THE MORNING RANT: “Church Ladies of the Left” - Society Needs Moral Busybodies to Return to Their Historic Role at Local Church Congregations

Church Lady.JPG

In my circles of childhood friends – be they from school, church, or in the neighborhood - there were a few who stood out as being either goody-two-shoes (boys) or prim and proper scolds (girls). There was no better Sunday School student - or tattletale - than these momma’s boys and junior church ladies. Yet the ones I’ve kept up with have long since abandoned religion, or to be more specific, they’ve abandoned Christianity. Instead, they have religiously embraced the eco-leftist agenda and all its various tentacles, or what I refer to as “The Sustainable Organic Church of the Carbon Apocalypse.” Here they have found an outlet to continue evangelizing for a form of grim puritanism.

For simplicity’s sake, I am going to refer to all of these humorless people in their adult form as “Church Ladies of the Left,” whether they are male, female, or one of their many other genders.

Society would be much better off if these Church Ladies of the Left participated in an actual local church congregation as an outlet for their judgment and scolding, rather than seeking to re-organize society in a way that ensures everyone lives an equally joyless life.

Senator Marco Rubio wrote an interesting piece that was published in Compact magazine a few days ago, titled “Against Progressive Pseudo-Religion”.

Last December, The Washington Post ran an article about “spiritual collectives” emerging across America. These progressive, post-Christian alternatives to church sing Beatles and Bono tracks, rather than hymns. They welcome “people of all faiths and no faiths.” Most important, they preach questions instead of answers. According to the Post, “spiritual collectives” are defined—and distinguished from churches—by their resistance to dogma.

But are they really? A closer read makes it abundantly clear that these communities are united by articles of faith. They just happen to be articles of progressive politics, rather than of traditional religion.

Correct. Humans are hard-wired to be religious. Just because there are some among us who have repudiated Christianity and other established religions, they still cannot escape the innate religiosity that is part of our existence. The left-wing belief that bad weather and natural disasters are caused by sinners in our midst is the most primitive of religious beliefs.

In a recent post of mine, I noted that “People are inherently religious. It was almost certainly a factor in our evolution and survival as a species, helping to create family units, parenting structures, agricultural practices, forbidden destructive behaviors, etc. which allowed humans to flourish. But being inherently religious, we’ll rapidly adopt evil religious practices where there is a void from good religions. Anti-humanity death cults (the Church of Climate, radical Islam) have filled the void where Judeo-Christianity has retreated.”

In that piece, I discussed Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s conversion to Christianity and how she makes the persuasive case that a Christian revival is necessary. Ms. Hirsi Ali wrote that, “We can’t fight off these formidable forces unless we can answer the question: what is it that unites us? The response that “God is dead!” seems insufficient. So, too, does the attempt to find solace in “the rules-based liberal international order”. The only credible answer, I believe, lies in our desire to uphold the legacy of the Judeo-Christian tradition.” She added, “We can’t fight woke ideology if we can’t defend the civilisation that it is determined to destroy. And we can’t counter Islamism with purely secular tools.”

While Christianity is needed to fight global evil, it can also help civilization by providing a venue for moral busybodies to do their thing locally rather than globally.

Like traditional protestant church ladies, the typical Church Lady of the Left is obsessed with regulating the behavior of others. For those who engage in behaviors that violate her strict moral compass, she will seek to inflict her moral guidance upon them, shaming and canceling them as necessary, while also striving to establish rules that forbid such transgressions.

It is an unfortunate burden on clergy when they have a particularly assertive church lady in their flock, but providing an outlet for these zealots is a service unto all society. It is better for us all if “Bertha-Better-Than-You” (see Ray Stevens video below) is all worked up about Deacon Johnson spending too much time assisting the widow Harris, than Bertha obsessing that there are climate sinners among us driving SUVs, and demanding obedience to the gospel of Net Zero.

When churches are strong and prominent in our culture, they provide so much more than just a place to worship. They also provide fellowship, music, art, structure, the fulfillment of volunteerism, a (semi-)controlled environment for adolescence, grief counseling, missionary work, and so much more.

But churches can also serve as a pressure relief valve for the fervor of those who are born to be moral busybodies.

I pray for a religious revival in this country, in part so that Bertha-Better-Than-You might abandon the Sustainable Organic Church of the Carbon Apocalypse and find an outlet instead in a local house of worship.

*****

Almost obligatory for the subject of today’s post, here is Dana Carvey doing his legendary Church Lady routine.

*****

Ray Stevens also had a hilarious take on Church Lady in his classic song “The Mississippi Squirrel Revival”

All the way down to the amen pew
Where sat Sister Bertha Better-Than-You
Who'd been watchin' all the commotion with sadistic glee
You should've seen that look in her eyes
When that squirrel jumped her garters and crossed her thighs
She jumped to her feet and said, "Lord! Have mercy on me!"

*****

Have a blessed week. As for me, I plan to do some carbon sinning and otherwise behave in ways that offend the Church Ladies of the Left.

20 I totally believe like Ayaan Hirsi that we need a religious revival--a true religion that has a moral code bigger than one's ego. The first revival occurred in the late '60s, populated by youth who were victims of the original self-centered hippie religion. The Jesus Revolution movie is about how it all led to death, and how it still does.

31 I was raised a Catholic. I went to Catholic school for a number of years before The Lord blessed me with a relocation to Texas. After we left that school and church, we learned that one priest had embezzled money and left and the new principal was luring some students into his office and showing them porn mags.

The priest coverups, money laundering and most recently, that embarrassment of a Pope has lead me to denounce my Catholic religion and rely more on my faith and personal relationship with Jesus than any organized religion.

I am willing to take my chances when the time comes to be judged.

I suppose the lefty "churches" that really believe in nothing could serve a purpose, if they get people into a churchgoing frame of mind, even if it's one we find ridiculous. It may be that a transition to a "real" church then becomes more likely. I have no data to back up that speculation, though.

41 That “Black National Anthem” … wow. Two points.

One: the worst thing about the anthem was how poorly performed it was. The singer (who I never heard of) was just ok at best. The background singers were mutant-y and doing this weird, unchoreographed "dance" that looked out of sync and terrible.

Did nobody rehearse this? Literally, a bunch of drunk white girls at a karaoke bar could have done the same job. Hey black Americans, this is what the NFL really thinks of you. They phoned in this pandering, half-assed pile of crap . . . while spending tens of millions on the halftime show.

Two: I hate the idea of a divisive, race-baiting separate "National Anthem" for any certain demographic. What about the hispanic anthem? Asian? There is only one national anthem. Black Americans are American. But if you listen to the lyrics of the song, it’s basically a religious song that leftist Marxists would otherwise never approve of.

I also find it ironic that the NFL is supposedly so concerned with the welfare of blacks, but it continually promotes thuggish, antisocial behavior that disproportionally hurts blacks.

49 In the same way the veil of the Temple was rent in twain in 33 AD, the "Church Age" ended in 1988 AD. We are called to"come out of her". We are now in an extended Judgement Day, which will end in 2033 AD with the end of all things visible. There is no revival coming, nor possible. Thankfully, we still have the Bible, preserved for us through the centuries. No one can hide behind pastors, priests, elders, creeds, rituals, any more.

Speaking of Gaza, there is now a new conspiracy theory that seems to be near-universal on the Left.

Yesterday, Israel got actionable intelligence regarding the location of a couple of hostages.

The hostages are moved frequently, so Israel needed to act quickly, so it assembled a team to get the hostages, found them, engaged in a fire fight with Hamasoids in the apartment building where the hostages were located, and launched a number of air strikes to keep nearby Hamas units from intervening. The hostages were rescued.

However, the Left is now convinced that the operation was only launched at that time because the Super Bowl was underway in the United States, so the American people weren't paying attention to the Israeli hostage rescue mission (which is of course a war crime).

Christian principles also fit directly into the goals many of the apostates, frauds and harlequins allege they represent. But taken to their logical, fruitful and truthful conclusion, they show the complete deception they are trying to achieve. So they dissemble, invent and destroy.

Most, as far as I could tell, were willing to give it a pass as long as it appeared to just be about spreading Jesus' message, but taking shots at pro-life protesters and other "icky" groups? That seems to have been a bridge too far. Seeing a lot of pushback around social media this morning.

There's a story that once in early 19th-century France, some yahoo who had invented a new religion and was disappointed at its lack of success went to Talleyrand and asked him what he might do to get more followers.

Talleyrand responded, "I would recommend you let yourself be put to death and then rise on the third day."

73 Yes, Leftism is an ersatz religion. It has some of the worst elements of Joel Osteen's preaching prosperity theology: Listen to me and God will give you that Cadillac.

It's also tied in with many of its believers having cushy positions in the Borg that are often close to no-show jobs. Keeping that position requires you to be an orthodox believer in Woke.

And there's a class element. Wokesters are born to be "presiders" entitled to lord over those who actually do things. "Let me talk to your manager" said every Karen everywhere.

It was fairly common for some monks to come across an idiot-savant child who could be coached to terrify everyone with horrible stories of angels and demons ascending and descending, and terrifying visions of the local villagers being tossed into the fiery pits of hell for their sins. They would take this child to a local village, put them up on a cart to give an impassioned harangue, and then quietly collect all the "offerings" from the locals and promise them Salvation for their noble sacrifice. another day, another town, wash rinse repeat.

Maybe.

None of the churches are going to be good for much of anything until they get away from trying to fit in and shape society, and back to preaching the Gospel-"You are a sinner destined for Hell but for God's choice to become a Savior for you." Moral behavior, in thankfulness to God, flows from understanding that, and otherwise cannot be achieved in a sustainable way.

83 People are inherently religious not because of evolution but because God himself put that knowledge in our souls and in the natural world all around us. See the first chapter of the book of Romans (just one example):

Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

133 The left rejects traditional Christian faith because they fear God's judgement. They know that they are sinful, that the things they enjoy are morally wrong, but they believe that if this religion "crap" was destroyed then they can continue their perversions without being judged. So they try to destroy religion and God so they can enjoy doing whatever they want without that nagging suspicion that it's wrong and that they will be judged.
This is the basis for them constantly shrieking about "don't judge me, hater" no matter how depraved they are.

They do not understand that it doesn't matter how hard they try, they cannot destroy God. They cannot avoid that final judgment.

143 119 I can't remember which philosopher it was but he posited that there can only be four outcomes, you believe and he is real, you dont believe and he isnt real, you believe and he isnt real, or you dont believe and he is real. 3 of of the 4 have bad outcomes either in life or afterlife (or both), one does not. So why not believe and live as if god is real. it's only upside.

that was good but I think mostly for the Danny DeVito appearance

but overall the ads depended way WAY too much on celeb appearances - it was odd. I have to think the celebs wanted the exposure honestly. in advertising it's known to be a crutch - it's not considered creative to do this. and ALL the ads (almost all) did it. they were helping the old celebs and the young "celebs" grab some cash I think.

the list of good ads is short - that one, the Chris Walken BMW one, the Poppi one (no celebs!!!) and the mullet Kawasaki one (had celebs but fairly obscure ones so didnt depend too much on them).

the poppi one was really the only better-than-average one the whole night. told you about product, showed lifestyle/brand impression, got you curious. hit all the right buttons for a new brand.

Dan Levy was horrendous for the other "new brand" rollout - just trying way, way too hard. he did a terrible job with that campaign.

200 I think Buck is conflating religious zeal with people's need to show they are superior to others through abidance to "the rules."

Not all people, but some. I have seen it with safety regulations, religion, and of course wokism. It is a combination of asserting social superiority and use of an indirect authority.

And I do think there is an evolutionary role here. They gain status by being the ones who protect the group. They protect the group by knowing the rules and pushing others to follow the rules. This gives them virtue.

What Buck said is also true, but there are two different mechanisms at play (IMHO)

The difference is that what we see in many church ladies personality types has nothing to do with religion, it is driven by asserting their superiority and having power through "virtue."

202 Adding to the cultural moral confusion of the role of Christianity is that insipid "He Gets Us" ad campaign that reduces Jesus' entire message into some kind of "Nah, bruh... we're good" forgiveness, because the Savior wasn't afraid of addressing sinners. (The Super Bowl ad was extra-cringey -- making a clear denunciation of Christians as perpetrators of "hate" in society.) Forgetting entirely that when Jesus defended or elevated the forgotten in society, he admonished them to "repent and sin no more," urging them to follow him, is not an oversight by the sponsors of the ads; it's the point of them -- lulling people into believing Grace and Forgiveness are cheap. They were the most costly gift of all.

216 202 Adding to the cultural moral confusion of the role of Christianity is that insipid "He Gets Us" ad campaign that reduces Jesus' entire message into some kind of "Nah, bruh... we're good" forgiveness, because the Savior wasn't afraid of addressing sinners.

222 To be a logical atheist would require one not to follow an altruism philosophy at all.

Someone mistakenly gives you $20 extra change back you keep it. You find a wallet , you keep the money in it. Someone is drowning you don’t risk your life attempting to save them , etc. To do so is contradictory to evolutionary survival theory.

That there are altruistic atheists tells me the human conscience is more than just an evolutionary trait.

Many years ago, the lady (a "good" Catholic who had raised 5 children of her own) who sat my kids was such a person. She once called out her front door that a neighborhood kid should not be damaging (scratching the paint off) someone's new car which was parked on the public street. When the parents of that kid - a longtime neighborhood menace - came home from work, he told them he was publically & loudly scolded. Then I (and several other individuals) took off from work for several days to attend district court on her behalf after the parent's pressed charges. She was given a warning and paid court costs, again, many years ago.

People are more apt to direct broad criticisms to "normal" appearing groups of adults to avoid the potential for an ass-kicking.

They have long since become the Karens of the left, applying the same tactics of demanding that anything THEY don't like be banned, and calling anybody that protests their chosen slew of names.

The only difference between then and now is the political party they are on, and the insults have changed from 'heathen, immoral, devil worshipper' to 'bigot, racist, transphobe'.

No thank you very much.

Scolding and judgemental attitudes do not belong in a Christian church. We strive to encourage one another, but we must keep in mind that Jesus is our Master. Each of us must please Him first before we worry about what other humans think of us.

These leftist scolds hate Christianity because Christians want to be who Christ made them to be, rather than what the lefties (who make up heavy burdens for others) think they should be.

A recent alcoholic fried was saying that when he is late for church he gets dirty looks and made to feel inferior.

But when he is late for his AA meeting he is met with hugs and love. Because they understand that him being late meant he almost didn't come and almost lost the battle with sin that we all fight every day.

It's not so much a trap as a straight-jacket. The Dems and cuck GOP'ers know that a bill to rescind these out-year requirements will never get 60 votes in the Senate to break a filibuster, if Trump is POTUS.

287 Emergency workers in Trinidad and Tobago are racing to clean up a massive oil spill after a mystery vessel ran aground near the Caribbean island, casting a pall over Carnival tourism. The spill was "not under control" as of Sunday, said Prime Minister Keith Rowley, who added that the country is grappling with a national emergency. The mystery vessel capsized Wednesday in waters off the Caribbean island, having made no emergency calls, with no sign of crew, and no clear sign of ownership.

Remember the media in a tizzy during the GOP convention when they were talking about Bush-Regan "Co-Presidency?" It was idiotic.
Now it will be "Who can do the work of the Mighty Joe? Not just one man or woman. No! We need a Co-Presidency!"
You heard it here first.

362 I couldn't help but think that this was the case for the many "Jesus, He Gets Us" commercials that we have been inundated with over the last year (and many times in the superbowl last night). They have a very left-leaning bent and tie religion to ideologically left-of-center concepts.

So was Sam Kinison's IIRC. Sam wasn't a hypocrite and might have found his way to a heavenly reward. Sam repented before a drunk driver killed him. Maybe God has a sense of humor.

It's just that that is one defining difference.

Never had it. Never will.

Or cut such a family deal that he's supreme Elder Statesman for All Time, and he and the entire family will be able to live in places without U.S. extradition. They'll also be allowed in & out of the country for special things (art showings, Netflix's appearances, etc.) much like Obama's good friend Russell Simmons. Plus, they'll keep & manage all of their properties and holdings - including their state & Federal pensions and benefits - foundations, trusts, etc., again much like RS.

370 But God’s answer is often “no” if we’re trying to treat him like a genie in a bottle. God is not there to provide us with what we want; God expects things from us like worship and devotion.

None of this is inconsistent with what I heard the one time i was there, with the caveat that sometimes God’s “no” is never just one word.

And isn’t hearing a “no, but…” from God something worth listening for?

I think we’ve gone too rationalistic in our relationship with God. We’re afraid to ask him for things we humanly want, not just because we’re afraid of the answer but because that would be “pagan” or “treating God like a genie”.

But to paraphrase Chesterton, pagans had one advantage over modern Christians: they really believed they could walk with their gods and speak with their gods of human things. That ability and hope is part of what God has written into our hearts and it is something worth restoring to our lives.

That really was Ray Stevens at the top of his game. Not just the lyrics and music and his singing of it, but the ability to get a great video out of it, too.

For a non-religious song that doesn’t quite reach it but comes close, there’s also Too Drunk to Fish.

378 Great Rant...
but Kipling said it as well.
As I pass through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all....
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

380 The armed forces started commissioning "atheist" chaplains years ago There are "humanistic" rabbis who don't believe in God. I've been saying for years that "atheism" had become a religion. Climate-istas and the Gang Green are part of it. As is the progressive crap. If we can convince people that it is a religion, what happens to the Second Amendment?

381 Counterpoint: boys can turn into tattletales if they're simply the smart kid who is singled out and picked on by the in-crowd boys for being smart (because doing well in class is "for girls"). They were raised to behave themselves in school, and the teachers are kind to them when the other kids aren't, so there it is.

A lot of hatred from certain lefty weasels in academia toward America comes from going through that crap as kids. They're still quite at fault for their current behavior - refusing to grow up emotionally, realize they can be wrong too, or forgive adults for their childhood sins; blaming and trying to hurt everyone for the actions of a few. But some of today's worst monsters began as smart kids in school picked on by various other kids, who are just as guilty of those faults. Leftism is born of vindictive hatred; the warped smart kids hate the bullies who (they think) never so much as feel bad for what they did, and then succeed in life as bullies. So lefties don't hear "let academia burn" as "it's broken and commie," more like "I still get to pick on you anyway and now I want you to be out of a job too."

Again, no excuses for leftist hatred, just how it can start.
