New York's Dingbat Mummy Governor Hochul Declares a Fake "War" On the Shoplifting She Made Legal; California Searches for Ways to be Anti-Theft Yet Pro-Thief

The blue states are enjoying the fruits of their ideology, and they're not enjoying it much.

New York unleashed criminals upon the citizenry through "decarceration" reforms.

Now citizens are having their stores picked clean by the organized looters that make up the Democrat Party -- the Democrat Party is nothing but organized looting, after all -- and Hochul feels the need to pretend to do something about that with the 2024 elections on the horizon.

Gov. Kathy Hochul declared war against shoplifting on Tuesday, saying retail thievery in New York has spiraled out of control -- with many products in stores under lock and key.
Hochul unveiled a multi-pronged plan to tackle the shoplifting scourge, including boosting penalties for offenders who assault retail workers.
"I say, 'No More!' The chaos must stop!," she said during her 2024 State of the State address delivered in Albany.

Well you used to throw thieves in jail. That system worked pretty well. You could consider going back to it.

The governor's plan would create a new category of crime to prosecute those who sell stolen goods online and set up a new "smash and grab unit" in the New York State Police Department to prosecute theft rings.

Oh, nevermind, silly me thinking you actually wanted to address the problem. How foolish of me. You just want to appear to be doing something about it. A new block in the organizational flow chart. Whew. Yes, that will trick some of the voters, without the racist step of actually locking up criminals aka the Democrat Party base.

Hochul also vowed to provide dedicated funding to district attorneys to prosecute property crime, primarily retail theft.

Oh more funding for government! So much innovative thinking! Wow, this really isn't Your Granddad's Democrat Party!

She noted that grand larceny crimes were up double digits compared to figures before the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

Don't forget "after the George Floyd riots and progressive demands to Decriminalize Crime."

"Across our nation and state retail theft has surged, creating fear among the customers and workers. Thieves brazenly tear items off the shelves and menace employees," Hochul said.
"Owners go broke replacing broken windows and stolen goods, driving many out of business. These attacks are .... a breakdown of the social order."

Conspicuously absent from her plan, however, was any talk of specifically imposing tougher penalties for serial shoplifters.

LOL, of course not. Hardened career criminals are the Democrat Party base.

California is similarly looking for ways to reduce crime without taking the painful step of actually throwing Democrat criminals in prison.

Newsom is laying out his priorities at a politically fraught moment for Democrats navigating rising concerns about public safety, exacerbated by highly visible incidents of people making off with merchandise. Elected officials who have backed lighter sentencing in an effort to reduce mass incarceration are looking for ways to address crime without abandoning a yearslong movement away from lengthy prison terms.
Those dynamics have amplified calls to roll back Prop 47, a 2014 ballot measure that reduced drug and property crimes to misdemeanors and drew support from a cross-section of California Democrats, including Newsom. But the Democratic governor is resisting calls to revisit the initiative, instead embracing a mix of new penalties and bills that solidify existing law.
Newsom is asking lawmakers to create new categories of crimes targeting "professional" offenders who have stolen property or burglarized vehicles with the intent to resell them and to enhance penalties for people who resell large amounts of stolen goods. He also wants to clarify existing powers to arrest retail thieves and aggregate separate offenses, making permanent a law allowing charges for organized retail crime.

In other words, he wants to continue doing nothing about the actual thieves, and hopes that if he just imprisons a few of the guys buying the stolen merchadise from the thieves, somehow that will fix everything.

Um, no. No matter who the actual thieves sell to, whether it's an organized gang or to people on the street, they're still making money off this risk-free crime.

And Newsom and the Democrats will continue protecting them and guaranteeing them lifetime employment as state-sanctioned bandits and raiders.

Hey Newsom -- what will your "reforms" do to stop daily thieves who pick stores clean and then sell the stolen merchandise on the sidewalk in front of their victims' store?

LOL. Shoplifters already know not to assault workers. Shoplifters go into stores with garbage bags and take everything valuable off the shelves. The workers stand and film and don't try to intervene because their company fires them if they try to intervene. The shoplifters calmly walk around anyone who stands in the way. There are many videos online of all of this.

The only way this would actually work is if Hochul told local DAs they would be removed for dereliction of duty if they don't start charging shoplifters according to law.

Because Hochul isn't doing that, this will do nothing.

She hired people to go to brick and mortar beauty supply shops and rip them off and she would buy the goods at a significant discount then sell them online at higher price but still less than they could be purchased in stores.

I've commented before that I can foresee a comeback of the "catalogue store" model in the big cities.

Walk in and see a display of goods, possibly with samples you can touch (clothes, etc.). When you're ready to place your order, you go to a kiosk and ring up what you want (likely with a localized, store-only version of the website - something they already have for store employees). Wait 10-15 minutes and an employee brings it out to you.

Essentially, the same thing as shopping online from home, except with quicker turnaround and with a show floor/demo area to see and touch what you're buying.

It will probably really piss off any surviving executives from Service Merchandise. It turns out that they weren't behind the times, they were ahead of them.

By putting everything behind glass (inefficient, high-overhead) or back in the stockroom behind a locked door and an employee brings it out to you after securing payment (less inefficient, lower-overhead), removing merchandise from uncontrolled public areas.

As far as whether to carry expensive or not, it is best to have two of the same pistol with the same controls as a backup in case one is taken by police for evidence reasons.

Don't assume that you will be able to buy a replacement carry piece either while an investigation is pending which can be awhile.

For the most part, with the polymer revolution, you can find most self defense pistols easily achieving the 3-4 MOA which is rather overkill when most conflicts involving handguns occur well within 21 feet or so (7 yds). Tom Givens, of Rangemaster fame, spent two decades roughly teaching Memphis area residents how to protect themselves. He kept up with his graduates with after effect debriefings. He found most of them occurred at car length distance or less. FBI found the same for their agents.

BTW, range ammo is not recommended by most trainers (there is a weird exception with the XM193 55 gr in 5.56 as it relies on bullet upset at close range and tends to overpenetrate less).

No police force carries fmj anymore simply because the risk of harming innocents is increase and through and through shots generally fail to stop a determined thug. To get a stop for a drugged up thug determined to get you, you need to either shutdown the nervous system (brain or spinal column) or cause enough blood loss by making really big holes in vital organs so that they bleed out. Unfortunately, handguns across the board are poor stoppers so you need the best self defense ammo you can get.

As an aside, many self defense scenarios are in poor lighting and range ammo does not have flash suppressants. That can literally blind you from your own muzzle flash in some cases to your detriment.

I still think the general advice that you carry a low quality gun for fear of losing it if you use it is poor advice. If your family's life depends on it, it's worth carrying the best one for the job. No, that doesn't mean the most expensive collector's piece you own, or even something like a race gun. But definitely choose a nice one.

In the treatment of First Amendment issues, fedgov and states are forbidden to do indirectly what they cannot do directly.

For example, use taxes to eliminate freedom of the press by passing special taxes on newspapers so they become unaffordable.

Since ammo is necessary for firearms and for training to use them safely, it is essentially like paper and ink to a newspaper publisher. You can have generally applicable taxes like a sales tax but any attempt to actually tax a constitutional right into non existence is a no go.

The left is simply throwing shit at the wall and seeing if it sticks now. Last time Democrats threw a fit like this was during school desegregation era.

It is not that so much but you need to be able to immediately have a replacement of the same type available to maintain familiarity rather than learning a new one. If the police are investigating your shooting, you may not be able to purchase a new one in some areas.

Target level accuracy in handguns generally also means that they are very picky in ammo as tolerance shrink that makes them accurate also make them less tolerant of ammo differences.

For the most part, any firearm that is widely used by police is a decent bet for being easy to train with, adequate accuracy, and availability of spare parts. The newer polymer sorts are also much easier for self repair if necessary.

My handguns are tools more than anything and for self defense. Rifles are for fun mostly.

There was a huge thing in the army vs the rifle people and the machine pistoleers. You have these rifles and train to hit someone a mile off or whatever when most encounters in war are at pretty short range and they key is to get the first shot off and hit or make the other guy go to the ground. The rifle lobby keeps sneaking back however, you need to watch em.

The real advance will be decentralization - to let the store make your clothes to fit by having the cloth computer machine cut and sewn on order based on your measurements. They make "3D printers" that can make odd parts at a reasonable cost now for small orders, they just need to make smaller and smaller automatic clothes makers.

I would price every single thing in the store at $10,000. However, upon reaching the cashier the register operator would give a one time only membership to the store which would knock the cost down to the proper figure. That way, if you are shoplifting, you are exceeding the arrest threshold by taking a single item, while your regular customers enjoy decent prices (since your theft cost would dry up and you could pass that savings onto your customers)....while shoplifters get nailed with a felony for stealing something selling over $10k
