How Venus got its Zoozve back. (Sky and Telescope)

Back in the dim, dusty reaches of two weeks ago, a cute and amusing story appeared on Twitter about how a children's poster of the Solar System came out with a moon of Venus mistakenly labelled Zoozve.

Mistakenly because (a) Venus doesn't have any moons - not exactly, anyway - and because the designation of the asteroid so labelled is actually 2002VE 68. The creation of Zoozve was an accident of the artist's bad handwriting.

But 2002VE 68 is not just any asteroid, but what is known as a quasi-moon; it doesn't orbit Venus the way the Moon orbits the Earth, but dances a intricate gavotte around both Venus and the Sun that is expected to last several hundred years before the partners part ways.

It was the first such quasi-moon discovered; since 2002 another eight have been found, seven of them around Earth.

And since all it had - until now - was a catalog number, it was eligible to be named if someone could (a) submit a formal proposal and (b) convince enough members of the relevant IAU committee to vote for it.

So they did, and now the poster is retroactively correct.

Zen 5 could have double the floating point performance of Zen 4. (WCCFTech)

Zen 4 already squashes Zen 3 and Intel chips on any benchmark that can use AVX512 instructions, because while Zen 4 only implements a cut-down version of AVX512 that breaks 512-bit instructions into two 256-bit instructions, Zen 3 and Intel's consumer chips don't support it at all.

Zen 3 because it just doesn't; Intel because the P cores do but the E cores don't, and that created such a headache that it was simpler to just burn the functionality out with a laser before the chips left the factory.

How good it is we don't know yet. Intel's server chips that implement full AVX512 have to significantly reduce clock speeds when you are using those instructions because it burns power like mad. But AMD chips are more power-efficient than Intel - currently - so they might not feel as much heat.

11 The funny thing is, apparently AVX-512 is supposed to be really good at AI calculations, so if they hadn't yanked it to make E-Cores a thing, they'd be way better able to compete in the CPU AI workloads they tried to market as their big edge over AMD's chips.

But they had to burn it out with a laser after the first wave of Alder Lake, so it's gone now.

44 I checked out Hydrogen cars when I worked in Tucson. There was a pilot program:
You couldn't buy the car.
You had to fill it at one station downtown (where traffic was always horrible.
IIRC the fuel was free.
You had to give up the car after 2 years when the pilot program was over.
I don't know anyone who was in the program and never heard anything more about it.

It's not that I care what the hell she does. It's the concerted effort to corrupt our youth that pisses me off. Which is what I see.

They had a camera on her.
When she picked up the beer that camera displayed it on the Jumbo-tron knowing full well the entire audience in the stadium and television audience could see it also.

193 Imagine something like the 50 all-state high school ensembles forming a choir to perform for 20 minutes at the superbowl. No fireworks, no strippers, etc. Just dedicated youth and uplifting music sang by the most talented kids in each state, all performing together.

I wonder how it would be received.

200 In dumpster diving news, the ancient Compaq laptop I fished out of the DoD contractor's dumpster did have a working hard drive, which I removed and examined. It was last updated in 2002, and far from being DoD related, seems to have been used by the local hospice volunteer group!
What it was doing in that building is a mystery to me. I'm trying to remember now what was in that part of the building 20+ years ago, I know it wasn't the current tenant but it seems bizarre an office or stock room would have got untouched for that length of time!
I guess it's not impossible but Wow.
The laptop wants to power up but can't, I'm thinking BIOS battery but I handed it to The Kid and she can fool around with it. She loves old timey computer shit.
