Seeing the big old castle, and the smaller, newer not-exactly castles buildings in front, it reminds me of old farmhouses where you see campers and rusted out cars on the property.
Someone lived in the big house, and they're ne'er do well kids and cousins just sorta squattered in front of it, never leaving until they were carted off by the undertaker. Posted by: BurtTC at January 24, 2024 07:30 PM (4C+Ag) 9

The penguin is mentioned in this place only under a hope, in some measure, of rescuing its character from the extreme degree of odium with which it is loaded, in consequence of the supposed injury that it commits by feeding upon porn. This bird is by no means without its utility, even to the very persons who incessantly seek its destruction. On a calculation made by the late Professor Bradley, it was ascertained that a pair of penguins, during the time they have young ones, destroy on average over 3360 caterpillars every week.

Replacing a roof? Wait for a hailstorm or thunderstorm with winds of +50 mph.
Find a local, factory affiliated roofer (Certain-Teed, GAF, Owens-Corning, etc.) that has high rated reviews, and have 'em inspect the roof, in order to tell you IF you would have a successful insurance claim, or not. If yes, then file the claim with your insurer, and HAVE that contractor ON THE ROOF with the Insurance Adjuster, on the day the claim is examined. IF the claim is accepted. Your new roof is the price of your deductible, and that's that. You win, the roofer wins, and yes, even the insurer wins. How? With a new roof, the insurer won't also be paying water damage claims from leaks, weeks or months down the road. For them, the new roof saves them from much worse, later. ..I love the old houses here with hip roofs, but I know they are more expensive to redo. Posted by: Notsothoreau at January 24, 2024 08:28 PM (L8hCM)
The basic "hip roof" is the most hurricane/wind resistant design. It is at the gables under the even simpler "pitched" roof, where the fingers of high winds can sneak in, grab a handful, and tear that roof right off of the house. Sure, a "pitched" roof with it's two simple slopes and one ridge is easier to re-shingle. A basic, four-sloped hip roof has four corresponding ridges. Pro-tip on ridges. INSIST on 30 (or greater) year RIDGE shingles, and don't let the roofer cut 20 year roofing into "thirds" to use as "ridge." The Bernoulli Effect accelerates wind as it turns across the ridges, and those should be the thickest shingles on your roof, and not the thinnest! ------ That sounds like a mini Winchester Mystery House... ||Winchester Mystery House is a mansion in San Jose, California, that was once the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, the widow of firearms magnate William Wirt Winchester. The house became a tourist attraction nine months after Winchester's death in 1922. The Victorian and Gothic-style mansion is renowned for its size and its architectural curiosities.|| She thought that if the house was ever completed, that the ghosts of Winchester "victims" would haunt it/her or she'd die so she had builders do crazy things like that although the Wiki [tries to!] debunk that. http://tinyurl.com/2e325m9z Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at January 24, 2024 08:37 PM (2yu8s) 172

I think the sensible change is to award EC votes based on congressional districts.
Posted by: Jamaica That helps odd-numbered states disproportionately. AK, ND, SD, and WY each have only 1 district, so presumably all 3 of their EC votes go the the same guy every time. (DC, too.) HI, ID, ME, MO, NH, RI, and WV each have 2 districts, so if they split one each way, presumably the 2 extra votes for their senators also split one each way, and those states are now worth a net zero votes, unless there's a "landslide" where the same candidate wins both districts. 5-vote states will be worth either 5 votes (landslide) or, most likely, 1 vote when they split 2+1/1+1. Same for every other EC vote count. The odd-numbered states can't split evenly, so they're always worth at least 1 net EC vote. Even-numbered states can split 50/50 and be worthless in the EC. Any state in the "big democrat city that runs it all, barely, with republicans everywhere else" situation will either be +1 for the democrats, or an even split. On the other hand, CA and NY probably only gain the D's a handful of votes, rather than 54+28. On the gripping hand, TX and FL aren't worth 40+30 R's, either. Posted by: Helena Handbasket at January 24, 2024 09:24 PM (llON ![]() Then, find that local, highly rated, factory affiliated roofer, and arrange for an inspection. This is vital, before you *ever* let an insurance adjuster go up there. You have a year from the date of the storm. (make sure you KNOW that date!) And, if a Declared Disaster (i.e., hurricane, most tornados), then you have two years. Hail storms damage by impacts, breaking the fiberglass under the asphalt, and loosening the finely-ground stone aggregate atop the asphalt. And the sun will then eat right through that shingle in short order. Wind damage, will lift shingle edges, unglue the seals, and often tear pieces of shingles, or whole shingles, right out of the roof. Let that trusted local contractor take a look, take a lot of pictures to show you, and you'll be in an informed position to make decisions. Back in my hometown a coterie of AWFLs and Karens of both sexes had been pushing for years to retire the HS mascot and name -- "Redmen" -- for being too racist and demeaning to Native Americans. After battering away for years on this "important and hurtful issue", the virtue signalers finally won out last year, amid a tremendous gale of rage and recriminations. The battle moved on to, "What should the new name / mascot be?" and "Let's let the kids decide!" The former effort was marked by ferocious rear guard actions by the AWFLs and Karens to NOT let the discarded name be among the choices. As best I can tell, the latter was simply a bare-faced lie, as the As & Ks already knew what the best and most appropriate choices ought to be. There was no vote. Now, I frankly did not, and do not, care what name or mascot the HS team has -- I left that school over fifty years ago and I have not resided in the town for nearly fifty years. I had nothing useful to say on those "pressing" issues. I was, however, mightily pissed that the twin scourges of AWFLness and Karenhood had infested my former town and that the bulk of them were outsiders who had come to make the place a good place to live. Gosh, I thiught that had long been the case, and as time has passed and the "orhers" have shown up, matters had degraded, rather than improved. So, the new name is "Sentinels" and one of the AWFLs on the school board suggested that a Greek or Roman soldier might become the mascot, only to have "Who's appropriating a culture, now?" hurled back into her face. I decided to shit post on the topic because, "fook them all". I posted a still photo of the monolith (the sentinel) and apes from "2001, A Space Odyssey" in the FB thread with the snarky remark, "Sentinel mascot problem solved! No need to thank me. Be sure to check with the estates of Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick to secure rights to use it." And I left; a Shit Midas triumph for the left.
