I'm sure there are some standup guys in the NFL, but there sure do seem to be a lot of what could charitably be described as overpaid prima-donnas who aren't exactly good role models. That, and with the league's firm embrace of woke bullshit and you have a product I'm surprised anyone is interested in. And what the heck happened to guys like Dick Butkus, Larry Czonka, Bart Starr and John Unitas? I believe the game went to shit about the time the goal posts were moved to the back of the end zone. What do you think? Football fan or not? Anyhoo, it's a moot point, because this smart kitty already predicts the winner! Range Time! Our pal Catch Thirty-Thr33 heads to the range after battling TSA! This is the damage done with the M9 Back on February 1 I stopped by my beloved Top Gun Range in Houston to get in some badly needed range time. This was my first shooting since the TX MoMe, so it was long overdue. What I had with me was the M9, the Sig P226 Tacops, and the M18. To open this, I should point out the transport of my trio of guns. I checked in my firearms and was told my locks were not TSA compliant. This I countered with the fact that they absolutely were, as they were issued to me by the military to transport an M4 rifle to the Middle East a decade ago. That ended that. Then I went through security, and my bag was flagged because apparently TSA never has seen a nebulizer before (this airport always gives my carry-on extra inspection because of the nebulizer; no others have thus far). In the midst of this, TSA paged me because they wanted to open my case for closer inspection. So I turned in the keys to TSA and they inspected the Pelican case further. They found no issues so they gave me the keys back and on I went. Moral of the story: you never know what will happen once you drop off your guns for transport, and different airports do different things. This is after 80 more rounds with the Sig P226 Tacops Finally, after 102 rounds through the M18, here is how the target looked. The first 17 rounds were disappointing. But I settled down and made the next 85 count In Houston I bought 300 rounds; I took 7 with me in a TSA approved case so that I could fire 105 through the M9, and 102 through the M18. The Sig P226 Tacops having a 20 round magazine, that math was simple. One hundred rounds would go through it. After the setup, time for the games to begin. As usual, two to the chest, one to the head. I changed things each time I completed the three rounds, though. First, one eye open, two hands on the gun. Next, both eyes open, both hands on the gun. (It may sound strange, but with both eyes open, aiming the gun, I see two guns, not one. This is why I shut one eye typically. But I do this because I have no expectation that any bad guy I run across will permit me to get into the most advantageous position for the sake of honor.) Next, one handed, both eyes open. Then one handed, one eye open. And , because I may not be in the best position when called upon to use a handgun, I switch to the left hand. Depending on how many rounds I have, I decide if I use both eyes or one eye. But I put myself through both configurations at least once. I also fired only at 3 yards (or meters?) and 7 yards (meters?) as these are most likely the ranges I would expect to be when shooting for real. Sure, the 15 yard mark might be good to try out, but I only had 307 rounds for this outing. In the case of the M18, I was so disappointed in my first 17 round outing with it, I kept the target at the 3 yard position to make sure I had it nailed down. My shooting improved but that first outing told me to focus on the short range instead before taking it out further. It was a good day at the range and eventually I want to get to the point where I am hitting the range at least once a month to maintain proficiency. But for now, this will do. RI Red and His Range Laboratory Guess who has been back to the range with his scientist hat on? Go ahead, guess! Why, it's none other than our pal RI Red! So, after successfully cleaning and oiling the Glock and having it perform perfectly at the range, I bought another one. It is lily lilac and MOS so I can put the Holosun I want on it. After trying Walthers, Sigs, S&W, I figured out that I shoot best with the Glock 48. It's back ordered though so won't get it til early March. Can't wait.

A fine range trip today, as Mrs. Splunge and I re-imprint the fundamentals we learned ages ago back onto our hands and eyes. She is doing better than I am, making nice groups with her trusty S&W J-frame revolver, and struggling a bit with her little Glock, while still getting nice groups.
Meantime, there I was starting out with lousy groups and too many few fliers, until I got reminders of the fundamentals of a trigger squeeze through my idiot head, and then things tightened up quite nicely. Meanwhile, Mrs Splunge says that her Glock 43 is banging into a particularly protruding bone at the inside base of her thumb. She seems to be holding it well, and the back of the Glock is nice and rounded and smooth, so some sort of anatomy conflict? Anyone have any ideas about that? Howdy, all!
I spent almost all of this past week at the farm and the weather cooperated nicely, so I was able to get in a significant amount of range time. Practiced on the fundamentals and also tried my hand at point shooting, with mixed results. I kept subconsciously trying to acquire my sights instead of pointing at the target. When I forced myself not to try to pick up a sight picture, I did much better. And the 1911 justified its reputation of having a natural point of aim. I don't think that Armalite ad is an actual 1950s vintage ad. The AR-15 shown has too many post-1960 features for it to be real. Among the ones I can see are:
- 30 round curved magazine (circa 1970) - Ribbed hemispherical handguards (circa 1966 w/ XM177 series carbines) - Brass deflector next to ejection port (circa 1984 from the M16A2) - Fencing around the magazine release button and forward bolt assist (circa 1968 from the M16A1) None of this changes the fact that I think the ad is a good one. I reported last time that I had put MP5 clone sights on an EP9 and that the front sight post was too low and looked cool but did not work. I had the sadz. I ordered a 1/2 inch pic rail riser during the thread to remedy.
Well, turns out I need about a .35 inch riser. Gah. They don't make smaller risers. So failed experiment. BUT - turns out I could adjust it up a little more, and it works! But now the detent pin that holds it in place fell out because it won't hold at that height. If it's not one thing its another. But I am going to superglue it. A little hacky, yes. But did I mention it looks cool? Posted by: blaster at February 11, 2024 07:22 PM (IFNME) 33

Range report
Went with son#1 to our regular indoor range, met up with Mark Andrew Edwards and LazyMessenger. He was shooting his M&P Shield in .40 and I took out the G19 as I hadn't shot it in more than a couple years. Son has improved a TON since he first started shooting. He practices dry firing at home with his red dot so he can see if he flinched. Then he shoots at the range without it. Well. I can honestly say I do not like the G19. I don't like the feel or the trigger or the accuracy. It's a big yucky brick and I can't stand it. So much for Glocks. I still like the teeny G42, but I'll never buy another Glock. I much prefer my 1911s or the Walther PPQ. Posted by: nurse ratched at February 11, 2024 07:23 PM (AwEHw) 35

Nice shooting RI Red and Catch 33! Nice holes all close together, what's not to love.
This week was SubGun week, all 9mm. The MKA 760 shined and ran like a scalded dog...hot and fast, no hiccups. The CMMG Banshee was king of the hill, just a no brainer with the Primary Arms GLx2x. Hits and just keeps hitting, even on mag dumps with the F/A AR lower. The CMMG 9mm magazines for AR type mags works very well. The Sten Gun was chugging up from the rear but I love that little ugly mofo. Zero is on at 25 yards and she is so simple you can't keep her from running if you tried. Shot about 500 rounds doing run n gun and will re-visit in a week or 2 to recheck zeros and dump another 500. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at February 11, 2024 07:27 PM (R/m4+) 41

No range time this week because all the gear is still packed up from the move but I did get my CMP 1911 from the FFL. For being a "Service Grade" I admit that I'm slightly disappointed. There is currently a "Field Grade" one on Gunbroker that looks nicer. It's a Colt frame and Ithaca slide. The serial number makes it 1943 so a legit war baby and a piece of history.

One even said it gave him a headache. To which I reply: BS. There may be one or two nose sensitive souls who are effected but I doubt it. I think some uber-purist came up with this one many years ago. "Wooden matches are the only thing to use to light a pipe, don't you know. And we all know the kind of unwashed who use Zippo lighters." Ah, there was a day when I was a big NFL guy, when I was a huge fan of the Broncos, as I lived in Denver at an impressionable age and was, as many of the boys I went to school with, huge fans of the great QB John Elway. There was a time that no matter what, I made time for the Super Bowl and the playoffs, and a time when I ran smack at everybody in regards to football. As late as 2019 I made a visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and took time out to pay tribute to each of the Broncos inducted there to that point.
Now? Not watching the game. The last I saw was Super Bowl LIV. Don't know what's going on in the NFL, don't care. But you see, I used the NFL to get AWAY from politics and other more serious business crowding my mind. It was an escape. When it stopped being that it lost its value. I'd love to follow the game again; I still love football and have taken to watching old NFL Films shows on YT. But... And the Washington Commanders should change their name to the Washington Red Guards. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at February 11, 2024 07:39 PM (8sMut) 61

The G48 MOS (purple) is $600 including shipping to my FFL. It has a 10 rd mag which is legal in MD. For $399 I can put a top of the line Holosun green dot on it so price complete $1000. The research I did was helpful, in that I found out I can pick up almost any 9mm semi and shoot it relatively accurately but I shoot best with the G48 which just fits my hand. Almost everything I tried was around $1000 without a sight. Ones with were in the $1600 range. I decided to stop thinking and just do. i am sure it is not the last gun I will ever buy. I really liked Ed's P226 MK25. There may be something similar in my future. But right now I am looking forward to running the course in Texas with the new Glock.

Turns out I have the dry eye problem (I'm sure old enough) although I wasn't aware of it. It came out when I had the cataract surgery a few months ago. The surgeon recommended Oasis Artificial Tears as part of the recovery and for general use. They work great. I'm finding I need to use them about once every day or three.

||Although there are a few original Stens in the NFA system, most of the Sten guns in private hands today were assembled from original part kits and a new U.S.-manufactured receiver tube. According to federal law, no original receiver foreign guns could be registered after 1968, but a new receiver could be manufactured and used to assemble a working submachine gun—after, of course, BATF approval. Unfortunately, laws were passed in 1986 ending any new (transferable) registration of machine guns.||

It's OK for guys like the SEALS and Delta to use SA/DA pistols without positive applied safeties like the 1911, but not Private Snuffy or Lieutenant Fuzz. Can't trust them with a loaded weapon that doesn't have a positive applied safety on it. Posted by: Ed L at February 11, 2024 08:18 PM (yRXSd) 153

Our local range has an intro to steel shooting event:
Tired of standing in the booth? Feeling trapped, confined? Curious as to what downrange really feels like? It’s time to get moving. Join us for a special 2-hour session dedicated to the very thing people crave: competition. This introduction will focus on what to bring, what to expect and what to do. Etiquette, safety, gear requirements and gear placement along with tips and tricks from the very people that design the courses you run will be stressed in a relaxed setting. The session will end with a short course of fire, run exactly as it would during our Wednesday night steel shoots. Requirements include 50 rds of non-frangible ammo and an OWB holster. BUT IT SOLD OUT WITHIN 24 hours of the announcement. Dang it. Posted by: blaster at February 11, 2024 08:21 PM (IFNME) 161

Thanks for the cane video! I've had to use one occasionally and I never thought about using it with the hook forward.
My cane is a Ka-bar (yes, the knife company) made out of aluminum. It is unbreakable, made out of heavy duty tubing. If you're over 29, buying a cane such as a lightweight Walmart one, before you need it, is a good idea. Hopping on one leg across the parking lot to get to the cane section is kind of undignified. Gun Thread Greetings, Horde!
A "Beg to Buy". I'm scouring the markets for parts from an Interarms MkX Mauser ('9 receiver. Could also be a Parker-Hale, (same, from Zastava factory). Bottom metal. (trigger guard, magazine, hinged floorplate, magazine follower & spring). Highly polished, black/blue. The later variants as found on Charles Daly or the Remington 798, NOT wanted. The former has the floorplate release in the lower-front of the trigger guard bow (same as Remington 700). The latter have a "cross-bolt" floorplate release in the upper front bow of the trigger guard, necessitating an ugly "half moon" be laterally hogged out of the stock. UGLY! And, a full COMMERCIAL Bolt-Release/Ejector assembly for the Mauser '98. No "mil-surp" stuff with associated proof marks. I'll $pend Money for these goodies, so any tips or leads, appreciated! I think I've worn out the 'net, looking for them, but your search-fu might dwarf mine, so, I'm asking! Oh, and those B-27 targets up top? They're not walking away from anything, after all that. I was a little disappointed by the cane video - I was expecting more in the vein of using it for self-defense. It puts me in mind of the incident (probably 20 years ago now) where a young thug tried to rob an elderly gentleman in a parking lot. Turns out the old fellow was an Alamo Scout in WWII and whipped the thug's ass thoroughly with his walking stick. Posted by: That SOB Van Owen at February 11, 2024 08:43 PM (PWe8a) 242

Posted by: mindful webworker - bullets & beef? Food/gun thread crossover at February 11, 2024 08:32 PM (ZFdeh) That really didn't used to be as much of a thing. I seem to recall a stage where it was "don't put your finger on the trigger", which seemed to (at least sometimes) mean it was okay to be within the trigger guard, as long as you had it forward. Speaking of which, Lana Del Ray evidently did an Instagram post holding a pistol. Most people freaked out about there being a pistol in her hand. Gunners actually noticed she might have had her finger in the trigger guard/on the trigger. Men said "What gun?" - at least at first. Posted by: GWB at February 11, 2024 08:53 PM (32nmx) 258

So quick range report, feel free to skip.
The S&B 230gr JHP continues to be problematic. I suspect there are some excessively hard primers here. Only two of my .45 pistols will consistently fire the damn things, my Ruger SR1911 and my Glock 21. In fact, my CZ 97 had the damn loaded chamber indicator fly off. This is the second CZ 97 that has had this particular failure. So I can't endorse this ammo. On the good side, the Augila 40gr copper plated solids are very reliable. I can endorse this round. And other good news, my PSA Dagger is still performing well, very well even. I did have to have the front sight replaced, might be my draw stroke is dragging the front sight. It's metal and I'm not amused by the failure but...the gun itself has been reliable mechanically: it just keeps shooting. Personally, I prefer the Benelli M4 Law Enforcement and Military Model (w/ the collapsing stock) for its proven combat record (USMC resistant), gas operation (less felt recoil), and reliability. But the Mossberg 930 is probably "good enough" and less than half of the price of a Benelli M4 LE/Military Model new. I do think that the fixed stock might be a problem if your arms are short for the length of pull on that shotgun. That's a big plus for the Benelli's collapsing stock. Then you need to get the new Hush Puppy Glock from B&T! Check out the short 90 second video from Forgotten Weapons about it from the 2024 SHOT Show. Any military people here who went through the hangars at Tustin? We stopped by to pay our respects to the remnants of the north hangar recently after the big fire. Sad to see - only the four concrete pillars that supported the giant doors remain.

understand that the US Army demanded this feature for the M17 pistol competition. Since SIG was the only bidder that delivered exactly what the Army wanted, that's why SIG won.
Posted by: Ed L Army also required that the new pistol be "modular." I believe this was to get around Congress meddling every time a new weapon is needed. Now, if a need arises for a 20 shot, 4" barrel, in .357 SIG model, the Army has that covered with just a couple of buckets of spare parts. Comes from the experience w/ the Beretta M9. The M9 was supposed to replace the wide variety of .38 revolvers in use by the likes of the USAF, USN, aviators of all stripes, and investigators (CID, NCIS, OSI, etc.). But the M9 didn't do CCW very well. CID and NCIS then got the M11 through as a concealable alternative to the M9. Then the SEALS started playing w/ hot ammo and found the M9 wanting. They ended up w/ the Mark 25. SOCOM stuck w/ .45 ACP and got their own pistols, the Mark 23 and Mark 24. The USMC didn't want the M9, so they kept the M1911 in the form of the M45 and M45A1 for Force Recon and the USMC Raiders. As a universal pistol, the M9 utterly failed. The Army hopes that the M17 will do what the M9 couldn't. Posted by: Ed L at February 11, 2024 09:41 PM (yRXSd) 357

356: First it was the M17 but from everything I have seen that is now the reserve of Army flag officers. The M18, based on the M17 of course (with a shorter barrel), first started use with the USMC. As I understand it, this was because the shorter barrel led to effective conceal carry applications. Then all the other branches jumped on it. I first saw this when I noticed the SF personnel at the AFB gates carrying it. So it looks like the M17 - or really the M18, based on the M17 platform - will succeed where the M9 failed.
