But The Baltimore Sun’s newly announced owner has a very specific political background, and some are concerned about what the 187-year-old publication could become.“…and some are concerned…” is an example of the awful journalism that the Sun’s new ownership should seek to keep off of its pages. “Some people” is a lazy journalistic euphemism which really means “left-wing activists such as me.” NBC is not taking this news well. (This following story is actually from MSNBC, but that is the authentic, unfiltered political voice of Comcast/NBC and its various outlets.) “Why the right-wing takeover of Maryland’s largest newspaper is ringing alarm bells” [MSNBC – 01/21/2024] Sinclair Inc. Executive Chairman David D. Smith has purchased The Baltimore Sun, the largest newspaper in Maryland. As the longtime leader of the notoriously right-wing local-TV news giant, again and again Smith has used his ample resources to advance a conservative agenda. Now his potential reach will only grow.Journalists sure do seem bothered about unapproved topics and opinions not being suppressed, don’t they? John Harwood is a rabidly partisan left-wing activist who has somehow found employment as an “objective journalist” at major US media outlets. As an “objective journalist,” he is completely unhinged that a metro newspaper near Washington DC might not be a mouthpiece for the left’s agenda. • To start, it would have to embrace (John) O’Sullivan’s Law that "All organizations that are not explicitly right-wing will over time become left-wing." At a minimum, a fundamental principle of the organization would be to assertively purge it of left-wing writers and to keep left-wing bias out of news reporting. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I’d read papers if they were worth a damn. The San Antonio Express News has long descended into hackery. The Amarillo paper is what I deride as the “Amarillo Community Calendar”, because if the headlines are of any indication, they do nothing g but puff pieces instead of hard hitting journalism putting the city and county governments under a microscope.
For the most part there really is no difference between most U.S. papers and Neues Deutschland. Like other media outlets, they are simply Statist mouthpieces. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at January 29, 2024 11:06 AM (i3Uyc) 8

It's the lowest-level staff, the reporters, who decide upon the slant of a paper's journalism. Note that the Wall Street Journal has a conservative editorial position, but that its reportage is as left-leaning as any other paper of its size.

The Left has been frothing at the mouth for years over Sinclair's ownership of local TV stations, which aren't as relentlessly left-wing as the other local TV stations.
For example, it is "right-wing" and "objectively fascist" for Portland's Sinclair station to accurately document all the homeless and all the junkies in downtown Portland, since that makes left-wing governance look bad. So, Sinclair has some experience building non-Left media properties. Posted by: The ARC of History! at January 29, 2024 11:06 AM (YAtuc) 14

Right wing or not, I have real doubts about the viability of newspapers as we've come to define them. I think dead tree is well and truly dead, so online is the only way forward. However, there are other avenues to get news without the bias, e.g. this site. Granted, it's not a generator of base news, it's a commentary site, but still, in the age of ubiquitous cameras, how much of the old intermediary media is required?
The best hope is to emulate an outfit like Epoch Times, but I don't know how well they're doing financially. Posted by: Archimedes at January 29, 2024 11:08 AM (CsUN+) 23

Never gonna happen. (1) Uniform national coverage from every outlet is cheaper; it's near cost-free leftwing opinionating at this point. If you've ever been through corporate or government mandated DEI or even just old-fashioned "sensitivity" training, you know this. They call it out every time, and have for at least 15 years. It's racist to believe or ask that a black employee speak(s) for all black people. Or women. Or Asians. Or whatever. This is laid out in a black and white all the time and it's asserted as evil to assume that a member of a group represents the group. But the press and policymakers do this constantly. Of course, they would argue that it is different because Postmodern theory erases the individual and makes the group paramount (if they actually have any understanding of their working theories, anyway). Mighty rich of PMSNBC and its staff to be all concerned about who owns what. Perhaps they should be more concerned about the quality and grammar of the pieces they write. To wit, I found this MSN gem while looking for a link to the UGeorgia bat infestation:
"Bat infestation leaves University of Georgia student's horrified ©Atlanta News First / FOX 5 Atlanta / University of Georgia University of Georgia students have been disgusted to return to find their dorms have been infected by bats. Ogelthorpe House is a residence hall located near the school's central campus in Athens of about 500 students, with board running between $3,300 and $3,800." "Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them.
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. This will create a messy technical exposition where once there was straightforward clarity. Journalists may not have deep subject matter expertise (outside of specialized correspondents), but they can communicate effectively thanks to journalistic training and generalized (though moderately more superficial) expertise in multiple areas. This theory falls down on execution, just like equivalent assertions regarding teachers. These are skills in their own rights and mere subject matter expertise does not make for a good teacher *or* a good journalist. The U.S. failed to stop a deadly attack on an American military outpost in Jordan because the enemy drone approached its target at the same time a U.S. drone was also returning to base, U.S. officials said Monday. The return of the U.S. drone led to some confusion over whether the incoming drone was friend or foe, officials have concluded so far. The enemy drone was launched from Iraq by a militia backed by Tehran, U.S. officials said. The outpost, Tower 22, sits in Jordan, hard on the borders of Iraq and Syria. Posted by: Ian S. at January 29, 2024 11:22 AM (2ocoG) Well, there was also the fact that he was LARPing as a mass shooter. He was in Edmonton City Hall, a notorious den of perversion and villainy, and all he managed to do was put rounds into some walls and ceilings, and set off 2 "Molotov cocktails" which scorched a few square feet of floor. It would not surprise me at all to learn he was hired by some Edmonton council member to make them all look like "heroes" for "surviving" the assault. Anonymous sources should only be used when the person's life is truly at stake and when at least 2 people - the reporter and an editor- know the source's true identity. Otherwise, you don't quote the source.

When I was in HS, I worked at the newspaper. The old gal that owned it (and the local radio station) thought giving young men a chance to develop work ethic was philanthropy. She was pretty cool, lived in a walled in mansion, had a car collection, and a rumored kept man living in the carriage house. Dressed like the Queen Mum. Very conservative. Flash forward, the old gal dies and her daughter takes over. Daughter liked writing op eds starting with Solar Power to the People. Oberlin grad.

My bumpkin small town paper is run by Hearst and written by people too stupid to be biased. Would love it if a local citizen could run it profitably.
I'd like to see Sullivan protections extended to print media only when it's privately owned by a citizen of the community where it's published. Abolish corporate media. State courts could also strengthen the power of published legal notices which would bump the ad revenue of the local newspaper. Posted by: Jack Squat Bupkis at January 29, 2024 11:43 AM (GD2xa) 165
Journalists sure do seem bothered about unapproved topics and opinions not being suppressed, don’t they?
I blame the Founders. More directly, I blame their wording. They were two verbose and too vague, in their pursuit of a beautifully worded statement. I don't believe "freedom of the press" was intended to protect "the press" as in a group of people - but rather the freedom to use "the press", as in a printing press, by anyone with the means to do so. The first, like most of the rest of the amendments, could have and should have been more direct. In general, I don't like how they tried to preface each "what" with the "why". Many state constitutions skipped that, and simply and directly state the "what" with no preamble. Although that makes for a less enjoyable read, I also think its more clear and less prone to manipulation. This arm's length network allows both fedgov and the techlords to try to escape nasty lawsuits over libelous allegations and it also avoids the tort of interference in contracts liability for these orgs. I am a politically conservative Christian. That's my worldview. I am confident in my beliefs. But I understand there are a lot of people who don't share that worldview. They are allowed to express themselves and some of them might even be intelligent and decent. Reporters don't have that perspective at all. Having said that I'm afraid I might not have expressed myself clearly. Posted by: Northernlurker ---- You expressed yourself fine. I think that the transition from reporters to journalists is part of it. Materialism is another part of it. Old timey reporters were often skeptical because like cops, they often covered really awful situations that led to speculation of how a just Lord could permit it. Journalists, on the other hand, fully embraced the zeitgeist of universities and leftism where the state and the Dem party is worshipped instead the Lord. Good Rant.
Electronic Frontier Foundation, Jan. 24, 2024: The PRESS Act Will Protect Journalists When They Need It Most In part, "Our government shouldn’t be spying on journalists. Nor should law enforcement agencies force journalists to identify their confidential sources or go to prison. To fix this, we need to change the law. Now, we’ve got our best chance in years. The House of Representatives has passed the Protect Reporters from Exploitive State Spying (PRESS) Act, H.R. 4250, and it’s one of the strongest federal shield bills for journalists we’ve seen. Our government shouldn’t be spying on journalists. Nor should law enforcement agencies force journalists to identify their confidential sources or go to prison." ... "While journalists are well protected in many states, federal law is currently lacking in protections. That’s had serious consequences for journalists, and for all Americans’ right to freely access information." --------- One more broad Federal law of which I doubt it's to protect, for example, the journalists of the Epoch Times. The Hill, Joe Biden is our third Black president
BY Juan Williams, Opinion Contributor - 10/09/23 9:30 AM ET "Twenty-five years ago, novelist Toni Morrison famously labeled Bill Clinton as “the first Black president.” The first actual Black president, Barack Obama, would come later. But Morrison's memorable one-liner still gets laughs." FJB needs the Black vote again, they say. For 2020, it was Obama and Hillary with Rep. Jim Clyburn, SC-D, reported to have pushed him over the finish line. Now, Obama and Bill Clinton, The 1st Black President, for 2024, and then they'll bring Clyburn out once more to cinch the deal right before the election. (Clyburn was part of Nan's package deal in the House, remember?) Anyway, it'll -along with boat loads of $ - work for many women, I think, with men still being iffy. (And why NJ's King Philip the Unaccountable proposes teen voting.) Good luck finding anyone other than woke "journalists" looking to advance Democrat-Communist interests -- that's the way they're indoctrinated in J School. Just like with Republican Presidents, the rank and file employees will start undermining the new owner from day one.
Posted by: Anti-Faucist at January 29, 2024 11:13 AM (qUkBO) Plenty of talented writers out there that aren't J-School certified. I'd put this blog's own cob loggers as good examples. Posted by: Dr. Pork Chops & Bacons at January 29, 2024 12:23 PM (BdMk6) 290
I actually own/run/edit a small local weekly newspaper. Never went to j-school or had any intention of doing news...yet here I am. I run it the way I want to. I don't use AP for style...or for anything. We are ultra-local, do not cover anything national (except in my ultra-conservative column), and generally do our best to reflect the small-town rural Christian interests of the few remaining senior citizens who read our print pages.

Local news outlets would do much better at most levels if they focused primarily on their local area.

I would add a rule - let people say what they think. avoid summarizing the opinions and statements of others. Don't be afraid to have long quotes.

I subscribed to support a hopefully less idiotic BS. I was a photographer for the college paper where the graduates would work for the Sun. Posted by: KungPow at January 29, 2024 03:19 PM (Rw2Dy) 296
"10 It's the lowest-level staff, the reporters, who decide upon the slant of a paper's journalism. Note that the Wall Street Journal has a conservative editorial position, but that its reportage is as left-leaning as any other paper of its size.
Posted by: Francis W. Porretto at January 29, 2024 11:06 AM (Nmmyc)" The WSJ editorial page has become a daily Nikki Haley advertisement. Of course the usual suspects (Karl Rove, Peggy Noonan) have long been pushing for a return to Failure Theater "conservatism", but lately the letters to the editor suspiciously parrot astroturf DNC/RNC talking points about fixing "chaos" and "divisiveness" by -- you guessed it -- funding billions for the defense of Ukraine's border and none for the defense of America's. The only thing a local newspaper has to offer that you can't get fifteen other places is local news. I am amazed by the number of papers that seem to miss that point. I do genealogy and regularly read articles that are 50, 75, even 100 years old. The emphasis was local, state, then national. It's reverse that today. I suspect it because a paper can subscribe to a national service for cheap.
