A Troop of Penguins

Neat safety on a circular table saw-- the blade has an electrical charge which detects if a finger has touched it, and ducks back beneath the table when it senses it's about to cut a digit off. This is the only kind of circular saw I would consider working with. I'm way too inattentive and daydreamy to work with a regular circular saw. I'd be missing five fingers within a week.

New Hyundais will make parallel parking as easy as parallel parking for anyone who isn't an idiot. (To be honest I just blast in and get lucky about 50% of the time. The other half of the time I have to back out again and try blasting in again.)

Neat sculpture of Franz Kafka. It really makes you think. (I assume.)

7 So a few of the rumors for the upcoming 4Runner are being confirmed, an end to the 4L NA V6, your engine choices are now Turbo 4 Cylinder or Turbo 4 Cylinder hybrid, an end to the iconic roll down tailgate window, you will now be able to get a manual transmission with select models and a complete technology overhaul adding lots of wizbang.

>>I can't imagine how it's going to work on a 4Runner.

I was hoping they would at least throw the Twin Turbo V6 from the Tundra into this iteration before the went to the hybrid platform.

4Runner's are supposed to bullet proof, million mile engines and the inherent problem with any battery based power train is that at some point, usually around 100k miles or just right after your warranty runs out, you have to replace the very expensive battery pack.

Plus hybrid power trains bring increased complexity and areas where things will break.

The bulletproof 4Runner is not going to be so bulletproof any longer.

Nope.

They're incredibly fast. The blade is yanked back under the table and braked by being slammed into a metal catching honeycomb.

They test them just by swinging a hot dog into it. Usually doesn't even break the skin.

122 Those SawStop safety table saws have been out for years now . They use a replaceable component that literally seizes the blade before it cuts parts of your body off. Think it uses electromagnetic braking but it is a sacrificial component that runs 70-100 bucks the last time I checked.

Woodcraft store chain is a dealer if you want one as are some of your better woodworking supply stores (not big boxes).

I've used all sorts of saws over the years and still have all my fingers. Just never rush, go slow, and use all the safety equipment like goggles, gloves, etc. and quit before you get tired or distracted.

You also use the right tool for the right job and don't honky hitch trying to do something that table saws are not good at doing. Also use the accessories necessary if you are trying to do a task that a bog standard table saw accessories don't do well. A really skilled person like AOP can use mundane tools to do extraordinary things but most of DIY types aren't that experienced and never learned basics in formal shop classes.

That is in part why radial saws disappeared from the market except for specialized tasks.

Documentary on tigers in India, there's one that had been identified as a "maneater." Supposedly killed four people over the years, although the latest one, the evidence was flimsy that it was THIS tiger that killed him.

They did eventually relocate the tiger, but to a small, tight zoo type setting, where he was struggling to survive.

you should see what our local Amish use for cutting up firewood ... think a bare 18 - 24" blade on an arbor, belt-driven by a gas engine, maybe some kind of minimalist table-ish support ...

I myself worked in a model shop in the mid-70s where I was the only person who had all 10 fingers in their original state ...

still true! I bless the memory of a guy running an old LeBlond turret lathe who told me & showed me about wearing loose "safety cuff" gloves when working around rotating machinery ... you should be able to whip your hand and have the glove come away free; if something tries to grab your hand, it gets the glove, not you.

a few years later (while doing a lot of welding) I learned to keep a bit of oil on those gloves; the smoke from the oil warns you to flip the glove off (& drop whatever you picked up / touched) before the heat gets all the way through and gives you a burn.

There was a story a few years back, from Africa I think, about a guy who would go to the wall of a lion enclosure, perch on the top of it, and shit down into the the lions' turf.

Apparently, they objected to this activity. One of them was able to jump high enough to get their claws into him and that was the last shit that guy ever took.

180 148 Despite the info in the Tweet, that is NOT a "circular saw." It is a "table saw." And, if you keep the guard over the blade, exactly what happened in that video doesn't happen. That's why the guard is there.

This looks like another super-hi-tech solution for something that a $1.25 part will solve.

It is pretty awesome to see an example (SawStop reps come around to demonstrate every now and then at places like Woodcraft stores). But, I don't have one and have used table saws for years mainly for ripping. I have a radial and chop saws for cross cutting.

My closest call was ripping a thin piece off a bigger board and the pawl sets did not work properly to prevent the saw from throwing the workpiece back. Bought some new pawl surfaces right after.

I was uninjured because I am never directly behind the board when I rip them. Instead, I am standing at an angle instead of directly behind when using the fence for ripping.

True, especially the big commercial ones. If I have time, I actually prefer to use hand planes as you can sneak up on an exact fit for a joint better than using a power tool.

Table saws are most dangerous when you try to use them for something that they are not designed to do if you don't make or have a specific jig.

From what I remember back in the airbag debate, despite being a pioneer in air bag tech including selling a few as options, GM was somewhat reluctant to promote them instead of safety belts. That was because they knew that a certain percentage of people would be killed by airbags but not with safety belts. GM could not be sued for people not wearing safety belts but could be sued over injuries or deaths with airbags.

The Saw Stop is expensive but it is housed in a great table saw by itself. A well appointed professional Saw Stop setup will cost you 3K$. A well appointed professional table saw without the technology ranges from 1.5-2K$.

Therefore the safety feature probably adds 1-1.5K$. Now think about how much an accident would cost a woodshop owner for a hospital alone yet alone worker comp.

Dunno if you are trolling but generally circular saw refer to the portable ones used mostly for rough carpentry. Table saws produce more accurate cuts adequate for finishwork in a house or furniture projects. There are some portable work site table saws that are primarily there to do repeated cuts and sometimes certain tasks require more accurate cuts.

An expert can wield a table saw and get about the same cut accuracy as a portable table saw but most of us are not that good.

The leader of Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels threatened on Thursday the United States and Britain with even larger attacks in the Red Sea after their navies intercepted a major one.

US and British forces shot down 18 drones and three missiles launched by the Huthis late Tuesday in what London described as their biggest attack so far in solidarity with Palestinians in Hamas-ruled Gaza.

“Any American aggression will never go without a response,” rebel leader Abdulmalik al-Huthi said in speech broadcast live by the Huthis’ Al-Masirah television.

“The response to any American attack will not only be at the level of the operation that was recently carried out… but it will be greater than that.”

"A recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that new frontal air bags designed to meet the latest federal standards have not improved occupant protection and may have actually reduced protection for belted drivers compared with earlier-generation air bags."

but this part is my favorite:

"The results may also draw into question, if manufacturers' designs are adequately meeting the requirements of the test, whether it's possible that the need to protect unbelted occupants compromises the air bags' performance for belted drivers or that it's possible that some cars were designed to meet the test rather than to create a positive benefit for all occupants. 333 There's a new ICBM in development; I forget the name and schedule. B52s are still flying; now there's a long-lived strat platform.

336 323 Better than the LGM-30. "This one goes to 35."

339 It's 2022 and you are in Chicago and in the same house as 10-year-old Isabella Rodriguez who has just come home with the new iMac laptop given her by the Chicago Public Schools, to enable her "remote learning," made necessary because the teachers want to work from home.

How do you get the laptop into your possession so it can be sold on the black market and be truly operable by the new owner? Bella's been using it since an hour after it came in the door.

341 On the subject of table saws... never put your hand behind the blade. EVER.

But sure he has a $3000 sawstop to cover hizz ass.

More money than brains.

Says a guy with a 1990 craftsman with no driving life and still ten fingers.

Dumbass needed a better jig.

Dumbass.

345 I believe that the Missouri ship commemorates the Japanese surrender. They almost signed it on my dad's ship but then decided on the MIssouri bc it was Truman's home state.
