Is This Something?

I'm a big fan of the Guy Ritchie/Henry Cavill Man from UNCLE reboot, so I will definitely be seeing this.

The guy from Reacher's in it, too.

There's a character who uses a bow and arrow in firefights which might be "Mad Jack" Churchill. Apparently he was in fact a Commando. I don't know if he was part of any of the missions shown here but to be honest I think they're making 99.9% of it up so it doesn't really matter anyway.

LOL, I just checked IMDB -- Ian Fleming is a character too. He did in fact contribute various (unused, I think) mission plans for Naval Intelligence. I got the feeling that as an intelligence officer, Ian Fleming made for a great thriller novelist.

I think this movie is probably taking the Inglorius Basterds path of historical adjacency. Which is fine by me. I hate having to argue and debate whether a movie is accurate. Sometimes I just want them to announce "We're going to really explore the studio space here" so I can just enjoy it without worrying about accuracy.

BTW, the Henry Cavill-Matthew Vaughn movie Argylle comes out this weekend. One big gripe reviewers are making is that Henry Cavill isn't the actual lead of this movie. But, I mean, you get that from the trailer: Henry Cavill is the fictional spy that the heroine writes about. Obviously, then, he's not the main actor. The main male actor is Sam Rockwell.

I've heard other people offering mixed reviews. Apparently the movie has a lot of twists, and some of the twists that come near the end are too preposterous for some people -- as Chris Gore says, when you pile four twists on top of each other, it "just gets dumb" -- or maybe the twists undermine the rest of the movie (by like revealing that some stuff you thought was real wasn't real, or something -- I don't know, I'm trying to stay spoiler-free myself).

It's divisive, it seems. I like Matthew Vaughn and I like Henry Cavill and I have no problem with Sam Rockwell being the real male lead. So I'm going to give it a shot. I don't expect it to be great, but when audiences get annoyed at a movie being "too over-the-top," I kind of get curious.

Chris Gore says it's a "chick flick," as the actual main character is the spy writer played by Bryce Dallas Howard, which just has the trappings of an action movie. I got that from the trailer too, though.

He gives it a 4 out of ten. I still might give it a shot -- I mean, how dumb and over-the-top is it, exactly? I kinda want to know.

This might be okay. I like Paul Rudd's fourth-wall-damaging line at 1:50.

Jordan Peele is a drip but I kind of dig this:

I think I like this trailer for Shogun more. Starts February 27th. I don't have cable but if I hear something is good I'll buy it on Amazon.

Eh:

If that girl sounds familiar, she's Ratcatcher 2 from The Suicide Squad.

Peele bought the rights to Dev Patel's Monkey Man from Netflix, who produced it.

It was made about 3 years ago and held because, apparently, it's anti-some Indian government official rather explicitly, and Netflix doesn't want to endanger its Indian business with the movie. So, they sold it to Peele (but mostly Universal).

Road House apparently tested really well. Who knows?

What I do know is that the film was made under MGM, then MGM got bought by Amazon, and Amazon made Road House a streaming feature instead of a theatrical one.

The FNT crew hated it. Without getting into story spoilers, the meta spoiler is that the main character (the cat lady author) has the same name as the real life author of the book the movie is based on.

Posted by: Methos at February 02, 2024 04:18 PM (Dnobf)

22 The Melissa McCarthy Spy movie was actually funny -- until the end, when they decided that a spy parody requires ten twists and three cases of double agents revealing themselves.

That was in fact stupid, and it wasn't funny, and I wanted them to shut up with the stupid "twist reveals" and just wrap it up. the last 20 minutes of that movie got a whole star rating deducted, as far as my rating goes.

I wonder if that's what they mean with Argylle. Because, if that's what's going on -- yeah, that's stupid.

And also, spy adventures do not usually have multiple twist reveals. The most famous series, James Bond, barely has any twist villain reveals at all, and Mission Impossible hasn't bothered with any since the first one.

How fun to make the opposite of that, one of the plot twists?

The landing party beams down and Captain Kirk is killed, rather than the random security guy in a red uniform.

Risky to pull off in a movie and get the audience behind you.

59 People online are getting worried about the Avatar The Last Airbender live-action adaptation. It recently came out that they intend to remove any misogynistic elements from the character Sokka, which is dumb because those elements actually represent a major part of the character’s growth and his arc in the original involves him overcoming his original prejudices.

The fact that the show runners of this new show apparently dont get that and just saw “misogyny bad, must remove” indicates they dont know (or care) enough about the source material to do it justice. He played an episode on New Girl as the hot guy love interest, but revealed that he has a micro-penis. This put the female lead into quite a conundrum.

146 As for realism in movies, it's all about expectations being set early and then staying consistent.

If you signal that you're making a movie with superheroes or magic, I'll cut it more slack but you've established that extra-natural abilities exist.

If you pull that shit halfway through a movie, I'm less tolerant. Historical setting are more tricky. I like things to hew as close to the truth as possible, you can fudge timelines for drama but honestly....if the story is worth telling, it probably doesn't need elaboration.

See also, if your movie is called 'Napolean' don't make it mostly about how awesome Josephine was*

We lived near Monterey, CA a ways back. I recall the quake that hit Paso Robles in 2003. It toppled our chimney, screwed up a grandfather clock and otherwise rattled the house.

The hardwood floors undulated too.

248 @104 Breaking narrative for actual heartfelt sympathy.

Mannix, I "am allowed" one pizza per month, and make the most of it. I've found (by checking blood sugar readings at the prescribed interval) that a heavily-loaded pizza on an old school traditional thin crust is diet-survivable. Has to be from an old established pizzeria who's been at this a while, and must not have any modern trappings, cheese stuffed etc. Almost everything else on a pizza is good for you. I'm not even going to mention anchovies.

250 Road House apparently tested really well. Who knows?

What I do know is that the film was made under MGM, then MGM got bought by Amazon, and Amazon made Road House a streaming feature instead of a theatrical one.

Trailer really makes it look like it was made before DEI and #metoo. Like a straightforward action piece. I think it looks good! I have a soft spot for the original but I always turn it off after Sam Elliot's character dies. No point in continuing after that.

Also, I thought I was the only guy who really liked Man From U.N.C.L.E.! It's a real shame it didn't do better at the box office. I'd like to have seen a franchise.

Argyle is intriguing enough to be worth a look. And honestly I like Bryce Dallas Howard. She directed some of the better episodes of The Mandalorian in the earlier seasons -- in fact, she's largely responsible for the design of Gina Carano's character.

252 I started to like/kniw Henry Cavill from the Witcher, and knowing that he's an actual dork and seems like an anti-woke type guy, I'll support it. Also the guy who plays Reacher is in it, and he seems cool.

Tops though is that Eliza Gonzales is in it, I worked with her about 2 years ago and she's very nice, on top of being a punch a wall levels of amazingly hot.

254 Generally booming economy. Would you like that in a $12.35 meal deal, or just the shit sandwich?
