The art dealer testified that Hunter, 53, knew who bought about 70% of his art -- including Elizabeth Hirsh Naftali, who obtained works by the first son both before and after scoring a prestigious presidential appointment.

The high-stakes testimony came as the Oversight Committee spearheads an impeachment inquiry into whether the elder Biden was corruptly involved with his son and brother James's foreign ventures while vice president. Hirsh Naftali, who scored repeated visits to the White House during the timeframe in question, inked a $42,000 sale in February 2021, before her appointment that July by Joe Biden to the Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad, and then another for $52,000 in December 2022. I will say that it does feel like the GOP is changing because the GOPe is actively limiting its own power in the caucus through retirements (essentially, once they hit the term limits on committee chairs, they bail) which has strengthened the right wing of the caucus at a level not seen since...Gingrich's rise to power?
All this is happening while GOPe megadonors are throwing tens and hundreds of millions of dollars to put one of their puppets in the presidential nomination and getting nowhere.
The GOP is in a long, achingly slow process of change. I'm not out of hope that, in time, the GOP can become an actual opposition party. It's not there now. It probably won't be after the next election. But...someday.

Yes, and they never will. Depending on my level of cynicism, I think there are two potential reasons for this:
1. That's not who we are, etc. They simply don't want to.
2. They're genuinely afraid of what would happen, primarily that they'd the defund an agency and then ... nothing would happen. The agencies would go on anyway, and the executive agencies would force the issue about how the government *actually* works. What happens if you defund (or even dissolve) an agency, but the agency doesn't go along with it? Nobody wants to be demonstrated as an empty shell.

The big shift is that only a small fraction of people went to college in the 50s, so you could be a philosophy major and get a good job, simply because you were a college graduate.
Now, tons of people go to college, so having a college degree isn't a mark of particular distinction.

PhDs are tricky in the job market. There are a lot of really useless PhDs. But even if you have a really good PhD, you're extremely specialized. So there might only be a few companies in the world who are doing something that would involve hiring someone with that particular PhD.
It's also possible for a PhD to go out of date very quickly. If the companies that specialize in that particular area decide your process or your idea or whatever costs too much or doesn't have enough benefit or doesn't hold the promise people once thought it did, you're done. Your life's work is now useless.
Sure you can find work with some company that generally values the research tools a PhD learns, but they might only pay a bit over minimum wage for a general researcher type position.

All the turmoil in the Super Pac with removals, firings, etc. should have warned you about this outcome. DeSantis has real accomplishments as governor but his political team was and is apparently piss poor Cruz campaign staff that basically spent a gob of money to produce a declining share in primary votes.
Getting into spats with Trump is a rather stupid role for a candidate seeking to displace him. Perhaps it is because in 2016, Cruz try to draft behind Trump presumably to try to slingshot past him in later primaries and his former managers were not going to repeat that mistake. Instead, they chose to get into the mud with Trump which is a mistake because Trump likes it dirty in the mud.
It would have been a difficult race anyway but DeSantis tried to thread the needle which made him appear weak on important national issues such as his passionless statements over Trump being railroaded, the Mar a Lago raid, Ukraine aid, and so on. Even his abortive move illegals northward ended up far inferior to that of Abbott.

It might have been interesting to have the chair/ranking member demand Hunter et all be arrested, searched for drugs/weapons etc...and watch the interaction between the Sgt at Arms, Capitol police guards and Hunters SS Detail.
Where was hunter etal immediately prior to appearing there? The Whitehouse? Where did they go immediately after? Meeting with any Officials? How many cars were in his motorcade? Where did they park?
It's not like just "Anyone" can drive right up to the Capitol, hop out with an entourage, and barge into a Hearing Room.

Parking revenues alone are in the Millions, parking is a BIG business particularly in NYC/DC/Chicago...Do the Dems demand lists of every single car that ever parked in/at a Trump property?
Their BIG claim is that he received $10's of Millions from a Chinese company that had a large amount of office space at Trump Tower, but had that space starting in 2008...then canceled their lease and moved out while Trump was still in office.
By the Way...both Tiffany's and NIKE's biggest stores are anchor clients in Trump Buildings...have been for decades. Should every pair of shoes sold, and every "Blue Box" ever gifted to a wife(or mistress) count as an emolument?
Trump also invited and donated the office space to Jesse Jackson's headquarters...last I heard JJ still uses it.(Racissssst!)

IIRC, it has a lot to do with sites important to Jewish people.
I think the people who get on this commission are expected to raise money to preserve/restore different sites. Makes sense that another wealthy Jewish person wanted to be on this particular presidential committee, kind of like how plumb ambassador jobs go to big donors.
