Alec Baldwin Indicted on Two Counts Including Manslaughter in Rust Shooting
Sports Illustrated to Fire Most or All of Its Staff

If he pleads insanity, he skates. Easily.

He's been preparing for the role of "mentally unbalanced rage-case" all his life.

A commenter says:

>>>Baldwin shot 2 people but one lived if memory serves...
Why 2 counts?

Oh, yeah. Maybe I have that wrong, maybe it's two counts, one for manslaughter and one for aggravated assault.

Oli London
@OliLondonTV

Alec Baldwin has been charged with involuntary manslaughter by a New Mexico grand jury, more than two years after shooting cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his ill-fated western film Rust.

Baldwin could face a maximum of 18 months in jail if convicted.

Previous charges, filed by New Mexico prosecutors, were dismissed in April last year.

Sports Illustrated is laying off a "significant" number of its employees, or all of them.

I wonder why this happened.

Update: It appears that the company that owns the SI trademark has been licensing it out to another company, which turned it into a transgender/morbid obesity propaganda vehicle. I guess that doesn't sell (go figure), and so the company that owns the SI trademark is revoking the license. Thus everyone working to produce the SI-branded transgender morbid obesity magazine is now fired.

This:

@Doc_0

In addition to the totalitarian urge to blast political messages in everyone's faces from every corner of media space, the sad fate of Sports Illustrated is a result of the Woke determination to ensure nothing, anywhere, ever caters to straight men. It's a scorched-earth crusade.

The leftwing women and leftwing gay men who control culture feel that anything that appeals to straight men is debased and meritless, and can only be redeemed to the extent it can be twisted into an endless propaganda conveyor belt for THE MESSAGE.

Why is every Star Wars and Marvel movie a woke feminist leftwing sermon? Because they don't like straight men having any pleasures in life, and will only lower themselves to produce something "for straight men" if it can be justified as a propaganda vehicle for leftwing indoctrination.

Which makes for shit stories, and the people doing it are generally unskilled. If you want to play this game, you need to be subtle about it or the people you're trying to corrupt will just reject you.

Well, the rejection is on. Hollywood is in trouble. Disney is the biggest example, but it's by no means alone.

How long until Hollywood lobbies the government to ban cultural imports? They're going to start getting their lunches eaten by the Asians. It's already happened in comics, it's starting in TV and movies are bringing up the rear but have real potential.

Pushing propaganda 24/7 isn't helpful if nobody watches it. To make sure they watch it, they're going to need to start restricting the market. It won't be censorship, though, it will be "trade policy."

45 On SI, since I had the news earlier...

I hadn't realized they had already dropped to monthly issues, after dropping to biweekly issues.

One wonders if the license was revoked early (b/c it was supposed to last 10 years, which I think would have been til 2029, b/c they got an "at least 10 year deal" in 2019) b/c of the trans stuff or b/c they weren't paying whatever annual/monthly fee might have been required. I mean, do you pay all up front for a license...or do you have yearly payments?

I'm betting the latter...and I'm betting SI was deadbeats...b/c if they weren't, I don't see how you can revoke a deal over just "image" problems...maybe you can...but in this environment, it would be hard. But not paying the bill - that's an easy revoke...

It's happened before. When the studio system fell apart, a big hole in the box office was filled with foreign stuff. La Dolce Vita was #3 at the box office in 1960, a three hour Italian film about a man who succumbs to ennui (also, Anita Ekberg had very large gazongas).

We're seeing similar things with Korean content dominating Netflix, like Squid Game.

It's interesting to watch.

59 On SI, I made a version of this comment earlier and I think it's pretty close to the mark.

Kind of like Victoria's Secret, SI was caught by shifting preferences and new sources of competition. I think it is another case of "go broke, get woke" - and another case of it failing. It always fails. "Get woke, go broke" has a spottier track record of failure and some outfits have done well with it. "Go broke, get woke," though, seems to fail every time.

The other factor is that it's a press outlet and those are 100% on board with destruction no matter what, but I suspect the primary motivation was an ill-conceived attempt to save a declining brand by pivoting to the Tumblr crowd that makes itself appear way bigger than it really is.

It's very much a throwback to when entertainment was entertaining. And surprisingly good considering it just doesn't take itself seriously.

They actually demonstrate how you can have "inclusion" in your show without it mattering at all. It is very explicit though including the now mandatory Male Nudity but there is plenty of feminine eye candy too. Maybe ace has already covered it. If not he should.

In the original King Kong (1933), there is a scene in which Kong, rampaging through New York, looks into the window of an apartment building, and sees a sleeping woman whom he mistakes for his beloved Anne Darrow (the Fay Wray character). He reaches into the window and pulls the woman out, only to realize that she is not Fay. So he drops her to her death.

The actress who played the unfortunate woman was Veronica Cooper, Gary's wife at the time.

At it's height, the Swimsuit issue would sell 15 times more copies than a regular issue plus they could charge bocoup bucks for advertising in that issue alone.

So they could make 1 Billion dollars off of the swimsuit issues through direct sales and other ancillary income streams.

So throwing away the Swimsuit Issue is akin to Disney buying Lucas Films for 4 Billion dollars and and then flushing it all directly down the toilet.

151 However, some critics of the scavenger turned Jedi in training have argued that she falls into the “Mary Sue” category, a term typically used to describe a female character who is unrealistically perfect.

During Wednesday’s installment of MTV News’ Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz asked Ridley for her opinion on the backlash and whether she believes Rey fits the mold of the stereotypical characterization.

“The Mary Sue thing in itself is sexist because it’s the name of a woman,” Ridley said. “Everyone was saying that Luke had the exact same [capabilities]. I think Rey is incredible vulnerable, and nothing she’s doing is for the greater good. She’s just doing what she thinks is the right thing. And she doesn’t want to do some of it, but she feels compelled to do it. So for me, I was just confused.”

At it's height, the Swimsuit issue would sell 15 times more copies than a regular issue plus they could charge bocoup bucks for advertising in that issue alone.

So throwing away the Swimsuit Issue is akin to Disney buying Lucas Films for 4 Billion dollars and and then flushing it all directly down the toilet.

Yeah, but responding to Ridley's comments is pointless. One or both of two things is going on:

191 >>>(it's missing something w/o the Van Halen backing track from the original, though. Must have lost copyrights.)

I think I know what's going on. All TV stations can play music through the "automatic licensing" provisions of the law. ASCAP and BMI count the number of plays that radio and tv stations play songs, and they figure out how much the song's copyright holders are owed.

Radio stations don't have to clear the rights to play songs-- they just report what they played every week or whatever, then they cut a check to ASCAP or BMI and those corporations send checks to the individual song copyright holders.

But there is no "automatic licensing" provision if you package the song into a Best of video. For that, you'd have to negotiate with the rights holder.

I think it may be something like that.

New Mexico code
"Involuntary manslaughter consists of manslaughter committed in the commission of an unlawful act not amounting to felony, or in the commission of a lawful act which might produce death in an unlawful manner or without due caution and circumspection."

An example of an unlawful act would be pointing a firearm at another which is a crime called brandishing but the second part recognizes the exception for lawful use like for a movie but if death results from a lack of due caution and circumspection, then you are still guilty even if you never intended for someone to get hurt.

If you mean Tuco the character (who survives GBU, right?) later changed his name to Calvera and took to banditry on the border? That works.

Eh. Luke had the Force when he pushed those torpedoes in the thermal exhaust port. His training with Yoda in V was a few weeks, at most, probably just a few days.

And Luke failed miserably in a lightsaber duel with an old man on an oxygen tank.

I think Episode V should have been titled The Humiliation of Luke Skywalker.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison, walking with hope in America with Frank Capra at January 19, 2024 04:14 PM (GBKbO)

I was under the impression that Luke was using the Force to time his shot and aim(hence the targetting computer bit) not direct the shot.

At any rate, the general treatment of Luke or the Force in general in the OT and older expanded universe books focused on the time period around after the OT tend to do a lot less flashy stuff than what came later. In other words, there's tons of power creep, including stuff attributed to OT characters like the Emperor. Likely no one watching Episode VI thought that the Emperor was using the Force to control the course of the space battle or that he was capable of concealing the process of burying a Super Star Destroyer in Coruscant from all the people living there.

Oh, she did. I'm just saying that Luke was no sort of superhuman. He lost to Vader after his first dose of training.

Rey beat Kylo Ren upon their first meeting and her first igniting of a saber. I think the film does it reasonably well (Kylo is way over confident and opens himself up), though.

And yet, to say that Rey was similarly powered to Luke is just the sort of thing a low-IQ actress shoved into a fandom she doesn't care about would say.

Posted by: Mark1971 at January 19, 2024 04:04 PM (xPl2J)

He had no business pointing the gun at the person he ended up killing. If he'd shot whichever actor he was supposed to be pointing it at, I suspect that would have been entirely on the armorer.

Uh, they were blocking a shot. The director and the cinematographer were trying to get an idea of what the viewer would see. IMHO, it is the only time you can point a gun at someone you do not intend to shoot.

I am not a criminal lawyer, but I think that in the jurisdictions that I am licensed in, yes, it would have been on the armorer, not the actor. I believe that is what happened in the case of Brandon Lee. (Fun fact - I auditioned for the part of the guy who shot Lee. Didn't get the role)

However, New Mexico law apparently gives the duty of every person who handles a dangerous instrumentality to handle it safely,

As producer, Baldwin has a legal obligation that is different than that of an actor. So correspondingly, the two elements that seem to be into play are a lack of due caution (failure to follow industry stds for safe handling) and lack of circumspection (which I believe in New Mex law is equivalent to reasonableness) in Baldwin's behavior with a potentially lethal weapon as in pointing it needlessly at another human.

264 There are basic rules whenever you have a gun in your hand. You alwasy always treat it as loaded. This was a run through of a scene. There was no reeason to pull the trigger. It was a revolver and not an automatic so it is even more deliberate to pull the trigger. Baldwin tried to say that he never pulled the trigger. It was proven that that was impossible for the gun to just go off.
This was not his first time handling a gun on a movie set.

287 So every actor who is handed a gun on a movie set has to remove the magazine, take out every round and make sure they are all blanks (and have the expertise to determine this), reload the magazine, and reinsert it?

I think the generally accepted good practice is 1) to have enough weapons training to know what should be done, 2) participate with the armorer when the weapon is loaded, inspecting everything, etc; 3) lockup/tagout the now blanks-loaded weapon until it is handed to the actor.

What should not be done is what they did on Rust: hiring an inexperienced armorer and having operational guns and live ammo where they were shooting (they were doing some plinking earlier)

THE MESSAGE is what woke people say it is, it changes. But it has nothing to do with story, plot, or characterization at all.

For example in the Star Wars THE MESSAGE is that women are super superior to men, and men must be humiliated. In the Black Cleopatra documentary, THE MESSAGE was that all history was a lie and black race dynamics in Egypt are identical to modern US despite a total lack of blacks.

295 Its become almost a joke of the hero facing the main villain...failing...then coming back and beating him but Rey skips that.

Imagine if in The Empire Strikes Back Luke easily kills Vader and then teleports to the Emperor and kills him too. Would the movie have been interesting? Not really.

He was given a real dilemma - continue his training and his friends die or leave to save them any maybe die himself. And...he comes close to dying.

This was repeated in the "prequels" with Anakin's fight with Count Dooku. In "Clones" he loses badly, even losing an arm. In "Revenge of the Sith" he tells Dooku that his powers have doubled since their last meeting and gives Dooku a curb-stomp battle which ends when Anakin cuts off Dooku's head. Thus signaling his path toward the Dark Side.

Some of them are: Women can never learn anything from a man. Men can never save women. A man can never be right in an argument with a woman.

At a minimum, you would be on the hook for massive wrongful death lawsuits because of a duty to check a lethal weapon before pointing it at a person and the obvious foreseen circumstances of the firearm killing someone if you pull the trigger. Blanks themselves have killed or seriously injured people used in an unsafe manner.

At worst, you would face criminal charges like Alec boy here is even if you had no malicious intent. Foolish behavior is not really tolerated much in American civil or criminal law.

Nor is merely fist fighting even if consensual. If someone dies from that fight, look forward to being jailed and sued.

She gets the sacred Jedi texts at the end of The Last Jedi and is studying them at the beginning of the Rise of Skywalker.

The idea that the jedi had become ossified and weak without any real connection to the Force anymore was an idea planted in the prequels (namely III) and touched on in The Last Jedi (when Yoda asks Luke if he's ever read the texts).

Actually it was his job. He was the producer of the movie as well as the actor. As producer, he is responsible for what he the actor and his employee armorer does.

That is why civil liability was baked into the cake. The criminal charge deals with whether he behaved reasonably and whether he took due precautions as the producer/actor. Thus, firing the prior armorer and hiring an cheaper inexperienced one, failure to establish rules such as forbidding staff use of the firearms to plink with live bullets during off time, and failure to attend mandatory safety briefings may come back to bite him in the ass. Then there is the disputed information that he said something stupidly threatening to the director before he pulled the trigger.

Depends on the jury seated most likely and whether the judge allows a defense that the weapon itself was altered during the state and FBI investigation. Not sure that playing the actor card defense that others were responsible works if he was the producer of the movie.

Not according to Hollywood's official procedures for on-set firearms safety.

Seriously, they've got a whole bunch of procedures for "How To Not Accidentally Shoot Someone on Set". Having the know-nothing actors check weapons they know nothing about, to make sure that the ammunition they know nothing about is the right ammunition (which why wouldn't be able to do because they - say it with me - know nothing about it) is not part of them.

That's why you need a competent armorer.

391 In the first movie, Luke is a boy and gets derided as such by one of the main characters. He depends on others a good deal, and has a few moments to shine that involve shooting, a skill the film lays a backstory for, and succeeds on the important one with the aid of the force.

In the second movie, he goes to train with the preeminent swamp muppet, struggles as a student, leaves before his training is complete, and gets his ass handed to him by daddy.

Only in the third movie does Luke really come into his own. He's powerful and skilled. But even then, he has mishaps. He doesn't know Jabba isn't susceptible to Jedi mind tricks, for example, until Jabba laughingly tells him so. And some standard stormtrooper motorbikers still present a challenge.

It sounds like Ridley didn't even watch these movies.

Eh, 25 is nothing. Well for pussy journalists I guess it's something.

This reminds of Adam Carolla who was talking about how cold his car got because where he lives it gets into the 40s at night. And he wants to get a remote starter so the car isn't "freezing" when he gets in it. I'm like dude I don't even bother with the car heat if it's in the 40s. Southern Californians are funny when it comes to cold weather.

My nephew as a young lad with his grandfather that should have known better was nearly seriously injured by shooting and exploding Tannerite in an old dead tree. The tree itself came apart in fragments.

We used something similar to Tannerite to blow up concrete runways to deny access to enemies back in AF Civil Engineering days. Not the stuff to FAFO with.

429 Seriously, they've got a whole bunch of procedures for "How To Not Accidentally Shoot Someone on Set". Having the know-nothing actors check weapons they know nothing about, to make sure that the ammunition they know nothing about is the right ammunition (which why wouldn't be able to do because they - say it with me - know nothing about it) is not part of them.

That's why you need a competent armorer.
Posted by: FeatherBlade at January 19, 2024 04:41 PM (ou9hh)

The reason there's supposed to be a "competent armorer" is to reduce the risk of an accidental discharge, not to completely eliminate the risk. There's a difference. Baldwin was responsible for his actions on or off the set.

But, trannie normalization is well underway.

I had a checkup at the doctors office and their new receptionist is a Trannie of the Fake Girl Kind.

No blue hair but -
Obese -check
Bearded - check
Wearing a goofy flowery dress with a scoop neck and puff sleeves - check
Woman's hair-do - check
Speaking in a man's voice with femme-affectations - check
Wearing a face mask - check

It was gross. And frankly unprofessional.

The role of a receptionist is to greet the patients and especially in a doc's office make him/her feel comfortable in the office environment.

Presenting an insane person as your receptionist calls into question your dedication to proper medical treatment. Are you here to provide the best medical care possible or are you here to push woke crapola on your patients. Not to mention the creepy factor, which at best is disturbing to your clientele.

Plus, this is a family clinic and you're going to expose kids to that?Make Mom or Dad have top explain that to their kiddo?

Anyway Welcome to Your Garbage World Future!

Yes. 1000x yes. I am a relative newbie but the first thing drilled into one's head is that you are responsible for the firearm that is in your hand. If he had checked the chamber the way he was supposed to, he wouldhave seen that the gun was loaded. you never have your finger on the trigger unless you intend to shoot the gun. you never point the gun at a target unless you intend to shoot. You certainly make sure there is no one behind the target.

444 didn't watch the latter two Rey movies, but depending on how that's handled that might not really be ought of scope.

Powerful Sith Lords traditionally hang out of after death as powerful and possibly insane ghosts.

Body-hopping and devouring the life force of entire planets(and the people living on them) are both Dark Side methods of immortality.

Force time travel after a fashion(been a while since I read stuff dealing with that but I don't think it's quite as flexible as a time machine).
Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at January 19, 2024 04:38 PM (eYoxG)

Well for one thing Disney declared all the Extended universe books and comics non canon before their movies, so those can't be used to defend what might happen. Only what is mentioned in the movies.

Force ghosts exist, sure, in the OT but this is NOT what happened. Rae raises Kylo Ren from the dead, physically in the third movie and he somehow returns the favor and dies of a broken heart or something.

The real issue besides woke stupidness in the Disney series is the two producers were having a pissing match ignoring the story hooks of the other then putting them back in the third movie.

I hear good authority that meat puppets are too stupid to know how to properly handle firearms (despite many states issuing small game licenses to 12 year olds).
Meat puppets are also too stupid to operate motor vehicles which are far more complex and dangerous than any non-crew operated firearm.

Meat puppets have to be kept in when it rains otherwise they would look up to see what is tapping them on the head and drown from the rain falling in their open mouths.

Everyone was tired, and Alec didn’t want to do yet another take, so he pointed the weapon he had for the scene to “shoot” the director. To everyone’s surprise, the real revolver was loaded with real ammunition, so the “oh yeah?” moment turned to tragedy.

But he really did point the gun at the director and he really did pull the trigger. He just expected the gun to shoot a blank. Everything else he says is BS.
