Report: Mitch McConnell Lied to GOP Senators About Ukraine Aid Being Tied to Biden's Performance In Closing the Border

The report claims further that GOP senators are sick enough of this repulsive foreign agent that his "leadership" is "in jeopardy".

To ensure real border security, "I pushed for making the Ukraine funding contingent on actual border metrics," like threshold and performance measures over a number of months, [Senator Ron] Johnson told TAC. "We definitely had a majority of our conference support that."
"The only way you can get border security with a lawless administration is you have to tie it to something they want," which was aid for Ukraine, Senator Rick Scott of Florida told TAC in a phone interview. "So a lot of us, and Ron Johnson was probably the most vocal on this, said we've got to have metrics and the numbers need to come down to the Trump numbers, or you don't get the Ukraine aid over a period of time."

The reason the bill failed to secure the border, however, is because McConnell, after deputizing Lankford, prevented the senator from Oklahoma from attaching Ukraine aid to any real, concrete metric of bringing down the number of migrants entering the United States.
"Without telling anybody, apparently, McConnell, on his own, told Lankford that's not even on the table," Johnson said. Later, "we had that confirmed by Sinema, who said that James never asked for that." For Johnson, it was "a breach of [McConnell's] leadership position" by blowing off the consensus view of the conference.

McConnell is now pushing a standalone bill for Ukraine funding -- and abandoning any pretense of wanting to protect America's border at all.

Pivoting from one failed supplemental to likely another makes it "obvious that Mitch's top priority is to provide aid to Ukraine--to secure Ukraine's border before ours," Johnson claimed. As for the Senate, Johnson says "this is not the world's greatest deliberative body. We hardly deliberate at all."

It's "a borderline fetish with getting Ukraine money and they're willing to give away all of our leverage to get it. Everybody needs to say this is a no-go. Vote no on this package. The worst piece of legislation, I think, in the U.S. Senate since I've been here and we've got to absolutely get it out of here."

I don't see any quotes by Senators calling for McConnell to be deposed. The closest they come is to imply it:

"I am hoping my colleagues are really taking a close hard look and asking themselves, 'How did we get in a position where we're being blamed for a problem that was 100% caused by Biden and his Democrat allies in Congress?'" Johnson said. "McConnell led us into that."
...
"There needs to be a change in how we manage and govern the conference," Scott said. "Everybody I talk to basically agrees. I don't know people who don't agree with me that we have to govern the conference a different way."

i missed that. But yeah, they did try to depose him a year or two back. I think they did force the vote, but then the vote went overwhelmingly for the Chinese Foreign Agent.

I have no memory of that, but it very well could have happened.

What I do remember is that the actual leadership vote at the start of Congress was acrimonious to the point where the losers refused the final unifying vote that is typical in these kinds of parliamentary proceedings.

Still, McConnell seems to be weak. I think it's time for Rick Scott to show the world that he's the man of the hour!

One Senator, selected by the State Legislature, one selected by the State's Governor, and those entities have the power to recall them at ANY time... based on rules THEY decide.

It's kind of obvious if you know what to look for. Desperation changes the norms. Cocaine Mitch was always careful. In the last week he's done this, backtracked on legislation (which he never does btw) and months ago (in his unhealthy state) took an 18 hour plane ride to Ukraine for absolutely no reason (btw, Pelosi was along for the ride and she has similary health issues to bar such travel efforts). Ukraine keeps meticulous records it would seem.

They did, but this seems more serious to me. Rumors of shouting matches in the Senate, and people being outright disrespectful of McConnell suggest he's in trouble. When informed of what Cruz said a few days ago, he smiled and said "he's obviously not a fan".

It's hard to predict things like this. Nobody knows exactly when the coup will happen, but I think there's little doubt anymore that it WILL happen. Self-preservation makes it necessary.

Normally the vote for Senate leadership occurs after a general election in the Nov. to Dec. frame. Rules have varied whether or not new incoming senators get to vote and whether departing senators do as well.

Technically though, the GOP conference can replace McConnell according to their own rules and if you have a majority--even suspend the rules I think. Know more about the House side and there is not a specific vacate the chair motion voted upon by the whole Senate as there is in the House.

I wonder if there are objective measurements that could be used to tell which method is worse. Passage of time probably clouds judgement of those, like me, who think direct elections are a mistake. States as unique political entities, corrupt as they are, are no longer represented in Congress, taking away one of the checks/balances thougtfully put in place by the founders. Arguably leading on a much faster pace to a much to powerful federal government.

There's a ~~theory~~ hypothesis that a lot of ideas aren't really better or worse than others after a certain point, an switching to a different schema (and then switching again after a while) is possible the best way.

Like electing vs. appointing judges. Each has its benefits and drawbacks, and after a while, the benefits dry up and the drawbacks accumulate.

I kind of think direct elections to the Senate vs. state appointments are like that. There are obvious venues for corruption with state appointments, that direct elections "fixed," but eventually those have problems too. So maybe we switch back for a while.

But your second point is, I think, the same as mine albeit framed differently. "Pax Americana" is central to their opinion of themselves, not only because it represents their power (which is their true motivation, I think) but also their greatness and invincibility. However, the discharge petition legislation still has to have its 'rules' set from the Rules Committee for debate time, amendments allowed, etc.

Clever manipulation of rules can make a sure pass bill into a mess using tactics like King of the Hill amendments and so on.

Any difference between the original Senate bill and the House bill then requires a conference committee and a conference report that each House can vote for or against.

That is why so many bills are jammed through via omnibus or supplemental must pass appropriations.

The leaders tell the followers what to do AND what to believe and they do.

Remember when Trump fired Comey? Colbert conveyed the news to his audience and they started cheering. Then he Colbertsplained to them that this was bad and they started booing.

There was NO thinking as to whether this was good, bad, or neutral. The previous talking point was Comey was bad and should be fired, but when the new talking point came out that Trump was bad for firing him they instantly changed their views.

I believe funding Ukraine is important - and feel it should have been stand alone to start with. McConnell's antics have made that stand alone option that much more difficult. He should have seen that. I'm assuming he suffered a little more than we think from his medical event.
