First-World Problems...

candleflaw.jpg

That's a tall candle that is obviously part of the slide into mediocrity that American manufacturing suffers. Look how badly it burns! No symmetry!

And trimming it doesn't help.

There ought to be a law!

The apartment complex where I lived when I was newly married had a fire begin in one of the units because a cat knocked over a candle. It was just before Christmas and the couple who lived there had just gone over to another neighbor's apt. for a small party, leaving the candle lit. The fire gutted the apartment but barely damaged any others. Never learned if the cat was okay or not. But the episode taught me a lesson.

I'm gonna give away my million dollar idea... during covid the dollar store was always running out of tapered candles. But I had a kitchen drawer full of 4, 5, and 6 inch 'stubs'. So I cut four sections of copper pipe with pipe cutters (not hack saw, this is important) to nine inch lengths and spray painted two red and two white. My 'stubs' fit exactly into the painted pipes which fit exactly into my candle holders. The indent from using traditional pipe cutters made this possible.

So for like an entire year we had nightly candles from stubs shoved into pipes that you would never know were not foot long candles. Remember me when you patent the idea.

He would drill a hole in a piece of sheet metal and freak out if the hole wasn't perfectly round. I found him onetime with three or four pieces he had cut again just to drill a hole in he disapproved of. It was a clearance hole for a bolt but that didn't matter to him.

Does the dye in the wax color the leather at all?

Posted by: FeatherBlade at February 04, 2024 02:46 PM (t1XYa)

I've done a dried the fuck out 1890's quick draw old west pistol holster and belt and a 1938 M1 Garand horse/motorcycle holster.
I warm up the wax (big ball) with a 1500 watt Mac hair drier and start working it in sections. Heat and move on. I was actually going for some color into the leather on both but didn't get what I wanted so did kiwi leather dye. The pistol holster went black and I stuck with brown on the Garand holster. I went for a spit shine on both and they didn't turn out bad.
They were both destined for the garbage when I picked them up. Estate sales. Buried in junk. I paid next to nothing and the Garand holster in way worse condition goes for around $500 on Ebay. I think the pistol holster is a one off custom job. I've never seen one quite like it. Fits my Rugers perfect.

Plumbers who work in that speciality tend to be more effluent.

176 25 Been dealing with candles like that my entire life. Not a new problem.
------
Proper wick trimming takes a good eye and practice. As a giver & not a user I admit that's not really in my skill set. The "candles" at my place are all LEDs.

177 Sears houses were cool. My mom has a whole collection of books on them. There were whole cities built out of them that are no longer there. All along the rust belt. Company towns.

178 My First World Problem for this week (actually the last five years at least) is the quality of toilet tank flappers today are complete crap. Provided they work at all when first installed, they last these days around 6 months before they start leaking. I remember the days when a flapper lasted for years, a decade or more!

Not surprising -- they get wasted every workday.

180 My FWP for the week:

The tap into my cold water supply for my humidifier is one of those shit saddle valves - you know, the ones that pierce the 1/2in copper and eventually leak.

It hasn't given me trouble yet, but it will. It's accessible but it's in the crawl space. I think I just cut it out and replace with a Sharkbite fitting.

181 Yeah, in my AO housing codes are placed there by plumber's unions, electricians unions, etc. for job security.
And they were enforced until they weren't anymore. Now if you sell your house with modifications done without a permit or inspections the realtors just calls them "bonus rooms". And they sell that way, but can't call them a bedroom.

188 Our little tortie jumped onto a table where a big fat candle was burning and somehow got her right rear fanny smack in the melted wax and took off like a bottle rocket and banked off the ceiling and raced into the bedroom and shame.

We all rocked with laughter; and she didn't speak to us for at least 24 hours. It took a couple of months for the wax to go away because we had to keep trimming it off of her as the fur sloooowly grew out.

190 Melt candles, mix in saw dust, roll in parchment paper like a long thin doobie; it will burn hotly for a long time - great to start a fire.

191 I remember making candles in grade school. Buy a box of parafin, separate two slices from the other two, stick a wick between, then press the slices back together and decorate, making sure your decorations kept the whole thing together.

193 Don't want to be rude, but wouldn't any REAL AMERICAN MAN have a Dremel to cut down the sides so they are even and then create a nice scented candle with the remains and bacon grease and gun powder.
And they say this is a site for 'Merica.
