willowed OT: for those of us living in Clownifornia, the ban on shipping/buying ammo from home just went tits up today, and several ammo suppliers are taking internet orders for shipment. Primary Arms and Ammunition Depot are two that I know of.

I just bought a couple of cases, and I'm crossing my fingers hoping that there isn't another stay put into place to halt things before they ship. Last time, it was only a couple of days of ammo freedom before the CA black-robe cocksuckers stamped on it.

Best y'all get in on the action soon, if you can. Don't worry about being put on a list for buying ammo online, you're already marked for being a Moron.

Sorry, Elvis needed to go look at the stars.

It was even longer ago than that. It was a family trip with my mom and dad and sister. We rented a Winnebago style RV and spent a few weeks visiting the national parks out west. It was a fantastic vacation and being able to camp in the parks was the best part.

86 Here is a switchback between Sorrento and Amalfi, Italy. Not nearly as dramatic as the one in Zion but neat none the less. The drive between the two cities is dramatic though, especially if you like tunnels and cliff hangers.

Boil the hell out of chicken pieces (with fat and bones). In the broth, add mirepoix (carrots, celery onions). I sometimes add potatoes (and mushrooms at the end since they cook slower). I often add a dash of some herb mixture at the end too. When done, you can add the chicken meat back. At salt to taste.

That's your stock.

Then sautéed onion, garlic, leeks and shallots in butter. Add carrot, celery. I add mushrooms and jalapeños and kale. Cook it down a bit. Add your stock, salt, pepper and meat if you want.

Simmer for 45 mins or so.

Eat veggies and drink as much of the broth as you can.

I make a great Chicken Soup, but it's not ready to serve until the 3rd cooking. When that "golden" chicken colored soup-water converts itself to nearly a roux, and all the flavors mature and blend.

So, I can road the bird on a Monday, break it down and start the simmer, then let it cool, strip the carcass, strain the bones, season the water, and then start to add the various veggies and grains, and finally, the sorted Chicken meat. Into the fridge with it, and cook again on Tuesday. Fridge, again. Wednesday, about an hour after it gets hot on the stove, that water goes roux, and WOW! You're gonna love the bowl of goodness!

So, next time, let me know on Sunday, I'll start cooking on Monday, and you can come down with your cold on Wednesday. Soups On!

But in that scenario, it stands to reason that Mo's own tribe would keep dogs for the same purpose. In which case, it becomes standard dog behavior, and not a good reason to get a hate going. I think's Mo's hatred and fear of dogs was intensely personal, and probably reciprocated by any dogs that encountered him.

If they roll out a 2nd Edition, I'll write it up.

I worked in an early (1970s) Soup & Salad Restaurant in San Diego, CA. 20, 40, 60 qt. pots were the norm.

But, I brought that particular pot of soup up from Galveston, to Corsicana, in the Crown Vic I drove at that time. Attendance at that 2nd TxMoMeet was not quite beautiful, thundering herd, that it has become. Dozen quarts worked out to a Just Right amount.

Didn't spill a drop all along the way, either.

Anyway. I learned a great deal about "building" a soup, from one of the best who'd ever done it.

Proof is in the bowl, and there were a great many such, nommed down to the last spoonful, that day.

271 First, sautee all the fish stuff in garlicky butter, pan sear it, but don't overcook it.

Scallops, shrimp, crab meat, mussels, oysters, it's all good into a seafood gumbo or bisque.

The sautee firms up the fish, and adds a LOT of flavor to the base.

Makes for a nice, and not mushy, fish soup.

It was 105 degrees on my trip there. I had been at Yellowstone the weekend before (Memorial Day) and cold temps and snowfall got me stuck at the Old Faithful grounds. But I was traveling solo and with no time schedule which was nice.

Depending on the pH of the solution. A fun experiment for kids:

Tear several leaves of red cabbage into small pieces and place into zip-closing plastic bag. Add about a cup of water to the bag. Remove as much air as possible from the bag and seal it. Hold the bag at the top with one hand and squish the leaves in the water with the other hand for a couple of minutes until the water turns a dark blue. Pour the liquid from the plastic bag into a cup. Discard the leaves. The liquid is your red cabbage indicator.

Test various household solutions

Your red cabbage indicator should be dark blue in color. The color of the cabbage indicator will change to red or pink if the solution is an acid and it will change to green or yellow if it is a base. It will remain purple or blue if the test solution is neutral.
