CAR BRUTALLY DESTROYED BY SNOWPLOW: VIDEO A university student spent four days with a bullet lodged in his brain, mistakenly thinking he'd been hit by a stone. Mateus Facio, 21, carried on as normal before discovering the truth, even going swimming and partying with mates. It was only when problems arose with his right arm that he sought medical help. I am not one of those. 18 photos show the reality of van life — and it's a lot less glamorous than what you see on Instagram and TikTok Call me a softy if you wish. I love a story with a happy ending. Thug Tries to Rob Concealed Carry Permit Holder during Facebook Marketplace Meetup, Pays with His Life A father-of-two went to great lengths to fund his heroin addiction – by abseiling down a quarry wall to steal rare peregrine falcon eggs. Christopher Wheeldon was caught on a hidden wildlife camera, set up to monitor the nest, rappelling down a cliff face while hooked up to a harness. An adult bird guarding the nest can be heard desperately calling out in distress but the 34-year-old tree surgeon was not deterred by its efforts to fend him off. He is seen reaching into the nest and removing the valuable eggs, which can even fetch thousands of pounds on the middle eastern avian market. About the bad guy being shot...
FTA: They met with a group of people in an alley around 5 pm, WMBD reported. That really should have been a tipoff, you know? You do this stuff in a Walgreen's parking lot, at the pet store, by a restaurant. "Yeah, meet us behind the laundry and the deli in the alley" is a big no-no. And the group? Big tell. He only shot and killed one guy. No word in the story on the other miscreants. This is not as feel-good of a story as made out, given the errors involved. But it's a little feel-good for the bad guy DRT. Posted by: GWB at January 20, 2024 10:09 PM (32nmx) 34

We're talking starting at 7 digits, IIRC. The bird was just about snow white, and it would have been a huge status symbol for the sheik. At the time, USAFA was one of the only organizations in the world allowed to take gyrfalcons out of the wild. I don't think that's true anymore. Posted by: GWB at January 20, 2024 10:26 PM (32nmx) 77

do men have someone like that? Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Abandon All Hope Ye Who Enter Here at January 20, 2024 10:26 PM (FVME7) I'm sorry, are we expected to believe that women live in bubbles of emotional and social isolation and are unsure how the others of their kind Feel About Things? Are we expected to believe that women don't, in fact, communicate about this with each other EXTENSIVELY? That the entire subtext of female communication is not 'how I feel about X', and the desire to know that one's feelings are heard and considered? Is this not at the root of a lot of communication failures between the sexes, as we knuckledragging males don't get it in the same way other women do? I'm not saying I think her post is untrue, regarding her homegirl Tay-Tay's music. I'm saying the message it sends is fake and is very much along the lines of much of women's media-- it does not exist to answer a question or impart information. It exists to be agreed with, so the poster and all the respondents feel a sense of group belonging and validation. That and five bucks says she DGAF what men think or have or want or do. I met an actual "spokesman" one time. When I was apprenticing in a motor cycle shop, the boss gave my buddy and me the rest of the day off because he wanted us to deliver a couple of wheels and wanted us to meet this guy.
A side angle of the job once called "tyre fitter" was spoke-and-wheel truing. Back when wire wheels were the only game in town, there were many patterns of spoke wires. The rims had nipples, and had to be configured for the spoke pattern that matched the amount of power you intended to put through them. Putting the whole structure together was a skilled job, because the wheel was just a box of parts until somebody put the spokes under the correct tension. They were infinitely adjustable, and there were a lot of them to do. Craftsman in question was a retired racer, who'd once run Nortons at Daytona when it was on the sand. He dinged the spokes like a tuning fork, then spun them on a dial gauge. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at January 20, 2024 11:55 PM (zdLoL) 243

Watching an interview now where some lefty brings in another lefty to talk about conservatives and conservativism and its funny.
The historian lefty denotes modern conservativism starts in France in response to the revolution. This isn't a new idea but...uh...there's that think that happened in the US a few years before that one would supposed an American citizen would heard of... Anyway our talking head goes on to note that these rightists opposed to the French revolution opposed it because...they were opposed to freedom and rights. Yes, that same French revolution that led to mass war across Europe and replaced a king with an emperor after enough blood was spilled first. In thinking of Fetterman I'm reminded of an interview I saw recently with a late middle aged Philadelphia hooker...and stay with me here I'm not making this connection *just* to slur the Frankensenator.
So the hooker noted that Philly had been a rough place her whole life. That her friends and associates had to problem breaking the law and making a quick easy buck BUT that things had gotten far far worse. Yes you could get mugged back in the day and there were made men that might drop by to make sure you were paying the mob but the level of mindless violent crime has just exploded in recent years and shows every sign of continuing to get worse. And...perhaps this is the story of Fetterman as well. He grew up as a thug...but even those prone to this level of degeneracy can see it has gotten worse and unless something changes will continue to. Its probably too much to expect the man to actually resist his party...but I suppose we can hope. If you search around you location, you can probably find one pretty close to you. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 21, 2024 02:34 AM (w6EFb) 376

His unit has a solar irradiance sensor, and you can see the graph for that over the day. On a clear day, you see that makes a nice nice top half of sine curve (it's not exactly, but close). You can see local high noon from the time of the peak. When it's clear. When it's cloudy, things get choppy up and downy. This behavior should give solar power people a clue x 4.... I was looking at some weather display the other day. The base "comfort" on RH and the silly thing called mid teens and 50% (outdoor) humidity as "comfortable". Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 21, 2024 02:51 AM (w6EFb) 382

Posted by: publius ----- I rely on my own, proven, temperature measurements. I do often survey nearby instruments for correlation on other aspects. Fwiw, here are some data from Mt. Of possible interest, site for Mt. Mitchell has a graph (about half way down the page) of temp vs. dew point through the day:

Bummer. The unit just a hop and a skip down the road says 2 deg. F. We were supposed to bottom out at 6.

Some of those personal stations can be very unreliable, either out of calibration or installed in a bad location to close to "contamination". There's one around here that gets crazy high temp readings in summer and crazy low in winter. He might have it mounted to close to a heat pump. His humidty/dew points are quite jumpy as well. Something, dryer vent, other "steam" source or something too close. Or his unit is just screwed up. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 21, 2024 03:10 AM (w6EFb) 387

Here's GSP's daily "HYD" report, which includes data from their official (ie supposed to be good) stations over their area, which includes a lot of NC. http://tinyurl.com/5hev3tcj The readings are taken at 7AM (standard time always, it will be 8AM during DST) rather than the usual midnight-midnight range. This is so their observers don't have to get out at midnight. But that can trip you up with the lows, especially in winter where sunrise is after 7AM. The low for the 24hr period might have happened the previous morning, and not the current late night to early morning period. From Insty:
IT IS INDEED A MYSTERY, IF YOUR HEAD IS SO FAR UP YOUR BEHIND YOU CAN’T SEE DAYLIGHT: An NYT writer says it is ‘Morning in America’ under Biden. I wonder why Americans don’t seem to agree. Too bad we lost he and Lowell George so early.
I couldn't remember how Robert Palmer died. Heart Attack. He was a chain smoker apparently. Sadly, it caught up with him. He was 54. Lowell George didn't make it out of the 70s. All his excesses caught up with him. Died in 79. He was 34. Posted by: Puddleglum at work at January 21, 2024 03:56 AM (Kdi1r) 392
