A few months ago, I had lunch with a co-worker and a friend of his who works in another division. The guys were catching up, commiserating, and the friend happened to mention that he's paying four car notes and four cell phone bills. "I'm sorry, what? Why four?"

He has a daughter in college and another who's graduated and is living and working in another state. He's paying both of their car notes, another for himself and a fourth for his wife, and of course everyone's cell phone and unlimited data. That is how you spend $6,000 a month.

Keyword insertions are kind of the thing these days. It's not really a secret.

If the job you are interviewing for says you must have skills with a left-handed screwdriver, your resume damn well better have the words "left-handed screwdriver" in it.

And you do say "I used" or "I was trained on." You say "proficient," or say you were an expert or whatever. You initiated, your planned, you implemented. Action words. Use them.

Because as often as not, a machine is reading your resume, not a human.

Evenin' Horde. Feeling grateful tonight in spite of a lousy day at work. Yesterday a tree from my property fell into the neighbors' back yard. Miraculously, it didn't hit anything. This morning the tree guys (who I'd already scheduled to come look at some limbs on my yuge luxurious tree that are too close to the roof) said they couldn't take on the job I had originally called about. But they cut up the fallen tree and dragged it out of the neighbors' yard into mine, and referred me to the best tree service to take care of all my [tree] problems. Didn't charge me a penny and wouldn't even take the twenties I offered. Tonight the neighbors called in response to the note I'd left yesterday to thank me for taking care of it.

A little story for the software geeks, all others feel free to skip.

A couple of years ago we interviewed a guy whose resume said he was an "expert" with C. The job didn't require C but I thought "Oh cool, something we can talk about." So I wrote a dozen or so lines of code on the whiteboard and asked him to analyze it for what should have been obvious problems. He asked me what two functions I used were. Those two? malloc() and free().

That's always my preferred method, too, but I've never seen anyone make lists like this using median.

And like I said in #251, I think this one is way off and probably not in a good way. They say a mortgage is $1200, but Rocket Mortgage:

A lot of this was adjudicated years ago, and I recall at one point Sarah Michelle Gellar in particular said she was flattered, that she'd seen many pics of herself as fake nudes, and wished her body looked that good.

If I remember correctly, the courts didn't support efforts by celebs to pursue any kind of legal action against the producers of fake nudes (or even fake sex scenes).

Then had to wait about 20 minutes for his wife to get home, because he didn't want them to give the news to him before she heard it.

But they are talking the average ... many people either have no mortgage left, or got their mortgage a decade ago, and it is much lower. Currently acquired mortgages are at much higher rates, as of the last couple years.
