Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: P&G Just Took Another $1 Billion+ Charge Against Its Odious Gillette BrandDuring the three months ended December 31, 2023, we determined that the fair value of the Gillette indefinite-lived intangible asset was less than its carrying amount. As a result, we recorded a non-cash impairment charge of $1.3 billion ($1.0 billion after tax) to reduce the carrying amount to its estimated fair value during the quarter ended December 31, 2023.P&G is also keeping the stage set for further impairment charges related to Gillette. Adverse changes in the business or in the macroeconomic environment, including foreign currency devaluation, increasing global inflation, market contraction from an economic recession and the Russia-Ukraine War, could reduce the underlying cash flows used to estimate the fair value of the Gillette indefinite-lived intangible asset and trigger a further impairment charge.Puzzlingly, the reasons P&G gave for this massive charge-off did not include lost customers. As I’ve been reading these 10-Qs each quarter, I’ve observed that P&G first blamed Gillette’s problems on Covid, before segueing into blaming the Russia-Ukraine war, but never acknowledging that a consumer boycott resulted in permanently lost sales. A little over three years ago I wrote about Gillette’s coy explanation to the SEC about its Gillette problems, and quoted this from P&G’s 10-K report for the fiscal year ending 6/30/2020: “The COVID-19 pandemic that occurred during the second half of fiscal 2020 [This means January through June 2020 because P&G’s fiscal-year-end is June 30 - Buck] resulted in a reduction in shave incidents by consumers and a weakening of certain currencies relative to the U.S. dollar, which led to a reduction in net sales for Gillette-branded products.” Yeah, that and a massive consumer boycott. Although I had been waiting for the most recent 10-Q to learn about this latest Gillette write down, the business press actually picked up the story last month, but somehow I missed it. “P&G to record up to $2.5 billion in Gillette writedown, operations revamp” [CNBC – 12/05/2023] Procter & Gamble said on Tuesday it would record up to $2.5 billion in charges over two fiscal years as it writes down the value of its Gillette business and restructures certain markets. The company’s shares fell about 2% in early trade. The consumer goods giant said it would take a $1.3 billion non-cash impairment charge before tax in the current quarter ending Dec. 31 on its Gillette business. One thing that I can’t find anywhere is information on Gillette’s market share, more specifically, how much of the market share for men’s razors it has lost since 2019. I’ve heard that it is possible to hire companies to scrub the internet of negative information, and I wonder if that has been done on behalf of Gillette and its lost market share. There is abundant information about its 21st century market share, up until the mid-20-teens at which point the search engines can’t find me any data. I’ve also contacted P&G’s media relations (mediateam.im@pg.com) and received no response to my request for Gillette market share data in 2018 and subsequent years. I even bought a couple shares of Procter & Gamble stock, and as a shareholder in the company I then requested (pginvestor.im@pg.com) market share information, but again, I received no response. It doesn’t really matter what the market share figures are, I suppose. Procter & Gamble insulted and permanently alienated its core Gillette customers, and is taking billion-dollar hit after billion-dollar hit, rather than apologizing for its slander and asking for a second chance. In conclusion, and since we’re all fans of philosophical razors around here… Gillette’s Razor: “Go woke. Go broke.” [buck.throckmorton at protonmail dot com] Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

As you’ll recall, in early 2019 Gillette released its notorious “toxic masculinity” commercial, which effectively accused its loyal customer base of being bullies and sexual predators. That ad sparked an angry backlash from men who are fed up with attacks on them, and who vowed to stop buying Gillette products. (I was – and remain - one of them.) Six months later P&G had to take an $8 billion impairment charge due to Gillette’s declining sales and the declining book value of the Gillette brand, which caused P&G to have an overall $5 billion loss that quarter.

Like you, Buck, I boycotted Gillette then and still am, and P & G products where I can. Nowadays I shave with a vintage safety razor (which, even if it is a Gillette from their glory days, puts no money in their pockets), or a modern non-G. safety razor. No Gillette-made blades or gels or foams; I use soaps or tube creams like Palmolive and Tabac, Stirling Shave Soap, Trumper's, or Taylor of Old Bond Street (TOBS), et al.

Which came first, the wokeness or the brokeness? We often point to their "Best a man can be" ad as being a turning point, and I'm sure it definitely turned off longtime customers, myself included (I traded in my old Mach3 for Barbasol Ultra 3 disposables), but P&G's first billion dollar writedown was already in the works before that ad aired. Subscription services like Dollar Shave Club and Harry's Razors had already been eating into their market share and as the top dog in the industry they had nowhere to go but down. So was the ad a serious hail-mary attempt to win back younger customers? Or was it intended to draw attention *away* from the other factors for their losses? A way to generate an excuse for the business unit's performance that would seem more like a one-time mistake than a chronic problem?

As you’ll recall, in early 2019 Gillette released its notorious “toxic masculinity” commercial, which effectively accused its loyal customer base of being bullies and sexual predators. That ad sparked an angry backlash from men who are fed up with attacks on them, and who vowed to stop buying Gillette products. (I was – and remain - one of them.) Six months later P&G had to take an $8 billion impairment charge due to Gillette’s declining sales and the declining book value of the Gillette brand, which caused P&G to have an overall $5 billion loss that quarter.
++++ And since then, their marketing has been trying in vain to undo the damage. They don't acknowledge it, but their ads since the disaster are hard in the other direction. They show men doing man things, and young guys talking with their dads about shaving and exchanging tips. It doesn't seem to be working. They've been trying for years, but two things remain true: 1. Gillette is expensive for what you get 2. Gillette made it very clear that they are more interested in satisfying the DEI drones and feminist ambition than they are in their customers. They've been trying hard to overcome point #2, but it has failed. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 26, 2024 11:31 AM (mwCIn) 142

Gillette’s Razor: “Go woke. Go broke.”
++++ I am not sure. I *think* this is probably correct, but it could be the opposite of "go broke, get woke." Gillette was facing two major market headwinds when they went whole-hog on pissing off their market: 1. They're expensive. Gillette is expensive and people were noticing how damned much they were spending on razors, and competitors started to look pretty appealing. 2. The "hipster beard" phenomenon was approaching its peak, and overall razor consumption was falling among men. Gillette was facing market problems at the same time they decided to go woke. Was going woke an effort to overcome some of those obstacles (like it has been in the cases of Victoria's Secret and Bud Light) by changing the market preference, or was it a company riding high (which Gillette still was, headwinds aside) deciding to make their core market "be better?" I am not sure. This one could be an example of either. I suspect it is "get woke, go broke" but it could be the opposite. I don't know what was in their stupid heads. 'Going broke? Go woke!' Seems to be at least a very strong trend. It may not even be intended as an appeal to a different customer base. It may be an appeal to the federal regulators. Because we now have a fascist economic system so every company is angling to prove they are the "good one" the government should pick.

And since then, their marketing has been trying in vain to undo the damage.
Since this is a razor thread, I am sure there is lots of discussion of what people use.
I recommend Dorco razors. They're a Korean brand, the value is pretty good, and they work well. I use their four-blade razor cartridges and they run me about $1.50 each online when buying them 20 at a time. They last a goodly while, they work well, they're affordable. I discovered this when DSC (which I used to use and found satisfactory) decided it hated me. I dug into it and found that Dorco is the OEM for Dollar Shave Club and a few others. I just went right to the source and never looked back. I'd rather give my money to foreign industry than to domestic firms that hate me. In my AO, I see more clean-shaven men than I did a couple years ago (though more mustaches, which seem to be coming back into vogue around here). Work-from-home certainly put downward pressure on shaving, but I am seeing some of it return following normalization. It's true that I sport a beard, a "Commander Riker" style. (No, I grew mine before Frakes showed up on the series with his. Mine was inspired by the one Robert Vaughn sported ca. 1969.) So my shaving is cheeks, lower lip (two portions), and throat, with the last requiring careful navigation.
If I ever trim off the side sections and go to a Hans Gruber look, it'll require a new learning curve to plane off the lower jawline area. I never want to be without a mustache and at least a partial beard. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 26, 2024 11:40 AM (J2vNu) 195

1. They're expensive. Gillette is expensive and people were noticing how damned much they were spending on razors, and competitors started to look pretty appealing. 2. Dorco is the supplier for Dollar Shave Club
Posted by: Heavy Meta - I was really lucky to have caught a BUNCH of sales when they were trying to get a foothold in the U.S. market. They would essentially give away their top of the line razors for nothing, maybe a dollar or two shipping for a pack of five. I bought so many neither me or my son will probably ever need to buy again. Of course the cost to build the pyramid to keep them sharp sort of cancelled out any cost savings, but still. Posted by: M. As the right has repositioned. From being the party of big business to become the party of the working man.
I don't think this is correct. Republicans, at least since Reagan, have had both "support American companies" and "support American workers" as priorities. In recent years American companies have become more and more anti-American overall but also less American. I think you can bridge this gap by opposing immigration and H1Bs and supporting tariffs as it is a slate of initiatives that will support both *American* businesses and American workers. I'm not sure an apology would have worked even at the time. That ad was not just insulting to their own customers, but basically called them scumbags, rapists, and sexual abusers. The absolute lowest of all low blows. I watched the ad and was like "this can't be real." That's how bad it was. I don't know how you recover from that.
Posted by: Elric Blade at January 26, 2024 11:56 AM (iFTx/) ++++ It comes with a major multi-pronged apology tour. 1. We're sorry. 2. We're really sorry. 3. We've fired everyone involved with this, from the CMO all the way down, purging the entire advertising and PR departments. 4. This is our short-term plan to prevent offending our customers, and the new checks and balances we're instituting immediately. 5. This is the intermediate-term plan to shift our corporate culture through aggressive customer focus and immediate termination of any employee that holds our customers in contempt. 6. This is my guarantee, as CEO, that if anything like this ever happens again, I resign immediately. 7. This is the same guarantee signed by the chairman of the board. 8. Again, we're really really really sorry and we're working to correct it. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 26, 2024 12:00 PM (mwCIn) 306

It all started happening at around the same time I guess. Lowered standards and expectations. I want anyone to come to church in whatever they have. There is also a matter of being respectful and showing reverence to the worship, and that is reflected throughout society now. If you're not destitute and you're choosing camo shorts and crocs over your button down and khaki, there are some things that need to be reconsidered. Posted by: M. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 26, 2024 11:46 AM (mwCIn) This is why I don't call it a boycott. Same thing with Bud Light. What is happening to these companies is not a "boycott." It's just plain old brand devaluation. In Gilette's case, their remaining customer base at the time had been content to keep paying higher prices for their products because it was easy and didn't require trying out new things or getting used to new razors. Myself included. The ad hastened those customers to switch. Same thing with Bud Light. I was never a Bud Light drinker, but I expect most people didn't stick with it because it was good, or even because it was cheap. But it was good enough and cheap enough and people were used to it, so they kept buying it because it was easy. But the Dylan Mulvaney episode prompted people to try something new. It might be Modelo, or it might be MIller, but whatever the case, whatever people switched to is now the new easy mode. Going back to Bud Light would take more effort. These aren't boycotts. I reverse it - Going broke? Get woke!
Getting woke is the last desperate act of a dying company. The sales are sagging, and no one can see how to reverse the trend. I know, let's try to appeal to a non-existent tiny customer base while pissing off our few loyal customers. It never works. Posted by: Garbled memo at January 26, 2024 12:45 PM (8E/8X) 343
The other thing is Gillette famous captured a majority of the market - how to make more money? easy - keep raising prices faster than inflation.
Along comes Harry and dollar shave, offering decent products at a fraction of the price. A Gillette 8 blade refill is $27. Dollar shave is $17 for eight. Harry's is $18. Posted by: Garbled memo at January 26, 2024 12:51 PM (8E/8X) 344
Yes, Gillette is hopelessly woke, as is its parent company P&G. But don't assume that all of its competitors are on the up and up, either. Harry's, for example, is at least as woke as Gillette.
BTW, it's not hard to boycott Gillette, but P&G is so ubiquitous it's difficult to avoid. P&G owns many brands and they actually seem to compete with each other. That's particularly true in the laundry product segment. Read the fine print on the product to determine if it is owned by P&G. Posted by: Ralph at January 26, 2024 01:19 PM (wnTj5) 345

Full beards held the masks about a quarter-inch from the face--viruses about the size of a horse fly would get past a mask. There's a concept called "Revolutionary suicide" where members of a cultish, utopian movement would rather go out in a mass suicide as a demonstration of their devotion rather than leave the movement and admit they failed (the Jim Jones cult is an example of this.) This seems to be what woke companies like Bud, Disney and Gillette are currently tied up in.

From a Bing search:
According to Statista, Gillette’s global brand value decreased from 7.55 billion U.S. dollars in 2021 to 6.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. In the U.S., Gillette’s market share of men’s razors and blades dropped from 52.8% in 2019 to 47.3% in 2020. One possible reason for this decline is the negative backlash to Gillette’s controversial advertising campaign in 2019, which cost the company 350 million U.S. dollars in the first six months of that year.
