Media Companies Posting Their L's: Google, Amazon, Instagram, Disney All Laying Off Employees

Held over from Thursday, so you know it's all the hottest breaking newzzz!

But I added a lot more than you saw on Thursday.

The Biden economy's so hot even the tech giants are shedding staff.

Google has laid off hundreds of employees working on its hardware, voice assistance and engineering teams as part of cost-cutting measures.

The cuts come as Google looks towards "responsibly investing in our company's biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead," the company said in a statement.

...

Google is increasingly focusing on investments in artificial intelligence, as is rival Microsoft, with the latter introducing a Copilot feature that incorporates artificial intelligence into products like search engine Bing, browser Edge as well as Windows for its corporate customers.

...

The cuts follow pledges by executives of Google and its parent company Alphabet to reduce costs. A year ago, Google said it would lay off 12,000 employees or around 6% of its workforce.

...

Google is not the only technology company cutting back. In the past year, Meta -- the parent company of Facebook -- has slashed more than 20,000 jobs to reassure investors. Meta's stock price gained about 178% in 2023.

Instagram is also cutting 60 jobs.

Instagram has cut 60 technical program manager positions, eliminating a layer of management at the company, according to a new report from The Information. The impacted employees have two months to apply for other jobs at the company. After the two month period, their employment will be terminated if they are unable to secure a different role at the company.

Amazon, which bought Twitch for some reason, is now cutting staff at the Porn For Kidz site.

Amazon is laying off about 500 employees in its Twitch livestreaming unit, an executive overseeing the unit wrote in a memo to staffers.

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said the cuts were being made in an effort to "rightsize our company."

Amazon also cut staffers in its Prime Video and Amazon Studios units on Wednesday.

is laying off about 500 employees in its Twitch livestreaming unit, an executive overseeing the business wrote in a memo to staffers Wednesday.

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said the cuts were being made in an effort to "rightsize our company" and align its headcount with the current size of the business.

Amazon acquired Twitch for almost $1 billion in 2014. The site is most known as a popular livestreaming platform for video gamers.

No, it's not. It's best known for Twitch Thots who show their tits and camel-toes and do porny ASMRs for children, begging kids to send them cash.

Twitch thots are always "accidentally" showing their nipples. After a Twitch Thot stopped pretending to accidentally show her nipples and just showed her nipples while daring Twitch to ban her for it, Twitch changed its terms of service to allow women to show their nipples to children. They called this "Artistic Nudity."

They then walked that back and now Twitch Thots will be forced to the old system of "accidentally" showing their nipples again.

Amazon is also cutting staff at their Amazon Video studios.

By the way, Amazon will start blasting commercials into your face on Amazon Prime starting January 29, unless you fork over another $3 per month.

NBC "News" is also laying off its, giggle, "journalists."

NBC News was undergoing a series of layoffs across the division on Thursday, impacting what was described as a double digit number of employees in its workforce.

A source familiar with the plans said that the number of those laid off would be in the 50 to 100 range out of several thousand employees...

The job cutbacks are the latest to hit a media outlet, with other organizations taking more severe action to trim their staffs. CNN cut hundreds of employees in 2022, while NPR last year trimmed about 10% of its workforce. The Washington Post recently offered buyouts that saw the departure of many well known journalists as it sought to cut its staff by 240.

Disney is also laying off workers at one of its four failing movie companies, Pixar.

Disney-owned animation studio Pixar is poised to undergo layoffs this year, TechCrunch has learned and the company confirmed. While sources at the company said the layoffs would be significant and as high as 20% -- or reductions that would see Pixar's team of 1,300 dropped to less than 1,000 over the coming months -- Pixar says those numbers are too high.

Oh, Pixar says? Well no one at Disney ever lies, so.

Imagine having not one but four separate movie divisions and seeing them all fail massively at the same time.

And then, for some reason, you get to keep your job, claiming "Covid did it." No really, they're still saying that The Bob Iger Grooming Company is seeing every division and every movie bomb due to covid.

How bad is The Bob Iger Grooming Company doing? This bad: For the first time in history, Disney and the Disney-bought-and-ruined company Pixar have been shut out of nominations at the biggest animation award show.

For the first time in 32 years, Disney and Pixar films were completely shut out of the Best Animated Feature category at one of Hollywood's major animated awards bodies.

Though Disney released both Elemental and Wish to theaters in 2023, neither film landed among the nominees in the Annie Awards' top bracket, marking the first time that's happened since the category was introduced in 1992.

The Annie Awards honor the best in animated excellence each year, and are often a predictor of the Best Animated Feature Oscar contenders each year -- with Disney and/or Pixar scoring big nominations (or victories) for Best Animated Feature at the Annies every calendar year for over three decades.

Die, media. Die screaming.

Update: Disney is re-releasing movies they claim didn't get enough exposure due to having been released during covid.

The first one of these films to be released is Soul. But Disney's hopes for Vengeance Box office are dashed. The film made $99 per showing.

Less than a hundred buck per showing. That's like 8 tickets.

Thanks to andycanuck.

Update: Film Threat raved about The Beekeeper.

A note on bias: Chris Gore is biased in favor of a healthy Hollywood industry. This causes him to really go crazy for mid-budget films, which Hollywood has all but abandoned in the age of Marvel.

It doesn't mean he's a bad critic -- just that he gets especially positive for a certain kind of mid-budget movie that Hollywood used to make a lot of.

Is he overdoing it here? I dunno, but I intend to find out. I'll be seeing it this week. I was going to see it yesterday but then I got tired and lazy. Went to bed by 9:45 pm.

Gore also went bananas for the "Big Straight Energy" of the romcom Anyone But You.

As with actioners, Hollywood all but abandoned romcom in favor of nothing but CGI-filled blockbusters. Those, and Diverse Oscar Bait Snoozers.

Allen Ng is less invested in the health of Hollywood and said both are good. Not a rave, but he said they were worth seeing.

5 The Disney Grooming Syndicate’s latest box office humiliation is so humiliating; after shaking my head in disbelief like a cartoon character, I had to double-check it.

But glory be, it’s true. It’s true!

Yes, Pixar’s Soul is a 2020 title produced for wide theatrical release and thwarted by all the stupid, anti-science social distancing during the pandemic. Yes, it was released on Disney+, the Disney Grooming Syndicate’s money-losing streaming service… I am a fair man who readily acknowledges all those caveats.

Still, y’all…

Soul, a feature-length animated film starring a black character, was released into 1,350 theaters over the Martin Luther King Jr. four-day holiday weekend and grossed exactly — get ready to laugh — $557,000.

That’s about 25 percent of the projected two million, which makes my heart sing.

On Friday, Soul grossed a measly $99 per theater.

14 This is related to Buck's Morning Rant today. Companies are no longer in the business of growing--or even maintaining--their customer base.

They are solely in the business of looting themselves, cannibalizing whatever is left, and moving on to another business to destroy.

The people who run these companies have no ideas on how to make them "profitable" anymore.

18 Are business executives still talking about "rightsizing"? I thought we mocked that out of existence back in the 90s. Back in the day I pissed off some honchos because another employee commented on the awkward way a tree was growing in a niche in the office building. I said "No problem. They'll just rightsize it." I got a take on this. I think I have the right one.

If you're in the right spot ? This economy is great. My line of work is in demand more than ever. Mostly because - get this - capitalism never was a thing in my lifetime. My line of work was price controlled, via collusion, for my first twenty years. There was never the notion of simply putting my skills on the open market. Because the market was never truly open.

But if you're on the outside, either because your skills are not in demand ... or your hook-up, via politics or affiliation which are one and the same in the end, has vanished ? Then this economy is just not good and is getting ready to be a stone cold bitch.

Many of the folks in print and media pushing this market are still riding on being in the right place at the right time.

it is not a bbc life of Napoleon, it is a feature film, so it does not have to be historically accurate on every detail, just enough. Not true about the battles, 4 major , defining battles for Europe , and for Napoleon perfectly brougth to screen - Tuolon (rise to fame) , Austerliz (became legend), Borodino (failure), Waterloo (the end). One thing I did not particularly like was the script, and the actress who played Josephoine, but that might be the script. Josephine did play a great role in his life, but nothing this woman says and does on screen makes you believe it. Perhaps it is in the directors cut and all will come together there. Seems a bit disjointed, in places, as if parts missing.

Rommel or Julius get 99% male attention. Boney gets more like 70-80%.)

That was one of the reasons we thought of (Nelson helps there, too.) Another was how sharp the uniforms were. And of course, it is Jane Austen's era.

155 On a more serious note.

Does anyone produce real unemployment numbers or GDP where they subtract out the parasite class?

Paying people to hand out money to illegals should not be considered employment, or "productive."

Our nation's wealth depends on production, not transfer, and we seem to produce less and less each day, but our GDP grows and unemployment stays low.

There are inflation numbers that un-jigger the gov. numbers of "inflation minus bad things" and I wondered if anyone does same for GDP and unemployment.

The problem is, it looks like an excuse for Amazon to censor material. I popped for what I thought was all of Season 5 of What We Do in the Shadows and I'd swear I watched through Episode 3. Then the wife and I go back a week later to view Episode 4 and both it and Ep. 3 were not available and I was told I'd get an e-mail when they were (the season pass thing). Funny thing is, both episodes dealt with the gay pride theme. $50 says they got complaints and they're trying to make changes or lean on FX to do it.

Normally, I'd say I'm getting paranoid in my old age but these days, who can tell?

The basic problem with Oppenheimer is it isn't one movie; it's four (at least). There's the Manhattan Project; there's the Communism angle; there's the Oppenheimer-Strauss battle; and there's Oppenheimer's love life.

It would be hard enough to get four such different plots to mesh, especially given that no one cares about the latter two, but throw in Nolan's habit of cutting back and forth in the timeline, and you're left with a mess.

257 The basic problem with Oppenheimer is it isn't one movie; it's four (at least).

Posted by: Dr. T at January 15, 2024 05:42 PM (g0Y4p)

Well, that is where a great script, and direction matters don't you think ? for example the same can be said about War and Peace. There is the oblivious Russian aristocracy living the life before being invaded, there is the bloody War of 1812, there is the peasants angle, there is the Natasha love story. And that is why the 3.5 hour (?) American movie is genius. Because it brings it all together like an excellent piece of music.

Not sure what you are saying. I agree that he was an ass, and that he could not run those divisions. I also agree that his system got out of hand and led to the destruction of the company.

But that came later. The early process was to keep the company competitive. I have worked in so many places where, like Twitter when Elon took control, you could fire 90% of many departments and output would only increase. There has to be a middle ground between firing nobody and a goatee Startrek.

The other problems were it didn't take to mud well; and I think the British-made .303 was a fraction off so jams could happen. Even after their replacement by SMLEs, units kept a few as sniper rifles.

Herbert McBride, in his book "A Rifleman Went To War", addressed the Ross Rifle and he was very pleased with it. The Ross was certainly one of the most accurate rifles in the field during WW I.
