It is always good to hear from Lirio100. She's very talented and I always enjoy seeing the finished product of her hobby.

I did this one in the very late 1970's, originally as a gift for my mom. The bouquet is about 14 inches tall, and done on hardanger cloth at 22 stitches per inch. The design is by Jean McIntosh; although her company went out of business some years ago the patterns are widely available on etsy, of all places. They're rather old fashioned, in a way. Current designs went in another direction, I guess.

7 My current hobby is looking at houses for sale on Realtor and Zillow. Not every abode for sale in America is unaffordable. I have a list of features I'd like to have for my ideal home, and a shorter and more realistic list of the must-haves. With any luck my eventual choice will fall between the two points.

After my entire life in rentals, I have to get over the idea that the house as seen in the photos on R or Z is the way it will remain. Continually I have to remind myself that I can paint boring white walls or repaint purple walls, that I can have carpet replaced with laminate flooring, etc.

9 I finished refurbishing the fuel tank for the old Fiat . I finally had a day warm and enough to paint it and the pieces. It's ready to go in, but I don't really want to bench press it right now. Maybe tomorrow.

This is one of those things where you would never want to have to pay somebody to do what I had to do to that tank. $2K+ probably. More than I paid for the car.

10 That needlepoint bouquet is wonderful. Mrs. JTB tells me that 22 stitches to the inch is very fine. I assume you would need a magnifier for such a fine weave.

13 MisHum, I just sent you a picture of what came out of that fuel tank. It had a powerfully unique smell, like old gas poured on old sneakers and then fermented for 30 years.

19 Still under the Corvair. Taking longer than I thought. Finished all the painting under there, looks very nice and cleaned up. Yesterday had some parts arrive from Clark's Corvair. Installed 4 new bushings for the stabilizer bar on the front suspension. Wasn't easy. The two inner bushings have to be shoved on about a foot, past 2 90 degree bends. Lube and pounding won the day, but they're just rubber, so you need to be a little careful, too. Outer ones are thicker and beefier, but also a bear to get on.
Then I went to lube the 15 or so grease fittings and the little grease gun won't pump. Worked last time I used it. Will go buy another tomorrow. Phooey!
On the upside, I had put aside a 100 bulb string of Christmas lights that quit working. After changing the little fuses and about 6 bulbs, they are working again. I'll take a win wherever I can get one.

24 What a lovely piece of cross stitch, thank you for sharing it. My mom got into it after she gave us smoking -- gave her something to do. She was actually pretty good at it and I have a couple of pieces that I don't hang up but I don't want to part with. I don't have the patience for that kind of stitching.

It's not hard. Just get one and start blowing on it. Pick something easy and sound it out. I can play the heck out of Oh My Darling Clementine. I can also play the Star Spangled Banner and other stuff, and can make some honking noises to accompany other music too.

I used to practice while driving around. That's a great place. Other people DO NOT want to hear you learn to play. I'm not particularity good at it, but it's fun.

33 I was on the front porch for Winter Field Day. The weather here is cloudy but mild. I made one whole official WFD contact; there was plenty of activity, but it was either too faint or it was a pile-up. I don't have a contesting rig, so I tend to avoid busy portions of the bands. In any event, it was nice to put a couple more entries into the log. I dream of having a proper shack one day.

I bought this Corvair from someone who had started a renovation. He only sold this one because he bought another more desirable Corvair that needed less work. The one he found was a Spyder with the turbo 140HP engine. He had replaced the floor, but more importantly had installed a NEW gas tank. That was a big deal to me, as they are expensive and a real bear to install. I did refurbish and reuse the gas tank on my VW bus last year. The 2 inch space between the tank and the firewall was filled with large acorns, obviously VERY old. Might be from a half century ago. You couldn't see them til you pulled the engine, then tank.

There is an interesting video of Neil Young from the 60's playing Heart of Gold live where he's rifling through his pockets for the the correct harmonica.

That's a good way to get into it. That's some major work already done.

There are no new tanks for my car though, so I had to make the old one work.

Well, yeah, you can transpose any song, and they do have song books with many songs already transposed into a particular key.

But still, I would recommend getting a couple harmonica's in major and minor key's.

48 Thank you everyone! I didn't need a magnifier when I did that, but sometimes use one now. I prefer the higher count fabric because it gives a smoother effect, almost like painting. I have one piece I just need to finish the border on--it's a scene using the battle of rabbits and snails from a medieval manuscript. Apparently that was a thing for marginalia back then...

51 There's a YT channel called Classical Odyssey which deals with pen and ink drawing which I'm finding helpful. One aspect is to do a bare bones pencil drawing of the object then trace over it in ink (dip pen, fountain pen or fineliner) and add the hatching and other details in ink. The difference in appearance between the graphite and ink is surprising. Once I get a few pencil drawings done to my liking, I'll photocopy them so I can try variations of the detailing.

I'm doing some puttering cleanup of lapidary rough, slabs and cabochons that I have in progress. I want to put the water-lubed tile say back together tomorrow so that I can do trim sawing here on my own dime. I also have figured out how to get a 20 amp outlet in place in our sun room / studio so that we can get going doing kiln work for enameling and working with metal clays.

55 "Oh Suzanna" is possible on any harmonica, really easy, and a lot of fun to play once you get the hang of it. You do need some time blowing and sucking on the thing to become familiar with where the notes are. Shut up you guys.

I learned to play trumpet in school the regular way, but the harmonica I just learned by playing with it. Once you learn to play by ear you can whip out "Happy Birthday" or "Taps" just like that.

Used to go camping/hiking.
Sitting with the wife and a bottle of C.C. in the tent one night, 18 degrees, 25 mph wind, freezing rain; Coleman lantern brought it up to 40 in the tent. I look across the way. There's a big FMC coach, generator quietly humming. Looking through its picture window there's a fellow drinking a beer, wearing hiking shorts, sock feet propped up on the dinette as his wife bringing him a sandwich.
Yes, I decided to change my style of camping right then.

Spent a lot of time trampolining when young. Knew how not to get hurt. Did a standing back flip once - to know i could do it - but only once, being fond of my neck.

Was there something special about the side of that shield that the woman was presenting to the lynx? Or was she simply trying to get it to move away from the trap?

I had to LOL at the corrosion along the rocker panel of that truck. That was pretty much what every truck eventually comes to look like in Michigan's Upper Peninsula from the winter time road saltings.

61 I took time out from researching the existing wiring, fuses, and relays vs. what I need to get 7pin towing working on the Tundra.
The Frontier's headlights were 'well aged', mostly blurred and yellow. 3M kit had a 3" foam attachment for the drill and 500, 800, and 3000 grit sanding disks. The headlights turned out really well. Then I looked at the Hyundai's headlights and the state of the supplies and decided 'sure, plenty of stuff left. I wasn't correct.
The Hyundai's headlights have a harder clear coat which didn't sand off even after using the 500 and 2 800 grit disks on both. Ordered more supplies and will finish the Hyundai and then move to the Tundra.
Then I'll get back to 7pin tow wiring.

I do. I have at least three camping weekends on my calendar between now and Memorial Day. One of them is with gKids for Cub Scouts. The other two, and possibly more, are with my Scout Troop.

I have gotten less fond of the camping as I usually have to get up in the night around the 4:00 AM hour. Getting out of the sleeping bag in the winter cold and under the fierce urgency of having to answer nature's call is an unwelcome negative experience these days.

Oh yes -- it's why I am looking at either two-bedroom houses with an extra study space/finished basement, or a three-bedroom. I wouldn't even mind a two-story place; I'd probably have to put a window unit A/C in an upstairs room for hot weather. But think how much fun the kittens will have galloping up and down the steps!

71 GranddaughterC (12) and I are taking an art class at the Y. Interesting mix of people -- about half are kids 10 and up, the other half middle aged people like me. We are working in a mixed media sketch book, teacher is a school art teacher. Every week she has a video of some kind of mixed media thing for us to watch and then she brings different materials and has us try stuff. It's ok. I just wanted to do something with the girl. It has made me want to get supplies out and actually do something I want to do.

Just started another 5 gallon batch of mead with the last of the honey my wife would let me use (it's gonna be a rack, or melomel) and am building a sideboard for the dining area, since she gave away the pie safe/cupboard.
All walnut. Was gonna use some hard maple I was given for the drawer faces and shelf, but the wood was just too warpy.
I love to mix woods. Will still use maple dowels for the pins. (Trenails)

My parents didn't own but rented, and I've lived in apartments or half-doubles my entire adult life. That adjustment, to think like a property owner, will be as big a change as retirement.

Of course there are those places which, while shown furnished, look like the Jukes family or the Clampetts have been living there, not neat at all. The house itself may be fine, but seeing cheap furniture is annoying.

No fixer-uppers for me. Okay, I may have to repaint some walls or have some floors refinished. But the roof has to be good, the A/C and heat have to work, etc. It has to be in move-in condition or very close.

I'm looking at small houses in the Midwest (Indiana seems to be the front runner, with Kansas right behind). It'll only be me and maybe Miss Linda with our cats, no kids or extended family. A two- or three-bedroom is fine.

Our house is a "story" house. Insulated concrete form house. Wood in the hood. Entire upstairs is a playroom. Antique Brunswick and antique piano will stay, as well as a ping pong table. Hell, I may spring for a coupla pinball machines, just to give it more atmosphere.
We won't even market it til we move, cause I have to put about $100,000 into it to re-plat it to keep the other 20 or so acres. (5 will go with the house).

Now that is stupid. How long were sparkplugs supposed to last in the 70s? IIRC it wasn't very long... just like the 3000 mile dino oil changes, you don't design the engine/transmission so that the owner has to have an 8 ft lift to do the oil.

I looked at a place (online) in North Dakota that had lake view, an RV space and a vintage 70s double wide. Decided it was not the place for me but it did have a view.

The fun thing is to put a fairly low maximum on. I used $60,000 for awhile. Then just move the mouse around on the Zillow map and see what comes up. Searching for log cabins is fun too.

160 158 Thanks for asking, Ben Had. I stumbled on the best garage I have ever dealt with, prompt, great service, no BS.Had a couple bum coils so I had them all replaced, plugs, wires, general tuneup. They picked it up Thursday morning and I retrieved it yesterday afternoon. Pleasure to drive once again. BTW, I have been an auto club member like forever, and it payed off. Free tow and a $70 discount on parts and labor.

It's getting there. We have 3 pairs of planks glued up and rough fitted together but we need to glue the 3 sections now. After that we'll trim it down to 42"x90" and finish it up. The rough fitted top is sitting on the bas and I used it to work on the last 2 days. The sanding and finish will take a few weeks. Then we have to get chairs for it...

We have a floral needlepoint that I consider an heirloom, tho it's not that old. It was started by my maternal grandmother and when she passed in 1991 my Mom gave it to my paternal grandmother who finished it , had it framed and gave it to us I think one Christmas.

I'd like to pass it on to one of my nieces or nephews who would appreciate the provenance. I should start planning on where other family pieces should go.

Always been interested in family history, well and history in general. Heck I'm trying to retire from a job as museum curator that I've had since 1989. And I've been doing genealogy since I was 15, which was a while ago.

Back then, before that bit of a fraud "Roots", it was just me and old blue haired ladies in the local history/genealogy room at the library. In fact at first I was denied entry as I was too young to be able to treat the old books with enough care. Asshole agists, LOL.

I should sue, heck this nutty advice columnist can get 83 million, why not? Ooops I ventured into forbidden territory, maybe. Nah, extorting rich guys is her hobby

164 I sometimes feel reading here that every other poster bought his or her first house at twenty-nine and is vastly experienced in these things. My parents didn't own but rented, and I've lived in apartments or half-doubles my entire adult life. That adjustment, to think like a property owner, will be as big a change as retirement.

WA, you just come from a different culture/upbringing. We didn't buy our first house till I was 33, tho we came from a home-owning background. The Carter yrs of 14% mortgages were an impediment earlier.

165 Sometimes the problem is finding someone to take the pieces. I have a couple dresser scarves (remember those!) that were done by my maternal grandmother in the 1930's or 40's. They have sentimental value--the pattern was stamped on and embroidered over--but not really too decorative.
