dementia (common in stroke patients), which is something that Joe has, produces different symptoms and outcomes than Alzheimers. Ya know, right when he washed the disciples feet and then talks to them about the significance of what he'd done for them, he says "..you are clean, though not every one of you." For he knew who was going to betray him etc.

so EVEN IF Jesus himself washed your feet, it doesn't mean you're good to go. In fact, I imagine it's quite a bit worse in judgement if Jesus actually washed your feet and you then treat his blood like a doormat. People think they're being clever with turning Bible stories around and it's going to be so, so much worse for them as a result.
