THE MORNING RANT: P&G Just Took Another $1 Billion+ Charge Against Its Odious Gillette Brand
During the three months ended December 31, 2023, we determined that the fair value of the Gillette indefinite-lived intangible asset was less than its carrying amount. As a result, we recorded a non-cash impairment charge of $1.3 billion ($1.0 billion after tax) to reduce the carrying amount to its estimated fair value during the quarter ended December 31, 2023.P&G is also keeping the stage set for further impairment charges related to Gillette.
Adverse changes in the business or in the macroeconomic environment, including foreign currency devaluation, increasing global inflation, market contraction from an economic recession and the Russia-Ukraine War, could reduce the underlying cash flows used to estimate the fair value of the Gillette indefinite-lived intangible asset and trigger a further impairment charge.Puzzlingly, the reasons P&G gave for this massive charge-off did not include lost customers. As I’ve been reading these 10-Qs each quarter, I’ve observed that P&G first blamed Gillette’s problems on Covid, before segueing into blaming the Russia-Ukraine war, but never acknowledging that a consumer boycott resulted in permanently lost sales. A little over three years ago I wrote about Gillette’s coy explanation to the SEC about its Gillette problems, and quoted this from P&G’s 10-K report for the fiscal year ending 6/30/2020: “The COVID-19 pandemic that occurred during the second half of fiscal 2020 [This means January through June 2020 because P&G’s fiscal-year-end is June 30 - Buck] resulted in a reduction in shave incidents by consumers and a weakening of certain currencies relative to the U.S. dollar, which led to a reduction in net sales for Gillette-branded products.” Yeah, that and a massive consumer boycott. Although I had been waiting for the most recent 10-Q to learn about this latest Gillette write down, the business press actually picked up the story last month, but somehow I missed it. “P&G to record up to $2.5 billion in Gillette writedown, operations revamp” [CNBC – 12/05/2023]
Procter & Gamble said on Tuesday it would record up to $2.5 billion in charges over two fiscal years as it writes down the value of its Gillette business and restructures certain markets.
The company’s shares fell about 2% in early trade. The consumer goods giant said it would take a $1.3 billion non-cash impairment charge before tax in the current quarter ending Dec. 31 on its Gillette business.One thing that I can’t find anywhere is information on Gillette’s market share, more specifically, how much of the market share for men’s razors it has lost since 2019. I’ve heard that it is possible to hire companies to scrub the internet of negative information, and I wonder if that has been done on behalf of Gillette and its lost market share. There is abundant information about its 21st century market share, up until the mid-20-teens at which point the search engines can’t find me any data. I’ve also contacted P&G’s media relations (mediateam.im@pg.com) and received no response to my request for Gillette market share data in 2018 and subsequent years. I even bought a couple shares of Procter & Gamble stock, and as a shareholder in the company I then requested (pginvestor.im@pg.com) market share information, but again, I received no response. It doesn’t really matter what the market share figures are, I suppose. Procter & Gamble insulted and permanently alienated its core Gillette customers, and is taking billion-dollar hit after billion-dollar hit, rather than apologizing for its slander and asking for a second chance. I have a can of Barbasol 100th Anniversary foam, from 2019 (?). On the rare occasion I use it, it performs fine, but leaves my face feeling dry thanks to the spray-can additives. If I wash my face afterward with a shave soap like Tabac, the dryiness goes away. So I might as well use Tabac to start with.

And since then, their marketing has been trying in vain to undo the damage. They don't acknowledge it, but their ads since the disaster are hard in the other direction. They show men doing man things, and young guys talking with their dads about shaving and exchanging tips.
It doesn't seem to be working. They've been trying for years, but two things remain true:
1. Gillette is expensive for what you get
2. Gillette made it very clear that they are more interested in satisfying the DEI drones and feminist ambition than they are in their customers.
They've been trying hard to overcome point #2, but it has failed.

I find even growing out a beard a little bit is unpleasant, IMO. Hence my keeping clean shaven. Also, it’s one more thing to maintain. Take it all off, and that way that’s one less thing to mess with. But as always, YMMV.

There's a little bit of a learning curve. The multi-blade horrors require you to put some pressure on your skin for the blades to grab the hair. Safety razors require almost no pressure. Coming to the safety setup, I naturally nicked myself a few times, never badly -- maybe because I'd been using an electric (Norelco) for many years, and didn't have the muscle memory of using a 3-4 blade device.

I am not sure. I *think* this is probably correct, but it could be the opposite of "go broke, get woke."
Gillette was facing two major market headwinds when they went whole-hog on pissing off their market:
1. They're expensive. Gillette is expensive and people were noticing how damned much they were spending on razors, and competitors started to look pretty appealing.
2. The "hipster beard" phenomenon was approaching its peak, and overall razor consumption was falling among men.
Gillette was facing market problems at the same time they decided to go woke. Was going woke an effort to overcome some of those obstacles (like it has been in the cases of Victoria's Secret and Bud Light) by changing the market preference, or was it a company riding high (which Gillette still was, headwinds aside) deciding to make their core market "be better?"
I am not sure. This one could be an example of either. I suspect it is "get woke, go broke" but it could be the opposite. I don't know what was in their stupid heads.

I think the overall shaving market (not the grooming market, but the shaving market) has contracted as well. Fewer men are shaving at all, preferring to wear beards, and those that do shave are doing it less. It used to be at a corporate job you were expected to shave every day. I did. Now? I'll shave maybe twice a week.

I use a double-edged razor. I buy Wilkinson Sword Classic blades (still made in Germany, but who knows for how long). Blades are cheap and I put in a fresh blade once-a-week. I get a perfectly acceptable shave: I've come to realize that the cartridge razor is just a scam.

I think the right would be happy for the rich to enjoy their wealth at a million percent higher proportionally than the common man if the rich would simply leave the middle class alone.
I think that gives the right's antagonism towards the rich recently a different character from what is traditionally considered to be class warfare.

I have had my beard since about 1995. Except for pictures, my kid has never seen me without a beard. Itch? Use beard oil or beard balm.
I am thinking of shaving my head however. Never done that, so I'm a little worried about nics.

I recommend Dorco razors. They're a Korean brand, the value is pretty good, and they work well. I use their four-blade razor cartridges and they run me about $1.50 each online when buying them 20 at a time. They last a goodly while, they work well, they're affordable. I discovered this when DSC (which I used to use and found satisfactory) decided it hated me. I dug into it and found that Dorco is the OEM for Dollar Shave Club and a few others. I just went right to the source and never looked back.
I'd rather give my money to foreign industry than to domestic firms that hate me.

It comes and goes. The "hipster beard" thing is receding, just as the "scruffy grunge" thing did. It's cyclical. In my AO, I see more clean-shaven men than I did a couple years ago (though more mustaches, which seem to be coming back into vogue around here). Work-from-home certainly put downward pressure on shaving, but I am seeing some of it return following normalization.
I suspect there may have been a modest secular shift toward less shaving, but I doubt the effect is crippling. I don't know for sure, of course - I am not in the facial hair research industry.

Also 1b: subscription services like Dollar Shave Club and Harry's Razors made replacing your blades easy and painless. The convenience of not having to go to the store and pick up blades sold a lot of people to switch long before the woke ad. The ad was definitely a mistake but the first billion dollar writedown was already going to happen without it.
This new writedown, on the other hand... well, I'm sure I'm not the only one who went out and found an alternative to his Mach3 because of that ad.

My "29" is way in the rear view mirror too. My reason for shaving only every 48 hours, though, is because the hairs are then longer and easier for the blade to slice. At least I feel like I wind up with a closer andmore comfortable shave than if I planed the phiz off every 24 hours.

I was really lucky to have caught a BUNCH of sales when they were trying to get a foothold in the U.S. market. They would essentially give away their top of the line razors for nothing, maybe a dollar or two shipping for a pack of five. I bought so many neither me or my son will probably ever need to buy again.
Of course the cost to build the pyramid to keep them sharp sort of cancelled out any cost savings, but still.

I don't think this is correct.
Republicans, at least since Reagan, have had both "support American companies" and "support American workers" as priorities.
In recent years American companies have become more and more anti-American overall but also less American.
I think you can bridge this gap by opposing immigration and H1Bs and supporting tariffs as it is a slate of initiatives that will support both *American* businesses and American workers.

Heh, honestly though, it wasn't the money. I only shave my neck and don't go through razors fast. I liked the Mach3 because it's easy to clean just by dipping it into a stream of water; so it doesn't require a lot of effort between each stroke of the razor. Finding a replacement wasn't easy, but I settled on Barbasol Ultra 3 disposables. Manufactured by Dorco, who Joe Mannix mentioned above. Just as smooth, just as easy to clean, works like a charm for me. That they are way cheaper is just icing on the cake.

Yea, only way it might have worked is if Gillette claimed it was a rouge ad agency, or one rouge marketing exec, and immediately fired all responsible, catapulted them off the roof of their headquarters, and salted the Earth where their desks were. Of course, just like with Butt Like that would have been bullshit scapegoating, but it would have been the only thing that had any chance of working.

It all started happening at around the same time I guess. Lowered standards and expectations.
I want anyone to come to church in whatever they have. There is also a matter of being respectful and showing reverence to the worship, and that is reflected throughout society now. If you're not destitute and you're choosing camo shorts and crocs over your button down and khaki, there are some things that need to be reconsidered.

Nothing wrong with that if it works. Different textures and coarseness allows for that, and only needing to use it a couple of times a week would certainly be a bonus. Condition of the razor, too.

This is why I don't call it a boycott. Same thing with Bud Light. What is happening to these companies is not a "boycott." It's just plain old brand devaluation. In Gilette's case, their remaining customer base at the time had been content to keep paying higher prices for their products because it was easy and didn't require trying out new things or getting used to new razors. Myself included. The ad hastened those customers to switch.
Same thing with Bud Light. I was never a Bud Light drinker, but I expect most people didn't stick with it because it was good, or even because it was cheap. But it was good enough and cheap enough and people were used to it, so they kept buying it because it was easy. But the Dylan Mulvaney episode prompted people to try something new. It might be Modelo, or it might be MIller, but whatever the case, whatever people switched to is now the new easy mode. Going back to Bud Light would take more effort.
These aren't boycotts.

BTW, it's not hard to boycott Gillette, but P&G is so ubiquitous it's difficult to avoid. P&G owns many brands and they actually seem to compete with each other. That's particularly true in the laundry product segment. Read the fine print on the product to determine if it is owned by P&G.
